I've been reading Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire as research for a project of mine, and it has certainly been an experience.
Desert Solitaire was one of these titles I'd heard bandied about in American nature literature growing up (the kind of thing teachers recommended once you finished Hatchet), but I don't here his work mentioned as much anymore. I recently re-encountered the title on a literal ecofascist reading list. While Abbey doesn't sound like an ecofascist himself, I can easily see why nature Nazis like him.
The book chronicles Abbey's time as a seasonal park ranger at the Arches National Monument in Utah There is a kind of uncertainty and inconsistency in the way he writes, even in the way he acts towards his surroundings in the desert. Silent Spring had only been published a few years before Solitaire was, and the eco-cultural revolution was not yet in full swing. Abbey writes lovingly about his desert environment. He describes in stunning detail, for example, the everyday beauty of a bumblebee alighting on a cactus flower, and decries the reckless "development" initiatives of the Bureau of Public Roads. But on the next page, he will say something like this: "...it's a foolish, simple-minded rationalism which denies any form of emotion to all animals but man and his dog. This is no more justified than the Moslems are in denying souls to women." Sure dude. Okay, fine, he was writing in the sixties. Some insensitivity is par for the course. But then, after pages and pages of decrying humans driving desert flora and fauna towards extinction, he describes with glee an instance where he stones a rabbit to death for no apparent reason.
It's a bizarre passage, and shows Abbey at his most unhinged. He describes the rabbit as "cowardly" for running away from threats, unlike the brave mountain lion, who stands and fights. He throws the stone and hits the rabbit's head: "He crumples, there's the usual gushing of blood, etc.," and the creature is dead. "I continue my walk with a new, augmented cheerfulness which is hard to understand but unmistakable [...] I try but cannot feel any sense of guilt." Reflecting on the incident, he concludes that his killing of the rabbit has made him a part of the desert, a membership bought by killing or being killed, being "predator or prey". Even so, he decides not to eat the rabbit, which he says is probably diseased anyway. He also describes using his walking stick to crush and stir up an ant colony, also without any reason beyond not liking ants. "Don't actually care for ants. Neurotic little pismires." These are far from the only times that Abbey violates his personal philosophy of reverence for all living creatures.
It's clear that Edward Abbey came to Arches National Monument already dissatisfied with the outside world, and with some authority issues to boot (some quick googling on his background shows two demotions as a military police officer for clashing with higher-ups). The freedom of the desert, its simplicity and balance, is a significant part of what makes it appeal to him. But its harshness, the hostility of its sandstorms and lurking rattlesnakes, draws him in just as much.
Edward Abbey is not an ecofascist. If anything, his ill-defined political beliefs can be vaguely defined as anarchistic, if they can be defined at all. Deleuze and Guattari write in A Thousand Plateaus that fascism is "a cancerous body rather than a totalitarian organism". It is fluid, mutable. Sometimes it lies latent, benign; at other times it rushes outward, colonizing piecemeal and erratically, in "flows capable of suffusing every kind of cell". Elements of Abbey, and of Desert Solitaire, contain such microfascisms.
Let's turn back to the linchpin of it all: the killing of the rabbit, which he sees as a joyous, cosmic act; one that links him into a (circular? pyramidal?) chain of being he was previously alienated from, in the atomized world of civilization. His joy is only augmented when he realizes he is not guilty for killing the rabbit. In per-modern hunting customs across the world, the taking of animal life is never free and unmediated. Thanks may be given to the spirit of the animal itself, or to the unseen powers that led the hunter to their quarry. Naturally, the sacrifice of an animal to a god was just that: for a god, not the human involved. What Abbey describes in the killing of the rabbit is something utterly different.
In Federico Finchelstein's Fascist Mythologies, Finchelstein says that in fascism, "consciousness was not a repression of inwardness (as Freud understood the workings of the Ego and the Id) but its actual distillation. [...] [Fascist consciousness] was not contemplative but similar to that of a sublime sensation of ecstasy."
The fascist subject is most "conscious" precisely when they loose themselves in the ecstatic abandon of the act. Such fascist consciousness is the foundation of the free, easy violence it facilitates.
When Abbey describes casting the stone at the rabbit, it is in a Meursault-like twilight of awareness. He sets up the encounter as a game, one in which he is a scientist experimenting on a rabbit that has been "volunteered" to him, and whose death is justifiable through its natural cowardice. He hardly realizes that the action he is carrying out, and when the rabbit dies he is shocked out of his reverie for a moment.
"For a moment I am shocked by my deed [...] but shock is succeeded by a mild elation."
For Abbey, primordial violence is what at last allows him union with the sacred world of the desert.
"No longer do I feel so isolated from the sparse and furtive life around me, a stranger from another world. I have entered into this one. We are kindred all of us [...] Long live diversity, long live the Earth!"
By carrying out this act of bare violence, Abbey frees himself from the civilized world and achieves union with the world of Nature, in which violence is a simple act: one that creates its own order rather than supporting existing ones. It is this union that, while the moment lasts, allows him to rejoice in his newfound "innocence and power".
That is where I will leave things for now. There are other, more overt themes that Abbey explores that are the chief reason Desert Solitaire appeals to many ecofascists, such as its characterizations of industrial society and "Progress". Abbey's later work, such as The Monkey Wrench Gang, set even more explicit examples of direct action and sabotage that inspired right-wing accelerationists as well as left-wing environmental activists. This is my first long-ish post; if you're interested in these kinds of posts on ecofascism and ecocriticism, let me know and I might make more in the future.

since we’re sharing our cc hot takes now, here are more cc unpopular opinions
- I don’t know why Jars is such a popular ship, Lars is literally old enough to be Jack’s father. Besties, or maybe a father-son figure type of shit would be fine, but as lovers, it just seems weird. If Jack was a girl, maybe you’d see my point.
- Amy in S2 was NOT a pick me. She was a naive rookie that was learning. Even after White Peaks where she went through a lot of stuff, she still wasn’t a pick me. She had a lot of unresolved issues that time to work with. Without all of that character development she went through, we would never had the girlboss Amy in Season 6.
- Continuation of the last bullet, I don’t like it when fans compare Guiletta (hope i spelled her name right) and Amy’s sufferings to each other. Both had suffered a ton in their respective seasons, and it should be acknowledged as such, not compared.
- The Bureau handled the Nomad Case (Case 8, Death in the Desert) very poorly. As an international organization, they should’ve done research and/or a background check on the nomadic people they were interrogating so they know how to communicate with them and to avoid offending/being disrespectful to them.
- The filicide (killing of one’s child) should be talked about more in CC, like the fairytale one and the jellyfish one in Pacific Bay because they were so fucked up.
- The Conspiracy wasn’t the first season to challenge the black and white morality of the police department the player was in. (side-eyeing you TV Tropes) There are countless of cases wherein the player’s black and white morality is challenged, and players should acknowledge that since CC covers countless of murders, not everything is black and white. Not all killers are completely bad nor are the victims innocent.

I have seen Kazui's short mv and
He's an intelligence agent, an individual considerably above police officers. More than likely part of the Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office (CIRO) or National Police Agency Security Bureau. Why do I think this? Well-
They are driving around in a car that is noticeably not a police vehicle.
Tumblr media
2. They are not wearing typical police uniforms and they are wearing armbands something not common of regular Japanese police officers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. They have a portable siren to put atop of the car when needed. Implying that up to the point that is needed, they are meant to remain inconspicuous.
Tumblr media
That's an intelligence agent not a cop. This also explains why Kazui would be so interested in who was controlling Milgram and how they caught him.
"I don't think someone like you could be looking over all ten of us right now, there must be some sort of organization behind all this."
Because if he is an intelligence agent, he'd more than likely know everything to do to not be caught by anyone let alone a child.
Also, the song's genre is swing not Jazz. Even though swing derived from Jazz. There is a difference between the two genres. This is Jazz and this is Swing. This is why electro swing and jazz are two different genres.
Intelligence agents are cops but not all cops are intelligence agents. Some Jazz is Swing but not all Swing is Jazz. Hope this helps. I know I'm being nitpicky here, but I don't believe anyone would be particularly okay with me calling all forms of metal music death metal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
X
Half his first song notably takes some influences from R&B something else that's stylistic origins ties back to and say it with me this time Jazz. So, this is a very natural and fitting progression in musical influences in my opinion.
Swing music is the more appropriate term here from a character perspective as well. Swing is the embodiment of dance until it gets better music which fits the mindset Kazui has developed over the course of Milgram of lying until it gets better while still holding onto that undertone of doubt and somber depth that Jazz has in general.

LA Times: Philippine Vigilantes Reflect U.S. Strategy for ‘Low-Intensity Conflict’ (1987)
by Peter Tarr October 11, 1987
NEW YORK —  Some weeks after retired Army Maj. Gen. John K. Singlaub told the Senate-House Iran- contra committees about his fund-raising activities on behalf of the Nicaraguan “freedom fighters,” I went to the Philippines to research that country’s communist insurgency.
My travels in the southern islands of Negros, Cebu and Mindanao turned up evidence that the counterinsurgency strategy advocated by Singlaub and other private American citizens on the far right for use in Central America now had taken firm root in the Philippines.
The tactics are used in what Pentagon strategists call “low-intensity conflict” or LIC. They emphasize an “integrated” approach in the fight against communism combining rural civic action and humanitarian aid programs with methods of “unconventional warfare” that Singlaub and others--including the U.S. government--have covertly employed in El Salvador and Nicaragua.
Singlaub’s credentials in “unconventional operations” are well known. A former chief of the Joint Unconventional Task Force in Vietnam, he participated in “Operation Phoenix,” the CIA’s notorious assassination program that resulted in the murder of an estimated 40,000 supposed Viet Cong sympathizers. More recently he served on President Reagan’s Special Warfare Advisory Group, to offer recommendations regarding LIC strategies.
There remains much speculation throughout the Philippines about the purpose of his several recent visits, spanning a period from July, 1986, to this past February. The former commander of U.S. forces in South Korea insists that he went to the Philippines to search for buried treasure. A number of his critics say the general’s real mission was to help organize civilian militias to be employed in the fight against guerrillas of the communist New People’s Army (NPA).
Many questions have yet to be answered, but one thing is certain: Vigilante justice has captured the imagination of the mass of Filipinos. It is a development that has disturbing implications.
In the theory of low-intensity warfare, the establishment of paramilitary groups is a key element in the battle for the sympathies of people living in rebel-contested areas. Their proliferation is thought to deprive communists of “mass-base” support, and thus contributes to a broader effort to isolate and demoralize insurgent forces.
Several commanders of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assured me that most vigilante groups were unarmed. But at every turn I saw deadly weapons: M-16 automatic rifles, fragmentation grenades, homemade pistols and shotguns and a bewildering variety of machetes and bolo knives. And at every turn, the men, women and children who wielded these weapons were eager to tell me that they were “prepared to die” to defend themselves against communism, which many of them called “the godless ideology.”
On a street in downtown Davao, a sprawling city of 1.2 million on Mindanao’s southeast coast, the bolo-toting “Midnight Attack Commandos” of the “Far Eastern Democratic Restoration Bureau” boasted about dismembering captured communist guerrillas while one of their leaders supplied me with leaflets published by an evangelical ministry in Arkansas that posed these burning questions: “Are the IRS, FBI, U.S. Dept. of Labor, the Mafia and labor unions part of the Vatican? Is the Pope the superboss of all government agencies as well as the Vatican?”
How did this literature get to Davao, 10,000 miles from its point of origin in Alma, Arkansas? Did the vigilantes have American contacts? Were they acting in concert with the Philippine military, or on their own? Where did their weapons come from? What were their sources of financial support?
Lt. Col. Franco Calida, police chief of Davao and the acknowledged “godfather” of the first and most successful vigilante group, the Alsa Masa, insisted that his and other paramilitary groups had arisen spontaneously. Their popularity, he said, reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the communists’ urban terror campaign conducted in the city between 1981 and 1985. Indeed, Davao had been the “murder capital” of the Philippines in those years, a city where more than 5,000 people had met violent deaths. Many of the murders were “insurgency-related,” although the activities of criminal gangs also accounted for a good deal of the carnage.
Alsa Masa, which in the local dialect means “Masses Arise,” was organized by the leader of one of those gangs early in 1986. But the movement went nowhere until Calida assumed his Davao command in July, 1986. It was at that time that Calida received a visit from Singlaub. They “chitchatted,” Calida said, but did not discuss Alsa Masa. Nevertheless, in the months following Singlaub’s visit, Alsa Masa grew exponentially. It now claims 10,000 members. “The Alsa Masa was never a CIA project,” Calida told Filipino journalists several months ago. “It is the product of abuses of the communist New People’s Army. The people were left with no choice but to band together to protect themselves.”
In Davao, virulently anti-communist radio announcer Jun Porras Pala admitted that the vigilante groups lumped together all manner of riffraff, from members of criminal gangs to adherents of fanatical religious cult groups.
In Negros, Cebu and Mindanao there were ominous signs that anti-communist fanaticism was putting innocent people in danger. In Davao, the houses of people who did not join or make financial contributions to Alsa Masa (a practice one member called “extortion for democracy”) were marked with the letter X. Anti-communist broadcasters threatened supposed sympathizers over the airwaves.
In all three islands, liberal members of the Catholic Church had been threatened both by vigilantes and military officials. During my stay in Negros, 35 clerics and newsmen were accused of being NPA sympathizers by a local military commander, and had received death threats in the mail. A similar scenario was simultaneously unfolding in Cebu. And in Davao, the Redemptorist Church was strafed from a passing truck late one August night. Earlier, Catholic members of the congregation had been called “redemterrorists” by broadcaster Pala. Redemptorists in Cebu had been similarly branded.
Why did President Corazon Aquino, an uncommonly religious woman, agree to endorse the vigilante movement? The answer lies partly in a meaningless distinction she makes between armed and unarmed vigilante groups. Aquino favors the mobilization of unarmed citizen patrols, called Nakasaka, that warn the military of NPA activity. She favors these groups, but does not proscribe the activities of armed groups.
American officials may have influenced Aquino’s policy. On March 16, 1987, she ordered a government-trained militia, the Civilian Home Defense Force, “and all private armies and other armed groups” to disband. The CHDF, with 70,000 members nationwide, had been active since the 1970s in the fight against the NPA, but its ill-disciplined members had been blamed for many of the military abuses committed against civilians in counterinsurgency operations.
A phase-out of the CHDF was mandated in the new Philippine constitution, adopted in February. But soon after Aquino issued the order to disband paramilitary groups, she rescinded it. The Philippine military, led by Gen. Fidel Ramos, was lobbying hard for retention of the CHDF. So was Local Goverment Secretary Jamie Ferrer, slain in August. Aquino and her military had been repeatedly lectured, directly and indirectly, by high-ranking U.S. officials on how to fight the communists. One such lecture was delivered on March 19, 1987, by Richard L. Armitage, the assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. He offered a blunt critique of AFP tactics in testimony before the House subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs.
Armitage’s remarks clearly indicated American impatience with Aquino’s policy of reconciliation, in effect during her first 12 months in office. Even after the failure of peace talks with the radical left and the collapse of a cease-fire in the AFP-NPA war that had held for only 60 days, Aquino continued to offer an olive branch to the left. On Feb. 28, she proposed amnesty and rehabilitation for rebels who would lay down their arms, in the interests of “healing the wounds of our nation.”
On March 18, a time bomb exploded at the Philippine Military Academy. It was apparently intended to kill Aquino, who was to address the academy’s graduating class four days later. When commencement day arrived, the Philippine president unveiled a new strategy--one that might have gratified Singlaub himself. “The answer to terrorism of the left and the right is not social and economic reform, but police and military action,” she said, turning her back on a philosophy she had espoused since coming to power.
It was in this climate that Aquino rescinded her order to disband the paramilitary groups. In keeping with her new policy of “total war” against the communists, and in light of her growing reliance on Ramos, who repeatedly put down attempts by disgruntled AFP officers to take over her government, Aquino found herself, by the end of March, implementing the very counterinsurgency policies she had resisted for more than a year. She was now prepared to wage low-intensity warfare.
Her shift to a hard-line policy is likely to encourage a similarly militant response from the radical left. But even more important, the legitimation of vigilante “justice” will most likely serve to accentuate a culture of violence that has prevailed for decades in the Philippine countryside. At the core of the vigilante movement are incompetent CHDF commandos, religious cultists and members of private armies that flourished during the Marcos years.
The Philippines needs more than civic action and “humanitarian” aid programs carried out by civilian and military authorities waging low-intensity warfare. The country needs structural reforms, the most important of which is land reform. As Aquino often noted during her first year in office, the insurgency has economic and social roots. It will continue to flourish--no matter how many vigilantes are mobilized--unless the root causes are addressed.

Moonies Support Vigilante Violence in the Philippines Around 1986/1987 - excerpts from Belina A. Aquino’s “The Philippines in 1987: Politics of Survival”
Marti found that the Reagan administration sought the help of CAUSA International to support US policy in Nicaragua. It might be mentioned that the Moonies and CAUSA have conducted expense-paid seminars and conferences in Washington, D.C.; Manila and other places, inviting well-known names in academic, religious and political circles. Among the CAUSA’s top brass are Cleon Skousen, a Mormon Church leader, Douglas MacArthur II, and Bo Hi Pak, the chairman who has acknowledged CIA funding. This is just another form of counter-insurgency, but it tries to minimize direct military intervention in favor of small “grassroots” efforts combining socio-economic, civic action, psychological & political objective.

HypMic x Detective Conan AU [Masterlist]
Another ridiculous crossover, this time HypMic and DC. DC is the anime that will always hold a special place in my heart.
As for HypMic, I got pulled in it recently. I know that there must be something I don’t know, because I haven’t research the characters deeper yet (I only watched the anime and read the Fandom lol).
I JUST LOVE IT WHEN MY FAVORITE TWO SERIES MEET, OKAY? HERE WE GO!
Introduction: PART 1 (you’re here!) - PART 2
Countdown to Heaven: trapped in Tower A - among the evacuees - car crossing to tower
Yokohama Pier confrontation: the unwanted arrival and rescue
The setting took place (mostly) in Yokohama (Kanagawa) and a little bit in Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro (Tokyo).
Best read while listening to "Greed” by KNOCK OUT MONKEY or “DEATH RESPECT” by MAD TRIGGER CREW VS Matenrou
---
Ichiro Yamada (child identity: Hiroki Ohtomo)
Tumblr media
Nineteen-year old Ichiro was a well-known amateur detective throughout Ikebukuro and later Yokohama for being able to solve any crime that the police failed to. He is also a former member of The Dirty Dawg, a rap group.
One day, after solving a murder at an amusement park, Ichiro comes upon a mysterious man in black extorting money from another man. Assuming that he knows too much, the two men forced him into a rap battle. One of them used an illegal Hypnosis Microphone laced with poison that was supposed to not only kill him, but leave no trace behind.
Unfortunately for them, Ichiro has been shrunk into a ten-year old. One quick visit to his rival and neighbor Samatoki's house later, Ichiro realizes that he must keep his real identity secret, otherwise the two men in black will come back and kill him for good.
Nemu Aohitsugi (child identity: Chika Aoyama)
Tumblr media
Nemu Aohitsugi is a genius chemist who created the CASTOR-IX poison that turned Ichiro into a ten-year old boy.
After she is imprisoned by the yakuza for being related to the yakuza traitor, Samatoki Aohitsugi, Nemu attempted to end her own life with a dose of CASTOR-IX but was instead de-aged as well. Using her newly-shrunken body to escape and go into hiding as "Chika Aoyama", Nemu is luckily taken in by her older brother. She uses her condition to live out the innocent childhood she never had.
She befriends Ichiro, Jiro, and Saburo as a way to make amends for her past crimes, and works on an CASTOR-IX antidote for Ichiro.
Samatoki Aohitsugi
Tumblr media
An ex-yakuza (wakagashira) of the Katen Family and former member of The Dirty Dawg along with Ichiro. Samatoki is Ichiro's hot-tempered friend/rival who makes a living developing odd inventions (albeit failed miserably at times); some of which are put to use by Ichiro throughout his (mis)adventures.
Despite their bitter rivalry, Ichiro appears to have the utmost trust in him. Ichiro had no problem of revealing his identity to him only moments after being shrunk by an illegal Hypnosis Microphone laced with poison called "CASTOR-IX".
He is Nemu Aohitsugi's older brother and took her in when she showed up at Ichiro's doorstep unconscious and drenched in the rain. He often provides insight for Ichiro to help combat the yakuza.
Hifumi Izanami
Tumblr media
A no. 1 host who works at a club in Shinjuku. He has a severe fear of women, yet a very upbeat and friendly fellow.
He was believed to be the yakuza's Jyuto Iruma, but is actually a Public Security Bureau (PSB) agent named Hifumi Izanami looking into his whereabouts. He is unaware that the real Jyuto Iruma has been using his appearance as a disguise to hunt for Nemu Aohitsugi.
As a PSB agent, he's often partnered with fellow agent (and best friend) who poses as a pessimistic salaryman, Doppo Kannonzaka.
Doppo Kannonzaka
Tumblr media
A sales representative at the E.L Medical Co, Ltd, a manufacturer of medical equipment in Shinjuku which has its branch in Yokohama.
He’s a pessimist who thinks about everything in a negative light, and... oh, he apologizes constantly. He's often seen with black eyes due to perpetual gloom and exhaust.
Beneath his unassuming personality, he's secretly a competent Public Security Bureau (PSB) agent with his partner (and best friend), Hifumi Izanami, who poses as a club host.
Notes:
- I tried my best not to make them stray off from their respective occupations (for Doppo and Hifumi), basically these two are undercover agents and uses club host and salaryman as a cover :)
- I made Samatoki as an ex-yakuza and Nemu as a chemist associated with them. However, both betrayed the underworld because they couldn’t see each other a long time and grew tired of the shady things they do everyday.  I JUST WANT TO SEE THEM SPEND THEIR FAMILY TIME TOGETHER (poor Nemu got brainwashed by the Chuoku) :”(((
- Samatoki as a mad inventor whose inventions malfunction constantly is my everything, hehehehe
- HELLO, DOPPO AS A SECRET AGENT IS BADASS AF, SO DO HIFUMI
- Oh yes, Jyuto become a yakuza member who poses as an active-duty police sergeant in the Organized Crime Unit of the Kanagawa Police. Put it simply, he infiltrated the police force which is part of his mission to hunt Nemu :)
- I tried to make a hybrid use of Hypnosis Microphone and real weapons here. In a relatively normal situation, they use Hypnosis Microphone to fight, but when everything gets tough, they use weapons. In Ichiro’s case, as he was shrunken into a child, he can’t rap in order not to expose his identity. However, he can rap when he returned to his original body temporarily.

In October 2020, activist Reina Mae Nasino, surrounded by cops, wrapped up in full protective gear, and wearing handcuffs, attended her baby’s funeral.
Nasino and her baby River became icons of injustice, not just of the crackdown on dissent during the Duterte administration, but of the conditions of detained mothers who simply want to care for their newborn babies. Baby River was separated from Nasino at birth, and died when she was only three months old.
Here [in the mothers' ward] stay persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who are pregnant, or had just given birth. The mothers’ ward consists of six beds, a shared bathroom with curtains serving as a door, a meager pantry, faded stickers of cartoon characters on the walls, and a shelf of dusty toys.
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has a measly P15-medicine budget per PDL, per day. According to lone resident doctor and Corrections Technical Chief Superintendent Maria Lourdes Razon, this already accounts for everything medical – from medicines to medical supplies like cotton balls and alcohol, and even period products. There’s no separate budget for a PDL who is pregnant or ill.
In [Correctional Institution for Women (CIW)], according to Razon, PDLs who have prescription medicines have to deposit in the pharmacy whatever money is provided by their families. The pharmacy then deducts from the fund whatever medicines PDLs avail of.
When needed, and especially for births, CIW’s pregnant PDLs are referred to the Mandaluyong City Medical Center (MCMC), a stone’s throw from the prison. Razon claimed that the PDLs who need procedures need not shell out any money, as it is a public hospital. But such does not seem to be the case – if Maria’s experience is any indication.
A shortage of resources and medical staff compromises the quality and accessibility of healthcare services, particularly in terms of prenatal and postnatal care. This situation forces pregnant PDLs to bear the financial burden of medical expenses, as Maria herself experienced.
After securing permits to leave the facility, PDLs from CIW are accompanied by an escort and a nurse. There have been reported issues, however, according to [Dr. Jonelle Baloloy, chief resident of the MCMC OB-GYN ward], of PDLs “having difficulties in securing permits to leave the facility.”
It doesn’t help that the P15-medical budget covers the mothers only. Babies, who have their own needs like diapers, clothes, and hygiene products, are not PDLs and are excluded from the budget. While there is a separate P70-food allocation per day, or just P23.33 for a meal, pregnant PDLs and breastfeeding mothers need more because they also require special nutrition, like increased fluid intake.
Karen Bantang from the CHR Gender Division also cited the alarming concern about postpartum depression among mother PDLs. A study conducted by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development found that 15.6% of Filipino women experience depression during pregnancy and 19.8% after childbirth. The pregnant PDLs of CIW aren’t any different.
2024 Mar. 30
The police arrested [Rose, an elderly PDL] for a charge which turned out to be connivance in drug usage. “What did they mean, connivance? I didn’t have any drugs on me. I also turned out negative on my drug test. Well, it just so happened that it was my house [that my husband was using].”
“What hurts is how long I was away from [my children’s] side. And now, I’ve been in prison for another 20 years. I’ve been away from them for 40 years now,” she said.
The family she now has is found in the CIW mothers’ ward. She plays a vital role there, where she has been assisting in the care of both PDLs and babies since 2010 due to the lack of medical personnel who can monitor them at all times.
When mothers in prison have such an option [to keep their newborn babies with them], the assumption is that they’d prefer to maximize that time with their babies as much as possible. But with an uncertain future and feelings of being ill-equipped to care for their babies, some mothers choose to let their babies out early.
CIW rules say that when a PDL under their care gives birth, the babies may stay with the mothers for a maximum period of one year. But according to lone resident doctor and Corrections Technical Chief Superintendent Maria Lourdes Razon, at least in her past year working at CIW, there are no babies who have celebrated their birthdays in the facility.
Lawyer Gian Taruc from the Visitorial Division of the Commission on Human Rights pointed out the disparity among the Philippines’ regional members.
“In other countries that are equally Third World countries too, like Malaysia and Bangkok, they are able to implement these programs. They have policies that allow them to give proper care for female PDLs. So why not in the Philippines?” he said.
The deficiency of mental support for mother PDLs is a persisting reality even beyond the walls of CIW. Nasino also cited similar psychological harassment inside the Manila City Jail where she was detained.
“From my experience [in Manila City Jail] when I gave birth, there was this condemnation from the guards blaming me for the situation of my baby. They would tell me: ‘It was you who got yourself imprisoned, so why should you rely on us for your pregnancy?’ This is why other PDLs who feel unwell would opt not to say anything instead,” she said.
Rose does not allow the women under her care to mingle with the general, congested population. It’s a precaution to keep the mothers and babies healthy. Most of the time, the babies do not have access to vaccines.
In the House of Representatives, the Makabayan bloc filed House Bill No. 570, or the Parents in Jail bill.
Nasino’s case is particularly cited in the bill’s explanatory note. It highlights the need to provide prisoners, especially mothers, the necessary mechanisms and facilities to enjoy their parental rights and ensure that the needs of their children are attended to while they are incarcerated.
If the CIW had their way, each PDL would have a minimum P100-medicine budget per day, Razon said.
More could be done for the mothers at CIW, who already have decent living conditions – and more so for mothers in jails who don’t even have that shelf of dusty toys, or their own ward.

Top 10 Factors While Considering to Buy a Property
Are you eyeing the world of real estate investment to buy a property or boost your financial portfolio? Investing in income properties can be an exhilarating journey, promising substantial returns if you make informed decisions. However, the real estate landscape is riddled with complexities that can impact your returns. As a first-time investor, it’s crucial to tread carefully.
But, with EggsInvest, your trusted investment portal specializing in property investment in UK, you can navigate the intricacies of real estate with confidence.
Now, let’s delve into the essential factors you need to consider when purchasing an income property for your “buy a property” goals. Whether you’re interested in London sale apartments or exploring house selling websites in UK, these factors will guide you toward a profitable investment.
Neighborhood:
The neighborhood you choose will shape your tenant pool and vacancy rates. Proximity to universities may attract students, while other areas might cater to different demographics. EggsInvest advises thorough research to understand the local dynamics and potential challenges for those looking to buy a property.
Property Taxes:
Variable property taxes across regions can impact your overall costs. While high property taxes may be justifiable in sought-after neighborhoods, caution is advised in locations with less appeal. EggsInvest recommends exploring the municipality’s assessment office and understanding future tax implications when looking to buy a property.
Schools:
For family-sized homes, the quality of local schools influences property value. Even if your primary concern is monthly cash flow, the overall investment value matters for future resale. EggsInvest encourages investors to consider the educational landscape when evaluating income properties for those looking to buy a property.
Crime:
Safety is paramount. Access crime statistics through online resources, local police, and public libraries. A decline or rise in criminal activity can significantly impact the desirability of your property. EggsInvest recommends thorough research to ensure a secure investment for those looking to buy a property.
Job Market:
Growing employment opportunities attract more tenants. Check job availability in your target area through the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Stay alert to major company movements, as they influence housing demand. EggsInvest advises considering the business type, as it can affect property values.
Amenities:
Explore the neighborhood’s perks – parks, restaurants, gyms, and public transportation. These amenities attract renters and enhance property value. EggsInvest suggests a detailed tour to identify areas with the best blend of public and private facilities when you aim to buy a property.
Future Development:
Municipal planning departments hold valuable information on future developments. Be cautious of projects that may impact property prices negatively. EggsInvest emphasizes staying informed about new housing that could compete with your investment.
Number of Listings and Vacancies:
High listing numbers may signal a seasonal cycle or a declining neighborhood. Investigate the cause to determine future trends. EggsInvest notes that low vacancy rates empower landlords to raise rents, while high rates may require adjustments to attract tenants for those looking to buy a property.
Average Rents:
Rental income is the lifeblood of your investment. Research the area’s average rent to ensure your property covers mortgage, taxes, and expenses. EggsInvest recommends understanding the area’s future trajectory to secure a profitable investment when you aim to buy a property.
Natural Disasters:
Consider insurance costs for potential natural disasters. EggsInvest stresses the importance of factoring in these expenses to protect your rental income. Understanding the risks associated with the area ensures a comprehensive investment strategy for those looking to buy a property.
Additional Tips from EggsInvest:
Starting Your Search: Begin independently to understand your property preferences before engaging a professional. This research enables you to identify key characteristics that align with your investment goals, especially if you want to buy a property.
Getting Information: Tap into official sources and engage with neighbors for authentic insights. Renters, especially, provide honest perspectives on the neighborhood. Frequent visits at different times offer a holistic view when you want to buy a property.
Choosing a Property: For beginners, single-family dwellings or condominiums are ideal. Consider appreciation potential and projected cash flow when selecting a property. EggsInvest recommends avoiding overpaying, adhering to the 12-times annual rent affordability rule for those looking to buy a property.
Determining the Rent: Set realistic rents based on average rates, avoiding prolonged vacancies. Calculate income against costs to ensure profitability. EggsInvest advises considering property maintenance costs and exploring options for property management when you want to buy a property.
Making the Purchase: Be prepared for stringent lending requirements for investment properties. Plan for a 20% to 30% down payment, plus closing costs. How to see the application of the latest scientific and technological techniques and materials in the military field
Tumblr media
In today's world, the development and application of scientific and technological techniques and materials play an important role in all fields, especially in the military field. In this highly technologized era, advanced materials are crucial for improving the performance and operational efficiency of military equipment. And the best science and technology technologies and materials are often supplied to the military in the first place.

Current Bangladesh Violence
On October 28, 2023, violence erupted at a rally organized by a political opposition party in Bangladesh. Ordinary people including BNP, Jamaat, police, and journalists have been victims of violence. Also organized by the Garment Workers' Party, there was a protest demanding a salary increase.
Well, we are not here to highlight the story of political violence. We only want to hear the stories of ordinary people.  According to Deutsche Welle, after verifying the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics report, the Development Research Institute BIDS released the final census and household census report on Monday. According to that calculation, the population of the country is now 16 crore 98 lakh 28 thousand 911 people. Which is more than the size of Bangladesh.
At present, the way the political violence in Bangladesh is increasing, the country's image is being damaged and the people of the country are suffering.
We want a beautiful society and a violence-free state. Where people can present their comments easily. People will have freedom of speech. People can exercise fundamental rights.
We know that in 1971 Bangladesh gained its sovereignty through a bloody 9-month long war. Which was not completed by the efforts of just one person or group. 3 million people of Bangladesh gave their lives to achieve independence. The soil of this country still smells of their blood. Since the entire nation has contributed here, we want space to exercise our rights. We want a government or a ruler who will always work for the welfare of the people.
We know that every ruler or country is part of the syndicate in some way. But if the ruler is not able to control the syndicate then it becomes a cause of suffering for the state and public.
Currently, the prices of daily necessities are on the rise. People are struggling to meet their needs. But we are noticing that the government is not taking any continuous measures there. So we assume that the government is hostage to the merchant community and syndicates? If this is the case, what will we do as common people? What do we have to do?
