i just read severance by ling ma...have thoughts

it's not usually that i really connect with chinese-american writings on diaspora, for the main reason being a lot of them dont delve past the surface level othering (lunch smell funny, smth smth abt boba, stereotypes, etc). the way ma writes the diasporic experience though really touches me in a specific way--mainly the guilt and disconnection around being in the imperial core and plundering the resources/labour of your own country.

when candace goes back to china, she feels othered obviously; not just because she grew up elsewhere but specifically the imperial undertones of her visit. she is just another american businessperson who's here to make a business deal with cheap labourers for her american publishing company based in manhattan.

you are looked at as a traitor to your own country, you can't connect well with relatives and family past simple conversational chinese. you are entrenched with western capitalism in the ways you dress, consume, live, that others can clearly tell you are an outsider.

back in america you have the expectation to reconcile with the sacrifices your parents made to bring you here. whether it's really verbalized or not, the contract is there. the painful ways they had to force themselves to assimilate (candace's mom coped through shopping which is very my own mom), to adopt the western stance that america is a better place than my underdeveloped one. it is free and it has democracy. candace's father trying to persuade his wife into staying in america, one of the reasons being you can have cars here, only to be killed in a traffic accident in the end--which subsequently also ended his wife's life prematurely

idk i dont have any concluding thoughts other than this aspect of the book was especially poignantly written and expressed. also must've been crazy to publish this book 2 years before the pandemic lol i wonder how the author felt about that
