Polish patriotic songs

Hey everyone! As Poland is celebrating its 100th Independence Day, here is a small contribution from me in which I will focus on Polish patriotic songs. Please enjoy!

National anthems:

Throughout the years, Poland has had a few national anthems. The first one dates back to the Middle Ages. It is called “Bogurodzica” (Mother of God). It’s the oldest religious hymn in Polish and one of the most important texts in our culture. 

Next one was “Hymn do miłości Ojczyzny” (Hymn to Love of Country). The words were witten by Polish Enlightment poet Ignacy Krasicki in the 18th century.

In the early 20th century Maria Konopnicka, a Polish poet and novelist, wrote the words for “Rota” (The Oath). Then composer Feliks Nowowiejski added the melody. The hymn didn’t actually go as far as to become a national anthem but was close to becoming one and it was extremely popular among Poles. It even used to be played from the Town Hall in Gdańsk, one of bigger cities in Poland.

Another piece that almost became a national anthem is “Boże, coś Polskę”. Catholic Church had a signifanct impact on shaping Polish sense of independence. This is a religious hymn originating from the 19th century, though it gained more popularity in the 20th .

And the current Polish national anthem - “Mazurek Dąbrowskiego”. The text was written in 1797 by Józef Wybicki in Italy and was at first known as “Song of the Polish Legions in Italy”. Henryk Dąbrowski, mentioned in the title, was the most famous commander of those legions. Polish anthem is known for its lively melody. Along with the lyrics, it has influenced other slavic anthems.

Other important songs:

“Gaude Mater Polonia” (Rejoice, oh Mother Poland) is a beautiful medieval hymn. Written in Latin, it was composed to the words of WIncenty from Kielcza in memory of Saint Stanisław Szczepanowski.

“My, Pierwsza Brygada” (We, The First Brigade) is probably the best known piece of the Polish Legions. It was Józef’s Piłsudski, the father of Polish independence, favourite military song. The lyrics are about a soldier’s sad fate but also great pride.

“Czerwone Maki na Monte Cassino” (The Red Poppies on Monte Cassino) is a reference to the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy in 1944. Polish soldiers contributed a great deal to the victory of Allies and thus assured a breakthrough to Rome.

“Warszawianka 1831 roku” (The Song of Warsaw 1831) was originally written in French by Casimir Delavigne who was impressed and intended to show his support for the November Uprising in Poland. The melody was compsoed by Karol Kurpiński while Karol Sienkiewicz was responsible for translation.

Military songs:

“Szara piechota” - another one from the Polish Legions.

“O mój rozmarynie”  - about a soldier who, rejected by a girl, decides to join the Uhlans.

“Przybyli ułani pod okienko” - the Uhlans - Polish light cavalry during WWI - were quite a popular motif in all kinds of songs. This one is more light-hearted, even playful.

“Ostatni Mazur” - a song from the 19th century based on a traditional melody of mazur.

“Serce w plecaku” - a lively song from 1933 about a soldier who had two hearts.

“Warszawskie dzieci” - one of the most popular songs from the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.

“Płynie Wisła” - a well-known song about Vistula, the longest river in Poland 

Misc:

“Etiuda rewolucyjna” by F. Chopin - one of the most popular pieces of Chopin that I honestly couldn’t help leaving out. This one was composed after the musician found out about the failure of the November Uprising in Poland

“Pytasz mnie”  - a lovely song by A. Rosiewicz about not wanting to emmigrate

“Mury” - the anthem of Polish “Solidarność” trade union that had a crucial impact on the fall of communism in Poland

Ventipop likes to shine a light on Instrumental tracks on Wednesdays and ingeniously call them “Instrumental Wednesdays”. Clever, right? Today, we’re featuring “There Will Be Hope” by Polish duo singer/composer/pianist Hania Rani and composer/cellist Dobrawa Czocher (pronounced “Chock-air”). The two have been friends since their student days at the Feliks Nowowiejski Music School in Gdańsk. They are known for their emotionally restrained yet revealing, wholly honest and authentic musical style. INNER SYMPHONIES is their newest album and it’s one of my favorites of 2021.

Polish national anthem is called “Mazurek Dąbrowskiego” (“Dąbrowski’s Mazurka”) or by its historical name “Pieśń Legionów Polskich we Włoszech” (“Song of the Polish Legions in Italy”). It was written by Józef Wybicki, music by Feliks Nowowiejski. It refers to polish history and it is very patriotic. The melody refers to polish folk music.
