Mastodon is having their very own Goncharov moment! Come, take a journey with me...
Gossip rag Mediaite recently reported on Elon Musk banning Mastodon's official Twitter account, @joinmastodon. Unfortunately, they somehow misread this as "John Mastodon" and assumed this completely fictional individual must be the founder of the decentralized Twitter alternative.
Tumblr media
In truth, Mastodon was founded by German computer programmer Eugen Rochko... who himself was amused, if somewhat bewildered by the news.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, human creativity took root in this fertile new meme soil, and John Mastodon's lore began to grow...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His identity is still unstuck in place and time, but you can imagine John Mastodon as the cool anarchist techno-chad who swirlied loser nerd Elon Musk in high school. As for anything beyond that, well... you know what they say.
Nobody can be told who John Mastodon is. You have to be SHOWN.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally, my own small contribution to this ongoing lore-chaos:
Tumblr media
While yet nascent, I do wonder how far Mastodon's Goncharov-alike will go...

I wasn't expecting this in my Discover Weekly, but the Goncharov OST is on Spotify. Sad that the intro credits sequence isn't the visual for the song though.

a speech about goncharov i made for my public speaking class!
note: this is not exactly what will be spoken for my class, as i am not reading my speech word-for-word. however, this is an outline of the speech i will be presenting, and i thought y'all might be interested in seeing it.
Introduction:
The purpose of my speech is to inform my audience of the fake movie “Goncharov” and how it has impacted me. My goal is to inform my audience of how the fake movie “Goncharov” came to be and of the value it has.
By a quick show of hands, how many of you have seen or heard of Goncharov before? [Quick pause as I wait for no hands – or almost no hands – to go up.] Alright. So, Goncharov was a 1973 mafia movie supported by Martin Scorsese, and has been widely regarded as the greatest mafia movie of all time. It’s about the Russian mafia in Naples, Italy, and follows a variety of characters such as Goncharov himself, Katya, who is Goncharov’s wife, Audrei “The Banker” Daddano, and my personal favorite, Joseph “Ice Pick Joe” Morelli, with actors such as Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, and Lynda Carter. So, why have you never heard of this movie before? Well, everything I just told you? It’s all a lie. It’s all made up. Goncharov? Yeah. It never actually existed.
I remember being part of the Goncharov fandom as it first blew up on Tumblr in late 2022. It was a great source of joy for me and made a significant impact on Tumblr’s culture. I am going to show my audience how Goncharov came to be, the creativity is spawned, and briefly reflect on how the website it originated on was vital for its growth.
So, what is Goncharov, and what is going on here?
Origins:
Goncharov was a fake movie created by Tumblr in late 2022.
Sometime prior to August 22nd, 2020, Tumblr user ZootyCoon posted a photograph of knockoff boots they had bought that advertised a non-existent movie, Goncharov, on them, claiming that Goncharov was “the greatest mafia movie of all time.” In response, on August 22nd, 2020, another Tumblr user, AbandonedAmbition, commented “This idiot hasn’t seen Goncharov”, which was then added to the post itself by Tumblr user LoserMo.
While ZootyCoon’s original post did receive some attention, it wasn’t until November 18th, 2022 that Goncharov truly hit it off as a cultural phenomenon, thanks to Tumblr user Beelzeebub, who posted a fan-made poster for Goncharov, receiving almost 20,000 likes and over 15,000 reblogs in three days.
Fandom:
As it turns out, you don't actually need a piece of media to be real in order for a fandom to form around it.
Countless fanworks were created for Goncharov, including fanart, fanfiction, music, scene analysis and analysis of motifs, gif sets, memes, and so much more. As mentioned in a YouTube video by YouTuber ColeyDoesThings, there was even a time where Goncharov had more fanfiction on a popular fanfiction website than James Cameran’s Avatar, the highest grossing movie of all time.
So much lore was being created for Goncharov in such a short amount of time that efforts had to be made to record it all. Multiple individuals attempted to create a “master copy” of Goncharov’s lore, including what is now a 48-page Google doc that includes a plot summary, brief descriptions of various scenes, and links and sources to various contributors.
But Goncharov could not be contained just to Tumblr. Various media outlets, such as The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes, and The Washington Post all posted articles about Goncharov, an internet phenomenon.
Tumblr:
But, why? Why this fake movie, and why on Tumblr of all places?
As a social media site, Tumblr has an incredibly weird culture. There are no public follower counts, no verification for users, and a whole array of weird social rules. But one thing that really makes Tumblr special is the interaction between large and small blogs alike. Because anyone can and is encouraged to create their own content and add to others’ content, something like Goncharov could very quickly become a “yes, and” game among Tumblr’s users.
Tumblr is also very much a “fandom” site. Fanart, fanfiction, and other fanworks dominate the website, and Goncharov in its heyday was no exception. Interactions between fans and fan creators is what really causes fandoms to grow and survive, so it makes sense that Goncharov thrived the way it did considering how easy it was to find fellow fans. With no pressure to reveal your “true” self, there’s a lot less pressure when you share what you’ve created.
Conclusion:
So, what can we learn here?
The fake movie “Goncharov” was unintentionally created by a tag on a pair of off-brand boots but didn’t truly become popular until Beelzebub’s poster. Fandom quickly grew around it, creating countless fanworks, but Tumblr’s unique culture as a social media site is what truly allowed it to thrive.
There is joy and creativity in unusual places. Whether or not you believe Goncharov to be a waste of time, the popularity of a fake movie says something about the human fascination with stories. Thank you.

MOVIE FACTS: In Goncharov (1973), at around 10 minutes 4 seconds into the film, what many fans have claimed to be a DeLorean can be seen for a few frames. This is thought to be in reference to Back to The Future (1985), considering the significance of clocks in the film's narrative.
Tumblr media
This mystery has puzzled fans and critics alike for decades, seeing as the DeLorean car was not yet on the market, and Back to The Future would not release for another 12 years. Some have even speculated on fan forums such as the Official Goncharov Wiki that director Martin Scorsese, Robert Zemeckis, and John DeLorean made a secret deal to place this impossible reference in the film to drum up excitement for Goncharov's rumored sequel, which was allegedly scheduled for release in December of 1985. However, talk of a sequel has neither been confirmed nor denied, as director Martin Scorsese has famously refused to comment on the alleged reference, claiming that fans are "looking too deep into this movie."

I think that people really misunderstood the relationship between Andrey and Katya. They are not true foils; they are much more alike than anyone gives them credit for. Goncharov, perhaps, understand and acknowledged their similarities in the poker scene, but his ability to comprehend the parallels between his relationships with them are overshadowed by his desire for Andrey and his fear of Katya. Perhaps the most compelling demonstration of Katya and Andrey’s similarities is the fact that the clock symbolism is tied to them and them alone- while Katya’s narrative arch is framed by the clock running out and stopping, Andrey’s character arch is framed by him winding the watch. Both characters are on the same spectrum, but move in opposite directions. In the middle of the two lies Goncharov, and the main conflict of the film lies not within the opposing motives of Katya and Andrey, but rather in Goncharov’s blindness to how each character affects him and his inability to make a decision regarding with whom he will align himself.

what (human) social media do you think the hexaquad uses/is on. Because personally I think Luz is weird and bi enough that she would use tumblr and completely commit to the goncharov bit
Luz absolutely uses tumblr as her primary socmed and she has an intimate relationship with the nature of its insanity. She's the one the others ask when they stumble across an utterly incomprehensible meme and Luz will be like "Okay so basically the origin of eeby deeby is--"
She has two blogs. One for art and one for reblogs/fandom/shitposting. She used to have a twitter but she deleted it some time during the Thanks to Them montage because she was dealing with too much bullshit to tolerate the cesspool. She has an Instagram that she uses exclusively for posting art.
Oh and ao3. How could I forget ao3?
I feel like Amity is completely uninterested in human social media. Out of all the kids, she's the only one who didn't really find a specific hobby/interest during her time in gravesfield. She's already got a pensta and she likes how it's tailored for witch society. She'd have no interest in Instagram or twitter or shit like that. BUT she would absolutely go apeshit once she discovers the Good Witch Azura fandom in the Human Realm. (Literally NOBODY back home even knew what those books were.) She doesn't understand the memes and shitposts or general culture but Amity would absolutely have a fandom specific tumblr. She mostly just reblogs from Luz. An ao3 too of course <3
Willow used pensta for general teen reasons like selfies and socializing with her friends before she came to Gravesfield but now that she's developed an interest in photography? Oh that girl's account is gonna get such a glo up. She'd have an Instagram too. She actually becomes pretty popular on both accounts. Not ✨️Influencer✨️ status but she's gained quite a following of humans and witches alike.
I like to imagine that she also has a Pinterest. Idk she strikes me as somebody who'd enjoy collecting aesthetic pics and making boards. For the same reason she also has a tumblr that's mostly aesthetic with the occasional feral little reblog like this thrown in
Tumblr media
Gus is a tiktok kid!!! Gus is SUCH a tiktok kid!!! I could also see him having a YouTube channel where he posts deranged little vlogs (in this universe Gus13 does not exist or its after it happened and only adds more fuel to the fire.) A twitch too maybe?? I could see him streaming. Basically I just think Gus would be drawn to all the video-focused social media.
I think he'd have a twitter too where he tweets his insane little thoughts and it actually blows up in popularity because people think it's a parody account.
Also....he would read Wikipedia religiously and eventually get banned from making his own edits.
Ok ok ok ok I think it would be so funny if Hunter got his penstagram account back in ASIAS, got so excited about finally having a regular teen experience but after a year or so once he's become well acquainted with pensta culture he's like "Well. This sucks."
So basically
Tumblr media
Back when Hunter got a scroll, he followed Willow and that was that. He never followed anyone else. He has never posted anything. He can't even be convinced to follow any more of his friends. Not even Gus. He has notifications on for when Willow posts. He pops in to like them and then he fucks off again. People have forgotten that Hunter even has an account.
But when it comes to human socmed OHHHHH....
I want to say he has a devianart. But I'm not sure because I'm pretty sure that devianart is a husk of its former self. So he probably just has a tumblr. Hunter has not yet learned that you can make seperate blogs for all your different interests so his blog is a cluttered mess of his whole autistic self Cosmic Frontier brainrot, wolves, anime, the occasional embroidery pics that Willow tags him in.
Also he would be on neopets.
BONUS CHARACTERS:
Camila is on Facebook and Instagram. Also after the events of the series she gradually begins to rediscover the Cosmic Frontier message boards she used to frequent back when Manny was still alive. They brought back memories of her grief for the longest time but she's beginning to once again embrace her love for the series. She's even reconnected with some old online friends <3
Vee would have all the Normal Human Teenage Girl Social Media. She mostly uses twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. She also stays active on Facebook just to like her mom's posts.
Mattholomule would use reddit. Don't disagree with me I'm right.

how Goncharov (1973), unlike its protagonist, got away with that perfect “crime”
Goncharov (1973) is finally getting the recognition it deserves! Like, this movie meant so much to a lot of people even if it wasn’t widely distributed. It was groundbreaking in so many ways... it’s super cool by today’s standards but back then it was revolutionary.
From a historical perspective, lgbtq+ characters have been portrayed in cinema ever since its invention. But how they were portrayed was the big deal. The Hays Code, which was established in the 30s, forbade any positive portrayals of “deviancy”- which included homosexuality or nonconforming gender expression. However, some degree of this “deviancy” was allowed- as long as it reinforced that “deviant” was what it was. In other words, queer had to mean bad.
“Queercoded villain” or “negative” representation was (and still is) a common way for writers and directors to write queer characters, as villains are generally “bad” characters that the audience doesn’t empathize with. They’re terrible people who do terrible things- thus associating “evil” with “queer”. (There are plenty of cinema history videos on youtube that explain this much better than me.)
Another common way to write gay characters without getting punished by the movie industry was (and is) the “bury-your-gays” trope, (which y’all on tumblr know very very well). Any sympathetic, protagonistic queer story (which had to relegate to side stories!) had to be end in tragedy- usually death. Thus, “being queer” gets associated with “being dead.”
BUT BACK TO GONCHAROV!
I mean, with the Hays Code freshly abolished five years prior, the movie industry was really hesitant to portray openly queer relationships or characters at all, so having not one but four queer(coded) main characters was completely unheard of. Plus, on a film development timeline, this had to be in development at least two or three years prior- probably more since producers wouldn’t pick this one up so easily- so it was probably being written when the Hays Code was in place. Post-Hays, queer films were “allowed”- but usually rated in a way that would forbid any young impressionable audiences from viewing something so scandalous as- gasp- gay people!
But Gonrachov’s genius here isn’t even in its writing, or inclusion of queer characters. It’s in the use of genre to do those things.
The mafia movie is the perfect way to subvert both of these practices. Yes, the queer characters are “bad” people who do monstrous things and meet tragic, lonely fates. But so is every other character in any other mafia movie! Everyone’s villainous in mafia movies, protagonists and antagonists alike! And that rating’s going to be high- for mature audiences only- but so is literally any other serious mafia movie. It’s not getting on the Family Learning Channel, but that’s not because of the gay people, that’s because of Fucking Ice Pick Joe!
Goncharov accomplished something that no other film had before- by creating sympathetic queer main characters who were treated the same as any other main character- all while flying under the radar!

✨MSP Episode 11 Thoughts✨
wheree do i even start
how about ALL OF YOU LIED TO ME?? i feel scammed!! i was led to believe through every single thing i encountered that tinn and gun would have a fallout of some sort OR their relationship would suffer somehow. apparently i experienced goncharov levels of conspiracy, all of bl tumblr teamed up to stress me out because what actually awaited me was tinngun being sweet supportive boyfriends for over an hour!
speaking of which, from all the people dropping hints and nudging me to watch it, precisely zero told me it was the length of a kdrama episode! i was predicting like a 50min long script, how was i supposed to know gmm had decided to cosplay as tvn for a day?
episode 11 being longer and still not containing the iconic couple conflict but leaving it for the very last episode is just another way to break the norm, it's what bad buddy did, it's just not how bad buddy did it. and i want to take a moment to appreciate that the series decided it is more important to properly end the hot wave arc and show tinn's mom figuring out this whole thing mostly by herself and with the help of her husband rather than lashing out at her son. there was enough time spent on these things so the events of episode 12 don't feel rushed and the characters' actions don't seem unmotivated.
what was going on with tiwpor though?? i knew these two would be as rushed as a sequel to a hit hollywood movie but goodness..yet somehow..it works? tiwpor having bbq. then tiwpor having dinner. two meals and those kids are practically planning how to move in with each other as soon as possible.
the man the myth the legend tiwson wasn't even with the gang for most of the episode (my theory is that had he been there for the big fight, there would be no other way for his character to react other than getting down on all fours by por's side and growling at everyone..so they had to cut him out entirely)
experiencing soundgun confirming their devotion and then attacking each other like wild hyenas thirty minutes later was one of the highlights but something i enjoyed even more was pat giving off "had a crush on my bestie but gave up on it cause we're too alike" vibes, i did not expect to get so much personality from either tiw or por but pat had my head spinning
tiwson in the first five minutes like "yall bout to break up? sucks mate. well, we had a good run!" ..i cannot believe i thought this man was about to break down and tell tinn about all that he's been enduring for him. man's only as invested as the task at hand gives promise of a bl drama plot unveiling before him. (also, how did he see his relationship with por developing in that scenario? "tinn and gun can do whatever, i'm going to bite that cute bbq chef and the holy chinzhilla can watch from the corner for all i care")
realising tinn could've not become a school president to help them win but then realising he had to do it for the guys anyways because they would have had to give up long before hot wave
this is on top of my head pretty much, i've got opinions on every second of this whole thing though

Long post below; tl;dr, an explanation of how the atypical distribution contract of Goncharov (1973) led to its modern status as a Scorsese cult classic.
Something I think people have been missing out on when analyzing Scorsese’s Goncharov (1973) is how early a directorial work it was for him. Remember, this movie is coming on the heels of Boxcar Bertha (1972), a work mostly known for the criticism it prompted from John Cassavetes: “You’ve just spent a year of your life making a piece of shit.”
Boxcar was largely derivative of Corman pictures, who did, admittedly, produce the film; regardless, it’s clearly an early work by Scorsese, missing many of the visual and stylistic hallmarks he’d later come to be known for. Not surprising—most directors associated with Corman took a minute to develop their own distinct directorial touch (Scorsese, Bogdanovich, Ford Coppola, even James Cameron).
Goncharov, then, was conceived by Scorsese at a very delicate moment in his career: shaking off the overt directorial influence of Corman and attempting to step into his own as a filmmaker, he needed a project that would maintain the unique moodiness, style, and character-driven narrative present in Boxcar while also marrying those stylistic elements to an original and compelling narrative.
In comes—Goncharov? Nope. Mean Streets (1973), starring De Niro, distributed by Corman and financially backed by Jonathan T. Taplin. Mean Streets is largely considered Scorsese’s directorial breakthrough; the intensely personal script, the high drama and deeply emotional narrative, the personal struggle with faith and guilt all served to catapult Scorsese to international stardom.
Goncharov, distributed almost simultaneously with Scorsese’s Mean Streets at the end of 1973, had a comparatively limited run, distributed via handshake agreement with a small number of third-run movie theaters and adult film houses. Goncharov, as a result, has been largely ignored by critics and audiences alike. Its impact on American culture in 1973 was negligible, especially compared to the wide-spread acclaim of Mean Streets. Goncharov was released silently, with no advertising other than word-of-mouth, through a handful of theatres of ill-repute. Some copies of the film didn’t even credit Scorsese as director. It was almost as though Scorsese was embarrassed by the film, and wanted it distributed as subtly as possible.
Despite this apparent reluctance, Goncharov is an obvious masterpiece. It’s undeniably a stronger directorial effort than Mean Streets, and arguably comparable in quality to Goodfellas (1990). His visual style is distinct, the narrative wrenching, the characterization and dialogue so flawlessly conceived the film would read as cinéma vérité, if the implications of any truth in this fiction were not unbearable to consider. Katya may well be the most compelling female character in Scorsese’s oeuvre. Harvey Keitel as Andrey brings a surprising softness to a character who seems from the outset a sort of accountant from hell. And the eponymous Goncharov is a flawless portrait of a man driven to an internal edge by inherited guilt. So why was the film essentially buried from the outset?
I’m glad everybody’s thinking about the characters, but I’d also love to see more speculation as to why Scorsese was so reluctant to publicly claim and distribute Goncharov. It’s like Michelangelo refusing to claim the Statue of David.

Goncharov Family Tree
Tumblr media
Okay, so please do let me know if I've made any mistakes. This is the entire Goncharov family tree as I understand it. Anyone familiar with the Goncharov story will know that such images are to be taken with a pinch of salt.
There is ample evidence supporting the romantic attraction between Andrey and Goncharov, and Katya and Sofia. I haven't portrayed these as that would have taken way too much time.
Scholars still argue that Mario is implied to be Sofia's brother so I have included him as such (although it is never implicitly stated).
Many will also argue that Valery was never interested in Luciana romantically and their friendship was misconstrued by the characters and audience alike. However, it has never been confirmed either way hence the wonky line. If this were to be true, it would lend credence to the theory that Valery is Ace.
