The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American and Caribbean-born military pilots who fought in WWII. They formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Forces. The name applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel.

All African American military pilots who trained in the US trained at Moton Field, the Tuskegee Army Air Field, and were educated at Tuskegee University. The group included five Haitians from the Haitian Air Force and one pilot from Trinidad. It included a Hispanic or Latino airman born in the Dominican Republic.

March 22, 1942 - The first five cadets graduate from the Tuskegee Flying School: Captain Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. and Second Lieutenants Mac Ross,

Charles DeBow, L.R. Curtis, and George S. Roberts. They will become part of my the famous 99th Pursuit Squadron. List of Tuskegge Airmen.

Ok that was great they sounded even better tonight B sang a little softer. I think he wanted Gwen to shine and she did I love when B acknowledges G vocals. She is so underrated(mainly by herself) i saw her in V man she can sing and her Christmas album she amazing. She lacks self confidence in her vocals which surprises me she even makes me nervous sometimes watching, lol. Trace being B BF he has seen him heartbroken and for him to show G such love/ respect is all folks need to hear.

Her voice has so many layers. One of my all time favorites.

I loved how Dustin Lynch and Trace Adkins said so many nice things about Gwen too. They marveled over how Blake managed to finally land someone as hot as Gwen. Trace said Blake really outkicked his coverage this time and Dustin added, by a mile! And they both asked when they would be able to sing duets with Gwen.

Aziza Barnes Tapped for HBO's Pride Writer Aziza Barnes, whose plays include Pues Nada and Off-Broadway's BLKS, will pen an adaptation of Ibi Zoboi's Pride for HBO. Zoboi's 2019 novel re-imagines Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice as a Haitian-Dominican coming-of-age tale. Barnes will also executive produce, reports Deadline, alongside Natasha Rothwell (Insecure) and Alloy Entertainment's Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo.

Camille A. Brown, Kamilah Forbes, Nikkole Salter, More Take Part in A Call for Revolutionary Theatre 2020 Over a dozen Black theatre artists will write articles that explore tangible strategies for sustaining Black theatre as part of Black Theatre Commons’ A Call for Revolutionary Theatre 2020. The project aims to galvanize change within the industry through grassroots operations. Storm Lever Will Host The Power of the Womxn's Vote The Hysterical Womxn’s Society presents a virtual discussion entitled The Power of the Womxn's Vote October 14 at 7 PM ET. Abingdon’s Virtual Short Play Festival Lineup Announced

A two-week festival featuring stories by people of color will virtually take via Abingdon Theatre Company October 19–30. The finalists are Atacama by Augusto Federico Amador, Empress Mei Li Lotus Bottom by Christine Toy Johnson, The Invitation by Alberto Bonilla, Sundown Town by Marcus Scott, Coin Toss by Alexis Sims, and A Picture of Two Boys by Nick Malakhow. Cast members include Andrew Allen, Rin Allen, Kezia Bernard-Nau, Denise Blasor, Danny Bolero, David Castillo, Jacob Dickey, Jose Febus, Brandon Gill, Jeff Gorti, Rebecca Hirota, Deborah Lew, Esau Mora, and Reynaldo Piniella. The winner of the festival will receive a stipend to be used to support further exploration of their piece and be invited to become an artist in residence at the company. Abingdon is also committed to producing the winning piece as part of its Around the Table free reading series. The Jury Panel is comprised of Roberto Araujo, Rashad V. Chambers, Deidre Goodwin, L Morgan Lee, Jaime Lozano, Mauricio Martínez, and Juan Villa.

Meg Toohey, Sara Bareilles, More Perform Tribute to Waitress Co-Star Nick Cordero The late Nick Cordero’s Waitress co-stars got together to create a new song paying tribute to the performer, who passed away from coronavirus complications in July. “Lucky Streak” is written and produced by Meg Toohey, capturing Cordero’s time in New York City and his life on the West Coast with wife Amanda Kloots and their young son, Elvis. Joining Toohey are composer-lyricist Sara Bareilles and the Waitress band: Nadia Digiallonardo, Rich Mercurio, Lee Nadel, Yair Evnine, and Adam Kaufmann. “Getting to sing on Meg Toohey’s gorgeous tribute to our friend Nick was a gift,” said Bareilles. “I wept as I sang. This song is cathartic...beautiful and bittersweet, and speaks of the pain of love and loss and the gentle universal truth that we must hold it all lightly and enjoy our lucky streaks; these perfectly imperfect lives. What a song.”

Lineup Set for Urban Stages Benefit, Mixing Melodies and Margaritas Urban Stages' virtual benefit, Mixing Melodies and Margaritas: Make a Drink, Raise a Glass, Save the Theater, will be available on UrbanStages.org October 22 at 6:30 PM through October 26 at 6:30 PM. The benefit will feature musical performances along with how-to guides for cocktails/mocktails. WBAI host King Downing and theatre writer Michael Riedel will serve as masters of ceremonies with performances and/or appearances by Karen Akers, Aya Aziz, Terence Archie, Jenny Lyn Bader, Trezana Beverley, Reed Birney, Bill Bowers, Jim Dale, Joe Iconis, Lori Brown Mirabal, Sue Matsuki, David Quinones, Ilanna Saltzman, George Salazar, Disnie Sebastien, Tom Toce, and Zhu Yi. Kristian Seemel will serve as the event’s video director with Ryan Belock as video designer and editor. The benefit is free, although donations are encouraged; an online auction continues through October 31.

Gina Hunt: Azimuth

Azimuth presents new site-responsive works by Chicago-based artist Gina Hunt. The exhibition title is a term Hunt encountered during her recent research on sundials, the earliest tools for measuring time; azimuth describes the distance and direction of the sun from the observer. The artist will create an actual sundial on the south-facing exterior wall of the Franklin and will visit the site at regular intervals to make timeline marks based on the movement of light and shadows. Inside the Franklin, Hunt’s screens made from layers of theater scrim that she has dyed red, green, and blue—referencing the colors of light on our digital screens and the cones in our eyes, which are sensitive to red, green, and blue wavelengths—will filter the natural light and create an ever-changing experience. Hunt’s project will be on view from May until August, as the sunlight shifts from the soft and diffused glow of spring to the intense and direct glare of summer. Azimuth will also overlap with the summer solstice.

Hunt has long been interested in “technologies of imaging through the medium of light,” from her early cyanotypes on rice paper, to her more recent paintings on cut and twisted canvas, to her current installations employing hand-dyed theater scrim. She began using scrim while traveling for residencies and a fellowship in 2016 not only because of its malleability and durability, but also its “magical ability to become translucent or opaque depending on the light source.” Surprising interference patterns are formed in her layers of the thin cotton mesh. Hunt’s research has recently yielded: a triangular installation of colorful screens at Badlands National Park in South Dakota; layers of polyester netting stretched between metal poles on Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus in Doha, Qatar; rectangular window coverings at University Galleries of Illinois State University and Drew University in Madison, New Jersey; and an outdoor information booth wrapped with vibrantly colored screens at the now-closed Fergus Falls State Hospital in Minnesota.

Hunt’s work has been exhibited at Virginia Commonwealth University, Doha, Qatar; Drew University, Madison, New Jersey; 65GRAND, Chicago; University Galleries of Illinois State University, Normal; DEMO Project, Springfield, Illinois; E. Tay Gallery, New York; Hoffman LaChance Contemporary, St. Louis; Front Room Gallery, Brooklyn; Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, Illinois; Jan Brandt Gallery, Bloomington, Illinois; and The Soap Factory, Minneapolis, among others. She was the 2015-2016 Fellow at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. The artist’s work is included in the collections of the National Park Service, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Minnesota State University. Hunt received an MFA from Illinois State University, an MA from Minnesota State University, and a BFA from Minnesota State University.

The Franklin is pleased to present a conversation between artist Gina Hunt and curator Kendra Paitz on Sunday, July 15 at 2pm. This event is organized in conjunction with Hunt’s Azimuth, which was curated by Paitz. The exhibition is on view at The Franklin through August 4.

The conversation will be followed by a performance by Chin-Ting Huang. The Space I Can’t Get In V.2, a performance utilizing bottles, microphones, amps, a mixer, and a lightbox to, in her words, “activate the space as a sequence of mumbles, sounds that evoke breath and make absence present.” She elaborates that the work offers “a look into the private personal biography and into our relationship with everyday objects and how they define our social relations with others.” The artist uses bottles and microphones as instruments, and for this iteration, she will include discarded alcohol bottles collected by Edra Soto (Co-founder of The Franklin) in the Garfield Park neighborhood where The Franklin is located.

Gina Hunt’s work has been exhibited at Virginia Commonwealth University, Doha, Qatar; Drew University, Madison, New Jersey; 65GRAND, Chicago; University Galleries of Illinois State University, Normal; DEMO Project, Springfield, Illinois; E. Tay Gallery, New York; Hoffman LaChance Contemporary, St. Louis; Front Room Gallery, Brooklyn; Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, Illinois; Jan Brandt Gallery, Bloomington, Illinois; and The Soap Factory, Minneapolis, among others. She was the 2015-2016 Fellow at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. The artist’s work is included in the collections of the National Park Service, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Minnesota State University. Hunt received an MFA from Illinois State University, an MA from Minnesota State University, and a BFA from Minnesota State University. She currently lives in Chicago.


Chin-Ting Huang’s work has been exhibited at the Sullivan Galleries at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and NHCUE Art Space, Hsinchu City, Taiwan. She has performed at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, as well as several Chicago galleries, including 062 Gallery, Defibrillator, Nail in a Packet, and Goldfinch Projects. She received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BFA from National Hsinchu University of Education, Hsinchu City, Taiwan.

Kendra Paitz is Director and Chief Curator at University Galleries of Illinois State University. She has organized solo exhibitions featuring Terry Adkins, Carrie Schneider, Dianna Frid, Edra Soto, Juan Angel Chávez, Ebony G. Patterson, Deb Sokolow, Melanie Schiff, Jason Lazarus (co-curated with Barry Blinderman), Stanya Kahn, Lori Waxman, Alice Hargrave, Kendell Carter, Stephanie Brooks, Oliver Herring (co-curated), Irena Knezevic, Adam Farcus, and Shinique Smith, among others. Her group exhibitions include Strange Oscillations and Vibrations of Sympathy, The House of the Seven Gables, Orison for the Forest, and but you gave me flowers. She has authored, edited, and supervised the publication of ten exhibition catalogues at University Galleries. Paitz's essays and interviews have been published by University Galleries of Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois; Tisch School of the Arts, New York University; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Daylight Books, Hillsborough, North Carolina; and Golden Parachutes, Berlin.
