Crochet Granny Shorts
A nice pair of Crochet Granny Shorts may be hard to find online. Yarnspirations just released a free pattern. There are several sizes that include in the adult sizing of extra small to 4 extra large. Depending on the size, they are all just granny squares that are attached to form shorts. You can see the schematics of the different sizes that are available in the free pattern. The granny square…

Sharing my 2023 wellness project, please, and wishing a Happy New Year, All! 🧶🎉
Tumblr media
Wonky as it be, this stashghan helped me manage some fairly blah times. ❤
The project was inspired by a notoriously uncredited pinterest pic (below left*) which - somehow - led me to recall a long ago dream project (right) and was then encouraged by my precious friend @shesanearthgirl 🦋
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found some crochet charts and tutorials to lead me with making a granny square ripple. Next, I sorted yarn stash color groups to have five shades in each: four colors for a mix of 3-round squares; and a fifth color to use for a fourth jayg (join-as-you-go) round connecting the squares point-to-point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each 'diamond' band of squares was edged on either side with a row of white granny stitch ripple followed by a couple random colors from the squares, and then finished with a black row.**
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made a couple color bands and then tested my plan to connect them with a black-edged white diamond. THIS (above right) was my pure happy moment for sure! 😁🧶
Next step was making 3-round granny squares in white and connecting them with a fourth row in black jayg.
Tumblr media
The real beauty of this overall project turned out being the ability to lay the color bands and adjust with a visual before committing to the stitched sequence.
Tumblr media
Ideally, I would have made six color bands. As it happened with five bands, the throw ended a bit short so I needed to add white diamond bands to either end. It's not awful, but I think it would have been better to cap the ends in the larger color blocks.
The End... and happy forever! 🎉🧶🍻
* if you are able to track the rightful maker of this crochet, please share so I can credit as due
** I realized in hindsight that it was better to make the color bands WITHOUT the final row of black, and rather make that final black row of the color bands in jayg connecting to the black row of the white diamond bands.

okay so pardon me as I wax poetic late at night about solarpunk again but like
and once again, I'm biased because I'm co-hosting the aesthetic week event, you know the drill, but
I feel like sharing our projects--big and small--are so important because they can inspire other people to do their own. And obviously this can be about sharing news about climate action, and scientific projects and progress and discoveries, but tonight I'm thinking about crocheting.
As we think about the future we want to create as solarpunks, we trade ideas. And oftentimes a lot of the ideas we trade are about futures with barter systems, where many many people do crafts like sewing and mending and knitting and the like. But--and I could easily be the only one but I feel like I'm not--I personally was too nervous to start many crafts myself. Because I didn't know what I'd do with the craft, if I was even capable of it, or if it was too big and complex for me. I'd been tossing around the idea of learning how to crochet for years, and my mom's been tossing the idea around just as long if not even longer for herself, but y'know what brought me over? You know what finally got me to give it a shot?
An online Solarpunk friend sharing pictures of a bag.
I saw that bag and I went 'huh maybe I could do something like that,' and within a few days I'd bought a bunch of yarns and hooks and was on a call (with a different online friend) learning how to do some basic stitches and knots to get started. By the end of the night, I was teaching myself how to make granny squares, with the help of a (different) online friend writing instructions to help me out as I got stuck.
And maybe I finish my bag, or my scarf, and I post a picture online--not even a professional, pinterest-ready photo, just a quick pic of it laid across my bed or something--and I inspire someone else to start crocheting. Hell, I've already inspired my mom to take a crack at it once the Christmas season is over.
But it doesn't even have to be me. It doesn't even have to be crocheting. Maybe someone posts a picture of a hat they just finished knitting, and someone else decides to pick up a loom or some knitting needles. Maybe someone crafts a birdhouse or a desk or a bench out of wood, and someone picks up a hammer for the first time. Maybe someone crafts something awesome out of clay and wire, and someone gets inspired for a new project. It can even be across artforms! Maybe someone sews an awesome dress, and someone else is inspired to write a short story by it. Maybe someone writes a short story, and someone else goes to paint a mural somewhere inspired by a scene in that story.
And in a sense I find it incredibly solarpunk. To inspire one another to learn and grow, develop new skills, to always find inspiration and hope to keep trying new stuff.
Some people laugh and scoff at the idea of posting ~aesthetique~ homemade clothes to the solarpunk tag, a handful think the whole aesthetic week event is pointless, but I find it the opposite. Solarpunk is about revolution, but it can't always be big revolutions. Sometimes its the small revolution of picking up a craft that changes your life, or creating an image that inspires others to fight for a better future. It can be about writing something that makes others question why things are the way they are, when they can be better. Sometimes the desire for a nice knit scarf can be the start of a mini barter system, or become part of the mutual aid we all dream of.
I feel like I had a point with this but I forgot. But uhm... yeah.

“Thanks Joe, you’re the best.” I sighed, tippy toeing up to take the warm cup of coffee from the older man in his trailer.
“Ahh, don’t worry about it!” He said, waving his hand at me. “It’s on the house yeah?”
I hummed, settling back down on my feet and carefully took a sip out of the disposable cup. Groaning when the warm liquid ran down my throat, warming up my body. The bitter sweetness sedating my morning hunger.
“You are still the best.” I huffed out, seeing my breath in the crisp, dawn air as I brought my lips back down to drink the liquid once more.
“Hey, slow down with that!” He waved at me. “Don’t want you to have a stomachache now. You’re one of the best here!”
“Awww, is Mr. Holder admitting something?” I teased him, taking another sip out of my coffee, but slower. Taking his words into consideration. I really wasn’t in a mood or position for a tummy ache.
“Aaah, I swear you guys are addicted to those things.” He huffed, preparing another order for someone else while he flipped some food in a pan as it sizzled.
“Geez, I hope not.” I said, looking down at my cup like it cursed me. My radio giving me some static. “But you do make the best coffee around.”
“Don’t flatter me, youngster.” He countered, putting ketchup on the order. “You know I make the best coffee.”
“That you do.” I agreed, raising up my cup for him. Taking yet another sip out of it and answering my radio. Getting details of an ‘old wild lady’ that's been refusing to get back into her home with her nurse.
“Well, I guess I'll see you around Joe.” I sighed, putting my hand in my jacket pocket to find the car keys. “Duty calls.”
“I’ll see you around, Sergeant!” He yelled out to me while I made my way towards the police car. Finally, getting the keys out of my pocket and unlocking the car with the keys and a beep.
Opening the driver door, I plopped right down in the seat with another sigh and placed my cup in the cup holder before closing my door and putting the key into the ignition. The vehicle starting up with a soft rumble.
Rubbing my hands together, I blew into them and shivered before turning up the heat in the car and moved the vents towards me. Geez, who decided this morning was going to be this cold?
Putting a hand on the wheel, I put the other hand to shift my gear into ‘reverse’ and looked backwards before pulling out smoothly. Turning my torso back around to look in front of me, I shifted my gear to ‘drive’ and slowly drove up to the stop sign to get out of the parking lot.
Flipping on my blinker, I looked both ways. Watching for a clear spot before driving off onto the mainroad and made my way to the old lady’s address. Picking up my cup and taking a sip out of it while I was at it. Warming up my body once more.
Stopping behind another police cruiser. I put the car in park and observed how this situation was playing out for a moment. Shifting and preparing my vest.
There was, in fact, an old lady dressed in a white floral shirt with a light brown crocheted denim-jacket and a beige crochet skirt with beige tights and black loafers on, waddling up and down the sidewalk. Cursing up a storm to a cop I never saw in the division. His hands coming up in surrender as the old lady stalks up to him, waving her wooden cane at him.
It honestly was an amusing sight to see. Well, until she started wacking him with it.
Stepping out of my car, I closed the door behind me and walked towards the very agitated granny. Shifting my vest more comfortably, resting my hands on the neckline of it.
“Whoa there Ms. Would you mind not hitting my fellow recruit here? It is a crime you know.” I stated, stopping just short of her, not wanting to get thwacked by her cane next.
The lady huffed, glaring at the young man and settled her cane back to the ground. Grumbling underneath her breath.
“You see, that man!” The lady started, lifting her cane back up and pointed it at a man on her house porch that was getting talked to by another officer. “He’s not supposed to be here!”
“I’m your nurse!” The man suddenly yelled back. “I come here every Monday, Wednesday and Friday!”
“Why isn’t he supposed to not be here ma’am?” I asked, shifting my weight as she turned her sights back onto me.
“My Marine doesn’t like him!” She said, wobbling a little in her shifting steps. “Been seeing things that were there, but now they're gone. Stolen!”
“And you believe he’s been stealing from your home?” I questioned, watching as another police cruiser pulled up to the sidewalk behind the lady.
“I know he’s been stealing from my home! Necklaces, bracelets, rings, all gone!” She grumbled, stomping her cane into the sidewalk. “That hoodlum has been stealing from me ever since he was hired!”
“I have not!” The man yelled back, throwing his hands up in the air. The officer over there giving him a verbal warning.
Sucking on my teeth, I watched the officer from the cruiser jogging up to the little group.
“Hey, I can take over for you two. Figured you needed some time to get your new boot situated.” Officer Duran said. Wait, new boot? Looking to the younger male to my left, I observed him more closely. It was no wonder I didn’t recognize him the first time.
He was a young male possibly in his early 20’s or 30’s. No taller than a teenager. Brown eyes and golden brown hair in the style of an undercut. Clean shaven too, but boot? Since when?
“Yeah, Sargent Zavala picked you as a candidate.” Duran informed me, turning her attention to the lady as I gave a ‘huh?’
Shouldn’t he have come to me beforehand and ask me about it? Did I accidentally agree to something I wasn’t aware of? No, Zavala wouldn’t do that, would he? Only one way to find out.
“…Come on then, boot.” I gestured to the recruit to follow me. “Let's get you properly set up.”
“Really? You don’t look too thrilled to have me as your recruit though.” He speaks, quickly following me to the cruiser.
“I’m not.” I huffed, pulling open the driver door by the handle.
Briskly entering the doors of the department. I headed straight for Zavala office. Nearly bumping into several people and Astartes alike.
“Sorry there big guy.” I grumbled, sliding past a blue ultramarine and into Zavalas’ office where he sat, looking through some files as gently as I could, closed the door behind me.
“Since when was I to be assigned a boot?” I immediately started, folding my arms. “I don't recall signing up for one.”
“That right, you didn’t.” Zavala confirmed one of many of my concerns, plopping the files he had in his hands on the desk.
“Then why did I get a recruit assigned to me?” I asked, leaning all my weight to one side. “I’m a Sergeant not a training officer.”
“I know that, but a recruit was assigned to you because I believe you can train him well.” Zavala spoke, leaning forward in his chair to place his arms on his desk. “There were also more recruits that came in and they need their training.”
I huffed, not liking that he was right as he made a rather good counter on that one. Can’t leave the recruits untrained. It doesn’t make the department or the people inside look good.
“And Xerxes is to accompany you on your patrols.” Zavala said, pointing past me.
“Who? What?” I questioned, turning to look out the window the Sergeant pointed at, spotting the Ultramarine that I swiveled to get into here. “A Space Marine? Why?”
“Considering your latest… lost. He’s to monitor your health.” He responded, picking up another pile of papers on his desk and tapping them on his desk. Stacking them nicely off to the side.
“You think, assigning a Space Marine and a recruit to me is to help me?” I scoffed, unfolding my arms. “To replace that?”
Did he think I couldn't take care of myself? That I wasn’t capable of this job?
“I am not asking you to replace what once was. I am asking you to train a recruit and watch your health.” Zavala sighed, standing up from his desk. “Don’t think I haven’t seen you pulling extra.”
“I fought in battles. What makes you think I can’t overcome this one too?” I asked a little too quickly for my liking. My eyebrows scrunching up at the many thoughts going through my head.
“This is not about fighting battles, Sergeant.” Zavalas’ tone dropped, his chestnut eyes sternly looking at me. “This is about your health and your job. Not a war, not a battle. Your job.”
I couldn’t say anything, knowing he was right. Yet it still hurt to think I must be babysat by a Space Marine. That I looked like I couldn’t take care of myself. Though, it was my problem.
“I just– .” He sighed, closing his eyes, coming over and placing his hand on my shoulder. “I don’t want our best to fall.”
Those words should have soothed me down, and they did slightly, for being the “best,” but I kept thinking that he could find somebody else to do it. Find someone else that was better. That he could do their own damn dirty work. That I know I wasn’t the best, but at the same time it was my whole career. It’s all I ever known and be best at.
I twisted my tongue and bit down on it, shutting myself up to avoid anymore of my stupid thoughts. I know I wasn’t in the best of health. How could you not? How could I not?
“Go and meet Xerxes and give your boot a chance, Sergeant.” Zavala said, patting me on the shoulder, telling me that I was dismissed despite us being the same rank as one another.
“I’ll be watching your progression.”

helppp i’m super super new to crocheting, i can confidently do the chain stitch and single crochet stitch but that’s about it so far… i wanna learn the other essential stitches as well of course but like, i think i want to start on my first project?
but i don’t know what would be suitable for a COMPLETE beginner like me :< i thought about granny squares maybe? but they use so many different stitches and i get super frustrated super easily :((
so yes in short, if anyone out there has some recommendations as to what a crochet newbie with zero projects under their belt could do as their first, let me know!!!

Granny Hexagon Sweater #4
This was the second sweater I made for myself, and probably my favorite to date! I absolutely love everything about how it came out, from the length to the weight of the fabric, to the colors. I didn’t realize how much of my wardrobe was in these blues and mauves until I made this sweater, and I wear it all the time now. It was a super quick make, too, because it’s cropped and my arms are so short that the sleeves took next to no time to finish 😂
This sweater was made with a US size K hook and Caron Jumbo Ombre yarn in Blush and Blue. The cuffs were knitted in a 1x1 rib with US size 8 needles. For the border, I did two rows of single crochet, a row of twisted double crochet, and two more rows of single crochet. I love the way the eyelets in the double crochet echo the spaces in the granny stitch, and I think it’s my favorite sweater border so far!

I was tagged by @jewelsrulz . Thank you. 💖💖💖
Last song: SOS by ABBA
Currently reading: Does FanFiction count. I have a backlog of a few stories I’ve saved in drafts. So I’m slowly working myself through those. Other than that, nothing else. The mental capacity is at zero. That nagging anxiety won’t let go until I get my god damn papers.
Last film: I’ve rewatched Alien and Aliens. As odd as this sounds, I find them to be comfort movies. 🙂🙃🙂
Currently craving: Homemade chocolate pudding.
Three ships: Stucky, Damerey, FinnPoe
First ship: I don’t remember if this was my true first ship, cause fandom or the term fandom wasn’t part of my life until my early thirties, but I do remember wanting to see Janeway and Chakotey together. Like ugh…
Fave colour: Blue and green spectrum.
Currently working on: This, and another massive crochet blanket. Another multi colored, multi stitch beast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s 300 stitches across and will be similar to the leftover yarn blanket I’ve made before but like BIGGER.
So far I’m about 60 rows in. Aside from singles, half doubles, doubles, trebles, and worked back-loop rows, I’ve already worked the following patterns/stitches:
granny stitch
short spike stitch (over doubles)
bullion stitch
Catherine’s wheel
alternating front-post back-post stitch using doubles
star stitch
wave stitch pattern
tulip stitch pattern
dragon fly stitch pattern
braided puff stitch (I absolutely love that one and might make a scarf with that particular stitch)
Jasmine stitch
Separating rows to divide sections are in counts of 9 half doubles and 1 bobble.
I’m tagging @ohtobeleah @bradshawsbaby @roosterforme @mynameismckenziemae @just-in-case-iloveyou @chromium-siren @virtie333 @curiouswildi @angelbabyyy99 @sailor-aviator and whoever else wishes to do this. No pressure 💖💖💖, (and if you’ve done this already, disregard the tag).

My summer hols makes (may be inspo?):
🧶Granny square mittens [tutorial] I’ve added small charms, may be they’re cute? idk
🍵🐱 If you happen to read this in Melbourne, Australia (who knows?) there is a super cool place in Elsternwick called Glaze it where you rock up and paint any bisque-fired item they already have on hand (and it’s lots that they have!) They glaze it for you and do the final firing. Too much fun! My mug was ready in two days for a pick up, and it’s a rocket blast in ceramic terms.
🪴Hanging macrame pocket and a long thingie to house my mother air plant and her babes [tutorial for the pocket]
🕯️Candle with beeswax leftovers and a thrifted tea cup. Slurpy-slurp!
🪡 I had a million of short-ish yarn pieces from various projects I’ve accumulated in a few years. I’ve tied them all together, made a massive ball and crocheted a small pillow for my bottom. The back is also made with leftover fabric pieces, and i’ve filled it with my wool felt snippets. Gee, I’m very thrifty.

more things I'm learning in my quest to update my winter style
I think I have a short torso? at least compared to the torso length a lot of these clothes seem to expect me to have. I just don't think it's possible that all of these pants are supposed to come up to just below my bra. I think I'm supposed to have about 6 more inches of just torso, because the legs of stuff rarely need to be hemmed. I'm just going to keep trying to find ways to make the waistline not look like a neckline.
I am going into all of this knowing that I will lose the battle to not have cat hair on all my clothes. I knew when I got Popcorn that everything I own would be covered in cat hair, I just got some really good lint rollers. I should put one on a loop and hang it up next to the front door with my keys and umbrellas actually.
I personally feel better about myself when I'm wearing more colorful items, so I need to keep that in mind when I'm shopping. Neutral color people, live your best life, but I feel so drab and boring when I'm not wearing something that makes a statement.
only tangentially related to the actual clothes, I'm realizing that I don't think I've fully processed the death of one of my aunts. I'm going to her memorial this weekend and I caught myself thinking about how much she'd love talking about these wool sweaters I got (she was a member of the local Irish American Heritage Society or something and she was the genealogy person on this side of the family). I want to hear her talk about sweaters that she got when she went to Ireland or to hear her tell me that my great-great-great-great-great-grandmother was a professional sweater knitter. But I won't be able to, so I need to process that a bit more. Not sure how to do that? but I'll figure it out.
similarly I am tempted to get back into knitting, even though the only things I've ever knit (except for loom knitting) are 1.5 fingerless gloves that I did in the round. I will not actually attempt this. Though maybe I'll try to copy a friend and do a granny square cardigan? I've been crocheting for literally 20 years and I've never done a granny square though.

I still think I'm not getting there with winding the yarns
And I'm trying to remember what I did the last time when I borrowed a winder because I ended up with quite firm cute cakes
Maybe I didn't put the yarn in the little spiral and just fully manually fed it?
Let's find out, I'm not running out of things to wind, after all!
My victims results today, so far: one 100g skein, and four 20g minis
Tumblr media
At least I know that my winder can make WIDE cakes! If I can figure out the height, I will be unstoppable
Also this lemony hand dyed yarn!!! It brought me so much joy!!!!
Can't wait to work with it now, hehehe :3c
Lemony one is for the crocheted Granny Hexagon cardigan, the minis I'm gonna have as backups for Sock Yarn Knit Sweaters (so that in case I'm a bit short while nearly done, I don't have to figure out what big skein to start)

Neptune? Is that you?
As some of you know, I knit and crochet. My current blanket project requires 143 granny squares, and (unless sick or distressed) I have been cranking out 1-2 a day. One skein of yarn provides me with 13 squares (and a bit left over). I’m on the home stretch - completed #130 just moments ago - but this odd thing happened….
As soon as I started with that particular skein of yarn, I “suddenly” started thinking about the weavers of Persian carpets - specifically how some of them deliberately leave some kind of flaw in the final design, because only God is perfect. I idly wondered how, were I so inclined, I could incorporate that into a blanket.
I just finished square #13 of that particular color/skein of yarn - except I was a few yards short and ran out of yarn before I could finish the square. Luckily it is a sort of silvery-green color, and I had some gray yarn which blended fairly well. Ta-da, there’s my “flaw”!
(It turns out that I misread the label and assumed it had the proper amount of yarn.)
So was that Neptune or what?
