I’m a little bit tired and thinking very hard about port x nyo England at the moment and so, even though I’ve yet to see Van Helsing (2004), I do think that scene where Dracula dips a woman in front of a mirror and she’s the only one who shows up in this room full of people has major engport vibes 👀
Tumblr media
You should watch it, it's a good movie :D. If I tell you I'm roleplaying Vampire!Port with @greengreekeyes25 and one of his brides is Arthur, maybe you would think it's a coincidence. But there're not coincidences in the world, just fate.
Happy Samhain ;)
Ps. The other brides are Francis - who has Scotland as his lover/child, and Ana (Belgium), who has Antonio as her slave; and Abel is Van Helsing.

Rarepair Hetalia Week - DAY VI - Mermaids n' Pirates
Almost last work for @hwsrarepairweek2022! - This is the first time I do this kind of AU, so while I was drawing it, that line came up and then I had the idea of a context for this:
Iberia is a Mermaid Queen, ruler of the Mediterranean area. She has two children who are the inheriters of the kingdom. It is said there is a whole country-like under the seas made of pure gold and pearls. Of course this makes marines and pirates to navigate there, but there are legends of being devoured and the ships always dissapeared.
Our ambitious Arthur goes to adventure to find treasures with his crew, but their destiny is the same as everyone else. Fortunately for him, the princes weren't hunting for her mother or for them (yes, human meat is a delicatessen), and one of them rescued him and put him in land. The mermen have never been seeing by humans, and then Kirkland, after a couple of months, went to look for him once again. Since it seemed an accident - or the human is a total dork - Portugal rescues him again and then this scene happens.
Nop, t's not a fic, just the idea came out alone so, I shared it with you!
Thanks to @geocore who let me use their desing of sea-creature Portugal, as they imagine him from the myths. I applied it for a merman and it fits perfectly so, welcome to my new visual headcanon my friend )?
Hope you like it, and take care~

Everyone in the fandom jokes that Arthur has a flat ass but it would really funny if he didn’t and it would drive Port crazy

Ford CEO To Release Second Season Of His Podcast "Drive"
Tumblr media
What does it say about podcasting that the CEO of a corporation ranked 19th in the Fortune 500 and brings in more than $160 billion in revenue annually has his own podcast?
It says that podcasting is a legitimate media force. Kudos to Ford CEO Jim Farley for using podcasting as a valuable tool.
Usually, CEOs are meglomanical, greedy, and power-hungry. Submitted as evidence -- Linda Yaccarino X/Twitter; Mark Zuckerberg Meta; Michael Tipscord State Farm; Elon Musk Tesla; and any recent CEO of Boeing.
When Spotify first approached Ford in 2021 about the idea of launching a series with a business leader, Farley didn't like the idea. He said he didn't want to be that boring business leader guy.
So he took a whole different approach, talking about life and car memories rather than business tips.
The pilot project, recorded between the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022, aired exclusively on Spotify. Season 1 routinely ranked in Spotify's Top 50 Business podcasts, reaching as high as the Top 10 out of 996 shows, Ford spokesman Dan Barbossa told the Detroit Free Press. That was part of the inspiration for Farley continuing the project, because it's finding an audience, Barbossa said.
The top three most listened to episodes (in order) featured football legend Tom Brady, actor Dax Shepard and late-show host Jimmy Kimmel.
So, Jim Farley is bringing back his "Drive" podcast for a new season.
Farley has a fresh lineup of weekly guests, starting with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN correspondent and son of the first female engineer at Ford Motor Co. The first episode, which debuts Jan. 10, will be available on Spotify, Apple and YouTube. Upcoming guests include singer Kelly Clarkson and late-night host Jimmy Fallon.
The full lineup has not been released because Farley is still taping, according to The Detroit Free Press.
"Cars say a lot about who we are," Farley said in his Season 2 teaser. "They kind of represent what you stand for, whether you're explicit about it or whether it's a bit of a secret. This season on Drive, I'm going to talk to all sorts of different people."
When Farley talked to Gupta about what it was like growing up in Michigan, he tells how his parents met after his mother's car broke down.
"My friends would go to my parents for dating advice when I was growing up," Gupta said in the podcast. "When you have a mom like my mom, there's nothing that you don't potentially strive for, I guess. It doesn't mean you get everything. Don't, don't get me wrong. But why wouldn't you do that? Try that. Yeah, just go for it. Why not? You know, that was always her sort of approach. And so the brakes were off ..."
When Farley talked to Clarkson, she talks about struggling to buy her first car and why it was important.
"You know, my first car I ever bought for myself was a Ford Explorer Sport. And I felt like, I mean, it was way too much for me to be buying. It's my first car, but I did it all by myself. And, um, I had like three jobs," she said. "It ... just represented freedom and opportunity."
Season 1 was exclusive to Spotify and Season 2 will now be available across all podcast platforms. This move expands the listener reach, Barbossa said.
Kudos to Farley for his vision. Now, we have to get the other 499 Fortune 500 CEOs to stop focusing on stock buybacks, quarterly profit projections, and indiscriminate cost-cutting to do some good in the world. They could start with an entertaining and informative podcast.

At the same time, Mr. Castiel Novak becomes his new co-worker at school and Dean has to rethink everything he thought he had figured out.
Profound Kisses | @verobatto-angelxhunter
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 20,729 Main Tags/Warnings: destiel, smut, destiel kisses, clueless!Castiel, canonverse, post Purgatory season 8, angst with a happy ending, slow burn, mutual pining. Summary: Dean knows he's screwed. He discovers he is in love with Castiel in Purgatory, and now he can't even have the angel in front of him, because he knows it's a one sided love. It’s Valentine's day and Dean tries very hard to hook up as always, but he can't get Cas out of his mind. So he drives back to the motel, drunk, and he finds Castiel trying to help him. Then, when Dean asks Castiel for some experimental kisses and the angel accepts, Dean starts a very dangerous game… finding in Castiel's kisses the most delicious experiences, but also, his own perdition. Will Castiel fall in love with him? Or will he stay emotionless as always?
How to Raise a Mandrake | @SoraJonsei
Rating: Mature Word Count: 24,814 Main Tags/Warnings: Eventual Castiel/Dean Winchester, Magical Castiel, Non-Human Dean Winchester, Fluff, Humor, Romantic, Fluff, Alternate Universe, Prankster Gabriel, Universe - Fantasy, Slow Build, Happy Ending Summary: What else was Castiel to do when he woke up one morning to a very naked man in his backyard?
Crimes Of Passion | @celipuff
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 32,396 Main Tags/Warnings: Cop!Dean, Artist!Castiel, Angst With A Happy Ending, Drug Addict Castiel, Top!Castiel/Bottom!Dean, Slow Build Summary: Cas is a street artist from the wrong side of the tracks. He sees his world pretty clearly through his art... that is until officer Dean Winchester comes along and turns his drug induced world upside down.
The Hanged Man | @ellis-park
Rating: Mature Word Count: 87,602 Main Tags/Warnings: Slow burn, mystery, friends to lovers, graphic depictions of violence, child abuse Summary: After Park Ranger Cas Novak saves a mysterious stranger named Dean from an attempted murder in the woods, he finds himself drawn into the man's secretive life. Someone tried to kill Dean, but he's not telling who. In fact, he's barely speaking at all. If he's going to have any hope of helping Dean, Cas will have to convince the man to trust him — all while trying not to fall in love with him along the way.
Felix Mori | @deans-jiggly-pudding
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 90,967 Main Tags/Warnings: Horny hospice, tech support!Cas, stripper!Dean, voice kink, power bottom Dean Winchester, slow burn Summary: Dean is living the dream: he gets to help people and shake his ass, and he gets paid for it. Gabriel Milton’s horny hospice is a fun place to work, but sees its fair share of technical difficulties. When the front desk computer malfunctions, the burden to call tech support falls on Dean. The man on the other end has a voice that does things to him, and if he’s lucky, IT man Cas just might feel the same way. The only thing that’s missing is his estranged brother. Dean wouldn’t have had to lie to him if it wasn’t for their deadbeat father, more obsessed with a life of crime than raising his own children. Even worse than the thought of never hearing from Sam again is the possibility of growing into someone who even vaguely resembles John Winchester, and that is a chance Dean simply cannot take. Come to think of it, maybe Dean’s dream life could use some healing after all.
The Moonlight Rule | @thefandomsinhalor
Rating: Explicit Word Count: 129,362 Main Tags/Warnings: Modern Setting AU, Marriage of Convenience, Ranch, Slow Build, Home Invasion, Friends to Lovers, Trauma, Angst and Fluff Summary: After the sudden passing of Henry Winchester, Castiel learns that the late Mr. Winchester made last minute changes in his will: Dean will only inherit the family ranch he’s been running, if he marries Castiel and stays married for at least six months.

Castiel never wanted to be a hero. He never asked to be a legend. He never considered himself a saviour. However, in his efforts to make up for his past after leaving Heaven, he became all three. They called them heroes. Growing up in the idyllic village of Lawrence, Dean dreamed of becoming a knight. In his nineteenth year, Dean journeyed to the Capital to earn his fortune. Sam, with his prized book of herbal knowledge clutched against his chest, traveled alongside Dean to become a man of his own. The Winchesters' drive and ambition lead them to the castle and into history as prominent figures in the Long War. Reality proved to be far more difficult than dreams.

However, it remains a one-off, and life continues. Three years pass, in which Dean meets Lisa and Castiel meets Aaron. After Lisa’s sudden death, Dean takes some time off from his work as a police officer and travels across the states to deal with his grief of losing Lisa. After Dean returns to his normal life again, he visits Bobby, staying with him for a few weeks. One night, Bobby gets an emergency call, and a beaten-up Castiel seeks shelter in Bobby’s house, far away from his abusive boyfriend Aaron. They’re in love and are not afraid to show it. When their new neighbors move in next door, they become practically family. It feels as though nothing could ruin the ultimate domestic bliss Dean and Castiel have achieved. Until it all goes to hell. Then the two of them will be the only ones left to pick up all of the broken pieces and keep each other moving forward. Dean and Castiel soon realize that the only thing stronger than tragedy and pain is the love that they have for each other.

Jason’s 11th Annual Post/Pre-Year Review/Goals
Once again, we’ve reached that time of year when I log into Tumblr for its the only purpose in my life and reflect and set goals for the forthcoming year.  What a year this was for everyone.  With the pandemic continuing, moving to a new home, raising Dante, Caitlin graduating, this was an eventful year.  So let’s look back first and see what I said entering 2021 and reflect.
Be a good father - This is my number one continuation goal.  So far, I am going to start Florida Pre-Pay college for Dante, and I don’t know how long this “stay at home” father deal will last.  When he's old enough, we need to interact socially, but I am not a baby expert, so I don’t know if that is necessary between now and next year.  As long as I continue to be the best I can be, I should be okay.  All I strive to do is take the best qualities of what I imagine a good father should be, add to what my dad did right for me, remove what I think didn’t work for me, and hope for the best.  Will it work 100%?  Absolutely not, but it’s a start.
(Achieved - I think) - I can’t say I did wrong; the boy is still alive.  As I write this, he’s taking a nap after playing in the sand outside and getting a bath.  I did start the Florida Pre-Pay, so I feel good knowing college is one less thing later, but for now, is I think I did alright for now.  We’ll find out later if this was true or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is getting to be a bit harder to handle working from home with, but fortunately, the family has stepped up where I seem to be floundering.
Be a good husband - I feel this goes without saying, but then again, looking at my finalized 2020 post, I didn’t include this, so I guess if I was a dick to my wife last year, I could say that’s why.
I want to make sure my wife is happy.  This includes doing the small shit and the big shit.  I hope 2021 includes her graduating mortuary studies.  I may die that day from partying too hard.
(Good relatively speaking) - I mean, are things perfect?  No.  Are things bad?  No.  So I think this is okay.  There are always areas to improve on, but I also think I did a lot of good, too, and I try to focus on that more.  Caitlin did graduate college, so we went to Salem, MA, and stayed at “haunted places” even though the only thing happened, happened to me and it was just lights flickering (I have a thing with talking to ghosts through lamps for some reason).
Racing career resurgence -  My bar is set low, but at the same time, I want to raise the bar eventually.  At the time of authoring this, my car’s brakes aren’t, or appear, to not work correctly; my biggest problem thus far is having confidence in my vehicle.  For car #1, the brakes pedal went straight to the floor, and I hit the wall.  The brakes worked for car #2, but I locked them up, thinking I could go faster than I could and hit the wall.  I painted Auburndale speedway with the dead caucuses of my cars in 2020.  I did take the #7 car out for practices, but the brakes were questionable the whole time, and now, I will miss the last race of 2020 because when I went to bleed the brakes this morning, the brakes went straight to the floor.
I’m over this.  I will have the car looked at and hopefully put in a race-ready shape, so I can start the 2021 season proper.  I hope to create and race enough to be “competitive,” but I don’t think I will win a race in 2021.  I want to run when I can and as appropriate with my responsibilities right now.   I would like to learn this damn thing, so maybe someday I can “retire” and crew chief Dante and take everything I learned and behave a “thing” we can participate together in (see goal #1).
(Failed) - I did have the car looked at, and I did race once on asphalt, and frankly, I was a joke to myself and my family witnessing it.  I think mentally, I damaged more than the car when I had two accidents, and now I just don’t trust driving those Legends Cars on asphalt for fear the brakes will fail, and you can’t race with anxiety and be competitive.  Maybe time will heal that wound; we shall see.  I did race dirt and plan to race some dirt in 2022, but I’m really pissed off at the fact that nobody officiated the race I did race and was treated like it never happened.  Given Auburndale and some private messages I’ve received, along with how help at the track was a joke, this comes as no surprise from the source.
Tumblr media
I own the car for now and start it to maintain it once a week, but I will likely sell it off since it really just sits in the garage, but I can’t complain.  I tried and did something many people don’t do, so I accomplished something small.
Vacation - So good news - there are 2 events planned in 2021.  I convinced my wife to go to Las Vegas for my 40th birthday in January, so we plan that now.  Hopefully, when I write about this in 2021 in my retrospective, it will be as fun as I had hoped.  Also, the 2nd planned event, I hope it is just as unique as I planned.  I can’t say anything now because that would give too much away because this 2nd planned vacation is my 5th marriage anniversary, but I hope that is as special as I hope too5th.  There will likely be more, so this goal seems achievable today.
(Accomplished) - Vegas was fun.  Caitlin and I gambled a bit on Keno, and she had fun there as well, which I was happy about.  She said she wouldn’t like it, but I think I proved her wrong.  We went to the Body’s Exhibit, Zack “Friends with my boy Post Malone” Baggins Haunted whatever, and the Titanic Exhibit.
Tumblr media
The “surprise” mentioned fell through as it was a 3-day cruise, but COVID killed that plan.  We ended up going to a local place not too far away and swimming with a manatee.  Those suckers were big, and I was scared.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned, we also went to Salem, MA, as a way to celebrate Caitlin finally graduating college.
Tumblr media
I’m very proud of her as I know the road was long and painful.
Get a raise - I am still one of the most underpaid project managers I work with.  Don’t get me wrong, I really have nothing to complain about because my current job was the first to put faith in me. So they should get some rewards for giving me my first shot at being a no-shit project manager and not spending a decade of my life underutilized. Still, at the same time, it would be nice to get paid the same as someone who is hired off the streets and just so happen to have a resume that suggests they are good.  The best thing about my career was getting hired where I work. The worst thing that happened to my job was underselling myself, as usual, to get away from bad situations. Now I pay the price for underselling myself earlier on and making myself seem more valuable now.  The good news is my immediate supervisors know what they got…it’s just a matter of convincing HR who don’t even know me.
(Accomplished) - After winning the MARLINS contract, I pleaded my case for a raise and got it.  This is huge because it makes life easier.
Pay off Debt - This is moving atm quickly.  I think this is super important, even if it’s not the number #2 or #3 ones I’ve posted, because it will be essential once Caitlin finishes school and we start considering moving.  One thing we know is Caitlin, and I don’t intend to live at our current house much longer.  I would say the moment Dante hit’s 3 years old, if we are still living at our current house, there’s a problem.
(Accomplished) - we did pay off a bulk of our debt when we sold our house with the positive equate we obtained.  We have very little debt at the moment, with the bulk of it being the house, cars, and some small debt to buy new furniture and stuff.  This is always something to monitor and keep low.
Health - I got to live for my boy and my wife.  Since the gyms closed, the good news is that I bought a home elliptical. The goal is to get exercise and still work on the weight - much like everyone at 40.
Anyway, I think that’s a reasonable goal for 2021.  This isn’t my usual “10 things,” but I don’t think I’ve done 10 things in several years, and for the most part, I want to focus on what I CAN do more than what I should do and failed at because I said I wanted to do something to fill in #9 or #10 like previous years.
With age comes wisdom, and maybe this is wise.
(Meh) - this seems like always something I say I’m going to work on but don’t.  The excellent news with looking forward to 2022 is that Caitlin stopped drinking altogether, so that makes not drinking too easier, and I’d say that’s where I gained the most weight. I’m already on a diet and lost 10lbs, and I’d say from 2021, I’ve lost 20lbs.  Looking at some of those pictures, I’m like, “good god...”
*****
Moving ahead to 2022, we have some things to report that weren’t part of the goals from last year.  For starters, we moved.  That’s right, we left 1601 and moved to New Port Richey in a beautiful Victorian-style house complete with an in-law suite converted to be my man cave.
Tumblr media
While this house is a longer drive for Caitlin to get to work, I work from home, so it works out for me.  Plus, this is a GREAT area to raise Dante outside of 1601.  We moved here in July 2021, so we are slowly making this our forever home.
Now...onto goals for 2022.
1) Be a good father - Once again, numero uno on my list.  At the time of authoring, he is 1 year 5 months, so by the time I respond to this, he will be 2 years 5 months, and I’m sure a lot will be different.  For starters, I hope he interacts with more kids.  He and Levi seem to kick it off really well, and I’d like to continue that.  I don’t think we’re going to take him into daycare given 2023 plans I can’t discuss publicly, but I think for me, continue to try to make the hamster feel loved and all that gooshy stuff.
2) Be a good husband - I need to be better with my attitude.  I get so frustrated sometimes that my frustration gets the better of me.  The good news is we communicate pretty well, maybe not as good as it was or could be but still areas of improvement.  I need to be more supportive of her too.  Health has been a concern as of late and, while I hope it gets better, there are no guarantees, and I need to be more supportive than how I usually am.

3) Find a new hobby - This isn’t a replacement for racing per se; I just need a goal that is not family or work-related.  Not sure what this is, but it needs to be something different.  I joke about being a “giraffe trainer” since most of my hobbies end up being hair-brain ideas that sound crazy, but that’s pretty much how I’ve always been.
4) Health - For me, I’m going to lose some weight.  I think this should be “easy” since, as I stated, Caitlin doesn’t drink, and I think that’s what hurt me the most.  I’m not necessarily going to stop drinking altogether as Caitlin did, but basically, dial it down to a 2, which means nights on the weekend after Dante is in bed.  Yeah...listening to music, dancing around the house, and things aren’t the same anymore, but hopefully, I can find pleasure in other things.  A
5) Build out the house - The wife will keep me busy with this one, but the goal for 2022, at a minimum, is to replace the floors.  There are other things like repairing the bathroom, renovating some things, and building the man cave, but most are doable.
6) Vacation - So, unlike last year, we don’t have definitive plans going into 2022.  We kick around the idea of going to Ireland, but I need to pull the trigger.  I’m not sure what we have in mind, but let’s go with one vacation as a goal.
7) Professional certification - This is digging into the bottom of the barrel, but I may try something like this.  I won’t be disappointed if I get this, but I don’t want to say I stopped learning either.
8) Teach Dante to ride a tricycle - He should be old enough sometime this year for this to be possible.
9) Go to a convention for fun - idk...it’s been a while.  Maybe take Dante to Spooky Empire or the wife to a tattoo convention.
10) Start considering opportunities in business - I LOVE my job but maybe start looking at how I can expand beyond my current career and find a side hustle.  I don’t know.  This is very unlikely but worth looking into.
Well...there you have it.  Goals and reflection on 2021 and 2022. Away we go!

Greg Hoy 'Move Along' is a mantra to keep going even when life is a drag
This song is written in the throes of the pandemic, 'Move Along' is a mantra to keep going even when life is a drag.
'Move Along' was the first song written for the album 'Cacophony'. We were stuck in quarantine last spring. The Dolly Parton biography was on television. She is one of my idols. She talks about writing 'one or a few songs every day.' So that night, my goal was to write a song a day. I did that for a week, and most of them were terrible, but 'Move Along' was the piece I wrote that particular night after being inspired by Dolly. It's about how life unfolds and how we do our best to ride the chaos while we are here.
We are excitedly booking a 3-week midwest tour for the fall to prepare a new EP for release.
Artist: Greg Hoy
New Release: Move Along
Genre: Rock, Americana, AltRock, Singer-Songwriter
Sounds like: : Tom Petty, Pixies, Wilco, Elvis Costello, Wallflowers, Foo Fighters
Located in: : San Francisco, CA
About the Artist
Greg Hoy is many things. He's a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, a recording producer, a recording engineer, something of a marketing guru, a jingle and sound composer and producer, a 'people engineer' in the tech world, an art director, and a label owner. But when you boil it all down — he's really just a guy in a band.
"Music is in everything I do. Helping companies hiring people is just like putting a band together. I've been fortunate that both sides of my brain work in tandem," the California-based artist says with a good-natured laugh.
With his 2020 tour cancelled due to... well, you know what, Greg managed to coax East Bay, California's Tiny Telephone studio owner John Vanderslice into letting he and his band social distance to make 'Cacophony' - an 11 song cycle now out on gold vinyl - written and recorded in just two weeks. The lyrically output was heavy: birth, death, pandemics, and fires. But that fast and furious creative drive is what propels him to create.
When you do more, you do more. So, maybe, it's the collective inertia of all his projects that propels Greg's prolific output? Somehow, between wearing so many hats — including tirelessly touring the nation in a vintage Airstream on the Limited Mileage tour throughout 2019 — he made time to write and a record a refreshingly eclectic, 22-song double-vinyl self-titled concept album released as the self-titled Greg Hoy & The Boys.
His last 2019 release, Enjoy the View, was recorded mostly live by audio legend Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey) in Chicago & mixed in Oregon by the equally amazing Sylvia Massy (Tool, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers). Clocking in at just under 20 minutes, the band pushed the limits as a meaty 3 piece. The result is an immediately hooky slab of caffeinated, propulsive, plug-in-and-play rock n roll.
To date, the restless creative has issued over 30 albums under various monikers, including The Royal Panics, Greg Hoy ("no boys" for intimate releases), Greg Hoy & The Boys, and Twice As Bright. Mostly these days, he fires up Greg Hoy & The Boys, a loose collective of friends and trusted musicians that includes boys and girls.
Greg's vibrantly diverse output harkens back to the bedroom 4-track visionary aesthetic of 1990s indie-rock, as epitomized by Guided By Voices and its fearless leader Bob Pollard. When you distill it all down, Greg plays retro rock n' roll meticulously crafted from the timeless essentials of infectious melodies paired with undeniable grooves. Yet, within this focused path, Greg issues diverse albums aligned in spirit with such singular artists as Jack White, Dave Grohl, Neil Young, Queens Of The Stone Age, Cake, The Jam, The Who, The Beatles... "All the 'the something' bands," Greg playfully adds.
Catch Greg out in the wild in 2021.

April 1, 2021: The Gold Rush (1925)
If I’m going to start anywhere, it’s right at the beginning.
Tumblr media
There’s absolutely no way I can start this month off without jumping headlong into the slapstick-filled era of the 1920s-1930s, and that begins (and arguably ends) with the man, the myth, the legend: Charlie Chaplin. And Chaplin’s got an interesting and tragic backstory, that it’s worth looking into. And he won’t be the first film star I get into, but we’ll get there.
Born in London in 1889, Chaplin was essentially raised in the world of the theatre, as both of his parents were entertainers. Raised in immense hardship and poverty, Chaplin’s early life wasn’t easy. His father left the family, and his mother struggled to provide. Eventually, she ended up becoming committed to an asylum, which led Charlie and his brother to live with their alcoholic father, which didn’t last long. Yikes.
Tumblr media
Eventually, both parents were out of the picture by the time that Charlie was 14, with his father head, and his mother generally unwell, physically and mentally. Additionally, his brother enrolled in the military, leaving him completely alone. He left school and went to work, eventually becoming embroiled in the theatre and stage, and in 1908, the 19-year old Charlie joined a major theatre troupe, alongside another young actor named Stan Laurel. And in 1912, the group toured in the United States, where he was found by the head of the now defunct Keystone Studios, who were looking for a new star.
The first movie, Making a Living, didn’t go great for Chaplin or critics. But they didn’t give up, and put Chaplin in a second film: Mabel’s Strange Predicament. Here, Chaplin decided on a new costume. He wanted baggy pants, a tight coat, small hat, large shoes, and a little moustache. And with that outfit came the birth Chaplin’s most iconic character: The Tramp.
Tumblr media
And BAM: history’s made. Because this film is RIDICULOUSLY successful, and very popular. A hell of a lot of films come from this, and by 1915, Chaplin was the biggest star in Hollywood history at the time. By 30 years old, he had founded his own studio, was funding his own pictures, and was the most well-known man in the United States outside of the President. And this was before he made his first feature film, The Kid.
1921 was the year that film came out, and I was originally going for that one as my first review...but I decided against it, in favor of another of his most famous films, The Gold Rush, which came out in 1925. By this point, Chaplin had also become a director, alongside actor and producer. He also...had done some not amazing things by this point. Yeah, Chaplin wasn’t the best dude, but that’s another story. I’m here to talk about this film, not about his real shitty track record with women and abandoning his children. Chaplin is a dark man with a dark history, I’ll just say that much.
Tumblr media
But enough of that (for now)! Let’s get into the man and his works! After all, Chaplain also pioneered visual comedy in film, so this is going to be an interesting film! Let’s get into The Gold Rush! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap
First things first, I’d like to make something clear: I’m watching the 1925 version, reconstructed using some footage from the 1942 re-release, which added narration to it. Because I’m interested in seeing the original, as meant to be seen by Chaplin back in the day, I’m not looking at the re-release at all. But if you’re interested (and have the subscription), BOTH are available on HBO Max!
Tumblr media
We begin at the top of Chilkoot Pass in Alaska, a difficult terrain and a challenge to anyone looking to make it rich in the Klondike. Men are hiking up the mountain in hardship, to try get their riches. This takes place at some point between 1898 and 1899, by the way. One of these men is a Lone Prospector, AKA The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin), who walks along the narrow path while being pursued by a bear, but eventually escapes said bear, finding himself on the snowy mountainside.
Tumblr media
Also here is fellow prospector Big Jim McKay (Mack Swain), who’s just struck it rich. But then, as both men are on the mountainside, a snowstorm hits. The Lone Prospector finds his way to a small cabin, in which the wanted criminal Black Larsen resides.
The Lone Prospector makes his way inside, where he finds and eats a partially eaten rack of meat. However, Larsen tells him to get out, opening the door, causing the wind to get in. In a humorous sequence, the wind is so strong that it prevents the Prospector from leaving, an blows Jim McKay literally though the building. But soon, all three are in the cabin.
Tumblr media
Larsen now tries to get both of them out with the threat of violence. He fires a warning shot with a shotgun, leading to struggle between Jim and Larsen for the gun, with Jim gaining the upper hand and allowing the Prospector and Larsen to stay. The storm persists for three days, and the men grow hungrier and hungrier in the process. All the while, the shack becomes ever closer to just toppling over from the storm winds.
The Prospector ends up eating a candle with sat, he’s so desperate, and the men use a pack of cards to decide who’s going out into the storm to look for food. Larsen loses, and he heads out with his dog (who CLEARLY isn’t into this whole thing, by the way). But Larsen’s still running from the police, who are hunkered down in the storm. They find him, and another struggle ensues, leading to Larsen killing them both in the snow, and stealing their supplies. Meanwhile, in the cabin, then men are so hungry that they prepare one of the Prospector’s shoes. Delicious.
Tumblr media
As these two dine on this Thanksgiving meal (which is shown in very funny detail, including eating the laces as spaghetti), Larsen actually stumbles upon Jim’s gold, and he hunkers down there through the storm. This leaves the men to starve in the cabin, and also leads to...a very ironic sequence, now that I think about it.
See, this film was mostly made in Truckee, California. And the most iconic thing about Truckee is that it’s the resting place of a group of travelers on the Oregon Trail. See, in 1846, a group of settlers took the wrong pathway on some bad advice, and wound up stranded in the snow as a result of one of the worst blizzards in California history. This party of travelers, known as the Donner Party (YUP), starved for WEEKS, trapped in essentially a snow pit. 87 settlers went in, and 48 came out. Most died of the cold or starvation. And some survived by, well...eating the dead. Yup. Cannibalism. Which is why this is so ironic.
Tumblr media
For a hot second, Jim sees the Prospector as a delicious chicken, and ties to eat him, firing at him with a shot gun and driving him outside. Realizing his delirium, he quickly apologizes, and the two make tentative amends. However, in self-defense, the Prospector takes to sleeping with the shotgun. The next morning, the two struggle for the gun, and Big Jim nearly kills the Prospector, but is interrupted by the return of the bear!
The Prospector shoots the bear, and the two finally have food to eat. Soon after, the storm subsides, and the two head their separate ways, with Jim going back to claim his gold fortune, and the Prospector left in the snowy wilderness. By the way, EVERY SINGLE TIME I type “the Prospector”, I start typing “the Tramp” first, then correct myself. Despite this being the first Chaplin movie I’ve ever seen, it’s such an iconic character that I can’t help but think of him as the Tramp. I’ll probably slip up at some point later without catching it.
Tumblr media
Big Jim returns to his camp, where Larsen ambushes him, knocking him out and stealing some of his gold. However, he’s pretty quickly killed by an avalanche, while Jim has completely lost his memory from the low of a shovel. The Prospector, meanwhile, makes his way to a nearby boomtown, built with the profits from the rush in the Gold Rush.
In this boomtown, we meet Georgia (Georgia Hale), a popular dancer that works in a local dance hall. One of Georgia’s fellow dancers has gone off with a wealthy benefactor, leaving her behind. At the hall, she’s being pursued by Jack Cameron (Malcolm Waite), an aggressive lout who’s pestering her for a dance. And just then, who should walk in?
Tumblr media
Georgia pretty clearly wants out of the dance hall life, and is also looking for somebody to take her away from this place. However, that somebody is CLEARLY not the Prospector, whom she completely ignores. But when Jack comes back around to force her into a dance, she decides to dance with the most undesirable person in the place instead: the Prospector.
So, while this act is borne of pure spite for Jack, it’s still a dance. It’s interrupted by a nearby dog, but Georgia enjoys the dance quite a bit, to her surprise. Jack is still after her, and the Prospector actually comes to defend her, standing in his way when he tries to pursue her. This, predictably, leads to a fight between the two, during which Jack accidentally gets knocked out by a clock, which the Prospector takes as his own actions, strolling off in pride.
Tumblr media
The next morning, the Prospector essentially tricks a man into bringing him inside his cabin to get a free breakfast. This is Hank Curtis (Henry Bergman), who welcomes him into his home for food, and to take care of the cabin in his stead. Curtis owns a mine with his partner, and they head there, leaving the Prospector in his home. All the while, Big Jim is wandering through the wilderness, trying to remember where his gold is.
Georgia is out and about as well, having some fun with friends away from the dance hall. They run around in the snow, throwing snowballs at each other. And as this is right outside of the cabin, of course the Prospector gets hit by one of them. Feeling penitent, Georgia goes into his cabin, after he invites the girls in for a warm fire. She finds a picture of her from the dance hall underneath the Prospector’s pillow, which the other girls mock. But Georgia is at least a little sympathetic.
Tumblr media
This pleasant moment is interrupted by one of the girls’ cigarettes lighting the Prospector’s shoes on fire, causing all of them to rush out of the cabin. However, before they leave, the Prospector asks if Georgia would like to come to dinner, which she assumes refers to all of the girls. Still, she accepts, which overjoys the lovelorn Prospector.
Tumblr media
But the Prospector, of course, doesn’t exactly have a lot of money; that’s why he’s out here in the first place. So, he goes around town and does some work for money, such as snow-shoveling. He also blocks the jail door with a giant pile of snow in the process, which doesn’t make them very happy. BUT STILL, he gets anough money, and by the time New Years’ comes around, he’s got enough money for a nice meal and a well-made dinner for him and Georgia, with whom he’s head-over-heels in love.
Shame that Georgia doesn’t share that feeling, and has COMPLETELY forgotten about the entire occasion. And so, the Prospector waits for her to arrive, while she’s at a party at the dance hall. He imagines that the dance hall girls, Georgia included, have arrived and are having dinner with him. In the process of this imaginary dinner, he puts two forks in rolls of bread...and creates one of the most iconic scenes of the Silent Era of film.
Tumblr media
But alas, this is all in a dream. The Prospector wakes up, and midnight’s passed. At the dance hall, the revelers celebrate, with Georgia standing on the bar and firing guns into the air in the process. The Prospector is saddened, now wondering where Georgia’s been, and realizing that he’s been stood up. Auld Lang Syne plays in the score, and the partiers sing it together at the dance hall.
And it’s FINALLY AT THIS POINT that Georgia remembers that she and the girls were supposed to meet the Prospector. They head there, with Jack in tow. But the Tramp (told you I’d slip eventually) has headed to the party at the dance hall, looking for the girls that stood him up, and he sadly gazes through the window.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, at the Prospector’s cabin, Georgia discovers the loving meal and decorations put out, and realizes that the Prospector actually took this far more seriously than she’d thought. She realizes his feelings, and what she’s done, and feels sorrow about it. Jack tries to get her to forget it and kiss him, but she angrily rebukes him for it, slapping him in the face. They leave the cabin, with Georgia reflecting on the scene.
The next day, Big Jim McKay is trying to recall the location of his gold reserve. He goes to town, and resolves that he must find the cabin in the wilderness, and he should be able to find his way back from there. The Prospector walks right past him, still mourning his spurned love from the previous night. But said spurned love is writing him a letter, noting that she is sorry for what she did last night, and asks someone to give it...to Jack. Oh. What the fuck, Georgia? But Jack, being the dick that he is, sees the Prospector in the dance hall, and gives him the note instead, which leads him to try and find Georgia.
Tumblr media
In the process, though, he runs into Big Jim, who needs the Prospector to lead him back to the cabin. He promises to make him a millionaire if he does, and the Prospector agrees, going up to Georgia on the balcony and kissing her, promising to make good and come back rich! The two head back to the cabin, where they stay for the night.
But that night, a vicious blizzard once again rears its ugly head as the two sleep, and literally blows the cabin to...well, to a rather precarious spot.
Tumblr media
So, in blissful ignorance, the Prospector gets up first, and walks around the cabin, causing it to rock back and forth as the weight shifts. Big Jim also wakes up, and together, the two realize that the house is balanced on the cliff’s edge, and shifts position as the weight shifts within. That leads to a humorous sequence with a tilting set, and the Prospector looks outside a door on the side of the cliff, dangling off of it for a moment before coming back in.
Now realizing the situation, the two manage to secure a guy rope that ties the house to rocks on the cliff. However, the cabin is now tilted, making their escape even more difficult.
Tumblr media
However, Big Jim manages to get out with some teamwork, overlaid by The Flight of the Bumblebee in the score, and he also helps the Prospector escape, just before the whole house falls off the cliff.
Tumblr media
But lucky day! The cabin blew RIGHT to the spot where Big Jim found the gold, and the two are now multi-millionaires! The film cuts to one year later, with the two very wealthy men, and the Prospector’s been able to afford everything he’s ever wanted...except for Georgia, whom he never found. Yeah, she definitely wasn’t looking to be with him. Geez.
The Prospector gets in his old Tramp getup for a photograph taken by the Press, while on the ship heading back to the lower 48. But then...who should also be on that ship but Georgia. The two unite once again, but Georgia’s overheard that there was a stowaway on board the ship, and assumes that it’s the Prospector. She tries to defend him, but quickly learns that he’s become a multi-millionaire. With that, the two are reunited, and the photographer brings both of them up for a picture. He poses them in a way that brings them quite close...and the two kiss.
Tumblr media
The end! That’s The Gold Rush, and I thought it was a surprisingly heartfelt film! Really, it was funny in some spots, but was a bit more sweet to me than funny. And I really liked it, in truth. I get why it’s considered one of his best! I’ll elaborate on my thoughts more thoroughly in the review, though. See you there!

* Justin Timberlake and Olivia Wilde have a past -- dating briefly in 2011 and costarring in two films but they won’t have a future if Justin’s wife Jessica Biel has any say -- Justin is eager to work with newly single Olivia again but the collab between the old pals is a total no-no as far as Jess is concerned because she’s always seen Olivia as a threat and particularly now that she’s split from Jason Sudeikis

Truth be told, the late Chicago-reared rapper has recently set a substitution deals record. May his spirit find happiness in the hereafter.
'A Work Of Love': How Juice WRLD's Family And Team Are Crafting His Legacy
Rather than dashing to deliver new material, his name group followed the lead of Juice's mom, Carmela Wallace, by supporting her formation of Live Free 999, an establishment giving help to those doing combating mental state and medication misuse . It wasn't until July that she and Juice's group chose to deliver his first after death collection, Legends Never Die, and it found an excited crowd. Appearing at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 497,000 comparable collection units inside the us , steady with Nielsen Music/MRC Data, it got a lift from the fourth-biggest streaming week ever at that point and more than 100 unique packs attached to the venture, incorporating a product cooperation with esports force to be reckoned with FaZe Clan. For a craftsman who was a stunning streaming-driven achievement in the course of his life, those numbers weren't completely amazing; still, Lil Bibby and Interscope boss income official/worldwide head of streaming and technique Gary Kelly both state they surpassed assumptions. When information for singular tracks opened up, says Kelly, the Interscope group "extended our streaming methodology on an overall level." The name especially pushed solo track "Wishing Well," a quick fan top pick, to article hip-bounce playlists and utilized flashier highlights — like Marshmello on "Come and Go" — to "arrive at resulting 10% to twenty of fans" in new business sectors. The last turned into Juice's first passage and first No. 1 on Hot Rock and Alternative Songs. With respect to the rest of Juice's excess of unreleased material, Lil Bibby says he minds the sole course forward each day . Extra joint efforts could occur — however they should be "too key" and with companions or fans "that truly f- - ked with Juice" — likewise as dedicatory discharges, somewhat like the new track "Genuine Shit" that dropped Dec. 2, the late rapper's birthday. inside the not so distant future, Lil Bibby says, a Juice narrative is gotten ready for fall or winter 2021 delivery — a potential vehicle for brand new music, and one keep with Interscope's central goal: to "keep up his inheritance," says leader vp/co-head of A&R Nicole Wyskoarko. "There are various components of Juice's inventive vision which can at present start with the assistance of Bibby and Carmela. it's truly been a bit of friendship with all people meeting up." this content initially showed up inside the Dec. 19, 2020, issue of Billboard.

Mrs. Wahlstrom--Feb 5, 2021
How do you get into a fight the first time you see someone? When you’re the ripe old age of six? That’s the way it happened with Lloyd Tichey and me. We had just moved in to Midfield Avenue. I saw a kid across the street, playing between the two garages that took up the block. I crossed the street to inspect and got pelted with a clod of dirt for my trouble. I found a hiding spot and armed myself. After a brief fusillade, I poked my head out; so did Lloyd, who said, “My mom’s got iced tea.” Within first sips, our friendship was cemented. Lloyd was younger than I, not by much. He was a bit taller (who wasn't?) and better at sports and games. The surrounding streets were our arena, with plenty of kids and fewer cars. Were moms really allowed to drive? Not in our neighborhood. It didn’t take us long to confront a common enemy. Mrs. Wahlstrom lived next to me and anointed herself the personal enemy of kids having fun. She appeared regularly in attempts to quelch our enjoyment. Some of the games could attain high volume levels, particularly kickball. The sport was similar to baseball. An inflated ball would be rolled to the “batter.” You can figure out the rest. Four bases, hits, runs, enjoyment. Wacky Wahlstrom, as we called her, used her porch as her pulpit. Fortunately for us, she was a native Swedish (we guessed) speaker. Diatribes, accompanied by boney, croney finger-points, began with, “You keeds,” followed by screechy, unintelligible syllables, accented with various avian screeches, hoots and gabbling. Since she was a grownup, we didn’t sass her back, nor did we listen to her admonitions. Occasionally, a ball would find its way onto her porch. The nearest kid would race up there to retrieve the precious piece before she could confiscate it. Lloyd Tichey (pronounced “Ticky”) feared her least. He would march right up to Mrs. Wahlstrom and face her down until she surrendered whatever she had just nicked from us. One time, during a game break, I opined, “I wonder if there was ever a Mister Wahlstrom?” Several theories ensued. Lloyd’s stance was, “There was a guy, once. He musta killed himself.” We howled. Lloyd had an older brother, Barry, who was in my grade. He was quiet, virtually tacit, forever riding his bike down to Birch Creek to fish. An even older brother (Jimmy, I think) lived elsewhere. He was wild-eyed with bushy uneven hair and given to loud forms of addressing anyone. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING, TIMMY?” he would shriek as he raced from his car to the house. I never knew how to answer him. Mr. Tichey was a dapper, tanned, mustachioed man who travelled for work. His wife always looked furrowed; she seemed to worry a weathered washcloth in her hands as she walked about the neighborhood. She was followed everywhere by Baby Myra, a rotund little girl whose face needed constant swipes by her mom’s accessory. Their house smelled of cabbage. All the kids looked to Lloyd for leadership. He was a skilled organizer of games--a natural arbiter. If there was ever a problem, Lloyd seemed to rule. For a time, Dark Mark Longuiel, who lived down by The Field, started hanging around our street. He readily disagreed with anyone, and always seemed champing for a dispute. He even got mad at Ellen Botsford, who was far and away the prettiest girl who played with us. (Yes, we needed no Title IX; we just naturally went co-ed.). Lloyd Tichey got in his face. Harsh words, no blows, no Mark. As we grew, street play lost its popularity. We rarely saw Mrs. Wahlstrom. Once, when she was inching her ancient DeSoto down the driveway at a glacier’s pace, little Martin Botsford yelled, “Hey, Wacky Wahlstrom!” Lloyd immediately shut him down. “Leave her be,” he said sharply. Little Martin was already growing into quite the pain. But the little old lady seemed to fade into her dun, once-burgundy house. “She must have eighty Wiffle Balls in there,” remarked Lloyd one time. He remained an untitled leader in the ‘hood, but I was his consigliere, so to speak. Lloyd would ask me Big Questions. Many of these were about the aforementioned Ellen Botsford.
We were approaching the age where kickball dimmed in intergender activities. Most summer evenings, we played a game of Chase. This was a sort of an offshoot of the classic pastime, but much more hiding was effected as opposed to any seeking. I was just emerging from one of my favorite lairs, behind Crabby Creiner’s shed. I just happened to spy Lloyd Tichey and Ellen Botsford sneaking out of Muldoon’s lot, which provided excellent leafy cover. They were holding hands.
Wait! What? Suddenly, the rules of every game changed. Such manual interlocking was a brave, new world to a pre-shaving Catholic boy, at once exciting and terrifying. But Lloyd and Ellen? No way! No wonder all the questions.
I guess I liked some girls. There was a brief crush on Lisa Longborg, who was our eighth-grade lunch monitor. A veritable amazon at five-seven, she would camp at Sister’s desk while we ate on days too wet for recess. I would invent reasons to approach the desk while she sat there, imperious over her bologna-on-Wonder (pencil-sharpening was a good one), managing to sneak glances at her ever-burgeoning mammarial development. I wasn’t the only boy to attempt this ruse.
There was also the exotic, raven-tressed Ann Marie Pandolfo, whose glamour faded for me when she ironed a Paul Anka image on the back of her coat. This also garnered the disapproval of The Good Sisters.
I barely had the chance to recover from this tectonic shift in my life-views when another tremor hit. Lloyd announced that his family was moving up to Northfield, a suburb some ten miles north of town.
It seems Mr. Tichey had earned some sort of promotion at work, enabling his brood to improve their lifestyles. I was forlorn at first, then resigned.
The school year was bearable (Lloyd went to the public school), but that first summer loomed dusty, empty and stifling. There was the LAG (Lark Avenue Gang) for fun, just a couple of blocks away. Games of Chase still took place. Again I hid alone, noticing that more and more couples were pairing off.
My father even drove me up to Northford once to visit. The streets had no sidewalks or phone poles, with names like Chipshot Road or Rolling Mews Lane.
The Ticheys had a big, split-level ranch, a bigger yard. As neat as it was to see Lloyd, the entire scenario loomed disjoint, foreign. Even Baby Myra seemed clean, and the  house didn’t smell of cabbage
.I didn’t realize our city was slowly draining. People, stores and services were migrating. And a friendship faded, tattered pages of memories from a book hidden away on a musty shelf.
Not long after, I went off to Campion Prep; Lloyd ended up at Northfield High. I found the drums and Lloyd did the same for basketball. Our teams never played each other, for my school kept  an urban schedule. But the Despatch would cover Lloyd’s games, where his star would shine brighter as we neared graduation.
No sports legend, I even took Ellen Botsford to the movies once. She later ditched me for a Campion U. guy who had a sleek Honda bike. Who could blame her?
When I returned home after my freshman year at Sacre Coeur College, I fielded an odd phone call. It was from Mrs. Tichey. Her voice trembled as she told me how Lloyd had joined the Marines right after graduation. This unnerved me. I had thought for sure that a hoops scholarship awaited him. I asked for a way to get in touch. She gave me an FPO address. I wrote to him in vain.
Two summers later, I was rehearsing nightly with a local band, awaiting our maiden visit to a recording studio. One evening, a long Cadillac convertible pulled up to the house. Inside was Lloyd Tichey, in civilian clothes, but looking every bit the cut-and-pressed Marine.
Surprised, I hopped in, and we drove down to Lady’s, the seawall where Park Terrace met the Sound. It was his father’s ride, but Lloyd produced some cold Schaefers.
“I’m sick of this Honor Guard, shit, Timmy,” he began. An influential state senator from Northfield had arranged for Lloyd to secure this light-duty post at the governor’s mansion in Hartford.
“But, Lloyd,” I said, “this keeps you out of the war. Easy going.”
“Bullshit. Anyone can carry a flag. I’m a Marine; I want to fight.” I saw this was no time to voice my concerns over the Viet mess we had gotten into. His anger blossomed: sharp eyes, tightened features. I felt the tension.
We drank in silence. We both knew an argument was futile. As he dropped me off, we shared a brief hug, something we had never done as kids.
Our lives, like two opposing streams, changed courses, each divining its own path, surging forward in separate worlds. The ne
xt May, I read in the paper about Operation Georgia in Viet Nam. What made me notice was that the 9th Marines were involved. Lloyd’s unit.
I didn’t get a phone call. Reading the article in the Despatch galvanized my spine. I didn’t care about the heroes in Quang Nam province. But the article did include that a Lloyd Tichey of Northford wouldn’t be returning home. His remains, however, would.
I gleaned that there would be full military honors at Quantico, but not until a viewing was scheduled here in the city.My mom had sold the house by then, but on the day of the wake, I drove down Midfield Avenue. Why? An unseen force directed me down our old street. Maybe I wasn’t that surprised to see a cab pulled up next door to my old house.
I parked and walked over to the cabbie. “What’s the fare?”
“Some Mrs. Wallstorm. Goin’ ta Wolke’s funeral parlor. Sposta wait.”
I tipped him and told him to grab a better fare. Soon, she appeared on her porch. Hunched over like a question mark, she made for the stairs. I hustled over to help her. How old could she be? She seemed ancient when we were kids. I cradled her elbow as she descended.
“I gotcha, Mrs. Wahlstrom,” I said. She finally looked up, peering at me through veiled, powdery crinkles. I was afraid her arm, impossibly frail, would collapse under my grip.
“Oh,” she said, “leetle Teemy. We go see Lloyd, no?”
We drove the mile or so in silence. Every other time I had listened to her, she was yelling at me. This, somehow, seemed more appropriate.
My buddy, Juice Staley, worked at Wolke’s, so he procured a wheelchair for my passenger, who seemed grateful. We briefly stood beside the closed casket, bedecked with Old Glory. We were greeted by a forlorn Mrs. Tichey, looking uncomfortable in a dress. No husband in sight. She was propped up by Myra, now a young woman. I could see Mrs. Tichey’s washcloth lingering on a nearby chair. Jimmy, no longer wild-eyed, comforted Barry. The scene was fraught with an uncomfortable confusion.
No one seemed to recognize Mrs. Whalstrom, and I saw no fruit in explaining who she was. Some folks, obviously from the suburbs, entered to pay respects. This eased my tautness. Mrs. Wahlstrom gave me a look that said, “Enough,” and we made our way out.
We passed a Marine officer, all gussied up in his dress blues. He said, “Folks, you might want to stay. We are having a color guard, and an armed salute…”
Mrs. Wahlstrom, still in her wheelchair, was having none of this. “YOU GO TO HELL, MEESTER! ALL YOU KNOW IS FIGHT! FOR WHAT? TO KEEL YOUNG BOYS LIKE LLOYD!”
The man bristled and said, “You best get her out of here, you damned hippie,” he said. I answered with a mock, left-handed salute.
All Mrs. W. could manage on the drive home was, “I guess I told heem!”
At her house, she said, “You come in for tea, Teemy. You must.” How could I refuse this?I had never dared to venture through the door before this moment. I was a bit frightened as I did so. “You seet, Teemy,” she said, leading me into a living room. I rested, cradled in comfy cushions bedecked with lace antimacassars. I could smell the furniture polish and soak in the patina of age that seemed to settle on everything.
Then, I shot out of my seat, drawn to an opposite wall. It was covered with decorations, almost a shrine. There were dreamed newspaper clippings (“Tichey Scores 38 in Tourney Win”); pictures of Lloyd as an All-Stater. Handshakes, trophies: a celebration of Lloyd’s career. Looking further, I could see clips from my Who’s Who in American Colleges honors. Even that shot from an old Billboard when they handed out those Sesame Street gold records.
I stood there, in awe (was it joy? terror?) as she brought in the tea. She sensed my questions as we sat.“
I had no keeds, Teemy. You and Lloyd--good boys. Noisy but good. So I follow you, like you was my own boys.”
As the murky, late-afternoon sun slithered through the blinds, I could hear the thump of a ball and the shouts of youth. I fought tears mightily.
Somehow, it all made sense.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has proved that a British billionaire can bring an all-new car to market, today launching his ‘back to basics’ Ineos Grenadier – a rugged, hard-working and utilitarian 4X4 machine. The Grenadier, named after a pub in Knightsbridge, is expected to cost from between £30,000 and £45,000 and will go into full production in Wales from late next year. It aims to deliver the kind no-frills 4×4 performance that made the original Land Rover a legend. Ratcliffe, who was named the fifth richest man in Britain by the Sunday Times this year – with an estimated wealth of £12.2 billion – has achieved what the man at the top of the rich list – Sir James Dyson – couldn’t after he pulled the plug on his own electric car project last year. Here’s everything you need to know about Grenadier and how it will be aimed at buyers who have already turned their nose up at Land Rover’s new style-orientated Defender. Grenadier guns for the void left by Land Rover: This is the first model to be launched by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Automotive brand. It’s a hard-working, utilitarian 4X4 in the same ilk as the original Land Rover Series and later the Defender If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Ratcliffe’s long-awaited 4X4 certainly has a very familiar look to it – resembling the squared-off silhouette of the previous-generation Defender that went out of production four years ago. The boxy new Grenadier off-roader was conceived in the pub of the same name in London’s Belgravia three years ago by the Inoes boss to fill what he perceived to be a ‘gap in the market’ for a ‘stripped back’ offroad vehicle that is capable of going anywhere. The industrial-looking Grenadier has been designed so that it is easy to customise and modify so that owners can impose their own individual personality and stamp but also retrofit the 4X4 for whatever task is required. Developers behind the project say it won’t be a ‘jelly-mould’ or ‘pavement princess’ sports utility vehicle, in what could be seen as a subtle dig at Land Rover’s recently launched all-new Defender. Sir Jim Ratcliffe announced his plans to create a spiritual successor to the Land Rover Defender soon after the previous-generation model went out of production in early 2016 Grenadier is a boxy, brutish 4X4 that’s aimed at multiple markets. While the majority of customers are likely to be farmers and agricultural types, it will also be aimed at lifestyle buyers and those obsessed with serious offroading  From launch, the Grenadier will be powered by 3.0-litre BMW petrol and diesel engines, though there’s an electric hydrogen-powered version to follow Sir Jim Ratcliffe achieves what Sir James Dyson couldn’t… The arrival of the Grenadier not only comes at a time when there’s a clear void in the market, but also debuts in an unprecedented period when businesses are suffering and global markets and fortunes are being hammered by the coronavirus pandemic. It also follows the well-documented collapse of Sir James Dyson’s own automotive venture. The vacuum-cleaner mogul’s defunct electric SUV has been shown in its final prototype state in the last month, as the British billionaire – who topped The Sunday Time Rich List 2020 with a net worth of £16.2billion – explained why the plug-in vehicle was deemed ‘not commercially viable’ and the project axed in 2019. While the two vehicles couldn’t be any more different – with the Dyson electric car designed to be a luxurious cruiser – the Ineos Automotive Grenadier is also looking to the future of alternative-fuel powertrains. Sir James Dyson poses in front of the production-ready Dyson electric SUV – dubbed project ‘N526’ – which was axed last year after Britain’s richest man said it was not commercially viable  The Dyson electric car was a seven-seat SUV aimed at the luxury market. As you can see from thee images, this one-of-a-kind prototype model was at a production-ready phase when the project was eventually canned Despite the failed project, Sir James Dyson has said the cancelled electric car was not the end to the company’s ‘interest in mobility’ The car-making newcomer confirmed there’s an electric hydrogen-powered version to follow. The firm plans to leap-frog into the future with a hi-tech fuel cell that uses hydrogen in a chemical reaction – rather than batteries – to generate electric power.  And cunningly it will use hydrogen gas created as a bi-product of Ratcliffe’s chemical business empire to fuel them.  However, from launch the new Grenadier will be powered by conventional turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, supplied by BMW. Unveiling the new motor, Ineos bosses said: ‘Engineered to overcome all conditions, it will provide best-in-class off-road capability, durability and reliability to those who depend on a vehicle as a working tool, wherever they are in the world.’ Gap in the market: While Land Rover has attempted to market its new Defender as a hardcore offroader, many- including Sir Jim Ratcliffe – believe it doesn’t fulfill the needs of customers who bought the previous-generation vehicle Grenadier is aimed at a market that’s been disregarded by Land Rover  Chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: ‘The Grenadier project started by identifying a gap in the market, abandoned by a number of manufacturers, for a utilitarian off-road vehicle. ‘This gave us our engineering blueprint for a capable, durable and reliable 4X4 built to handle the world’s harshest environments. But it had to look the part as well.’  This gap in the rugged mud-plugger market has mainly been created by Land Rover ending on January 29 2016 production of its original year-old Defender some 67 years after its launch (as the original Land Rover) at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948.  Daily Mail Motoring Editor Ray Massey, posing in an original Land Rover Series 1 model The final Land Rover Defender of previous type came off the Solihull production line on 29 January 2016. The new 2020 Defender is being built in Nitra, Slovakia The latest Defender might feature plenty of options that would make it a hardened offroader – such as a power winch and tread-plates on the bonnet – but this is likely to be the usual terrain for the new version Pre-release images of the Grenadier show it being tested in extreme environments and conditions Over the period more than two million were built. It has been replaced with a modern hi-tech 21st century Defender model now on sale in showrooms priced from £40,290. Even to the untrained eye, the new Grenadier bears more than a passing resemblance – in shape at least – to those much loved original Land Rover Defenders which have now become collectors’ items and investments since production ended in 2016. Land Rover’s lawyers – who have already had one attempt to stop the new rival Grenadier in its mud-rutted tracks – are continuing to watch intently in case there’s any potential case to answer for design infringement. But the team behind the Grenadier are confident they have got a winner on their hands.   How the Ineos Grenadier compares to Land Rover’s Defender of old and new  Ineos Grenadier Expected price: £30,000 to £45,000 Production and first deliveries: Late 2021 Built: New factory Bridgend, South Wales. Dimensions: (estimated. Similar to early Merceds-Benz G-Wagon) Length: 4,700mm Width: 1,800mm Height: 1900mm Weight: circa 2.6tonnes (est) Engines: BMW 3.0 litre 6cyl petrolBMW 3.0 6 cyl diesel Electric hydrogen-powered fuel cell (to follow) Gears: 8 speed ZF automatic gearbox with three locking differentials Towing: 3.5 tonnes   Original Land Rover  Price in 1948: Around £450  Launched: Amsterdam Motor Show, April 30, 1948  Built: Solihull, UK  Dimensions:  Length: 3,353mm Width: 1,549mm Height: 1,867mm Weight: N/A Engine: 1595cc 4 cylinder inline. Gears: Four speed manual Drive: Four-wheel drive  Towing; N/A 2020 Land Rover Defender  Price: From £40,290 – Defender 110 Range price from £45,560 Launched: Frankfurt Motor Show, 10 September 2019 Built: Nitra, Slovakia  Dimensions:  Length: 4,758mm  Width: 2,008mm (door mirrors folded) Height: 1967mm Wheelbase: 3,022mm Engines:  Diesel: 2.0-litre 4 cylinder diesels Petrol: 2.0-litre 4 cylinder petrol  and 3.0-litre straight 6-cylinder petrol  Plug-in electric hybrid (PHEV) version to follow next year Gears: 8-speed automatic  Drive: All-wheel drive   Towing capability: 3.5 tonnes    It is ‘a truly uncompromising 4×4 built from the ground up’, the company said in a release statement issued today Two versions of the Grenadier from launch  Ineos Automotive will launch two variants of their own off-roader – a classic 4X4 design plus a double-cab pick-up with an open load-lugging platform at the back.  Part of the unsatisfied demand for old-school 4X4s has been plugged, in part, by a rise in demand for large, basic, double-cab pick-up trucks, they believe. More variant are set to follow. Until now only grainy spy shots of the camouflaged vehicle on test in disguise have been seen. Car enthusiast, fitness fanatic and adventurer Ratcliffe, 67, and his team calculate there is still a buoyant market for tough as old boots ‘old-school’ boxy 4X4s – Tonka Toys for grown-ups.  They have set out to combine ‘rugged British spirit and design with German engineering rigour’ to produce a ‘capable, durable and reliable 4×4 designed and built to handle the world’s harshest environments’. It is ‘a truly uncompromising 4×4 built from the ground up’, the company said in a release statement issued today. The Grenadier has been created to ‘look like a proper 4×4’ with an industrial design form that follows its function and with ‘an interior that can be hosed down’.  Customers will be able to tailor the Grenadier to their own tastes and requirements with a raft of additional features and after-market equipment  It will have 21st century levels of equipment land safety systems. Plug in smart-phones can be used for sat-nav and music, such as with Apple CarPlay The off-roaders have been designed as a ‘blank canvas’ for accessories, so customers can tailor the Grenadier to their own tastes and requirements. Significantly not all accessories will be tied to Ineos but will be ‘open source’ so customers can incorporate their existing kit – or cheaper kit from third-party suppliers. But although they aim to ‘strip away fripperies’, it won’t be spartan and will be comfortable, they insist. It will have 21st century levels of equipment land safety systems. Plug in smart-phones can be used for sat-nav and music, such as with Apple CarPlay. Head of design Toby Ecuyer explained: ‘The brief was simple. We set out to design a modern, functional and highly capable 4×4 vehicle with utility at its core. ‘It’s there to do everything you need, and nothing you don’t. Nothing is for show.’ He added: ‘Modern engineering and production techniques ensure the Grenadier is highly capable, but we have been able to stay true to the essence of creating a utilitarian vehicle that will stand the test of time.’ Head of design at Ineos Automotive and the man who has penned the design of Grenadier, Toby Ecuyer The Grenadier name comes from one of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s favourite pubs in trendy London, where he came up with the original idea to launch a new vehicle to market Ineos insists that any broad resemblance to vehicles such as the original Land Rover Defender or the early Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is simply a result of the engineering and physics required to build any 4X4 using a separate ‘body on frame’ or ‘ladder chassis’ and beam axles. The firm’s commercial director Mark Tennant explained: ‘It looks like what it looks like because of the job it has to do. ‘It won’t be cheap but it will be attainable. It’s designed for purpose. Nothing is for show.’   Ineos has identified three main target groups for the Grenadier  The first of these groups is utility customers such as farmers, forestry workers, estate-managers, ski instructors, small businesses and overseas charities and aid groups, rescue services and the United Nations. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be a showpiece, too. In fact, the second market is lifestyle customers from the hunting, shooting and fishing fraternities – those needing a vehicle to tow a boat or horsebox. It will also target ‘cool mums and dads ‘ who want a family runaround that’s a bit different. Finally, the Grenadier should be hugely popular among enthusiasts who want a no-nonsense 4X4 for fun or as an off-roading hobby. About two thirds of sales will be to lifestyle and utility buyers, with enthusiasts on lower budgets providing a useful market for second hand vehicles.   The inspiration for the Grenadier 4X4  Ineos bosses say one of the key role models was America’s original wartime Wilys-Overland Jeep – which also inspired Britain’s first Land Rover – with a simple utilitarian brief and was put swiftly into mass production. Ratcliffe and his team worked to a set of key principles, The Grenadier had to have the following: – A wheel at each corner – Permanent 4-wheel drive – A ‘ladder chasis’ and beam axles – Class-leading off road performance – A mechanical transfer box – A 3.5 tonnes towing capability – A comfortable modern interior – Hose-down capability – inside and out – Ease of repair – A design that was not a ‘jelly mould’ or ‘cookie cutter’ Where will Grenadier be built?   The new Grenadier will go into production late next year at a purpose-built factory being constructed at Bridgend in South Wales, which is near Ford’s engine plant that is due to close in September. Bosses estimate it will build up to 25,000 4X4s a year creating 200 jobs initially, rising to 500 in the longer term. Around 100 staff are already with its engineering partner MBTech at its centre near Stuttgart in Germany. A sub assembly plant in Estarreja, Portugal, producing chassis and body components will create up to 500 more jobs n the longer term. Ineos Automotive has bought in world-class expertise where needed. German car-giant BMW is supplying the turbo-charged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and the eight-speed automatic gearboxes are also from Germany’s ZF, which supplies to BMW, Jaguar Land Rover and more. The ‘ladder-style’ chassis is being built by Gestamp in Spain and the axles are from Carraro, Italy. The project has also poached talented staff with experience from the likes of Ford, Daimler, Volkswagen, Bentley. Jaguar Land Rover and Lotus. Will there be dealers? Ineos has also outlined plans for the sales, maintenance and repair network  Dirk Heilmann, chief executive, Ineos Automotive Instead of a traditional dealership network, customers will be able to shop online and via a network of existing agricultural and tractor traders, ‘pop-up sites’ at county shows and agricultural and equestrian events, and at off-road experience centres where buyers can try out the vehicles for themselves. For repairs and servicing it is planning a ‘flying spanner’ service as well as a partnership with a major international chain of repair centres.  Now that the covers are off, more than a million miles of testing is planned over the coming year including in South Africa and arctic tundra. Ineos Automotive’s chief executive Dirk Heilmann said: ‘From today the covers are off. Showing the design now allows us to focus on the critical next phase of the vehicle’s development, testing its capability and durability.’ ‘Testing ‘in plain sight’ without the need for camouflage wrapping, foam blocks or fake panels is an added benefit.’ About 35 per cent of sales will be in North America, 30 per cent in the UK and Europe including Germany, with the remainder across Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
