Oh yeah, I made some music. It's been a while and it's my first solo project! These are from the pandemic, and I wanted them out to make space for what's to come. A little evolutionary checkpoint. So without further ado, here's PHILosophies of an Early 20sumn (Poe20) by William Toney.

i really appreciate just going to concerts and just being there to vibe and vamp and see new people and not just go/listen to the same 3 bands, yk? there's something magical about feeling/seeing new things and hearing songs you've never heard before.
obviously, if you want to see your favorite band(s) more than once, or twice, or every fuckin show they play, go for that shit. i admire your dedication. do what makes YOU happy!

VentiSongs | August 2022
Ventipop’s favorite songs of August 2022 Playlist featuring: U.S. Girls, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Mellons, Voka Gentle, BELLS, Viagra Boys, Tami Neilson, John Fullbright, Nick Waterhouse, Paris Paloma, Brimheim, Plains, Waxahatchee, Jess Williamson, Sam Burchfield, Butch Walker, River Whyless, One Horse Carousel, Mary Fahl, Death Cab for Cutie, TEKE::TEKE and Eddie Berman
1 | “So Typically Now” | U.S. Girls
Toronto band U.S. Girls leads off this month’s playlist of Ventipop’s favorite new 20 songs. “So Typically Now” is an infectious, irresistible track.
2 | “Burning” | Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Yeah Yeah Yeah….The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back with a new album Cool It Down on September 30th. In the meantime, feast on this tasty appetizer “Burning”.
3 | “Hello, Sun” | The Mellons
Utah psych-pop quartet The Mellons sound just a tad bit like a little band from Liverpool on the track “Hello, Sun”
4 | “DREAD (Radio Edit)” | Voka Gentle, BELLS
London three-piece Voka Gentle – twins Ellie and Imogen Mason and William J. Stokes – present “DREAD”…a song that compels one to volksmarch through the streets of England.
5 | “Punk Rock Loser” | Viagra Boys
The Grooviest record of 2022 so far has to be Swedish rock outfit Viagra Boys’ Cave World. I featured “Big Boy” last month off that record and this month, it’s “Punk Rock Loser”.
Previously Featured on Ventipop: “Big Boy”
6 | “Ain’t My Job” | Tami Neilson
Ha-Ha-Ha-HA! Tami Neilson’s signature smirk-filled laugh is almost as recognizable at this point as her phenomenal voice. “Ain’t My Job” comes with a full order of attitude. It’s my favorite track off many fresh new favorites on her new record Kingmaker.
Previously featured on Ventipop: “Ten Tonne Truck”
7 | “Poster Child” | John Fullbright
Oklahoma artist John Fullbright hasn’t released an album since 2014. That’s way too long because he has one of my favorite voices around. Love, love, love his previous work. Now, he’s finally back with an excellent new track “Poster Child” from his upcoming album The Liar out September 30, 2022.
8 | “Monterey” | Nick Waterhouse
“Monterey” is a lost track recently released by California singer-songwriter Nick Waterhouse. I love the mellow jazzy suaveness of the track.
Previously featured on Ventipop: “Very Blue” and “Strike”
9 | “It’s Called: Freefall” | Paris Paloma
The first of 2 featured Paris Paloma songs…she’s fantastic.
10 | “can’t hate myself into a different shape” | Brimheim
Is “fragile grunge” a musical genre? Maybe Copenhagen artist Brimheim just created it on her new record can’t hate myself into a different shape. Listen to the title track featured here.
11 | “Problem With It” | Plains (Waxahatchee & Jess Williamson)
Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield and Jess Williamson have joined forced for a collaborative effort they’re calling Plains. If “Problem With It” is a sign of things to come, it only leaves me chanting more more more! We won’t have to wait too long. Plains debut album I Walked With You A Ways is due out October 14, 2022.
Previously featured on Ventipop: “Oxbow” and “Pictures of Flowers”
12 | “Scoundrel” | Sam Burchfield
Here’s the title track to South Carolina musician Sam Burchfield’s new album titled Scoundrel. Any song that finds room for Jon Snow and Jesus Christ in the same lyric deserves some recognition.
13 | “Holy Water Hangover” | Butch Walker
Butch Walker’s 2015 record Afraid of Ghosts is one of my all-time favorite records. The Georgia artist and former Marvelous 3 frontman is gearing up for the release of a new concept album at the end of August titled Glenn. “Holy Water Hangover” is an excellent first single.
Previously featured on Ventipop: “Almost Happy”
14 | “Michigan Cherry” | River Whyless
“Michigan Cherry” is my favorite track off the Asheville, NC folk-rock band River Whyless’ new record Monoflora
15 | “Lily’s Theme” | One Horse Carousel
I know nothing about this…uhm…I think it’s a band. But here’s the description on Bandcamp: “One Horse Carousel is an independent project dedicated the production of audial curios.” What I do know is I love their new record 3 Monkeys from top to bottom. Listen to the opening track “Lily’s Theme” here.
16 | “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head” | Mary Fahl
Mary Fahl’s voice first moved me when I heard her singing about “Ariel” with the band October Project. Then again, when she sang about “Going Home” on the Gods & Generals movie soundtrack. It’s a voice unlike any other and you know it’s her within the first few notes. Here she covers ELO on “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head”…and now I can’t either. Check out here new covers record by clicking on her pic above.
17 | “the fruits” | Paris Paloma
22-year-old UK singer-songwriter, Paris Paloma, might just be my next big thing…forget the music scene and focus on what’s important to me
18 | “Foxglove Through The Clearcut” | Death Cab for Cutie
I’ve loved Death Cab for Cutie since their inception in Washington state pre 2000. They are still innovating their asses off. Just check out one of their newest and most personal songs to date “Foxglove Through The Clearcut”
19 | “Visible Lights” | TEKE::TEKE
Yes, there is such a thing as a Canadian psychedelic rock band. A new track by TEKE::TEKE has surfaced titled “Visible Lights”
Previously featured on Ventipop: “Kala Kala”
20 | “Stay Dark” | Eddie Berman
California singer-songwriter Eddie Berman closes out the August playlist with an acoustic haunting track “Stay Dark”

so we all have that one artist we wax poetic on, right? lovingly recalling the memories of hearing them for the first time, reliving seeing them live for the first time, or repeating their lyrics to yourself over and over until you committed them all to memory, only to spring at any opportunity to share that pure joy with anyone who is eager to listen.
for me, that band is mineral, formed in 1994 in austin, tx. while lauded in certain corners of the music world, they could just as easily pass under your radar for years. they masterfully juxtapose fast-paced indie/alt rock beats and drawn-out, sweeping guitar melodies. the band always kicks it and just the right moment on each track, right as you’re about to shout the lyrics out along.
as with many bands i’ve come to hold in high regard, i was much too young to know of them during their prime years. fortunately for me though, i am now at a perfect place to experience reunions, anniversaries, and other celebratory moments for bands such as mineral. a few years back, i had the opportunity to see them play back-to-back shows in one night, and that singular concert experience is one i have longed to have again. the entire venue felt so warm and comfortable heading into the second show; like all of us strangers had known each other from another time or another place. it was a type of catharsis i have yet to have again since. five tracks that will open up your heart and lovingly close it back up again.
