open banter-length starter: featuring brandon karstark, hand of the king owen stark where: the main gates of highgarden, high atop the hill. brandon karstark returns to highgarden with a congregation of northern men and women returning from a hunting trips, atop a large number of horses and hunting hounds. 

to say the lord of karhold had been particularly tense as of late would be easily to dismiss; for when was the sun of winter ever noticeably tense? it was he who acted as a form of binding for the northern court, across all of their differences of opinion and even of culture: equally as comfortable amongst the manderlys of white harbor as the umbers of the last hearth. and yet still, to claim him not tense would be nothing but a lie; the man was entirely tense of late, only easily able to hide it. 

his demeanour was one in which he seemed utterly unfazed by events, not in the way of seeming detached and aloof, but continuing as he always was. the sun of winter. the binder. 

it was more than a warm smile and a deep laugh; it was more than the reassuring hand on the back. it was the promise and the knowledge that all would indeed be settled. not okay, but settled. just all had been settled before. the wind caused his hair to be as unkept as it always was, and the man wore an air of northern pride within the way he carried himself. there was a skill that came in knowing how to remain composed, even in the height of stress; and to brandon, being composed was not being stoic and severe. 

it was continuing as one always did. the news of the attack on the manderly fleet from the three sisters had resulted in emergency meetings and discussions within the northern court, no doubt being reflected in the vale court. soon they would go to the vale court with their demands; a difficult discussion considering the close alliance. still, brandon did not panic; resources had gone, repayments to the iron bank need be made, but their increase in taxation and the talks of marriage including a tully dowry ensured such payment could be made and covered in the short term. 

“aye, aye!” brandon’s voice bellowed out over the sound of the northern men and the barking of the hunting hounds, his horse quickening through the wet mud. rain blessed these fertile crops in the north, and it showed. a particular hunting hound, no doubt overly excited from the commutation and the exercise, and galavanted up to another and began to clamber up their legs. naturally, it would be one belonging to the karstarks. “down. down, stupid mutt.” despite his words, the man slipped from the horse and moved to grab hold of the hound from the collar, pulling it aside. “ignore him, fuckin’ fool.”
