Try to Imagine Looking Back from the Future

Historians, as part of their job, study questions like 'whether or not there was a turning point for such-and-such society,' 'what makes a society thriving or dysfunctional,' and 'what mistakes were made by political and government leaders in (pickthe country and the decade)?'

The events that are taking place, here, in the U.S.A. have got me wondering about the future of the country that I live in. I see a particular future in my mind, day after day. It's a future that I hope never becomes reality. And it's a future that can easily become reality in other industrialized societies around the world.

Based on the movie that I watched recently, it's clear to me that two brothers in Italy, both writer-directors, have figured out that the turning point has already been reached in their homeland...

The plot of the contemporary drama BAD TALES (org'l title: FAVOLACCE - 2020) plays out in two suburbs of Rome and in Rome, itself. In the movie's script, the scenes in the suburbs all involve four neighboring families.

All four of the families include middle school-age children who go to the same school.

To detail any of the individual events in the script would give the plot of BAD TALES away. But I do have to say that the script, the work of Damiano and Fabio D'Innocenzo, is one of the most effective scripts I have ever encountered. By that, I mean all of the situations in the plot are believable.

In particular, the scriptwriters introduce a narrator who creates a plot from his observations of the families in the suburb that he lives in.

The script criticizes the thinking and behavior of the parents of the families, in no uncertain terms.

This was an unforgettable experience for me -- one which I will not recommend to people I don't really know, as there are situations all through this 100-minute movie that are difficult to sit through.

I have to add that BAD TALES debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February of 2020, just as the Coronavirus pandemic was starting up in Italy.

The movie was evidently shot during the summer of 2019.
