Digimon Ghost Game Analyzer, Episode 10: Game of Death
For those asking, I’m fine. It took me a while to recover, but it’s nothing I can’t handle.
Tumblr media
So, today’s episode is all about video games. What, is it going to tell us how dangerous video games are and how they corrupt your mind?
That doesn’t appear the case from what we’ve seen in the preview. Anyways, let’s see what this is all about.
Tumblr media
We start with a guy with a 20 win streak in some kind of fighting game, which actually reminds me a lot of Street Fighter.
Too bad Digimon aren’t in the same position as in our world, else we could’ve had a video game similar to Digimon Tamers: Battle Evolution, or for those who don’t know, Digimon Rumble Arena.
True. *tilts head* You’re only saying that because I’ve been using your character whenever I played the game, aren’t you?
*shrugs, smirking* Hey, I can’t say that I’m not honored that you chose me to beat up the opponents in the game. Just like in real life.
Right. *turns back* Moving on, this guy is then challenged by an unknown... player?
Tumblr media
It’s a Digimon. We both know that’s no video game character, but an actual Digimon. Although, I hadn’t seen a Digimon that can enter a video game, only Appmon.
I guess there is a first time for everything. I will also spoil the surprise here and call the Digimon Kinkakumon, but I will later go into more detail about her. For now, all you have to know is that Kinkakumon beats the guy in his own game and then Ginkakumon (I’ll explain later) literally absorbs him into the computer after asking him about his name.
Tumblr media
Admittedly, humans being absorbed into the computer isn’t anything new for Digimon, but this is a little disturbing.
Indeed, being a gamer means living on the edge. *grins*
*rolls eyes* So, what are the Tamers going to do about this?
Tumblr media
Well, first things first, Kotaro tells Hiro about a game called Fighter’s Kingdom, where if you get a win streak, a new character cuts in to fight.
Tumblr media
Although, looking at Kotaro’s expression, he has a different reason to see this mysterious character. *sighs*
Tumblr media
The two run into Kiyoshiro, who tells them to stop talking about the video game, considering the topic inappropriate. *eyes Kiyoshiro* I don’t think talking about a video game should be a problem.
Tumblr media
*smirks slyly* I think Kiyoshiro owes us an explanation, as Jellymon points out how he was totally hooked on the game.
Tumblr media
Quitting a video game after hearing some scary rumors is such a Kiyoshiro-thing to do. *shakes head and shrugs*
Now, before I continue, I think I know what the horror theme of this episode is.
*eyes Tenebrae* You mean, video games?
Well, yeah, but I’m specifically talking here about the Urban Legend Of Zelda-type of mysteries, like the MissingNo. glitch in Pokémon Red and Blue; as well as video game Creepypasta, like Sonic.EXE. It’s that kind of mystery/horror, where rumors fly about people finding a new area or characters that ends up in someone being hurt. Some, however, are just harmless fun and some aren’t even true, but you don’t know unless you investigate it by yourself.
It seems that you’re right.
Tumblr media
While Kotaro decides to play the game, Kiyoshiro, who is also a really good gamer, tells Hiro about another rumor he had heard.
Tumblr media
According to Kiyoshiro, those who encounter the new character, Kinkakumon, disappear one after one. That’s why he doesn’t want to touch the game again. I guess that’s a logical decision.
Tumblr media
Not to mention, the moment Kiyoshiro learned that Kotaro decided to play it, he immediately goes to him.
Tumblr media
Not a moment too late, as Kotaro has been targeted by Kinkakumon and is in the process of being digitized and absorbed. Hell, this episode immediately ups the stakes by having one of Hiro’s non-Tamer friends being harmed.
However, since it’s locked and Kiyoshiro has issues remembering the key number, Kotaro is asked by Kinkakumon and Ginkakumon what his name is, meaning they don’t have much time until he’s gone. So Gammamon opens the door instead...
Tumblr media
That’s an useful ability.
We also saw it before. Considering what Digimon are, it’s obvious they can interact with electronics in this manner.
Tumblr media
Anyways, just as they break inside, they find Kotaro being absorbed into the computer.
Tumblr media
Honestly, Hiro’s expression here shows just how horrifying this experience is for him, as he has to watch helplessly his best friend vanish because of a cursed game.
Tumblr media
Even Kiyoshiro freaks out, to the point of fainting.
‘Integer overflow’? What’s that supposed to mean?
I'm sure we'll get an explanation soon. In any case, Hiro calls Ruli so they can all investigate what had happened.
Tumblr media
We can see that this investigation is very personal for Hiro, considering his close friend had been targeted.
Tumblr media
He’s wants to know what exactly had happened.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, we have Gammamon and Jellymon messing with Kiyoshiro, who still seems to be passed out. Angoramon wonders what Gammamon what this integer overflow that Gammamon is repeating means, with Jellymon explaining that it’s when her Darling’s fear count reaches max capacity and overflows. Afterwards, something happens that Jellymon calls limit break. As she opens the Fighter’s Kingdom game, Kiyoshiro suddenly wakes up.
Tumblr media
Hah, he can easily use it as his personal alarm clock. *smirks*
Tumblr media
Kiyoshiro then quickly crawls under the blanket, apologizing and asking to be spared. Gammamon wonders if that’s the limit break Jellymon mentioned, but it isn’t.
Tumblr media
Is it just me or does Jellymon look disappointed that it failed?
They then get a message from Bokomon, who invites them to the library. He gives Gammamon some chocolate, observing him. Ruli wonders why he moved to a library close to the dorm, with Bakumon explaining how Bokomon already read all of the books there.
Tumblr media
Hiro then questions Bokomon about whether he knows what may have happened to Kotaro. Bokomon isn’t that knowledgeable about video games and Ruli’s friends/followers have no idea what’s going on, so Jellymon suggests they play the game to learn what is going on.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately for Kiyoshiro, this means that he has to be the one who’d play it. Kiyoshiro refuses (with Jellymon calling him her cowardly darling). Bakumon then realizes that the ones behind the disappearances may be the siblings Kinkakumon and Ginkakumon. Apparently, Bakumon loves computer bugs and he ran into them when he ate computer bugs from another video game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically, these siblings work as a team, where Kinkakumon defeats her opponents and Ginkakumon turns the opponents into liquor.
Ha, we actually had at least two episodes where an alcoholic beverage played a role in the episode. One was in Digimon Adventure, Episode 27: Vamdemon, the Castle of Darkness, where the Chosen Children got a Nanimon drunk in order to infiltrate Myotismon’s castle, as well as in Digimon Tamers, Episode 31: Friendship with Guardromon! "I'll fight too!", Tamer Hirokazu, where Orochimon forced a bunch of Gekomon to brew sake for him.
Angoramon mentions that he had heard the rumors, and that Ginkakumon’s gourd, the Beni-hisago sucks in everyone who answers its call, turning them into liquor. Basically, they’ll all become liquified.
Tumblr media
In short, they’re on a time limit. Not to mention, one has to wonder how many people were already liquified by Ginkakumon before the Tamers found out about it. Since there is no way for them to find the siblings in time, they realize that there is only one thing they can do now.
Tumblr media
Kiyoshiro is their last hope. *grins* I’m so looking forward to this.
Hiro, Gammamon, Kiyoshiro and Jellymon are back at Kiyoshiro’s room, with Kiyoshiro getting support from Hiro and Jellymon.
Tumblr media
While Jellymon loves to mess with her Tamer, she still has his back. I really like their relationship. As for Ruli, Angoramon, Bokomon and Bakumon, they’re watching a stream of the battle. As expected from the dorm leader, Kiyoshiro manages to win battle after battle, gaining Kinkakumon and Ginkakumon’s interest. Once he completes his 20 streak win, Kinkakumon appears, ready to challenge him.
To make things interesting, Jellymon herself enters the game, deciding to battle Kinkakumon with Kiyoshiro’s aid.
Tumblr media
Now, I’m excited to see how this battle is going to turn out! Also, Ginkakumon appears behind Kinkakumon, taking control over her.
I think we can now confirm that Digimon Tamers: Battle Evolution (also known as Digimon Rumble Arena) is canon as a video game in the Digimon anime. *grins*
Jellymon and Kinkakumon start trading blows and even though this is just a fighting game, Kinkakumon would have even in an actual Digimon battle the upper hand. After all, not only is Kinkakumon a Champion (in comparison to Jellymon being a Rookie), but she’s also a Virus, which has advantage over a Data Digimon like Jellymon.
Tumblr media
Still, it is not over until it’s over. Kiyoshiro strikes back, having used the first part of the battle to observe Kinkakumon’s moves and Jellymon manages to push back. However, Ginkakumon is prepared, expanding his controller (isn’t that cheating!?) and having Kinkakumon strike Jellymon with her kanabou. Ginkakumon then really goes into overdrive with the command inputs (wouldn’t be surprised if he entered the Konami Code at some point).
Tumblr media
Jellymon and Kiyoshiro fight back furiously, but it’s not enough.
They look to me like they’re evenly matched.
Tumblr media
Okay, maybe not, but Kinkakumon does vocalize what I have in mind whenever I’m fighting a strong opponent. Kinkakumon then attempts to grab Kiyoshiro, but he activates the AR Field, causing Kinkakumon to destroy his room. Ginkakumon also emerges and the battle continues, much to Kiyoshiro’s dismay.
Tumblr media
Dude, this is not the time to short-circuit!
Tumblr media
The siblings are disappointed by Kiyoshiro fainting, but Jellymon stands up to them, leaving Hiro and Gammamon/BetelGammamon (who does have a better chance due to being a Champion, as well a Vaccine to counter Ginkakumon’s Virus Attribute) to save the people trapped in Ginkakumon’s gourd (with Ruli and Angoramon flying to join them). Unfortunately for Jellymon, she is no match for Kinkakumon.
Jellymon attempts to wake Kiyoshiro up, even tearing up when he doesn’t answer.
Tumblr media
There is a lot more to Jellymon than she wants to show, isn’t it? She’s quite desperate here, aware that she won’t be able to win without Kiyoshiro’s aid, and even threatens him by telling him how she’ll throw his stuff away or tell everyone about the secret of his wrapped hand as Kinkakumon slowly approaches them.
Tumblr media
Finally, leaving the threats aside, she acknowledges that the reason why they managed to match Kinkakumon wasn’t because of their video game skills, but because they were a team. That’s the kind of message Digimon promotes and I love it!
Not to mention, in these kinds of situation, it is the Tamer who acknowledges that their strength comes from supporting their Digimon partner, so it is interesting to see Jellymon being the one who delivers this kind of speech.
Tumblr media
But, just as she reaches out for Kiyoshiro, Kinkakumon steps on her tentacle. Man, that has to hurt, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Jellymon was trying to reach out for her partner and Kinkakumon just stopped her, deciding to deliver the final strike.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, Jellymon isn’t the type to give up so easily and she manages to literally shock Kiyoshiro awake. As for Kiyoshiro...
Tumblr media
*shudders* Honestly, as much as Digimon Ghost Game likes to make fun of him, whenever Kiyoshiro decides to get serious, he is a man on a mission. I really admire him for that.
Tumblr media
Even Jellymon agrees. No wonder she had chosen him for her partner. This time, they are going unlock their true Max Level Limit Break!
Tumblr media
This columinates in a new Digivolution, introducing us to TeslaJellymon.
Tumblr media
May I add that they look really badass here. (✧ω✧)
TeslaJellymon easily avoids Kinkakumon’s attacks and taunts her back, and I’m laughing over here at her remarks.
Tumblr media
I think that you’d be more like TeslaJellymon in this battle. You have a passion for fighting, but you’re not afraid to mock your opponents.
Tumblr media
You should only have this kind of confidence if you know that you’re going to win, just like TeslaJellymon shows us.
Tumblr media
Kinkakumon didn’t even have a chance against the team of Kiyoshiro and TeslaJellymon.
Tumblr media
After defeating Kinkakumon, Ginkakumon is forced to release all the defeated players (but not without a complaint - dude, seriously! You’ve been using humans as your booze source!). Fortunately, everyone is fine, but you can see their clothing being damaged to an extent, showing that they had been in danger.
Tumblr media
*laughs alongside Tenebrae* Of course, in order to prevent Ginkakumon from causing trouble, Hiro promises to give him his father’s stash of booze. What show are we watching?!
Ginkakumon is fired up, but Kinkakumon refuses, noting she was only interested in the battles. *deadpan* Wow, what a supportive sibling.
Tumblr media
Jellymon is cool with being challenged again, but Kiyoshiro is not. Baby steps, Kiyoshiro, baby steps. We then get another speech from Angoramon (with Ruli wondering what he’s talking about) and the episode ends.
Tumblr media
For the episode’s highs, the best part was Kiyoshiro’s and Jellymon’s bond, but the battle was meh. If you ask me, it could’ve been a bit longer, especially the fight between Kinkakumon and TeslaJellymon.
I agree. It lacked a bit in animation, but seeing Kiyoshiro getting serious, having Jellymon Digivolve and even seeing Digimon in a fighting video game was pretty awesome.
*turns to the audience* So, what do you guys think? See ya next time!

I love your Digimon meta blog! It's really helped me appreciate the series more and get into it after Ghost Game! I know you focus more on Adventure and 02, but do you know any other blogs, Tumblr or otherwise who also do meta's on Digimon?
Thank you so much!
Hmm, the thing about Digimon meta is that a lot of it is Adventure-biased, not just because of the popularity of Adventure, but also because the Adventure universe is the one with the most lingering questions to address compared to others that are a bit more straightforward. (Believe it or not, even I would probably be covering more than just Adventure and 02 if I could come up with things to talk about, but unfortunately, I'm not actually that creative or smart and struggle to come up with good topics when a huge question isn't shoved in front of my face.) Sadly, we also lost a lot of meta bloggers in the Tumblr exodus some years ago, but off the top of my head I easily remember @analyzingadventure (if at least because the name is easy to remember!), and I've also seen @digisurvive's stuff on Survive floating around.
The thing is, I do know a lot of names around, but I keep forgetting who are the ones who actually specialize in meta and who only posts about that kind of thing occasionally...I'm sorry, I am a terrible excuse for a community member. Please reblog this post and promote yourself if you do meta!
For things outside Tumblr, I really like Data Ravel's Digital World Archive, which talks about the Digimon franchise as an overall multiverse as well as the history of the IP itself. In particular, I like the fact that he's one of the few people who can talk about things like lore contradictions and marketing/financial problems with an academic tone that doesn't feel remotely malicious, and in fact, he treats them like things that make the franchise even more interesting to analyze and think about. So he's probably the only person I can have faith will talk about things like the 02 media mix biting off more than it could chew or Tamers/Frontier's financial problems without sounding like he's attacking them or being condescending, and it really does feel like a true analysis blog rather than something that has to go into media criticism or debating what's better or worse writing. I really appreciate the fact that he treats everything like it has its own place and value, and I feel more people could stand to be that way.

Digimon Ghost Game Opening: Identifying every Digimon shadow
Ghost Game is one of my favorite Digimon seasons and I absolutely love the opening ; but never took the time to really analyse it... Until yesterday! While discussing who the next problem-Digimon-of-the-week might be, the lovely @grimsdeadb0nes and myself decided to go through the opening for clues- and ended up listing our best guesses for (almost) every shadowed Digimon who appears in it!
Now obviously this is all speculative and possibly over-analyzing the info we have, but hey, it was fun!
1. Vamdemon
Tumblr media
The shape of the eye as well as the cuffs and general shape of the arms makes me strongly think that this is Vamdemon. Plus, a Vamdemon has already showed up in the show so it makes sense to me!
2. MegaSeadramon or MetalSeadramon
Tumblr media
So, this is obviously someone from the Seadramon line- but not Seadramon themself, as indicated by the presence of a horn. MegaSeadramon fits the bill ; but the square snout makes me lean more towards MetalSeadramon.
3. Pinocchimon, Mushmon or Chamblemon, and (possibly) Mokumon
Tumblr media
In the first window we have a Pinocchimon ; it's more obvious in motion but he's got the little bobble on his hat and the wooden cross on his back.
Second window has either a Mushmon or Chamblemon (although the small size makes me lean towards Mushmon more), both of which have appeared in the show.
Finally we have what I'm guessing from the shape is a Mokumon (which I really hope I'm right about because I love Mokumons and I want to see more of them)
4. PicoDevimon & Floramon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A PicoDevimon's shadow flies by a window in which we can see what is most likely a Floramon.
(Bonus thought: Since the Mushmon and Floramon we've seen in Ghost Game so far were friendly, it's possible the Pinocchimon and Mokumon will also be friendly when they show up since they're all standing in the windows together)
5. LadyDevimon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm like... 75% Sure this is LadyDevimon. The face and, as a friend pointed out, what seems to be tattered wings really make it look like her.
6. Wizarmon (or Sorcerimon)
Tumblr media
The pointy-hat shadow is most likely either a Wizarmon or a Sorcerimon. Not sure what the second shadow is? It makes me think of fire, but FlaWizarmon's hat isn't pointy.
7. Archnemon
Tumblr media
Pretty obvious ; the spiderweb is a dead giveaway and the hand is a perfect match. The angle does make her look adorably tiny tho-
8. Pumpmon
Tumblr media
Also pretty obvious. Don't really have much to say about this one-
9. Lucemon
Tumblr media
Cheating a little bit since it's not a shadow, but hey. It's him. Be very afraid.
10. Piemon
Tumblr media
The scar is a dead-giveaway for Piemon. Plus, we've already seen one in the show.
11. Mugendramon
Tumblr media
Big guy at the window! The face seems to match perfectly.
12. Etemon
Tumblr media
And finally we have Etemon, which... Yeah I have nothing to say. It's the rockstar monkey. He's back.
Bonus: The Digimon being punted by Angoramon in the first opening
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No idea who those guys are but they've gotta be someone seeing how detailled the shadows are in shape.
And that about wraps it up!
Seeing as several of the identifiable Digimon in this opening have already popped up in the show, if my theories are correct this means we might be getting more episodes with MegaSeadramon/MetalSeadramon (my personnal pick for who the problem Digimon of episode 60 might be), Pinocchimon, Mokumon, LadyDevimon, Wizarmon/Sorcerimon, Lucemon, Mugendramon and Etemon!

Digimon Ghost Game #50 Review
Tumblr media
Once again, there isn’t a ton going on here. It’s still the kids mostly coasting by as they deal with another Digimon having a totally wrong idea about how they’re supposed to conduct themselves in the human world. And in the end, nothing happens, the characters don’t learn anything, and the Digimon faffs off never to be seen again. But even if it’s ultimately pointless, it approaches things differently. There’s no monster inflicting horrors on children, the kids don’t take forever to figure out there’s a Digimon involved, and there’s a state of awkward normalcy before things go wrong. It doesn’t even end with Angoramon spouting nonsense! While it only shakes up the formula a little, that’s enough to garner some appreciation.
Another positive is the way it gives us a new perspective on Digimon/human relationships. Pucchiemon’s down to befriend Riku instantly, and Riku’s on board when he sees the neat trick she has to offer. But that neat trick, helping him apologize his way out of mildly awkward situations, isn’t that valuable. So what we end up with is a de facto partnership based solely on friendship. Usually if it’s not forged by a higher calling (or at least some form of digivice), one or both members are maliciously capitalizing on the situation, as seen in Savers, Hunters, and here in Ghost Game. Even if Pucchiemon’s insistence on scoring acts of service is way off base, it’s a rare relationship that’s purely organic. Maybe that’s why Hiro and Kiyoshiro find it so off-putting, and why it’s destined to fail.
Once it does, it’s unfortunately the same old story. Meicrackmon’s adherence to equivalent exchange is physically impossible for Riku to keep up with, so she tries to make him physically capable… which makes her sound like a psychopath. Cue the good guys intervening, throwing their Digimon into a fight where they’re outleveled, making the adjustment and ultimately winning. Maybe if they hadn’t moved the Digi-Analyzer segment to the end of each episode they’d know how strong Meicrackmon actually is. They do eventually talk her off the ledge, but rather than introduce any change in continuity she decides she wants nothing to do with humans and storms off. It’s better this way, but it would have been fun to see her and Riku make up and maintain their friendship, if only to see that trainwreck continue in future episodes.

Why did I refollow the official Twitter when I know I just end up seeing GG spoilers
Anyways catching up, episodes 52 to 56!
52, Mysterious Lake!
There’s something about the whole kids really trying to hide the Digimon and trying to convince people they’re holograms to the Digimon just walking around visible to everyone and all the people buy that they’re holograms with ease... Like something about this transition makes me sad
(Is it just that the kids having to put in effort every episode would get old and we get it by now so they’re intentionally trying to just smooth that out for the sake of convenience, or is writing around that “plotpoint” an inconvenience to the writers that they just don’t want to deal with anymore?)
(IDK it doesn’t matter really) anyways Ruri is getting dragged into the lake wheee)
Tumblr media
He looks so sad when wet lmao
OH THE KAPPA BOSS IS VOICED BY HIROAKI HIRATA HELL YEAH
Man I miss the mid-episode analyzer bits, it’s more fun to get to know the Digimon during the episode rather than AFTER everything is said and done :(
Tumblr media
Moisturized once again
“The factory promised this wouldn’t happen again” oh honey, you sweet little thing, you naïve baby
Yeah a kinda mediocre episode
53, King of Knowledge
Wait is this the episode with all four of Koushirou’s VAs
Oh yeah this is the episode, obviously we got Tamura Mutsumi (teen Koushirou in tri.+Kizuna) as Hiro and Kobayashi Yumiko (Psi Koushirou) as Espimon, BUT we ALSO got Takahiro Sakurai (adult Koushirou in 02) as “god of knowledge” (I know who it and yes that’s fun but we’ll get there), as well as the OG Koushirou herself Tenjin Umi as one of the spirit
I love that the staff saw the chance to just bring the Koushirou Levels to the Absolute Max (in a Kiyoshiro episode none the less) and fucking took it, thats fucking funny and great
Kiyo honey you have a problem...
Man this episode is horrifying but in like, a real way...
“You’ve been cheating on me” LMAO JELLYMON
LMAO THE WAY SHE WAS ATTACKING THE FUCKING BOOK
ALRIGHT BA’ALMON LET’S GOOO
LMAO RURI GOING FOR STUPID TRIVIA
HELL YEAH ICK BA’ALMON’S ASS, BEAT HIM AT HIS OWN GAME
THE TWO WERE REAL GHOSTS
HOLY SHIT THAT WAS SO CREEPY
UHHH YEAH GOOD EPISODE
54, Second Sight
God I am not jelly of Hiro’s vibe check ability, whoever the fuck is possessing hito give him that ability pls stop
Okay but Hiro got horns? That’s fucking cool bro, just like, get rid of the migraines and the foresight and Hiro will become Extremely Popular when he’s older
Fujitsumon?! THEY’RE FINALLY GETTING ACKNOWLEDGED AS THEIR OWN LITTLE DIGIMON?! HOLY SHIT HELL YEAH
Gammamon’s so worried about Hiro!!
Tumblr media
Poor kiddo ;A;
I fucking love the set up of this episode, like this mess happened because of a Heated Gaming Moment and these two Octomon are absolute idiots. I fucking love this
Tumblr media
Look at that mofo, lil shit does not have a single care in the world lmao
Angoramon pwease just carry Hiro in your big soft arms this baby boy is in so much pain ;__;
YEAH KICK ESPIMON’S ASS
Where are the Octomon why aren’t they helping?! Same for Clockmon, dude was helping out like five minutes ago why’d he bail out?!
Tumblr media
OH JEEZ ESPIMON GOT LIKE COMPLETELY FUCKED THERE, GOD
Oh there we go the Octomon came out
Okay please take Hiro to rest, baby boy is so tired
This episode would’ve been pretty mediocre, but genuinely the Octomon part was so fucking funny it turned into a good episode
55, Bakeneko
Oh man the animation is so unsettling right off the beginning what the fuck
Gammamon likes cats?! TRULY THIS BABY BOY IS PERFECT
NOOO DON’T DO BODY HORROR WITH THE KITTIES I CAN’T I DON’T WANNA SEE THAT PWESE NOOOOOOOOOO
Tumblr media
SMOOTH
Man this episode has really nice animation
Oh, did Bastemon recognize Gammamon? OWO
So why are Ruri and co just not doing anything and are allowing this continue??
OH AIRDRAMON IS BACK
And Bastemon’s scheme as been busted!
I don’t like this animator (still) but the battle animation is still fun
OH SHIT EVEN AIRDRAMON IS CONTRIBUTING TO THIS BATTLE!
And all the meow meows have been freed of Bastemon’s control and they’re all happy lil meow meows ;w;
56, Impurity
Aaand here we go, the reason I’m up at 5 am catching up with GG rn, the thing Twitter spoiled
Aaand we got great animation again this episode, wheeeee
Like, damn the animation is good
“White is the only pure color” hilarious to hear that considdering the color palette of the MotW isn’t white on white lmao
You know you’d think that after like 50 weird incidents were Digimon were making people Do Weird Shit, you’d think the kids could figure out when a Digimon was up to some shit before it was too late
Oh lmao the kids aren’t even safe in the Digital Field due to the mannequins lmao
Ah yes, one of the two things Twitter spoiled
Tumblr media
Kuzuhamon (IN MIKO MODE TO BOOT!)
Boy she lookin’ purdy (also it’s so fun to see Miko Mode)
KUZUHAMON CAN SEE ALL, KUZUHAMON KNOWS YOUR SINS
Tumblr media
This episode is looking so fucking good like god the animation-- Toei really fucking loves Kuzuha/Sakuyamon huh (it’s what she deserves)
It’s honestly kind of funny how they casually decided to make Miko Mode just A Giant Woman just for funsies
Awe boo combat mode is like average size
Man Kuzuhamon is just whooping ass with absolute fucking ease
I need to pause for a second because I actually thought for a second they were doing fucking Matrix Evolution and I was about to lose my fucking mind but no no no, Hiro isn’t merging with Gammamon, Baby Boy is evolving on his own, oki, oki
Tumblr media
Okay. I’m going to try to be nice. Siriusmon looks cute and fine, there isn’t anything wrong with him
But god I did not need another Royal Knight-ass looking Digimon 😭 He looks like a bootleg Omegamon nnnooooooo I wish they just let him turn into a bigger dragon or something
LIKE SIRIUSMON INS’T A BAD DESIGN AND HE FITS THEMATICALLY AND ALL I JUST. I’M TIRED OF THE ROYAL KNIGHT-ESQUE DIGIMON I*M SORRY
Okay okay okay I need to let go and enjoy this dope ass battle animation ‘cause this fucking slaps
The one who sent you to this world? OWO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
Oh also BTW since Kuzhamon is a black variant does this mean she’s with Black Agumon and the other variants?? Probably not?? But also no one was there stalking Gammamon at the end of this episode despite his evolution
Yeah it was an alright episode, the animation is really what made it shine
Next episode preview~ OH WAS THAT FUCKING LILITHMON OH SHIT IT IS HER ISN’T IT, OH HELL YEAH????

Digimon Ghost Game, Episode 33
A day late because of monopiles, lol.
Ah yes, that well established part of ghost game, other Digimon from past episodes being around and doing things.
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel -/-Was just a freight train coming your way
Ohh that’s kinda creepy
Such a weak human, almost dying to an explosion to the face.
In this episode, the genius learns he’s neurodivergent.
This is a medicine I’ve been making to calm people down.  It makes they hyper and go into a coma, at the same time :)
Also you aren’t the right species for it, but I’m sure it’ll be fine.
My friend, why don’t you let me kill you?
By dead Digimon, do they mean eggs?
Ok, but why waiting on car?
He’s not dead yet
You’re a Digimon, just like everything else.
Digimon said Greek afterlife is real.
I’m certain you’ll be my friend once I kill you.
Is Jellymon the defibrator?
I don’t think the digivice V supports calling
And now Jellymon kills herself
So did Spiekmon take this medicine to get here or are they just doing vaguely shaman things
Isn’t the Styx supposed to have a ferryman?
Isn’t jellymon supposed to be acting more excited than normal?
So they are doing a Digimon analyzer segment now? Weird timing to start

Digimon Adventure 2020 Ep 5 Reaction
Annnnnd we’re off!  (This was the first exposition-heavy episode, so SPOILERS).
This was an interesting ep, because I think it showcased some of the things I love about this series, and some of the things I don’t like as much.
First, we have an opening scene at a mountain-top temple.  This is probably me being my silly, troll self, but...  It was hard to focus on this scene, because I kept singing the Exposition Song (warning: once you hear this song, you’ll be singing it during every exposition scene for the rest of your life, so... maybe proceed with caution).  It turns out that, once upon a time, there was a war that made heavy usage of words like “balance,” “darkness,” and “light,” which leads me to another dumb video that touches on the weaknesses of these kinds of words.  The partner digimon of the six older Adventure Chosen fought in this war, died, and were reborn.  Now the darkness is rising again, but the Powers that Be were...  I guess not reincarnated (???).  But the darkness was (?!?!?!).
Some other stuff of note from the projection-flashback:  Agumon and Piyomon only vaguely remember this war, which is odd because I kind of assumed that’s how Agumon knew Gabumon (“So, you were alive!”)?  So that theory was short-lived?  Also, it seems that Tailmon and Patamon are the Holy Digimon waiting on Cloud Island.  ALSO ALSO, it seems that jogress is the special kind of evolution that requires the help of Chosen Children in Adventure 2020, since the partner digimon were shown in their Ultimate forms in this (presumably) Chosen-free flashback.  (And honestly, this implies that relationships will be important in this series, since jogress traditionally requires it- but also, it’s not like Taichi and Yamato are BFFs at this point, so maybe not?  I’m just hoping for an indication that characterization will be prioritized in the future).
I like the concept that Chosen Children are needed for jogress, and not strictly needed for standard evolution.  In Adventure, the fact that it was so difficult for digimon to evolve on their own always begged the question of...  Where did all of these evolved enemies and allies come from?
Ah!  Another bit of cool info was that the Digital World and earth used to be separate...  Until the advent of the Internet.  Through the Internet (ie, the Network), humans bridged the two worlds...  Which is why issues in the Digital World leak into earth, currently in the form of a spreading blackout.  I know I’ve seen this concept in the Digimon video games, but I like it in action in Adventure 2020.  It’s much more straight-forward than the nebulous, hand-wavey “earth and the Digital World are connected!  Because- um- because humans...  Use... Data!” from Adventure.  Like, it was vaguely described, but not as clearly, and certainly not with a whole world that the animators show us and the story points to as a bridge.
(Although I guess I’m not clear on if the DW pre-dates the internet and existed independently of humans?  I assumed so, because it sounded like this war took place long ago, but who knows how time moves in this DW).
I also really enjoyed how Agumon, Piyomon, and Tentomon are clearly residents of the DW, and know a lot about it.  Sometimes, in Adventure, the partner digimon would introduce other digimon and offer tidbits about their usual behavior (especially Tentomon).  At some point, Gennai gave Koushiro a digimon analyzer tool, and that became the “digimon-introducer-exposition-bot.”  The idea that the digis actually live here and can offer meaningful information about the world (Sora, Dokugumon don’t normally work together like this!  This web isn’t normal!) adds a layer of realism and gives the digimon more agency.  Like... ah, yes, they did have a full life here before Taichi and co showed up.
The kids are also very smart and observant!  I like that a lot, but I am still waiting for them to feel... like... kids in wonderland.  They just don’t.  Honestly, they give the impression that they’ve done this before.  Less like Taichi during the first act of Digimon Adventure and more like Taichi in the final act... or maybe even in 02, when he’s there for support and is super chill and experienced.
AND TENTOMON FLYING KOUSHIRO AROUND IS THE CUTEST SHIT I’VE SEEN.  And Koushiro was so cute?  “Whamon, run away!  Tentomon, let me go and escape!”  AND LORD, I never noticed how buff Kabuterimon is?  You heard Kabuterimon is shredded.  You heard he has a six pack...  But he actually has a TWELVE PACK, yes TWELVE, I counted.  AND TENTOMON ALREADY LOVES HIM SO MUCH *gross crying*  AND THE END!  WITH KOUSHIRO SAYING, “I must have been taken here to meet you,” AND KABUTERIMON TROLLED HIM AND PRETENDED HE DIDN’T HEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m dead.  This is ghost Hidden, blogging from the beyond.
AND THE LITTLE PUMPKIN HOUSES FOR DIGIMON!  AND MIMI WATCHING OVER THEM!  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Okay, so basically, I think Adventure 2020 has already managed to give us an idea of life in the Digital World, and that the partner digimon actually...  Live there, and know about it, and have ideas about it, and have their own lives there.  I think this series has a good chance of handling the distinct worlds and how they interact much more clearly than Adventure and 02.  I love and appreciate that!
I’m still really waiting and longing for character development, though, and the exposition was...  Well, it came off as stock and made heavy use of coded words that really don’t mean anything.
NOW GIVE ME SOME MIMI!

ANIME RECOMMENDATIONS
In which I explain every anime I have listed on MAL with a score of 9 or 10
I listen to music while I shower, and when I get out, I always make a bet with myself on what the next song won’t be. If I lose the bet, that is, if the song I thought of plays, I force myself to do something I’ve been putting off. I offer no explanation as to why I do this, but I feel like nobody who knows me will be surprised to learn this. Anyway, Catch You Catch Me played tonight, so I’m going to start a short series of posts recommending anime that I liked enough at the time of watching to rate as a nine or ten on MAL.
For reference, I do use every point on a ten point scale. I’m not a “ten should be an unobtainable high” kind of person, nor a “everything defaults to ten and points are subtracted” type. I consider a five to be a completely average piece of media that I neither particularly liked or disliked. Examples of anime I rated as fives include Yu-Gi-Oh (Duel Monsters) and Digimon Adventure 02. To get a nine or a ten, a series really has to impress me in some capacity. Anyway, with all that out of the way, let’s look at the first few series (in alphabetical order).
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai
Genre: Drama, Supernatural(?) Episodes: 11 Rating: 9
Tumblr media
Years after the disappearance and presumed death of his childhood friend, a boy begins seeing her (somehow aged-up) ghost, leading him to reconnect with the group of friends they’d belonged to that have since drifted apart. It’s hard to say much that doesn’t dip into spoiler territory, other than... this series is designed to make you cry.
Aoi Sekai no Chuushin de
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Parody Episodes: 3 Rating: 9
Tumblr media
This series is literally a dramatization of the video game console wars of the early nineties, with Sega depicted as scrappy heroes and Nintendo as an evil empire. In the middle there, you can see characters based on Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, and Fantasy Zone. The Sonic character’s father, killed by the evil empire, was based on Alex Kidd. You can’t make this stuff up. This probably doesn’t deserve to be a nine, but I got every reference and was riding high after watching it. Great for Sega and/or Nintendo fans.
Azumanga Daioh
Genre: Slice of Life, Comedy Episodes: 26 Rating: 9
Tumblr media
The everyday adventures of a group of high school girls, including a ten-year-old genius, a slow-to-react exchange student from Kansai, and the very incarnation of a Cool Mature High School Girl who in reality is just shy and likes cats. Very cute, very funny, and if you’re reading this you already own the entire collection of the manga so there’s really no point in trying to recommend it.
Baby Steps
Genre: Shounen, Sports Episodes: 50 Rating: 9
Tumblr media
An obsessive note-taker becomes interested in tennis, and uses his superhuman studying abilities to analyze his way to the top. It’s hard to explain why this is so good if you’re not interested in individual sports, but check it out for an episode or three.
Bakuman
Genre: Shounen, Drama, Workplace Episodes: 75 Rating: 10
Tumblr media
A fictionalized portrayal of the careers of several well-known manga authors, focusing on a pair based on the creators of Death Note (who wrote Bakuman). While none of the depictions are even close to 1:1, you can tell where the inspiration for each character comes from, such as Niizuma Eiji being based on Eiichiro Oda. If you’re at all interested in the process behind creating manga, I can’t recommend this highly enough.

At this point anyone who is a Pokemon fan has seen screenshots and sprites from the leaked Pokemon Gold Beta released at Space World 97′... Thank you... Thank you so much... you gave us fans something incredibly special.
(if youre curious you can download it yourself here: https://tcrf.net/Proto:Pok%C3%A9mon_Gold_and_Silver)
Above is a screenshot of the title screen and all the sprites from that demo (in color). I figured I would take this time to go sprite by sprite and analyze them. I’m sure you’ve already watched at least 5 youtube videos and read 100 posts on this BUT here’s my take.
This generation of Pokemon was the second in the series. In the official release, they introduced a lot of pre and post evolutions to Pokemon we had already seen from Red and Blue but from what we’ve seen here it looks like they were ready to cap off a lot more Pokemon evolution lines. So without further adue lets get into Beta Pokemon Gold and Silver: the Missing Links.
(note: I wont mention Pokemon that are the same as their official release or close enough -- ALSO updates to theories with NOTEs)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First we have the grass starters. Whats interesting to note is the secondary evolution. At first this seemed weird but if you think about it, it’s as if the leaf on Chikorita’s head is mid bloom. Then the final evolution is the flower fully bloomed. Also to note is that the second evo could've been used for a future Floette? ALSO note how the beta art below the sprites looks more oddly shaped. Like more of a plant thing than a little creature. This makes the second evo feel a little more natural.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the fire starters, instead of Cyndaquil we have this fire bear looking creature. It’s looks as if it could burst into flames following the classic fire theme. Below is the beta art we saw years ago and now we get to see where it fits in!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we have the water starters which, just like the fire starters, we have our answer to yet another beta design. Interesting little dragon seals but kind of basic.
Tumblr media
Hoothoot is relatively the same only with different patterns on it’s body. As for the evolution, it’s completely different displaying a very sharper and sleeker design.
Tumblr media
Like I stated in the intro, this game was all about filling the pre or post evolutions of many Pokemon. This is our first example. It appears to be the pre evoluton to the Vulpix line.
Tumblr media
This has been speculated as the pre and post evo of the Tangela evo line which it very well could be. The pre having one eye showing which evolves into Tangela having 2 eyes. Then into the final evolution having no eyes but a mouth showing... but we will never officially know.
Tumblr media
Here we have a complete new Pokemon. You could say it resembles Mantine as it looks like a manta ray BUT there’s something special here. Its underside  shown in the first sprite is all light whilst it’s back is all black with an evil looking face. Could this have been some sort of dark/light type?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we have Quilfish’s and it’s evolution. Quilfish looks the same despite there being beta art out there (feature below the sprites) but it’s evolution is brand new. It seems to resemble some sort of goofy sea mine.
Tumblr media
Now we have another baby Pokemon. What i can only presume is the first look of the pre evo of Pikachu, Pichu. only here Pichu looks to be more of a cute little ball.
Tumblr media
Next on the baby train is the pre Cleffa which I’ll say looks a lot more alien which is great and relates more to the origins of the Pokemon coming from space.
Tumblr media
...Igglybuffs beta... kinda the same... just bubblier! yeay!
Tumblr media
This is clearly Quagsire BUT with no pre evo. Which seems to be another part of what the game was going to be. Either a pre evo a post evo or something new. I think when Gamefreak redesigned the game for release they got rid of a lot of the babies and added new evos to push the games forward.
Tumblr media
Another baby. What looks like a guppy Goldeen. a pre evo to Goldeen. Yet another of the many babies we are going to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The beta to Marill which was known at one point as Pikablu. which was also known earlier to at least me and my friends as Pikapink. This is another example beta Pokemon that had never seen the light of day, now getting its time to shine. Below the sprite is that beta art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are original new Pokemon. It looks like a small fish that evolves into an anchor shark but just like so many Pokemon when evolved a certain way it could instead of evolving into the anchor shark, evolves into a deep sea eel type. Before the drop of this Gold beta a few early design sprites surfaced. One being the black and white image below the sprites. You can see Game freak was really working on combining an anchor and a shark.
NOTE: It doesn’t look like the deep sea eel is apart of this evolution but still cool.
Tumblr media
This is interesting. It looks as though this could be a pre evo to Paras. It looks like a larva breaking out of a mushroom. The idea being that before Paras gets taken over by a mushroom it actually emerges from one in the first place... and the circle of life is complete! Babies!
Tumblr media
This is the Spinarak line only with new patterns on the backs of these spider Pokemon. Also featuring new positions.
Tumblr media
I could be wrong here... BUT I heard Ditto was supposed to have an evolution. This could be the second stage in Ditto where not only would it be able to transform, mimicking other Pokemon, but it would also maintain it’s aggressive attributes and aggressive demeanor.
NOTE: Apparently you need a metal coat or metal item to evolve Ditto.
Tumblr media
This seems to be an original Pokemon... BUT... Possibly a pre evo to Doduo? It resembles baby birds in a nest with feet which would make sense to Doduo and Dodrio. The body is only hidden by then “nest”
Tumblr media
...just Sunflora... but odd... no pre evo. Maybe Game freak was saving all the 2nd round babies for the 3rd generation of Pokemon?
Tumblr media
This is great because we get to see Donphan and ALSO it’s pre evo in a new baby form. A softer more bubbly form.
Tumblr media
Here we have an original Pokemon that looks like a ghost type but could possibly be a branch off evo of Gastly? Where instead of moving on to haunter it becomes a duel ghost Pokemon? Maybe? who knows...
NOTE: SOOOO this is crazy. I was totally wrong... This thing evolves into Giraffarig! HA! That’s so cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Giraffarig only in this beta version we see how it’s back end wasn't a strange tail creature but more like the darker version of it’s original head. Dark Pokemon started in gold so maybe this was another half dark type Pokemon?
Tumblr media
Next up is most likely the pre evo to Meowth. it’s interesting that it looks like it’s eyes are closed but a third eye where the coin would be is open. There are also 3 coins or bubbles or eyes? above it. Perhaps it was little psychic kitten?
Tumblr media
More originals are these cat like Pokemon with little bells on thier tails. They also have a very dark tone. Could this be an alternate to Meowth’s evo line? The dark side?
NOTE: Doesn’t look like this is a Meowth evo...
Tumblr media
Polioad was an alternate evo to Poliwrath and we can see here the beta version of what it became. Not as friendly this time around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another interesting thing. It seems as if Lediba didn’t have an evolution but maybe an alternate version? Perhaps Gamefreak was leaning into the dark/light versions more than we thought and these were the 2 types versions?
Tumblr media
Like Vulpix’s baby evo, it looks as if this could be a ponyta baby. Dawwww...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This surprised me the most. We finally get to see the spiral Shelder. The version of Shelder we see when it attaches to a slowpokes tail evolving it into a slowbro as seen above... only now... we get to capture just the mean ol’ shell!
NOTE: This is rather interesting... Apparently this isn’t a spiral Shelder BUT Slowking’s Shell/Crown... hmmm...
Tumblr media
This confused me at first but thinking about it... this is a baby... a little baby Grimer. People seem to think that it has an open mouth with a tooth but I think it’s a little nubby nose and the white is the shine.
Tumblr media
This is one of the most interesting of the reveals. Remoraid and Octillery were always supposed to be shaped after weaponry, a gun and a tank... welp... here is your proof! The hand gun Remoraid and the tank Octilery. It’s very clear with these sprites. You can see where the bullets would be and the trigger fin on Remeraid. On Octillery you can see it’s tentacles curled up like tank treads and it’s head looks more like the top latch and cannon of a tank.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the beta Tyrogue and Hitmontop. In my opinion you can really see a lot more of the relation in Tyrogue to Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan. The pre evo looks like a little fighter in a helmet and gloves, like a basic fighter starting training. As far as Hitmontop’s beta goes it looks a little bizarre... probably for the best they toned it down a bit.
Tumblr media
Following along side the rest of the babies... here we have puppy Growlithe! I can see why they ditched some of these though. They are pretty basic and unless the babies had some new abilities I agree they were probably not necessary BUT adorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we have the beta forms of Hoppip evo line. They’re close to the final version but remind me more of how Digimon were designed.
Tumblr media
I’m not certain but I think this is the pre evo to the mr. mime evolution line. A little clown egg :)
Tumblr media
Following the baby lines we have the pre evo to jinx...
Tumblr media
The beta of Electabuzz... which looks much different...
Tumblr media
Magby... who looks a little different.
Tumblr media
I’m not quite sure what this is supposed to be but following in line with all the branch off evoltutions I’d have to say this might be if Weepinbell didn’t evolve into Victreebel... but this? I don’t really know but it totally looks like a weird Bellsprout.
NOTE: Apparently this evolves from Weepinbell with Poison Stone!
Tumblr media
Here’s a brand new original Pokemon. Possibly a water/fire type? It looks like a seal that balances a fireball on it’s nose.
Tumblr media
Delibird looking a lot more like Santa!
Tumblr media
I don’t know if this was supposed to be a different Pikachu but it defiantly looks like an electric mouse Pokemon.
Tumblr media
This is one of the more interesting pokemon designs. It looks like the evoluton of Farfetch'd possibly holding a different plant instead of a leek. Or possibly the leek has become part of Farfetch'd? Interesting.
NOTE: Confirmed!
Tumblr media
This is a strange new design. It resembles a voodoo doll Pokemon that evolves into some sort of japanese zombie Pokemon. Can’t wait for the fan art of this guy!
Tumblr media
This seems like a new take on Mercorw. Notice there’s no secondary evo along with it’s new design. This just goes along with the idea of pre post or new singular...
Tumblr media
I’m a little torn on this. It’s either a pre or post evo of Chansey. It’s size makes me think pre but the double egg sack makes me think post...
NOTE: Turns out this is the EVOLVED for of Chansey. Pretty cool.
Tumblr media
This is an early Scizzor design. It resembles more of Scyther which i think is great. It also seems to look like it’s claws have eyes on them. I think I like this more than the original design
Tumblr media
This has to be Pinsor’s early evo. I don’t know if it has no eyes or that’s a small mask on its face? Either way it’s nice to see the early design of Heracross.
Tumblr media
Here’s another GREAT original. It looks like a creature wearing another creatures fur which is fantastic! It’s a great design and i’d love to see more of this character.
Tumblr media
This is just... bizarre... a toy orb lion? I dunno but i like it!
NOTE: Another WOW moment... this evolves from Porygon with Up-Grade. Makes sense. Upgrading a digital monster to look more “real” I guess. That’s pretty cool.
Tumblr media
This has to be an evolution of either Lickitung or a Slowbro somehow. Clearly There’s a huge tongue but the little hat and odd shell hat design makes me think Slowbro... maybe a new shell leads Slowpoke to this form?
NOTE: So it’s defiantly Lickitung’s evo at level 32
Tumblr media
I think this is an early Kingdra design. It seems to resembles more of a genuine dragon which is a nice touch.
Tumblr media
These are beta designs of the legendary beasts... These are weirdly fantastic like old anime creatures. Not much to say here. Just look at them! Sharp Sassy and Sappy.
Tumblr media
I think this Pokemon was replaced by Lugia but more of a small Mew type. Instead of 2 large beasts we have the Mew/Mewtwo dynamic. Or maybe a Mew evolution?...
NOTE: I was very wrong here lol. this is just an early Sneasel design. Makes sense.
Tumblr media
This seems to look like Aipom. The monkey with a hand tail but a very early form... I don’t know why it would be so late into the Pokedex though. Is it a legendary?
Tumblr media
...and finally we have the Leafeon beta... it’s different in that its arms and legs look like roots and the body looks like wood resembling a more earth like form. Perhaps this being the last Pokemon means this wouldv’e been a promo give away for a special eevee event? We’ll never know!

Digimon Ghost Game Analyzer, Episode 11: Kamaitachi
Let’s see, Kamaitachi... According to the lore, Kamaitachi is a Japanese yokai often told about in the Kōshin'etsu region and can also refer to the strange events that this creature causes. They appear riding on dust devils and they cut people using the nails on both their hands that are like sickles. One would receive a sharp, painless wound.
Tumblr media
Only issue is, we are aware that the troublemaker in this episode isn’t a yokai, but a Digimon. So, let’s see who is the Digital Monster that decided to mess with humans this time.
Tumblr media
Our episode starts with a couple trying to get home when they suddenly hear a strange voice. Suddenly, a wind picks up, with the street lamps breaking and leaving them in the dark. Suddenly, something flies past them, spinning like a Beyblade.
Tumblr media
That’s Reppamon, also known as a kamaitachi-like Digimon...
*interrupts* They found a Digimon who really fits the title.
...albeit why is he attacking them, we don’t know.
Tumblr media
Still, the couple has every right to freak out after seeing something like that in the dark in front of them.
Reppamon also seems to have beef with someone. He still leaves the two alone. *glances at Tenebrae* Do you want to explain what is going on?
*waves Impmon off* Later. We still need to go through the set up first.
Tumblr media
The scene then cuts to Angoramon, who is about to leave Ruli’s house without Ruli.
You’re not looking suspicious there at all, pal.
Tumblr media
Ruli herself looks rather worried. Did something happen between the two?
Tumblr media
Well, it looks like we’ll be waiting for the answer, as we cut then to Ruli and Angoramon taking pictures of flowers with an old camera. Following the latest trend, Ruli hopes that this is what she was searching for, when Angoramon suddenly hears something.
Tumblr media
Just then, the wind picks up and the temperature drops, with the sign above them being cut through and almost falling on Ruli hadn’t Angoramon saved her. A shop keeper asks her whether she’s fine and tells her about the strong winds and blackouts.
Tumblr media
Angoramon seems to be occupied by something, not even noticing Ruli leaving until she calls for him. She wonders if there is something bothering him, but when he denies it, she gets annoyed.
Tumblr media
It seems that Angoramon leaving without telling her anything has been going on for a while and it annoys Ruli.
Tumblr media
Angoramon then tries to shift the topic to the photos, but Ruli leaves, still annoyed. *ears droop* I’m not sure how to tell you Angoramon, but unless you tell her what’s going on, she’ll remain angry at you.
Admittedly, Angoramon is allowed to keep secrets as long as they don’t harm anyone, so Ruli is acting a little bratty here. I assume that she’s used to them sharing everything, so seeing Angoramon doing his own thing without her pissed her off. She even notes how she doesn’t remember the last time she was alone after getting a message from her friend Aoi.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Jellymon pesters Kiyoshiro to buy her a camera, while he is off in video game land. I guess after their victory in the previous episode, Kiyoshiro grew more confident... Ouch!
Tumblr media
Yikes, that looks painful!
Tumblr media
I guess the rule here is that if Jellymon wants something, she will get it even if she has to turn her partner into a pretzel.
*chuckles*
Tumblr media
As for Ruli and Angoramon, she’s meeting up with her friends and asks Angoramon where he is off to. He just tells her that he’ll be out too, with Ruli replying how he’s acting weird and leaving. Honestly, maybe they should talk it out.
*places hands behind his head* Well, Angoramon is being quite secretive, so that will be hard to do. Besides, I don’t tell you about the places I go to when you’re not around.
I don’t think we can compare our relationship to theirs. After all, I’m fine with wherever you decide to go as long as you don’t cause trouble. I guess we’ll have to see what exactly is going on before we can judge any of them.
Tumblr media
Ruli tells Hiro about what had happened, with Hiro suggesting that she tails Angoramon if talking didn’t work, but Ruli notes that this wasn’t what she meant.
Tumblr media
I will also take a moment of appreciation for the cute Gammamon and Bokomon bonding.  (≧◡≦) ♡
Tumblr media
Hiro appears to be less interested in what is Angoramon doing and more in the mysterious gust they had encountered. I guess that his suspicious that it might be another Digimon, since most incident had been Digimon-related.
Tumblr media
Awww, cute! Hiro helps clean Gammamon up, just like an older sibling! ^-^
*exasperated* Man, you really get easily distracted by cute stuff on screen. Could we just focus back on the plot?
Tumblr media
Thank you, Bokomon-sensei! He questions Ruli about whether she is uneasy being by herself. She pouts, telling him she’s fine, but she wants to know why Angoramon isn’t telling her anything.
Tumblr media
Bokomon tells her that Angoramon probably has a good reason for keeping secrets, which is quite a logical response. Basically, she just needs to trust her partner and maybe she’ll learn later on what it is. After all, it is possible that Angoramon needs some time before he can tell her the truth or was even sworn to secrecy.
Tumblr media
Ruli then leaves with her friends, leaving Hiro wondering why he was called here. *smirks* I dunno, maybe she just needed someone she could vent to.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Angoramon, we also finally learn what he has been up to. He’s hanging out with other Digimon at some kind of hideout. He asks them about what is going on with that strange wind that does damage to everything. Floramon then gets him tea, with Angoramon asking for lemon.
Tumblr media
Ask and ye shall receive! *laughs*
Tumblr media
When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. However, Angoramon decides to skip on the mix of lemon juice and saliva.
Tumblr media
We’re back with Ruli at the bamboo forest, which she’s taking photos of, noting how the place is a bit scary. She hears someone yelling to stop and how they’ll kill them. The wind picks up, breaking all of the lamps and leaving Ruli in the dark.
Tumblr media
It gets really cold, with Ruli being really unnerved. Reppamon then slices through the whole place, with Ruli managing to take a photo of him.
Tumblr media
It kind of reminds me of that video game where you take photos of ghosts in order to defeat them... Fatal Frame, wasn’t it? In any case, Reppamon, or rather, Reppamon’s tail attacks her, slicing her camera in two.
Tumblr media
Had he gotten just a bit closer, Ruli too would’ve been sliced in half. Unfortunately, the danger isn’t over yet, as Reppamon slices through the bamboo, which falls on Ruli, but he then saves her by knocking the bamboo away. Reppamon then tells her to leave, being surprised to learn that Ruli knows about Digimon. Ruli questions him about the recent wind damage, with Reppamon’s tail answering.
Tumblr media
Dude, you just attacked her. Have a 100 yen coin and buy yourself a hint.
Tumblr media
There we go!
Tumblr media
Man, Reppamon looks really helpless here. His tail took complete control over his body.
Tumblr media
Ruli, get out of there!
Unfortunately for us, the scene cuts to Angoramon learning more about the mysterious wind, before going to search for Ruli. He gets almost blown away by a gust of wind and rushes towards it. Ruli meanwhile calls Hiro and Kiyoshiro to help her. While Hiro and Gammamon are on their way, Kiyoshiro and Jellymon...
Tumblr media
Kiyoshiro, have you ever thought that this might be an emergency?
Even Ruli agrees that he’s an idiot. As for Hiro, Gammamon suggest that they fly over. Hiro is a bit hesitant, but agrees, with KausGammamon flying them to the park.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Ruli has to deal with Reppamon and his tail blade bickering. While Reppamon refuses to attack anyone, the tail blade wants to cut through everything.
Tumblr media
Man, I think I’d lose my temper if my tail did this to me. Reppamon also gets furious, declaring how he’ll cut it off.
Tumblr media
I don’t even know how much this is going to help him. The tail is part of his body and it appears that Reppamon is willing to go down alongside his tail. Ruli, meanwhile, is left in the middle of this mess.
Tumblr media
Ruli, you’re not the one who should talk. You and Angoramon refuse to talk as well. Fortunately for her, before the tail could slice her in half, Angoramon saves her. He points out how, since a peaceful resolution isn’t possible, he’ll have to fight Reppamon.
Tumblr media
Angoramon mentions how they should consider each other’s feelings if they want to stop bickering, and while this is good advice, the parallel between him and Ruli and Reppamon and his tail feels kind of hammered here.
Yeah, it does. Ruli decides to talk to them, which Reppamon and the tail refuse. So, let’s go back to the previous plan - some good old violence.
Tumblr media
This fight is way better than the previous one, being quite fluid and having Angoramon using bamboo sticks to deal with Reppamon. However, Reppamon is too fast for him, not to mention a Champion (both are Vaccine Attribute, so they are equal in that part at least). Fortunately, Hiro and KausGammamon appear, making giving them the advantage, especially since KausGammamon is not only a Champion, but also a Data Attribute Digimon.
Tumblr media
The battle continues, with Angoramon and KausGammamon beating Reppamon up easily and imprison him between bamboo sticks.
Tumblr media
Not bad! Nice use of the environment!
Tumblr media
Ruli then questions them what they really want to do, with Reppamon admitting how he doesn’t want to hurt anyone, and while he doesn’t want to cut off his tail, he doesn’t know what to do with it. As for the tail, Ruli has already figured out that it just wants to show off how sharp it is and suggest both find a path they can agree with.
Tumblr media
While Reppamon and his tail note that this is impossible, Angoramon has an idea, inviting them to the gathering of Digimon that swap information. Apparently, they need someone to slice the lemons.
Tumblr media
*grins* Even if it does sound stupid, it is an interesting proposition. Imagine yourself being a knife and you want to show off how sharp you are. So, do you go hurting people by stabbing them or do you act as a tool in creating something special?
*glances at Impmon* Wow, that’s a really nice thought, especially coming from you.
*shrugs* I’m just stating the situation how it is. *grins* When Reppamon notes how it won’t work, Ruli points out how they won’t know unless they try and actually talk to each other and learn to respect each other.
Tumblr media
We then cut to Angoramon and Ruli looking at the photos, with Ruli feeling that this is not what she was searching for an apologizing for annoying him and admitting how he doesn’t have to share everything with her. Angoramon also apologizes for hiding the gathering from her, as the rule is that it needs to be kept secret from humans.
Tumblr media
Ruli promises to be more considerate of his feelings, with Angoramon hugging her back and noting how, as long as they see eye-to-eye and talk, they will be able to see the issue on the other side.
Tumblr media
I gotta say, Angoramon and Ruli are right about respecting each other, but the conflict does feel a bit forced. Has Ruli ever experienced someone keeping secrets from her?
Honestly, I have no idea. Also, I feel that Angoramon was right about keeping the gathering a secret, since he’s just following the rules, but he probably could’ve told Ruli that it was something he couldn’t share. On the other hand, Ruli notes how she doesn’t remember the last time she was alone, so it is also possible that Ruli felt left out and just wanted to hang out with Angoramon.
*crosses arms* Rest assured, the problem had been resolved and the two promised to communicate better in the future.
Yeah... *turns to the audience* Anyways, see ya next time!

What are your thoughts on Ghost Game’s first episode, if you’ve had the chance to watch it?
(Also, I really enjoy your blog! Thank you for all the good content.)
Thank you so much! I'm glad if it can be interesting and helpful!
I really liked it! I have to hold back on my temptation to try and unpack everything about it the way I normally would because we literally have only one episode and it's probably not a good idea to extrapolate so much depending on so little, but I think it set a good tone and made clear that it has an obvious direction it wants to go in. There's already a lot you can analyze from the first episode alone, which is really impressive, and (speaking as a 02 lover) I really like it when there are a ton of details and hidden flavor things that actually carry a lot of interesting implications, to the point you can rewatch it several times to dig more out of it. Hiro is already shaping up to be quite unique as a Digimon protagonist, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with him. Gammamon might have set a new bar for Digimon cuteness in this franchise, but from what I'm hearing from others this seems to hardly be an uncommon opinion ^^;;

Sonic Cyber Revolution Analyzer: The Metal Irregular Arc
Tumblr media
Sonic and his friends learn that an Irregular ARNav had been terrorizing Neos City and decide to stop him. During their investigation, they end up not only confronting the Irregular, but Sonic also fights against Metal Sonic, whose sole desire is to destroy his counterpart.
Chapters
Entry 0: Ready, Set, GO!
Entry 1: Team Up
Entry 2: Showdown At Eden
Entry 3: The Awakening
Neos City, the center of Starpoint Area, was determined to be one of the most technologically advanced cities known to mankind. Having made incredible breakthroughs in fields such as robotics, computer programming and even genetics, its main focus, however, was on the development of augmented reality.
The story of Sonic Cyber Revolution kicks off with a prologue, which explains the setting (something I went into depth in the previous post) before moving straight to the introduction of the main character, Sonic the Hedgehog.
Let's speed up! Sonic grinned as he ran even faster, the wind rushing in his ears. It was late at night and he had decided to go stretch his legs. As much as he liked to spend his days having fun with his friends, he was restless, feeling the need to just run around carefree and test his limits, especially since no one could keep up with him when it came to speed.
The story has basically started in medias res, with Sonic being in a familiar environment (how and why he found himself here will be explained later), having fun while speeding around. Unknown to him, he is observed by someone:
Quickly deciding on his next move, he leapt of the building and sped down it and towards the street, never noticing a red-eyed figure observing him from above, hovering in the sky. This figure, whose silhouette strangely resembled Sonic, remained silent as it observed the latter leaving, its eyes trained on the streak of blue light in the distance as it processed the information it had received.
'TARGET IDENTIFIED: Sonic the Hedgehog (Irregular ARNav).'
The figure's red eyes gleamed in the darkness.
'OBJECTIVE ACQUIRED: Terminate Sonic!'
That someone is none other than Metal Sonic, who wants nothing more but eliminate his counterpart.
Not only does the prologue mark the debut of both Sonic and Metal Sonic, but Metal Sonic also has the honor of being this Arc’s main villain. The beginning of the story has been heavily inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, commonly known as the Sonic OVA, focusing on Sonic and Metal Sonic’s rivalry, which will last through the whole story.
The story proper starts with the introduction of Lucas Kinomoto, Sonic’s partner, who discovers the hedgehog sleeping on the couch after he ran around the whole night. Considering how the story had been inspired by MegaMan Battle Network/Rockman.EXE, having humans play an important role in the story was a no-brainer. Note that not all of the Sonic characters will be partnered up with a human. Were the human character a must? Given the story direction, yes. However, I made it a goal to give the Sonic characters more of a spotlight than a humans, or at least have everything balanced out.
Concerning the parallels, if Sonic is the MegaMan.EXE/Rockman.EXE of this story, Lucas takes on the role of Lan Hikari/Netto Hikari. However, the inspiration for Lucas’ character has been drawn from Hiro Amanokawa (Digimon Ghost Game) and Haru Shinkai (Digimon Universe Appli Monsters). He even wears a pair of goggles, indicating his status as the leader of his team (something that is a tradition in the Digimon franchise).
''Good morning, Sonic!'' Lucas greeted him, causing the latter to open his eyes. ''What were you doing on the couch?''
''Oh, I woke up earlier this morning and then fell asleep on the couch,'' Sonic replied casually, giving Lucas an innocent grin. He suddenly vanished, reappearing instantly with a plate in his hands. ''So, when is breakfast going to be?''
Lucas crossed his arms, tilting his head slightly, obviously not buying the excuse, ''Are you sure that you weren't running around the city last night?''
''Uh, I… may have?'' Sonic said, giving his partner a sheepish look, aware that he was caught. He then added in a more relaxed and confident tone, ''But, you don't have to worry. Nothing had happened and besides, I always have my AR Visor on. Trust me, no one is ever going to know that I'm not a regular ARNav. Everything's totally fine.''
Lucas serves as a foil to Sonic personality wise, as Sonic is free-spirited, impulsive and always on the search for the next adventure, wanting to live in the moment; while Lucas is reserved, preferring to stay at home and is usually the one to worry and rationalize. So, how come these two became trusted partners when they’re complete opposites? It is something that will be explored later on.
These two hear a report on the news relayed by a recurring character, the news reporter Midorikawa Tobikomi and her frog-like ARNav partner Kero, who are based on Ribitta/Kero Midorikawa and ToadMan.EXE (MegaMan Battle Network).
''According to official reports, an Irregular ARNav had launched an attack on Cosmo Bridge, absorbing the BioEnergy of the pedestrians and releasing an explosive blast that damaged part of the bridge. At least five people are heavily injured and two are in a comatose state. The police is working with the Irregular Hunters to try and find the culprit.''
Lucas and Sonic exchanged glances, with Sonic quickly adding in a defensive tone, ''I swear, I had nothing to do with this.''
''Don't worry, I know you wouldn't do anything like this,'' Lucas assured him, returning back to the kitchen while the report continued. ''However, that doesn't mean that I'm not concerned. Aside from the fact that there is an aggressive Irregular on the loose, I'm sure that Irregular Hunters will start checking on every ARNav they come across.''
''Okay, first of all, I have faith in the AR Visor Tails had programmed and I'm sure the Hunters won't recognize me as an Irregular. Second, maybe someone had seen what the Irregular actually looks like, so they'll know whom to actually search for,'' Sonic noted, adding eagerly, ''You know what, I think we should go investigate this.''
''I don't disagree with you, but that doesn't mean that I don't worry,'' Lucas replied, tipping the sausages into Sonic's plate.
''That's fine,'' Sonic replied as he sat down. He understood well that Lucas wasn't really the most adventurous type of person, preferring to stay at home and read a book or play video games. Despite that he was still willing to go along with whatever crazy plan Sonic had. Admittedly, those plans usually consisted of getting getting into trouble and then improvise on the fly, but Lucas usually took them in stride. If a stranger observed them, they would probably wonder how these two could even get along due to their differences.
Through the report some of the SCR lore is explained, mainly regarding just how dangerous Irregular ARNavs are and posing the question to why Sonic, despite being an Irregular, isn’t as aggressive as others. This is actually an important lore point, especially for the later part of the story when the actual origins of the Irregulars are explored.
There is also mention of a device called AR Visor. The AR Visor is typically a type of eyewear, like goggles or sunglasses, that humans use to interact with the AR Fields scattered across Neos City (which explains why Lucas is wearing a pair of goggles around his neck). It also acts as a modern day smartphone, allowing users to make phone calls, send E-Mails, store data, take photos and videos, access the Internet wirelessly, etc.
ARNavs don’t need an AR Visor to interact with AR Fields due to being created for that task, yet Sonic wears an AR Visor (specifically, one in the form of the sunglasses from Sonic Riders). This AR Visor functions the same way as a normal one would, with the addition of having a program that hides Sonic’s very nature of an Irregular from the scanners used by Irregular Hunters. While he lacks the trademark aggressiveness most Irregulars have, the fact that he is an Irregular still makes him a target for the Hunters.
Lastly, one point that had been brought up is the difference between a normal ARNav and an Irregular. ARNavs are made out of pure data, being an artificial intelligence created in such way to be able to interact with the environment as long as they’re within an AR Field. They don’t need to sleep or eat, and their purpose is to serve as companions to humans, being even treated as citizens in Neos City due to their importance in society. They also cannot survive outside AR Fields for a long time else they are deleted from existence. It should be noted that ALL ARNavs have the form of anthropomorphic animals due to a specific rule that forbids the creation of human-like ARNavs.
As for Irregulars, their very nature and origins considered a mystery in-universe. Nobody knows how they came to be and the government of Starpoint Area directly forbids any research on them. Any Irregular that is seen needs to be detained and disposed off before they can do more damage. They are virtually indistinguishable from regular ARNavs, with the only way to recognize one being by using a special scanner. Irregulars are also well-known to be hyper aggressive, having an unnerving hunger for BioEnergy, which is the life force of a human, and the ability to absorb it to empower themselves. In some cases, that hunger borders on pure addiction.
Lucas’ main goal in SCR is to learn more about Irregulars, as through his interactions with Sonic, he learned that Irregulars can stay outside AR Fields indefinitely, that they need to sleep and eat, and that in general, they appear to be more biological with digital powers. Also, Sonic has no clue where he came from or how he came to be, having just awoken one day and deciding to go on an adventure until he arrived in Neos City.
Tumblr media
With their minds set on investigating the recent Irregular attack, Sonic and Lucas decide to gather half of the current team by going to the Taylor Workshop, where they meet up with Lucas’ childhood friend, Warren Taylor, and Sonic’s little brother, Miles “Tails” Prower.
''Oh, we've been working on a new variation of the laser gun,'' Warren replied.
''We wanted it to have a greater damage output while consuming less energy,'' Tails added, holding the laser gun. ''We were just about to test it.'' He then pointed the laser gun at the far side of the workshop, where a bag of sand with a painted-on target was hanging. He then fired, smiling when he saw the bag exploding, only for his eyes to widen when the laser also blasted away the wooden wall behind it. ''Uh, oh…''
''I… I think we need to do a few more calibrations,'' Warren said, staring at the smoking hole in the wall, stunned by what had happened. Tails slowly turned to his partner, a look of guilt on his expression.
''I'm so, so sorry, I didn't mean for this to happen!'' he apologized. After all, this workshop was Warren's, who inherited it from his grandfather after the latter had passed away.
Both Warren and Tails share a love for engineering. While Tails was always a genius, Warren had worked hard alongside his deceased grandfather, Max Taylor, a renowned inventor. His character was based on Lan’s grandfather, Tadashi Hikari.
Warren wants to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, but most of his inventions were failures, which was a huge blow to his self-confidence. That is until Warren met Tails, who wanted to help him fix and improve his inventions, with Warren inviting him to stay. Tails, who by that point had been suffering from low self-esteem due to being constantly called a freak by other ARNavs, joyfully accepts, happy that he found a home where he is appreciated. Again, the details of their meeting will be explored later on.
Also, just like Sonic, Tails wears an AR Visor, which are the goggles from Sonic Riders.
Next, the four visit the Crystle Mansion, whose owners are the CEO’s of Rising Quest, an influential video game company akin to real-world Nintendo, to meet up with the two other members of their team.
The four walked around the fence, entering the path between it and the woods. So far, things were fine, at least until Warren accidentally stepped on a very thin wire, followed by clicking noises. There was a hissing sound of a rope and a second later, the four found themselves dangling in a net hanging over a tree.
''Why is this trap here?'' Sonic asked in disbelief.
''It is for intruders; a trap to prevent anyone from sneaking into the fort. Just like you.''
Sonic, Lucas, Tails and Warren looked down, realizing that they were being observed by an anthropomorphic echidna [...]
''Hello, Knucklehead,'' Sonic greeted him in a deadpan tone. Knuckles the Echidna just frowned, turning his head slightly when another person approached the group.
''If you ask me, you deserved this for sneaking around.''
[...]
''For your information, we weren't sneaking around… Well, at least, that wasn't our intention,'' Lucas said.
''Your butler wouldn't let us inside. He said that we needed to have a scheduled meeting with you,'' Warren added. ''So, we tried to find another way to contact you.''
''At least our plan worked,'' Tails added in a chipper tone. Lily just rose an eyebrow, smirking.
''Your plan worked a little bit too well,'' she said, shaking her head.
''Could you just let us down?'' Sonic asked. Lily and Knuckles exchanged glances, with Lily nodding. Knuckles then went over to the contraption that held the rope tied up and smashed it, causing Lucas and Warren to fall hard on the ground and Sonic and Tails land on top of them, cushioning their fall.
After being denied entrance by the butler that oversees the Crystle Mansion, Sonic, Lucas, Tails and Warren attempt to find a way inside, only to get trapped by Knuckles the Echidna and Lily Crystle.
Due to the fact that Angel Island nor the Master Emerald exists in the SCR Universe, Knuckles had to go through an overhaul. Make no mistake, he is still a Guardian, but he mainly protects Lily rather than a large gem. While his backstory will be explored later on in more detail, it is safe to say that he is very similar to Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - an echidna warrior who traveled across Earth with a strong sense of duty, desiring to find something to protect. Same as Sonic and Tails, Knuckles also wears an AR Visor, that being the goggles from Sonic Riders.
As for Lily, her character has been based on Yai Ayanokoji/Yaito Ayanokoji (MegaMan NT Warrior). Similarly to Yai, Lily is a rich heiress whose family owns a video game company. Unlike Yai, she is very down-to-earth, never bragging about her wealth (albeit she is more than willing to use it to help her friends) and desires to explore Neos City due to being raised in isolation in her family’s mansion from a very young age. She is also the eldest member of the team, alongside Knuckles, at least when it comes to physical age (as there are two members who are technically older than them).
Another important note is that Knuckles and Lily are the only current members at this point of the story who have any experience in formal combat, as Knuckles has trained himself in hand-to-hand combat, while Lily practices kickboxing.
After Lily and Knuckles join them, the group goes to investigate the scene of crime, but find nothing and are left stuck with no clues regarding how to find the Irregular.
Tumblr media
'Target sighted… Initializing Operation: Superior Hedgehog.'
[...]
This Irregular, known as Metal Sonic, had been completely obsessed with eliminating his counterpart. He had no idea why, but ever since he was awakened, he was driven by an internal drive to find his purpose and he believed that he found it when he came across Sonic – he had to eliminate his counterpart and prove himself to be the superior hedgehog. Admittedly, Sonic still had no idea of his existence and Metal Sonic decided to use this to his own advantage. He would find a way to separate him from his friends and then ambush him. Then, once his counterpart was defeated, he would finally be able to rest.
What they don’t know is that they’re observed by Metal Sonic, who already has a plan how to separate Sonic from his friends in order to fight him alone.
Amy put a finger on her lips, thinking about it. ''Well, my tarot cards told me that there is something of great importance at a place with a lot of greenery, and that there is a shadow looming over it. My first thought was Eden, but it is also possible that the prediction meant Infinity Forest.''
''We could check both. If there isn't anything at Eden, then we go to Infinity Forest,'' her partner, Minami Kusakabe, suggested. Amy nodded in agreement and followed Minami into the huge greenhouse building. Admittedly, both were aware that Amy's tarot reading was something she liked doing for fun, something that should've been treated as a harmless hobby. However, her past experience made her realize that they should not take any of the predictions lightly.
Amy felt a shiver down her spine as a memory flashed in her mind. She could see other humans and ARNavs, all furious and accusing her of cursing them, despite the fact she had no such powers. She couldn't make whatever she foretold come true. All she would do is to read their fortune and, unfortunately, some had really bad luck.
''Only because I said that doesn't mean that it's true. The future can change depending on your actions. Nothing is set in stone.''
While this is going on, we are introduced to the second half of the team, that being Amy Rose and her partner, Minami Kusakabe, who are currently trying to figure out what Amy’s latest tarot reading meant by visiting Eden Botanical Garden.
This incarnation of Amy Rose is very similar to her video game counterpart, albeit with a very stark difference - she isn’t a Sonic fangirl and doesn’t have a crush on him per se (sorry, Sonamy fans), but she does admire him and his heroics. Instead, Amy’s focus as a character is on her struggles with her fortunetelling. Any fortunetelling she does comes true no matter how vague it is and to make matters worse, the stuff she usually predicts is pretty bad, causing people to accuse her of cursing them with bad luck.
Amy notes how the future is never set in stone and that it can always change, but everyone takes her predictions seriously, leaving her with the desire to find someone who understands her views on the matter. She managed to find a companion in Minami, who didn’t care about her reputation as a cursed fortuneteller and immediately accepted her as a partner. Same as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, Amy wears an AR Visor, with hers being sunglasses over her headband, and is also the only Sonic character who is dressed in her Sonic Riders outfit (although her outfit will change as the story progresses).
As for Minami, she is more than she appears to be. On the outside, Minami is a cheerful, innocent and sweet girl who likes cute stuff, pastel colours, collects plushies and is very energetic; best described as a tomboy with a feminine streak. However, that is only how she presents herself. In truth, she is a menace to society (something all of her friends, including Amy, agree on), with her main interests lying in the occult, conspiracy theories and exploring the supernatural. She shamelessly uses her sweet girl persona to manipulate people and while being very easy going, she will threaten anyone who dares to hurt Amy, whom she considers her little sister.
''Could we visit the rose garden next?'' Silver asked Makoto as they walked through the greenhouse, passing by other visitors, both humans and ARNavs. There was a faint shimmer, indicating that the AR Field inside the greenhouse was active and covering the surface, the digital layer being almost completely invisible. Makoto's AR Visor was on, allowing him to see the ARNavs residing purely inside the AR Field. Had he turned it off, the greenhouse would turn back to normal and he would only see the humans and whatever ARNavs decided to exit the AR Field.
''Sure, why not?'' Makoto replied. ''Once we return this, we can see how whether the new rosebushes are finally blooming.''
Silver smiled as he looked up at Makoto in excitement. Most of the flowers was already in bloom, except for the roses, as they had been planted around two weeks ago. When Silver had seen them for the first time, he wondered whether something was wrong with the rosebuds, feeling worried that the plant was damaged in some way. Makoto assured him that the roses would eventually bloom and that they just needed to keep an eye on them. He had even shown Silver pictures of roses in full bloom, with the hedgehog being excited to see them in real life.
Ever since he had arrived, he would carefully tend to the roses, awaiting the day when the buds would finally open up. Makoto would sometimes find him late in the evening, checking on the rosebushes, staring at them and hoping they would bloom right in front of him. However, he understood the hedgehog's fascination with the plants, as he had hadn't seen any in his time, having told Makoto that the land had been scorched. Makoto felt sorry for him and for what had happened to him, but Silver was confident that things would take a turn for the better.
Upon entering Eden, the two come across Silver the Hedgehog and Makoto Ryle, who help out at the botanical garden due to Makoto’s mother being the owner.
True to his video game origins, Silver is a time-traveler from 200 years into the future, having come to the past to prevent an apocalyptic event from destroying Neos City. However, unlike his counterpart, Silver is stuck in the past, as his only means of time travel had been destroyed and he was taken in by Makoto, becoming the latter’s partner. Despite this loss, Silver is still determined to protect the future by protecting the past and finding out what the trigger for the cataclysm that plagued his time was. This story will be explored as we go on, meaning that Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) will also be adapted into SCR, albeit with some differences. Just like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, he wears an AR Visor, that being a pair of goggles around his neck.
Silver’s partner, Makoto doesn’t really have any noticeable traits that make him stand out in the team and this is something he is quite aware of. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to plants, but aside from that, doesn’t feel like he can contribute much to anything aside from offering advice. He also has no plans for his own future, being indecisive about it, but is more than supportive of Silver’s goal, serving as a rock Silver can lean on whenever he’s in doubt. Despite his insecurities, he tries his hardest to help and has a philosophical side to him. He is also childhood friends with Minami, making it his task to prevent her from getting herself into trouble. He also has a strong fear of ghosts.
While Amy, Minami, Silver and Makoto are exploring Eden, and Sonic, Lucas, Tails, Warren, Knuckles and Lily are chasing after Metal Sonic, who made his presence known, there is one more important character who will play a bigger role later on, but appears in this Arc.
Her eyes narrowed as she saw Sonic and his friends chasing after Metal Sonic, who was flying in the direction of the Eden Botanical Garden. She was actually quite familiar with the group, even if she had only exchanged a few words with them, primarily Lucas. Admittedly, she had a mission of her own, and she certainly wouldn't waste her time with a group of strangers, but they had piqued her interest. It also helped that she was curious about why they were chasing what appeared to be a metal version of Sonic for some reason.
Grabbing her own hoverboard, she stepped on it, figuring that she should be present to witness whatever was going on. However, before she could do anything, she felt a sharp pain in her back, her arms and legs paralyzed. Her heart started to race as the world around her turned pitch-black for a moment, with a dim red light illuminating it. She feel on her knees, clutching her chest as a sense of dread washed over her. It only lasted for a moment, the daylight and city noise returning. She shuddered, getting on the hoverboard and quickly following the group, not wanting to lose them.
Why is this happening to me? They feel like memories, but they're so disconnected from reality. It's more like a dream… or a nightmare.
The scene switches back to Eden, where Silver, Makoto, Amy and Minami are attacked by the Irregular who was behind the attacks from the previous night. Silver and Amy fight back, being joined by Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, as Metal Sonic had lead them here, planning to use the Irregular to distract Sonic’s friends so he can fight Sonic by himself.
Tumblr media
Sonic stood across of Metal Sonic, observing the latter. Despite his earlier surprise of seeing a robotic version of himself, he took the existence of Metal Sonic in stride. He may have been a metal copy of himself, but he was also just another ARNav. If he wanted to fight, Sonic was not only going to accept the challenge, but also defeat him, being confident that he could handle his metal counterpart.
Metal Sonic, on the other hand, just glared at his counterpart. He had been observing the hedgehog ever since he found him, making it his goal to personally annihilate the hedgehog. He felt that Sonic's existence was an insult to his own existence, that Sonic was just an inferior copy to himself. There could be only one Sonic and Metal Sonic would be the one to stand at the top.
''Let's see if you can keep up with me,'' Sonic said, using his super speed to charge at Metal Sonic. Metal Sonic activated his jet-engine propulsion system, dodging Sonic attack, then appeared right behind the latter just as Sonic turned around and punched him square in the chest. Sonic staggered back, but then charged back at Metal, who ducked, turning on his heel and attempting to kick Sonic. Sonic managed to block the attack this time by crossing his arms and attempted to punch back, only for Metal Sonic to hover back, crossing his arms, the inside of his chest charging up and the firing a beam of energy at Sonic, hitting the latter.
''Sonic!''
Sonic was knocked over, the ground around him cracking up. He could hear Lucas crying out for him in concern. He knew that he needed to get up and fight back, despite the fact that his whole body was aching. He got up, breathing heavily, with Metal Sonic preparing for another attack.
While Sonic fights Metal Sonic, Tails leads Knuckles, Amy and Silver into the battle with the lizard Irregular, managing to defeat the latter. However, Sonic struggles against Metal Sonic, as this is the first time he fought someone who is on the same level as him in terms of speed.
Tumblr media
''Not bad, Metal Me, but your toy laser beam is still too slow for me,'' Sonic taunted his metallic counterpart. Metal Sonic's eyes started to glow and he took the same three-point stance as Sonic, much to the hedgehog's surprise. ''Uh, what are you doing?'' As Sonic got up, Metal Sonic also got up. Sonic put his arms on his hips, and Metal Sonic put his arms on his hips. Sonic then crossed his arms, with Metal Sonic crossing his arms as well. Sonic rose an eyebrow in confusion. ''Why are you mimicking me?''
Metal Sonic didn't answer, but he continued copying Sonic's every move. Sonic smiled, deciding to have some fun with this, and started to do several poses, including standing on the tip of his toe like a ballerina, making faces at Metal Sonic and waving his hands. As predicted, Metal Sonic followed his every move, with Sonic laughing at some of the more stupid poses Metal Sonic made, only to suddenly have to dodge another laser beam fired by Metal Sonic, managing to avoid it in the last second. Metal Sonic tilted his head, all of his earlier goofiness having vanished.
''Oh, boy… Let me guess, this was supposed to make me let my guard down,'' Sonic said, dodging another laser beam. He then leapt again, as more laser beams followed; weaker than the ones before, but faster. ''I should've figured that.''
Metal Sonic then stopped firing, switching over to his jet propulsion and charging after Sonic. The two clashed several times, spin-dashing into each other, both equal and both too fast for the naked eye to keep track of them. Every time they clashed, dust and wind swirled around them, their last clash ending up with their heads against each other, trying to push their opponent back.
''For every move you have, I will find a counter!'' Sonic told him, only for his ears to twitch when he heard Metal Sonic charging up. Before he could get away, Metal Sonic grabbed his arms and then fired a laser beam point-blank at Sonic, sending him flying, then charged once again at Sonic, knocking him down into the lake below them.
''Sonic!'' Lucas cried out, drawing everyone's attention to the battle and the fact that there were only a few bubbles on the surface of the water, Metal Sonic hovering above it and waiting for Sonic to emerge. He didn't.
Metal Sonic eventually manages to throw Sonic into a nearby lake, and due to Sonic not knowing how to swim, he ends up sinking. This forces Lucas to jump after his partner into the lake in an attempt to save him. However, he cannot pull him up, with both being in danger of drowning. That is, until a miracle happens.
Tumblr media
''Lucas!''
''Sonic!''
Warren and Tails cried out for their friends, horrified when they realized that they weren't going resurface. They charged towards the lake, only to be stopped by a laser beam fired by Metal Sonic, who was determined to prevent anyone from helping the two. However, before the two could make another move, they saw an electric blue light coming from the lake, with something flying out of it at supersonic speed, something covered in a blue energy, and hitting Metal Sonic.
To their shock, the blue energy revealed itself to be Sonic and Lucas, both fine. Sonic was covered in blue electricity that was sparking around him, his green eyes now glowing dark blue. Lucas was covered in a sparking blue aura, his icy blue eyes having turned the same colour as Sonic's. Both were focused solely on Metal Sonic, both of them having stern looks on their expressions.
Metal Sonic was frustrated to see Sonic again, having hoped that he latter would have drowned. However, he was willing to continue this fight, charging at Sonic once again. Sonic's eyes narrowed as he stared at Metal Sonic, only to suddenly vanish just as Metal Sonic kicked the ground. Appearing right behind Metal Sonic, he grabbed the latter's shoulder, blue electricity sparking all over the robotic hedgehog, affecting his circuits. Sonic then kicked him in the torso, releasing more electricity, then threw him back into the air, spin-dashing into him and releasing all of the accumulated energy. Due to the ensuing explosion, Metal Sonic was sent flying into the horizon, disappearing from Sonic's sight. The group stared at Sonic and Lucas in shock, only for the crackling energy to disappear, with both of them falling on the ground, looking exhausted and confused.
Sonic and Lucas are enveloped in an electric blue energy, with Sonic gain a significant boost in his speed, managing to defeat Metal Sonic and sending him flying Team Rocket-style. They then de-power, having no clue what happened to them, or how they pulled it off, at least until they are approached by Touka Kageura, the aloof girl from earlier who had been spying on them.
''Isn't it obvious? Sonic absorbed Lucas' BioEnergy.''
''Touka?'' Lucas' eyes widened in surprise when he saw Touka Kageura walking up to them. Frankly, she wasn't a stranger to them, especially considering how many times she had appeared over the past two weeks, leaving Lucas to wonder whether she was deliberately following them around. However, they weren't on friendly terms with her either, as Touka wasn't exactly the type of person who would easily warm up to someone. Lucas had actually tried to talk to her a few times, but she would just leave.
''What are you talking about?'' Warren asked.
''Do I really have to repeat myself?'' Touka asked, crossing her arms and earning glares from the rest of the group.
''That's nonsense! Sonic would never do something like that!'' Tails defended his friend. However, Sonic and Lucas exchanged anxious glances, well aware that Touka had a point.
Touka's story will be explored in the following Arc, as she plays a major role in it, but the most important thing to note here is that she is quiet, cool, independent and stand-offish, if a bit smug and refusing help from others. She appears from time to time in front of Sonic, Lucas and the rest of the group, addressing whatever problem they’re dealing with in a business-like manner and leaves... her mannerism resembling that of another familiar character.
Sonic, Lucas and the rest of the team decide to go back to the Taylor Workshop, where Tails and Warren check on Sonic and Lucas, trying to figure out what the power they unleashed was.
''Well, I'm not sure either what had happened, but I do remember Lucas pulling me and trying to get me out of the lake. I could feel my body reacting to his BioEnergy, trying to absorb it without me putting any intention into it,'' Sonic explained, his eyes narrowing as he lowered his head for a moment. Admittedly, this wasn't the first time it had happened, but back then, he had better control of himself.
''It is possible that your body reacted to the BioEnergy as act of self-defense,'' Warren commented. ''You were put in a dangerous situation and your body was trying to keep you alive.''
''I guess that makes sense,'' Sonic replied. ''However, when I realized what was going on, I tried to stop it and then an orb of light appeared and everything turned into a blur. In one moment, we were in the lake and in the next one, we were back on dry land. Not that I'm complaining.''
''I think that the orb of light was the BioEnergy you had rejected,'' Tails said, looking at his device and scanning both Sonic and Lucas. ''Also, you both ended up absorbing it.''
Realizing that they can weaponize BioEnergy in a way that wouldn’t harm Lucas, the two agree to take the risk and experiment with it.
The scene then switches back to Touka, who is revealed to be struggling with severe amnesia, having flashes of memories she doesn’t recognize.
However, the memories that stood out to her were the ones were she walked through hallways, being stuck inside some kind of facility. Frankly, she hated how sterile and quiet the environment was, feeling slightly creeped out by the place. However, whenever she was walk, another pair of steps would follow her. She was never alone at that facility, having a companion who would always stay by her side. Touka rubbed her temple, sighing.
Unfortunately, I can't remember more. It feels as if I have the scene before me, but someone ripped the characters out of it. Touka frowned. Then, there is that shield I would pass by in my memories… Co-Code- Codix? Coda? She activated her hoverboard, throwing it down as it stabilized itself, hovering only slightly above the ground. No, I think it was Codex. Codex… something. She stepped on it, flying away, her expression changing to that of grim determination. I need to learn more about my past. I simply have to!
The scene then switches to Metal Sonic who, while heavily beaten, is still alive.
Metal Sonic was slowly walking, if not dragging himself, towards where he knew he'd be safe enough to recover. Sonic's last attack had really messed him up, causing him to fly all across Neos City due to the impact, breaking his arm, which was now limp, and dislocating his knee, making him unable to walk properly. He knew that he was lucky that he was a robotic ARNav rather than an animal one, as this would be complete torture. Fortunately for him, aside from being barely able to move and having his system warning him about the damages, the pain was, for the most part, minimal. Although, this may have also been because he diverted his remaining energy into numbing his pain sensors.
'WARNING: 10% Energy remaining. Activate Standby Mode? YES. NO.'
'NO.'
Metal Sonic knew that, by activating Standby Mode, he would be left lying on the street, unable to move or function at all. This would leave him exposed to anyone who passed by, making him an easy target for the Irregular Hunters. He was aware that they had scanners that would reveal him as an Irregular and his weakened state would allow the Hunters to capture him easily.
However, he wasn't afraid of the Hunters. As a matter of fact, the only emotion he felt was cold fury. He was furious that he was defeated by his counterpart, whom he saw as the inferior one. He hated the fact that the blue hedgehog had managed to damage him so much and he was determined to get his revenge on the latter. This was an insult to his own strength, to his own existence, and he would make sure that Sonic payed for his insolence.
Metal Sonic is furious at Sonic for beating him, being on the verge of shutting down. However, he is found by his partner, Ferra Ahearn, who promises Metal Sonic to fix him and supporting him in his goal of destroying Sonic. Her backstory will be elaborated on in further updates, but for now, all that needs to be known is that she plays an antagonistic role.
Another thing that should be noted is that Metal Sonic doesn’t speak, so his thoughts are usually conveyed through buzzing and beeping noises or body language. The only one who can fully understand him is Ferra, and his thoughts (as presented above) are written out for the reader’s convenience. Ferra then gets a message from an unknown person.
'''If you desire more power against your enemies, go to these coordinates and follow the instructions below.' What is this about?'' Ferra frowned, typing on the screen as she tried to track down the sender. Much to her frustration, the message was untraceable. She got up, looking around suspiciously. Someone is spying on us.
Metal Sonic is interested in the offer, with him and Ferra following the coordinates into Infinity Forest, a thick forest area at the outskirts of Neos City, where they come across an abandoned facility.
Her attention was then drawn to an old and dusty plaque on the wall. She wiped the dust off, trying to read the letters. ''Co- Codex Re- Faci-lity… Oh, Codex Research Facility.'' She rose an eyebrow. ''I've never heard of this place. What about you, Metal?''
'Negative,' Metal Sonic buzzed back, following Ferra as she started walking through the hallway.
They enter the building, eventually finding their way towards a room where Metal Sonic detects a hidden compartment. Despite being hesitant about activating anything due to not knowing what is going on, Ferra still goes along with it, hoping that this “power” would help Metal Sonic in destroying Sonic.
As they open the hidden compartment, they see a stasis pod rising from it, with Ferra recognizing the shape inside it, grabbing Metal Sonic and telling him that they need to get out and find whoever send them here, clearly fearing the “weapon” inside the stasis pod. As for the “weapon” itself...
Tumblr media
The stasis pod was illuminated by a dim blue light, revealing a small creature inside it, his eyes closed, as if in deep sleep, his arms, legs and torso wrapped in steel shackles. He was a black-furred anthropomorphic hedgehog with a patch of white fur on his chest, a black nose, a tan muzzle, and small, triangular ears with tan canals. He also had six quills on his head, four of which curved upwards while the other two curved downwards, two spines on his back, and a short, pointy tail. He had red stripes on each of his head quills, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs. He wore white gloves with black cuffs and red tongues, and air shoes which, like his gloves, had black cuffs and red tongues. Gold rings were on his wrists and ankles. Suddenly, he opened his red eyes, which started to glow in a red-orange tint.
Shadow the Hedgehog has awakened.
This cliffhanger marks the end of The Metal Irregular Arc, which is followed by The Ultimate Life Form Arc; an adaption of Sonic Adventure 2.
