Republic System Defender starfighters were a type of craft used by the New Republic. An improved version of the ATL Interceptor, Defenders were not particularly impressive in comparison to advanced starfighters of their time, but were a vast improvement to the aging starfighters of the New Republic navy. Their maneuvering jets allowed them to perform turns and tricks that would destroy a normal starfighter.

This is the Darkstryder box set (1996), the first part of West End Games’ biggest and most ambitious campaign for the D6 Star Wars RPG.
The basic plot: players are part of the crew of the FarStar, a Corellian Corvette tasked by the New Republic with bringing an Imperial war criminal to justice in the backwater Kathol sector. That war criminal was, until recently, the sector’s moff and has a formidable military force and some mysterious weapons at his disposal. Worse, the moff wiped most of the sector data, leaving the FarStar to effectively re-discover the local systems and planets. The ship, whose crew is made up of just as many rogues as it is professional officers, has to explore, scrounge for supplies and generally scrape by to complete their objectives.
Most of the box is dedicated to describing the FarStar and the richly detailed major characters among the crew. There are also six linked adventures that kick off the storyline.
Campaigns of this size weren’t something West End had a lot of experience designing (and, honestly, not a lot of other folks had figured out best practices at this point either). One of the the first missteps is not giving the GM an overview of the whole campaign – you only get enough info to get through what’s in the box. With crazy stuff at the end and no shortage of characters with slow burn dark secrets, this was a huge negative at the time (less so now that the whole campaign has been out for 20 years, but still).
Drawback #2: this was designed for troupe style play, with players running two pregenerated characters (one from the command team, one from the crew) and one custom character. The pre-gens come with scripted plot points, which some folks will hate because railroading. I played in a lightly scripted SW homebrew and thought it was amazing once we got over the slight constraint. Darkstryder has a heavier hand, so I dunno. Your mileage may vary.

WHO WOULD WIN? *VOTING OVER* Kassien vs Akanseh (Round 1)
Kassien (The Old Republic) (Wookieepedia) *WINNER*
Tumblr media
Kassien was a female Rattataki Sith Lord who served the Sith Empire during the Cold War and Galactic War against the Galactic Republic, where she could be found selling armor to Sith Inquisitors on Vaiken Spacedock.
Akanseh (”The Saga Begins” - The DarkStryder Campaign) (Wookieepedia)
Tumblr media
Akanseh was a male Mon Calamari doctor from the planet Dac. A philanthropist and accomplished surgeon, he wanted to use his skills to take medical care to the backwater planets of the galaxy. When the Galactic Empire invaded his homeworld, Akanseh fled and avoided becoming a slave. Hiding for several years, he built a fully automated surgical suite staffed by droids and set out to achieve his goals. Since the surgical suite could be broken down and stowed in the hold of a freighter, Akanseh used free-traders to transport the apparatus from world to world.

The Shintel Enterprise
by Colourbrand
The FarStar's SpecForce Team descends on the planet Shintel in their Dropship…unsure of what awaits them…..
(we used the Dropship from Aliens in our version of the DarkStryder Campaign instead of the Aegis shuttle from the box set)

Shroud Squadron Patch
Concept by me; Art by Skira-Reed
In the long, long ago...in the before times, my former gaming group ran through our GM's version of the DarkStryder Campaign onboard the modified Corvette FarStar.  We decided to name our starfighter contingent SHROUD SQUADRON.  We all liked the name, but no one ever came up with an emblem, so now...some 25 years later...here it is.

Commander Xan Derrycc by jedi-art-trick
Derrycc was my character from my group's version of the DarkStryder Campaign Box Set from West End Game's Star Wars Role Playing Game.
He was originally going to be the Operations Officer, just another member of the Command Crew and regular Navy-type who would run the ship. For those who are familiar with the Campaign, yes he bumped out Darryn Thyte. None of us players ever ran any of the stock characters from the game, so we changed quite a bit of the story. However, as you may know the Captain dies early on, and First Officer Kaiya Adrimetrum becomes Captain, and so Derrycc was promoted to First Officer. Later on, my GM got tired of running the Captain as well as all the NPCs she had to deal with, so soon there was excuses for her not to be there, and then later she was written out and my dude was promoted to Captain.
The basic physical template for his looks started with Sir Kenneth Branagh, from his Hamlet.  When I created Xan I was just getting into Shakespeare, and Kenny's movies helped me become a fan. I always described him as looking like Branagh but with red skin, generally human, kind of a red-skinned Thrawn. Since I had no artist way back when that was the best I could do. In some anachronistic role-playing, my fellow players and GM would describe hims as "satanic" or "devilish" looking.  Apparently, they called him the "Dark Lord of the Bridge".  I wanted him to be humanoid, but also wanted to develop his species.  There is an older version in my gallery as I created the species but am not an artist, it is a work in progress.
Derrycc's race is Eltelaran. I thought of them as a planet that was kicked out of the Old Republic a couple hundred years ago for not keeping a central unified planetary government. They were a planet with still many nations, who temporarily allied to join the Republic, but could not keep it together, so they got the boot. Many of the nations are space-farers thru and thru, given to star sailing and tactics, many of them training from the time of adolescence in the way of naval warfare (much like British midshipmen way way back in the day). I imagined their system or sector somewhat isolated by nebula and asteroids and such, so they had little touch with the rest of the galaxy and no idea the Republic had fallen. Eventually, the Empire saw their martial ability as a threat and rolled in. I figure that they may not have advanced as much technologically given their isolation so it was only their tactical superiority that saved them from complete destruction. Those that did survive limped along to the nearby system of Dak, the Empire's next stop, only to find it in ruins as well, but they joined with the Mon Calamari and helped them convert their cruise ships into warships and train them in tactics.
Some of you may notice the uniform. It is more of what my idea of the Rebel uniform should look like. A little better tailoring than what you saw in Jedi was some slight alterations.
The character himself is a Navy man, born and bred. I was discovering Horatio Hornblower and the Aubrey/Maturin series at the time. Throw in a dash of Captain Picard's stoicism, Captain Kirk's ingenuity, with a little Lt Commander Hunter from Crimson Tide, Bart Mancuso from Hunt for the Red October, and so on...

Star War Rebel Pilot redesign by kvlticon. It seems like the Rebels need a full life support, so this was my idea to take the Rebel Pilot with a faceplate design inspired by the newer BattleStar Galactica
Endor Rebel Commando redesign by kvlticon. In my gaming groups, we imaged the Rebel/NR SpecForce to look more like the Colonial Marines from Aliens as we are all huge aliens fans. Even in our Darkstryder Campaign (starwars.wikia.com/wiki/The_Da…, we used the USCM Drop ship instead of the lame assault shuttle in the module.
Star War Rebel Fleet Trooper redesign by kvlticon. I had this idea in my head for at least 15 years, but when I explained it I would get blank stares. Really, I don't think it is that difficult. Take the dudes you see in the opening of Star Wars, and instead of the black vest they wear make it a black flack vest, add some leg and arm protection, and then mod the helmet to look way cooler but with some recognizable traits of the egg shells they wore.

The Siege of Kolatill
by Colourbrand
In our group's version of the DarkStryder Campaign: Shortly after her launch, the FarStar received a distress signal from the planet Kolatill. There was an Imperial Escort Carrier, the Kathol Protector, dumping TIE Bombers armed with chemical and conventional weapons. The Kathol Protector was accompanied by the Storm Bringer, a Lancer-Class Frigate, as protection. Only shortly prior to the attack on Kolatill, my character was introduced. Xan Derrycc (baronneutron.deviantart.com/ar…) had been on his way to rendezvous with the FarStar when he was attacked by this very same Imperial TaskForce. Commander Derrycc came to in the midst of the fight and headed to the bridge. He then took command and used his tactical knowledge to exploit the fact that neither Lancer's or Escort Carrier's have capital class weapons (this is important in the old West End Games SW RPG). He then ordered the ship in close to the Lancer to take advantage and to block its quad cannons from targeting her star-fighters. We then took pot shots at the Protector and used our X-wings and Y-Wings to lob proton torps at both and of course take on the TIEs. We were able to antagonize the escort carrier, and when she was close we blew up the Lancer Frigate and burst thru the explosion and laid into the escort carrier.
In the course of the fight, the shuttle carrying the Captain was killed, and Kayia Adrimertrum took command, and appointed Derrycc as her First Officer.

PFC Daru Vemin
by Jedi-Art-Trick
From New Republic front line field correspondent:  Private First Class Daru Vemin, SpecForce 2nd Regiment (Pathfinders), is seen here taking point with his Assault Team (a platoon sized Taskforce) from the Corvette FarStar.
Another character I created about 20 years ago for my gaming group's run of the DarkStryder Campaign.  I never liked how Star Wars and Star Trek made all aliens so cookie cutter and said "All _____ are this or that".  So, I felt somewhere in the universe was a Sullustan who wasn't the best pilot, who was physically stronger than the average, and a competent operator despite how funny his face looks. The observant may notice the Aliens influences here, we liked the Colonial Marines
