hi!! i go with 7, 10, & 26 🥰
Ladies and gentlemen, the wonderful Julissa, kindly ensuring I don’t end up looking like a friendless recluse. You’re too good to me!!
7. Things that always make you smile
Urgh! This is going to sounds so incredibly lame but… I really like making other people happy. That’s what makes me smile! One absolute sure fire way is inviting other people to the farm and letting them get up close with all the animals. You can’t help but smile when you’re cuddling a one week old baby donkey!! And I can’t help but smile, when you smile, while doing so.
It’s a wonderful way to step outside the daily grind for a moment and reflect on just how cool my job is. Facilitating other people’s enjoyment allows me to take a moment for my own enjoyment.
10. Your hopes/wishes for the coming week
Honestly, just getting through it. It’s half term which means that the farm is going to be crazy busy! That’s one of my jobs. In my second job I’m a parks ranger, so during half term I’ll be running community activities for children, which again, will be crazy busy! In my third job I work in events management, for the local council. Often I work a day shift at the farm, and then an evening shift running an event.
One of the events I’m working is a wake at the start of the week, and while the person who died wasn’t very close to me personally, he was close to some of my nearest and dearest, and people in the community I work with, so that’s going to be a strange work day.
Additionally, I should really try and squeeze in some recording and editing work for @f-f-podcast.
So yeah. We’re just going for survival this next week!
26. if you could be doing anything you like right now, what would you do?
I miss conventions!! The last two conventions I was meant to attend were rescheduled due to the pandemic over and over and over and then the companies went bust and everyone lost their money… so that sucked!
So yes! I’d love to be at a convention right now, because hanging out with a whole room full of people that just get it, no questions asked, no explanation necessary? That’s the best!!

5 how many houseplants do you have?
18 what video games do you play
Thanks for the asks!
How many houseplants do you have?
On campus I have none and at home I have one. It's a little hoya plant. They're sturdy so I was sure my mom wouldn't kill it. It's still kicking!
What video games do I play?
A lot of Mario games, fighting games like Smash bros, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat, then Monster Hunter which I got into recently. I don't have a switch so I've been going through withdrawals with new Mario and Monster Hunter games. XD We won't drag the card games into this. I'll resist. And of course Minecraft occasionally.

Hey, you know that character you like? Yeah, the mean woman with a complex story? Well we put them in fandom and they're always talking about brutally killing her. Uh huh, they're saying it's funny because she's mean and her fictional choices make people uncomfortable. No, not just in forums- they joke about violently beating her under everything. I'm sorry dude, you'll be seeing people explicitly describe her death under every post and piece of art.

For the RP event!
Darling is talking to Alucard in his dog form, not knowing it’s him.
“I don’t want to be here. I never asked to be here. I…”
Sniffles and hugs the dog while burying her face in his fur.
“I don’t feel safe here… I just want to go home.”
The dog licks her face and allows her to cling to him, laying down and resting his head on her lap. He knew that she would be upset by him taking her, but he hadn't meant on keeping her trapped in his chambers for much longer; it's not like if she got to walk around and go back to her home home that he wouldn't be able to find her. Maybe he can let her go out for a while and get a taste of freedom for a bit.
For now though, it was nice to enjoy this moment of cuddling with them and being pet.

LMAOOOO I got my religious mother into liking the Sankta characters bc I told her "Yeah they're basically just angels with shotguns and will shoot demons at point-blank range. It's like if the Pope killed demons or whatever with a .22-magnum pistol and the Vatican is just full of humanoid angels who love guns more than they love their moms."

8? i love ur gallacats posts and art btw
Thank you ling, that’s so kind of you! 🌸😊
8. TV shows you’re currently obsessed with
I would be lying if I didn’t say Shameless belongs in the top spot here. Fell down that rabbit hole HARD! And am only digging myself deeper into it, and loving every minute!!
I absolutely loved The Sandman when it came out. And then last week I watched 5 minutes of ‘the sound of her wings’ when I was doing the Mickey as Dream Fluffbruary drawing and I now desperately want to rewatch it!! And I’m SO EXCITED for season 2, whenever that may be.
On that note, Season 1 of Good Omens wasn’t all I wanted it to be, but I am super looking forward to Season 2! Going post book and creating original material for it could be just what it needs! And Crowley and Aziraphale are love!
Oh!! Staged!! David Tennant and Michael Sheen creating lockdown magic!!! Pure genius. Loved every silly self indulgent minute of it! Have watched it SO MANY TIMES. Gonna watch it again today, now I’ve thought of it!
And then this week we have started podcasting Season 5 of Buffy over on @f-f-podcast and it’s made me realise how much I love that show, and how long it’s been since I’ve done a full Buffy rewatch! Longest running obsession of my life!!
Also I keep coming back to The Good Place, because I just think it’s perfect. And it makes me happy.
And Parks & Recs, because I used to hate it at first! But caring about all the characters in it REALLY sneaks up on you and now I’d die for them! And as a park ranger myself, it just hits differently. Working hard at work worth doing, indeed.
Oh! And Schitt’s Creek. Another show where the characters sneak up on you. Also another ‘always always ALWAYS rewatch’ show. Love love love.

For the AU Five facts game
Henry is participating in a ‘win a date with an eligible Batchelor’ charity auction. Alex is bidding on Henry, not because he wants to win but because he can tell it is annoying Henry and Alex finds it hilarious.
First of all, making a pitch for you to read Going Once, Going Twice by @three-drink-amy if you haven't already! It's not quite this but there IS date bidding and I think you'd really enjoy it, I sure as hell did.
ONE: Never in a million years could Henry have fathomed this being allowed by Buckingham, let alone suggested by them. He can only assume that word of the sheer volume of NDAs he's managed to have signed at Oxford has made its way back to Her Majesty, and she's decided that the prospect of dozens of rich heiresses financially competing for a dinner date with him will publicly assert his unimpeachable heterosexuality.
TWO: He sees June first, and wonders briefly if Alex is also one of the victims subjects of this godforsaken auction—but then someone moves, and there he is, hand wrapped around a glass of whiskey and smiling just as bright and beautiful as he was the first time Henry ever saw him. To this day Henry isn't entirely sure what it is about his existence that infuriates Alex so much, but last time they saw each other Alex threatened to throw him in the Thames, so he doubts much has changed between them.
THREE: The first bid Alex makes, Henry is absolutely certain, is a joke. He's saying something to his sister, gesticulating wildly as he does, and he's not looking anywhere near the stage until the auctioneer says ten thousand from Mr Claremont-Diaz and Alex's face snaps up. He opens his mouth, clearly to argue, but then Vicount Crosby's eldest daughter raises her hand and bids eleven thousand. So it's fine. Except. Except. Henry makes the terrible mistake of looking relieved right as Alex looked at him, and... well. His eyes narrow, and his chin tilts, and this time when he raises his hand it's bloody deliberate.
FOUR: Do the First Children get some sort of government stipend? Is that what's being spent on this? Is Alex going to go back home and submit a bloody expense report saying that he spent twenty two—no, twenty four—no, twenty six thousand pounds on dinner with a man he's made no secret he despises? If he could get up and leave without being raked over the coals for it later, he would. He doesn't understand what Alex is doing. (He also, briefly, dimly, registers that if Alex actually wins this ridiculous thing his gran will be furious, and that's almost enough to make up for the fact that Henry knows he's the victim in some sort of elaborate practical joke right now.)
FIVE: After Alex wins (because of course he bloody wins) Henry tries to assure him that he's not actually expected to go through with the farce of a date, and Alex actually scoffs. "After what I spent I expect to be fucking wooed, sweetheart."
[Send me a potential AU and I’ll tell you five fun facts that would happen in a story.]

thank you very much for the ask, @ashesandhackles. let's see how these go down...
[choose violence ask game here]
1. who is the character everyone gets wrong?
the last time i answered this question i said sirius - both fanon sirius and dark!sirius - and i stand by it, so this time, let's say... dumbledore.
and, actually, i think this for many of the same reasons which inspired my sirius answer. i really dislike dumbledore bashing, since it’s so frequently based in a complete misunderstanding of his character and the role he serves within the series’ narrative conventions - above all, the fact that the omniscient vibe he gives off in books 1-6 is not actually omniscience at all, as book 7 reveals; dumbledore doesn’t know that sirius is innocent, or that moody is barty crouch jr., or that kreacher is passing information to voldemort, because he’s just a human being. far too many criticisms of dumbledore don’t take this into account, ascribing to malice what is clearly just fallibility.
but, with this said, i dislike the anti-bashing turn in dumbledore-centric fics just as much, because many of these pair the idea that dumbledore is fallible (good and correct) with the idea that he is - for want of a better term - harry-ish. and this is just as bad a misreading of the character. dumbledore is not impulsive or reckless or radical - he holds radical views, but he does nothing to actually advance them in society (this is a man who is at the heart of the establishment for half a century, who does nothing with that power to dismantle the oppressive social structures which drive wizarding politics and prop up blood-supremacy). dumbledore is a hypocrite - he’s happy to be depended on by fudge, he is appalled that fudge might depend on lucius malfoy. dumbledore lives in an ivory tower. dumbledore projects his shame and self-loathing onto others in a way which is detrimental to their own happiness. and so on.
none of these things preclude dumbledore being courageous, but his ‘gryffindor courage’ is remarkably un-gryffindorish, and a lot of pro-dumbledore writing is surprisingly unwilling to confront this.
[also, there’s the other layer of pro-dumbledore writing i dislike - when authors make him hyper-whimsical. the man is stylish, rather than dressed like he ran into a charity shop and fell over. his sweet tooth is an incidental detail - and a trait which harry also shares - rather than his entire personality. he is not dithering and indecisive - he is a creature of inaction, but he tends to have settled on a single ‘right’ course very quickly in his mind. he is not silly. he is not a blushing fool in his relationships - all evidence is that he had just as much power over grindelwald as grindelwald had over him. he is not particularly emotionally demonstrative. he is physically strong. he is taller than voldemort. and, crucially, his mask of benign good humour is fake. all of his ‘whimsical’ traits are part of the act, the real dumbledore is ruthless and damaged and a nerd who loves reading and it’s iconic. let him be that way.]
8. what is the common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about?
there is no such thing as canon compliance.
by which i mean that ‘canon compliant’ is a useful tag to have on ao3 as an indicator of chronology - it’s a good shorthand for ‘the people who die in the series will die in this fic too’, ‘the main events which happen in the books will be mentioned here’, and so on. but i’m not sure that i think it goes beyond that.
and the reason for that, is that i have never seen anything which purports to be canon compliant beyond chronology - including my own work - which actually is.
there are several reasons for this:
the first is something which, if you’ve read other posts on this blog, you will know is a common refrain of mine - that the series is bound by specific genre conventions. if authors are transferring the action into a genre different from the ones the series makes use of, they are not writing something which is canon compliant, but canon coherent.
the second is that if authors are filling in gaps which are missing from the series - above all, the marauders-era or post-war-pre-epilogue timeline - they are doing something which is materially no different from writing a non-canon ship. i.e. writing exactly what they want. if your fic is crammed with original characters, or your marauders listen to cool muggle music, or you’ve spent more than twenty seconds thinking about the wizarding political or legal system then i love that for you - this is good and everyone should do it. but it’s not canon compliant. it’s canon coherent.
the third - and undoubtedly most controversial - is that you cannot write something canon compliant and hold the principle that the author is dead. because we know exactly how jkr thinks that canon should be interpreted, and this is often in ways which are - to borrow a phrase from ursula le guin - rather ethically mean-spirited. jkr’s views on fairness, violence, class, motherhood, love, and - of course - gender weave themselves into the narrative in ways which cannot simply be written off as ‘oh, it’s just harry’s perspective.’
i believe we have a moral imperative to know what she thinks and to interrogate the ways in which this appears in the canon text. i also think - obviously - that we don’t have to agree with what she thinks in order to write things which feel close to canon. and i don’t agree with her - not only when it comes to her views on trans people, which are actively harmful - but also when it comes to things like the fact that she’s clearly someone who’s rather vindictive, but who believes that this vindictiveness is really a strong sense of fairness (look, for example, at the dichotomy between how the text presents violence against people it thinks ‘deserve’ it - harry using the cruciatus curse on amycus carrow being a great example, neither harry, nor mcgonagall, nor the narrative give a fuck - and those it thinks don't). or the fact that her own experience of both motherhood and daughterhood - an experience which was clearly very traumatic for her (her mother died of multiple sclerosis, her first husband was violent towards her, she has an extremely difficult relationship with her father) - drives the series’ prioritisation of sacrificial motherhood, criticism towards mothers who don’t make their children the focus of their entire world, and certain coolness towards fathers (especially absentee ones - who will be blamed by the narrative for being murdered by their own sons). or the fact that she has extremely narrow views on cisgender women, even before her views on trans women are taken into account, which turn up again and again in how female characters we are not supposed to be sympathetic towards are written.
i am not, of course, suggesting that writing a fic which is heavily based in canon means that an author supports jkr’s views. what i am saying instead is that fics which engage with questions such as how harry understands violence against the bad guys in ways which go beyond ‘lol, lmao’ or which write lavender as a person whose fondness for stereotypical femininity doesn’t make her insubstantial or which point out that the narrative blaming merope gaunt for dying directly justifies everything voldemort believes are canon coherent.
and, actually, i think that this broader term - canon coherent - is a better one to talk about the non-chronological aspects of canon compliance. because the dividing line between canon compliant fics and canon divergent ones is incredibly arbitrary, and often doesn’t take into account how close to canon the writing in otherwise canon divergent stories often is. after all, if someone writes a story in which harry feels exactly like his canon self, except that the romantic partner he ends up with isn’t ginny, that is arguably more canon compliant than a piece of happy-ever-after hinny in which ginny is a doormat who gives up her career to be harry’s bang maid and harry speaks like he’s had twenty years of therapy. but only one of these pieces will be welcomed onto canon compliant rec-lists and into canon compliant discussion spaces.
[and it’s worth mentioning that plenty of canon compliant only spaces do allow flexibility - above all in being open to interpretations of characters such as james, harry, and hermione in which they are not white. this is good and they should continue to do this, but we can go further, especially in accepting queer interpretations of the main characters into canon compliant discussion.]
i also think - and i’m aware this may sound cruel - that thinking in terms of canon coherence, rather than compliance and divergence, would be good for everybody’s ego. i can acknowledge that plenty of people who diverge from canon can be dicks about it - and i think that the criticism people who prefer the canon endgame ships often get for being ‘boring’ (and, in the case of ships such as remadora, ‘homophobic’) is bullshit - but the canon compliant girlies (gender neutral) are, in many cases, no better. it is not harder to write something ‘canon compliant’ - not least because, as discussed, you’re not - and it is not evidence of an author engaging more seriously with the text and its themes. there is a tendency i have noticed in the fandom spaces i inhabit, many of which feature people whose preference is for the canon ships etc., for non canon pairings to be treated as - essentially - crack ships, especially in stories which are light or whimsical in tone. but when i say that writing on tomarry or snarry or snack or snapemort or drarry or riddledore or wolfstar or what have you can deliver characterisation and worldbuilding and narrative construction which feels infinitely more plausible than many ‘canon compliant’ pieces of writing, i mean this entirely seriously.
and i think it would be good if the dividing line which leads many people to say ‘i don’t read canon divergent fics’ or ‘i don’t read canon compliant fics’ was instead blended into a preference for fics which are canon coherent or otherwise. we would all learn something.
18. it’s absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on…
delphini.
another reason why canon coherence over canon compliance is valuable is it means that one can pretend the cursed child doesn’t exist.
but i would like to make a case for the fact that delphini as a concept (so, nothing like the way she’s written in that play…) makes sense and is a character i’d like to see added to more stuff. she works within both voldemort and bellatrix’s canonical arcs, she gives rodolphus something to do post-war after he spends canon being futile, imagine how funny it would be if teddy had a crush on her, george-michael and maeby style (truly les cousins dangereux), imagine how funny it would be if she is the spitting image of her muggle grandfather and her dad’s having a crisis every time he sees her, imagine her trying to parent trap voldemort and bellatrix into actually falling in love…
you can do serious things with her too - in fact, i have - but, as someone who thinks anything is improved by someone spindly and vaguely sinister, i think she’s a hoot and she deserves to turn up in more things.
21: what part of canon do you think is overhyped?
my eyes were bone dry when dobby-ex-machina died.
22: what is your favourite part of canon, which everyone else ignores?
that harry is a luxury boy. let my man buy his solid gold cauldron, hagrid, don’t be a narc.
[in general, i don't love versions of harry which show him as really abstemious or austere - he's pretty careless with his possessions and he doesn't regard the expensive things he owns as something to be unusually protective over. in his adulthood, he's 100% making sure his shed is stocked with the best brooms on the market and buying himself a little treat whenever he's feeling spenny.]

let me out my head, let my mind run free / let me just pretend that I feel like me / need a flicker start ‘cause I’m ready / anything to spark a new beginning
That murky summer was the longest of Eddie’s life. It had started in rapid-fire panic and death like a blockbuster horror flick, and tapered off to a dull ache that seemed to stretch over his body and soul like a shaky meniscus.
He moved slow, that summer. He’d never thought too much about his body except as something that had inconvenient wants and needs sometimes; it cleaned out the fridge and cupboards faster than Wayne could fill them, it kept shifting and fidgeting when he knew damn well that he had to sit still, it had strange hungers that he swallowed down again and again.
In the spring, he’d opened his eyes to a pea-soup fog of pain, and for a little while it had felt like he didn’t have a body at all, just a useless collection of twitching flesh pieces strung together with chicken wire.
It got better. The docs threw around words like “miracle,” but it didn’t feel much like one. Mostly it just felt like getting back to his old body, but with all the dials turned down. Slower, especially at first, and stiffer, and weaker. Everything took twice as long to do, and consequently the summer became longer and longer. It might’ve had the same number of minutes in it that all of Eddie’s summers always had, but every one of those minutes was soaked through with a grey kind of languor.
Dustin didn’t really get it, but he kept coming around anyway. With him came Steve Harrington.
Steve didn’t talk to Eddie a lot. Not that summer. Not at first. He was just sort of there, flipping through a magazine in the corner of Eddie’s hospital room like a blurry apparition, then shepherding in Dustin and sometimes Mike and Lucas (and even Erica, once or twice) while Eddie held exhausted court from a recliner, handing them off like a pack of puppies for Eddie to watch for a couple hours.
Eventually, Eddie roused himself enough to ask: “Where do you even go while they’re here, man?”
“Just around, I don’t know,” said Steve. “I drive around. It’s nice out.”
“That’s really dumb. Just stay here,” Eddie told him. So after that, Steve stayed.
It was easier when Steve could say hey dickheads, Eddie’s tired, let’s go. And then ten or fifteen or twenty minutes later it’d be quiet again, and most of the time Eddie wouldn’t even bother  moving, he’d just curl up and fall asleep on the recliner.
He was just so worn-out all the time. There didn’t seem to be any such thing as rest for him. Even when he wasn’t actually sleepy, getting through the day felt like slogging through calf-deep sand.
The first time Steve showed up by himself, Eddie wasn’t sure what to make of it.
“I thought Henderson left for camp this week,” he said. Steve had a key by that point, to save Eddie having to get the door all the time, so he’d just walked in and started unloading groceries.
“Yeah,” said Steve, like it was obvious. “That’s why he’s not here.”
Eddie didn’t ask the conspicuous follow-up question, but he thought it real hard as Steve shut the fridge.
Maybe the bat bites had psychically linked them after all, because Steve huffed out a sigh and turned around. “I brought a couple of those movies you like—the werewolf one and the zombie one. Plus we just got Jewel of the Nile, so I figured if you wanted a change of pace…” Steve wiggled his eyebrows, and Eddie found himself laughing without really meaning to.
“You thought I’d like Jewel of the Nile for a chance of pace?”
“No, I thought I’d like Jewel of the Nile and you’d put up with it because you’re such a good friend,” Steve said. “For a change of pace.”
So that’s how Eddie found out they were friends.
After that, it was easier. That was about the time Eddie started being able to move around a lot better too, so it all got tangled up in his head: Steve, and movement. Freedom, and Steve.
It was a lot to put on Steve’s shoulders, so mostly Eddie tried not to. But Steve kept coming around by himself sometimes even after Dustin got back from camp, and the back half of the summer passed a little smoother and a little sweeter like that.
The kids started preparing to go back to school, and Eddie didn’t. Steve very blatantly tried not to ask about it until one evening, sitting on the porch, he finally said: “School.”
He pressed his lips together like he hadn’t even meant to say that much. Eddie just shrugged.
“Got my pity diploma in the mail, dude.”
“What? When?”
“Like, uh. A month ago? Maybe two?”
“Shit, man. You shoulda told me, I’d have—we’d have—the kids’d go nuts, you know that.”
“Yeah, I know that.”
“What, uh. What’re you planning? Like, what’s next?”
Eddie rolled his shoulders. “I dunno. What’s next for you?”
Steve leaned back, bracing himself on his hands and looking up at the violet sky. After a moment, he said, “Guess I don’t know either. Maybe we both need, like…a fresh start. We could, I don’t know. Go somewhere.”
“Ste-eve Harrington.” Eddie smiled up at him. “Are you asking me to run away with you? Whatever will the society papers think?”
Steve didn’t take the bait, though. He just grinned back at Eddie and said, “Maybe I am. Whatcha gonna do about it, Munson?”
Eddie hesitated, but what did he have to lose? Or rather—what did he have to gain?
He reached out, slow and careful, and settled his hand over Steve’s. It felt like a circuit connecting. Like something was clicking back together inside of Eddie at last.
Steve didn’t say anything about it, but he didn’t move, either. They just sat there for a while in the twilight, watching the light change.
DVD extra:
“I’m going to see Eddie!” Lucas hollered, halfway out the door. “I’ll be back by dinner!”
“Uh-huh, and I’m not good enough for your stupid boys’ club?” Erica shrieked, tearing around the corner and skidding to a stop so she could plant her hands on her hips and glare at Lucas.
“What?” said Lucas.
“It’s just a little suspicious how there’s no girls allowed when you go see that long-haired freak,” she sniffed.
“Do you…want to come with me?” Lucas said slowly.
“Of course I don’t, dumbass! Why would I want to go?” Erica pushed past Lucas, swinging her backpack over her shoulder. “But someone’s gotta make sure you stupid boys don’t burn the place down.”
“Hey, Lucas,” called Steve, leaning out of the car window. “Erica coming with us today?”
Lucas made frantic throat-cutting motions.
“Huh?” said Steve. “She’s…not coming with us?”
Lucas groaned and jogged up to the car. “She’s coming, just don’t talk about it,” he hissed.
He thought for a second about trying to slide over the hood of the car like cool guys in the movies, but if he messed it up, Erica would never let him live it down. She’d be telling the story at his wedding and his funeral. So he just walked around to the passenger side like a normal person and got in.
“Seatbelts,” said Steve.
“I remember you being less of a nerd,” said Erica. “Now move it, the king of the nerds is waiting.”
