Words to Avoid When Talking About Children's Books
Two adults and two children's books today. I read Jessica Love's A Bed of Stars, a memoir of a camping trip the narrator took with her father. I'm going to have to be careful of my words in this blog, because it's much too easy to throw around words like cute and sweet. You won't hear me using "cute" or "nice" - they're words so vague as to have no definition. However, A Bed of Stars is sweet. It's a mellow memory, not a grand adventure, but remarkable for the narrator because of the enjoyment she felt sharing the night sky with her father from their place in the bed of his truck. (Another term you won't read here is "bonding experience" - years of editing high school yearbook sports pages spoilt those words for me - ugh.)
I also read Not Quite Narwhal, by Jessie Sima. This one just barely avoids nauseating cuteness - reasonable people may disagree. A unicorn is born under the ocean to a group of narwhals. He's not very good at swimming like a narwhal, but he tries valiantly. One day he discovers unicorns, and learns that he can be a very skilled land-based horn-bearing creature - but he misses his narwhal family. It's a clever juxtaposition and meditation on where we belong, and what happens when we belong to two places and neither at the same time. It's not a heavy-hitting message - as delicate as the artwork. There's a lot of gooey, treacly unicorn literature out there for younger readers, but this one is not that.
When Looking for Jane fell into my lap, I was a bit curious, but as soon as I opened the flap I wanted to read it. "Jane", as I was hoping, does not refer to a person but the widespread underground movement on college campuses in the late 1960s dedicated to helping desperate women end unwanted pregnancies. I watched an excellent documentary at the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) last year. and at the same time as I was binge-watching the TV drama Cold Case this fall, I saw an episode ("Volunteers") that alluded to Jane's activities as well. The women of Jane are as impressive as the Freedom Riders - they risk incarceration to gather women, connect them with non-abusive medical doctors willing to perform the procedure, learn to perform it themselves, and set up cut-outs so that no one can identify each other, thus jeopardizing the system. According to their records, no woman ever died under Jane's care who had not arrived in serious trouble already. Anyway, really want to read this one!
Then there's this odd little item: What You Are Looking For Is In The Library. One of my co-workers told me she was reading it for an online book group she's in when she saw it on my pile of interests of the day. Since my card is still blocked, I gave it to her to check out. It's a smaller-sized book with a window and a cat on the cover - and it calls itself "a novel", title notwithstanding. Japanese author Michiko Aoyama tells a story about a librarian who can sense (as any good librarian should be able to) exactly which book each patron needs. What's not to like? I need to make a list of books about libraries, because they all sound enchanting, and as I believe in libraries as transformative places, this one would fit my worldview perfectly. Plus, I read so little Japanese literature - time to expand my horizons a bit!
Tom & Harry Holland Short ‘Last Call’ Charms Sands International Film Festival Opening-Night Gala
Also in the building this evening was Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, who accompanied his younger brother Harry up to Scotland to present Last Call, a short project they shot together in London. The film follows a desperate mother searching for a way to reconnect with her son. Tom stars opposite veteran Scottish actress Lindsay Duncan (Blackbird) in the pic, which first screened at Tribeca. The audience inside The Byre Theatre in St Andrews was charmed by the short, with many visitors remarking on its ambition and skill following the screening. Running over a brisk 19 minutes, the short could be compared, thematically, to Andrew Haigh’s last film All of Us Strangers.
Introducing Last Call alongside Trzebiatowska, Harry said he crafted the pic while helping out around the set of his brother’s film 2021 war film Cherry, shot by the Russos.
“When I wrote the film we were in Cleveland, Ohio, working on Cherry and I was struggling with my own mental health,” Harry said. “I knew I wanted to create something and the theme of mental health would be at the forefront of whatever I wrote.”
He added: “As I look back at the film now — I wrote it five years ago — the theme and topic feel as topical now as it did all those years ago.”
"Americanized" | Short Film from Erica Eng on Vimeo.
Growing up in Oakland’s hip-hop culture, Eng struggles with her Chinese American identity. To her high school basketball team, she’s just that girl who sits on the bench, but to the Asian kids she’s "Americanized." As her sophomore year of high school comes to an end, Eng tries to find a sense of belonging within the two worlds that don't accept her.

Tito Schipa (1888-1965) was a tremendously gifted lyric tenor whose five decade career encompassed opera, concert, film, recording, radio and TV. Born Raffaele Attilio Amedeo Schipa in Lecce on December 27, 1888 (although his birth was not registered until January 2 of 1889 to delay his eventual military service), he showed early promise as a singer and began studying privately at the age of 11. Schipa’s earliest musical experiences included soloing with his church choir and singing in the children’s chorus of local productions of Carmen and La Bohème. Following a brief period at a local seminary, the young singer returned to music, beginning studies with Alceste Gerunda. During his five years under Gerunda’s tutelage, Schipa not only solidified his vocal technique but learned composition as well. His operatic debut took place a little over a month after his 20th birthday, on February 4, 1909. The role was to become a favorite that Schipa was still singing 45 years later, Alfredo in La Traviata. The venue was, sadly, the poorest of 3rd rate houses, the Teatro Facchinetti in Vercelli, filled to the rafters with a raucous assembly of locals. It was not the most auspicious of debuts and led to a series of cut-rate tours for which the fledgling tenor only received travel and lodging expenses.
Luckily, Schipa’s fortunes improved and by 1913, he had launched his international career with appearances at Buenos Aires’ Teatro Colón. Important debuts in Montevideo, Rio and São Paulo followed and Schipa found himself in demand throughout South America. The tenor was also becoming quite popular in his homeland, with appearances in Naples, Bari, Milan, Rome and Genoa. His repertoire had grown to 20 roles, including The Duke in Rigoletto, Elvino in La Sonnambula, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Faust in both Gounod’s and Boito’s operas and the title role in Werther. Schipa’s La Scala debut occurred in December of 1916 as Vladimir in Prince Igor. Three months later, he sang the world premiere of La Rondine in Monte Carlo.
Schipa’s US debut took place in Chicago as the Duke in Rigoletto on December 4, 1919. He became a beloved figure in the Windy City, frequently appearing at the Ravinia Festival during the summer months. Much of his time in the US was spent on tour and although he was a frequent guest at New York’s Lexington Theater, he avoided the Metropolitan Opera. This finally changed in 1932 when the tenor debuted as Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore. His performance was warmly received by the public and critics praised him as “an artist of taste, refinement and elegance”. Schipa sang a total of eight roles during his four seasons with the company, including the leads in Don Giovanni, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Traviata, Mignon, Manon and Don Pasquale. His last season at the Met (1941) concluded with a Barbiere di Siviglia on tour in Cleveland. Critics again praised his style but remarked that the voice had lost much of its freedom and strength. The tenor had also lost much of his upper range. Even in his prime, the voice stopped at B natural…a note the tenor used sparingly. At no great age, Schipa began to transpose to avoid top notes. Luckily, the accomplished music scribe wrote out his own transposed orchestra scores and brought them wherever he went.
By the mid 1940s, Schipa’s repertoire of 45 roles had been reduced to a handful of operas that didn’t require a plethora of top notes. The mainstays were La Traviata, Barbiere di Siviglia, Elisir d’Amore, Don Pasquale, Lucia di Lammermoor, L’Arlesiana, Manon and Werther. After a final Nemorino at Bari’s Teatro Petruzelli in April of 1955, the 66 year old tenor retired from the opera stage. Extravagant living, a costly divorce as well as bad investments had stripped Schipa of his fortune and he was compelled to continue concertizing. A farewell tour culminated in a series of recitals in 1962-63, after which the tenor retired to New York. Following a battle with diabetes, Schipa died on December 16, 1965, just two weeks shy of his 77th birthday.
Tito Schipa’s voice was not a heroic, ringing instrument. His was a small, sometimes husky voice, but one that he used with absolute mastery. During his prime, he had no trouble making himself heard, even in the largest theaters. Sadly, many remember him best from his final years, when his voice was in decline. Despite dwindling vocal resources, Schipa’s impeccable artistry and taste remained with him to the very end. Fortunately, these attributes have become the legacy of the great tenore di grazia.
Tito Schipa made over 400 recordings between 1913 and 1964 for The Gramophone Company, Victor, Pathé, as well as live and private recordings. Here, Schipa sings "Manolita". This was recorded on November 27, 1962, New York, Town Hall.
