テスト会場がホテル…②

長女のFAST Assessmentsがあってから、約1ヶ月が過ぎました。今日は次女も一緒に受ける日だったので、2人一緒に連れて行きました。ところが、私のうっかりミスでテスト会場が前回と違うことに気付いた…というか、最初のホテルに到着して前回と同じ会場へ行ったら、ホテルの従業員さんから、「今日はそういう予定入ってないよ」と言われました。それを聞いて慌てて確認したら、別のホテルがテスト会場。私ってホント、ボケてる… 約15分遅れましたが、無事今回のテスト会場へ到着。遅れたのですが、普通にウェルカムな感じ。日本だったら、即反省モードになっていたと思います。実は運転中、「遅れた理由を聞かれたら、何て言い訳しようか」を考えていました。どんな母親なんだ…私は。(笑) 今回のテスト会場は、Embassy…

Shaun Michael Spaulding has been missing since March 17th, 2022. The then-39-year-old man was last seen at the Homewood Suites Hotel on New York Avenue NE in Washington, DC. Shaun never returned to his home in Arlington, Virginia and has never been seen or heard from again.

Shaun was reported missing to the Arlington County Police. It was initially believed that he was last seen on March 15th, 2022, when he was last seen at home by his roommate. However, it was later determined that the last known sighting of Shaun occurred two days later, at a DC hotel located approximately seven miles away from his residence.

Police have not disclosed who reported seeing Shaun at the Homewood Suites that day. Shaun's family members shared that he was a regular user of Grindr, and they expressed concerns that his disappearance may be connected to someone he met on the app. Police have declined to comment on any information about their investigation into Shaun's case due to its ongoing status.

It does not appear that Shaun vanished on his own accord. Reports state that Shaun was diagnosed with health conditions that require daily medication - which was left behind at the time he vanished. Shaun's cell phone and bank account have also been inactive since the day of his disappearance.

Shaun is described as a white man, 5 foot 7 inches tall, and approximately 145 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Shaun also may go by the names Conrad or Michael.

There is a monetary reward available for information that leads to Shaun's whereabouts. If you have any information that could help the investigation, please call the Arlington County Police tip line at (703) 228-4180 or the DC Police tip line at (202) 727-9099.

Thanks @optiwashere! I get to throw in some fun tidbits for these:

14. Where are they from? What was home like?

This one is interesting because Korydass can split her life (pre-tadpole) into two major “homes.”

The one I’ve already spoken about, her “Homewood” is nowhere special or in particular, nor is it any place in an official setting; the name I gave it was “The Thornlore Woods.” Having a lone dragonborn druid tending to it was probably the closest it got to having any claim to fame. As mentioned in another post, locals started calling it “The Green-Eyed Wood,” because of the number of animals with “strange green eyes” spotted there—all of them just Kory in a druid forms, watching those who passed through.

Kory didn’t have a set place she stayed in the wood, so much as she had stashes of supplies throughout. She knew where all the best nooks to nestle in were, without disturbing any of the animals that already lived there. There were a handful of animals she made regular conversation with: a few corvids, at least one boar, some bears, and the occasional deer. The nearest village was a few hours away by foot, shorter by flight. She’d go into town to barter supplies if she really needed it, and a handful of times helped lost or injured travelers out.

Her first home was her Grandsire’s sea cave, and had Kory been given a choice in the matter she might have never left.

Fayencrux didn’t hoard treasure so much as he had a wealth of books and art and other things that had once adorned his home when he spent his life with his wife. He even has a section of his cave that is built to be suited for an average-sized dragonborn to live in. Kory was hatched, named, and raised by her Grandsire, and spent most of her time there studying from books and learning from him. It wasn’t until later that she realized some of his teachings—particularly on social interactions—were out-of-date. That’s what happens when you’ve spent a few hundred years away from civilization in a prolonged period of mourning/depression.

Speaking of being out-of-touch, Fayencrux took dragonborn being “of age” at fifteen too literally—that was when he dumped Korydass on her own in the wild and forbid her from returning.

(Fayencrux no longer wishes to watch his descendants “wither and die like mayflies,” hence the complete banishment.)

Thus, Kory started her druidic path out of necessity, and kept to it because she found a peace in living as one with nature…

…also it was a great excuse to avoid people.

15. Is your Tav more likely to fight/flight/freeze/fawn?

Social situations: Freeze. Kory feels wildly inadequate when dealing with other humanoids, and when she isn’t completely frozen she defaults to manners that are so formal and also so antiquated that it probably would have been better to have stayed frozen.

In Combat: Fight. If you asked Korydass how she sees herself she would say something to the effect of “Guardian Druid” and she takes that “Guardian” part very seriously. She favors larger animal forms and puts herself between her friends and danger.

18. Where/with whom do they feel safest?

The too-easy “with whom” answer is Karlach, followed by the rest of the companions, because honestly… Kory didn’t have a lot of other contact with people before this whole tadpole shindig.

The more complicated answer is her Grandsire. Had he not thrown her out, Kory would have stayed attached to his hip for life. Not out of a sense of fear of the outside world, bit because he was kind and gentle for being what he was, and did always try to do right by her. His perspective was just… too different for that to work out well. (Korydass is better for having been forced from his side, though it certainly didn’t feel that way to her at the time).

Now, if you want to instantly see Kory happy and at peace, all you need to do is present her with a river deep enough to swim in, preferably near to a waterfall, with large, flat rocks on the shore. I am a sucker for adding lizard-like traits to Kory’s behavior beyond the quirks she’s picked up from other animals, and she will sun herself on rocks, then dive into the river to swim and cool off, then sun herself again and repeat this process for hours. If you don’t interrupt her, she will easily lose the whole day.

Anime Iowa 2022, Friday

Hooray! This year, we were at Anime Iowa from the beginning! We went up Thursday to get settled in the Homewood Suites by Hilton – not the host hotel, but very close to the con (5 minute walk, roughly). Not gonna lie, I’m torn on the idea of staying there the next time we attend Anime Iowa – I loved having the convenience of a mini kitchen area for saving costs on food.

And the walk wasn’t bad, unless you’re bogged down with purchases from the various con vendors. You can see the con hotel from the edge of the parking lot of the Homewood Suites.

On the other hand, it was harder to get going back to the con again sometimes after settling in the room for a meal.

The complementary continental breakfast offered by the hotel was also a strong point in its favor for future Anime Iowa trips.

On Friday, we headed over to the con at about 1130. As expected for a Friday, crowds were somewhat sparse.

Once we collected our badges, we split up – @lechevaliermalfet headed to attend a Gundam panel and I headed toward Main Events for the AnimeIowa Idol Showcase. While I was watching amateur idol groups, @lechevaliermalfet was people-watching, as his panel was unfortunately cancelled.

With time to kill after the idol showcase concluded - well before the Marketplace opened – we hit up the wetland park behind the convention. The area really is quite pretty and its easy to see why it’s a popular place for cosplay photoshoots. It’s also not bad for Pokemon Go.

After the park, we took a lunch break. When we return to the con, we wandered to video gaming. Anime Iowa doesn’t do an arcade, and we didn’t feel like waiting around for a console to open up. But by the time we decided this, the Marketplace had opened, so all was well.

In the marketplace, we made sure to stop by RightStuf’s booth, as they were running giveaways all weekend. But, unlike our last two Anime Iowa trips, we didn’t win anything from Right Stuf this year. Oh well – we tried!

The selection of artists and vendors on hand was nice. You had your usual mix of sword vendors, artists, cosplay dealers, etc. Wild Bill’s was present and we once more realized we’d forgotten our mugs & coupons. Maybe next time?

After wandering the Marketplace – and miraculously not yet spending $$ - we hit up the Right Stuf panel. As usual, they had a demo regarding the superior quality of their packing. As usual, despite being thrown, kicked, etc., the set within the package was unharmed.

We left the panel with a resolve to obtain a copy of Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei after hearing about the efforts the team made to explain all of the gags present in the show. When your reference book is thicker than the actual disc set itself, you know you’re in for an interesting time! Sadly, we had to order online as we didn’t see any copies at the booth during the con.

After Right Stuf, we had plenty of time for a dinner break before returning to the Main Events area of the con for Sh*t Cosplayers Say, which was an 18+ event. Hosted by LaVie Cosplay, who run a podcast with the same title, the panel is styled after Jeopardy. Phil the Fridge, the podcast mascot, was on stage.

Some lucky panel attendees got to play Phil the Fridge, the shape-sorting game for toddlers.

Attendees were treated to categories such as “Iowa Man” and “Drunk O’Clock.” Many anecdotes were shared that sometimes seemed too ridiculous, even though all were true. This is a panel I highly recommend trying to catch if it’s at a con you’re attending.

When the panel released, we went out to join the line for the Drag Show. This is probably where one of my biggest complaints about this year’s Anime Iowa was most evident – masking was not enforced and we were crowded into that room. I don’t believe there were any empty seats once the ones reserved for Sponsors and non-attendees were freed up (they had to be unclaimed for the first 15 minutes, I think, after seating began). Yes, non-attendees. Anime Iowa sold wristbands this year that let folks who didn’t want to attend the con come in for the Drag and Burlesque shows. On the one hand, I understand that this means more money for the con. On the other – especially since the Main Events room for Friday was only half the size that was allotted for Saturday - many con attendees were disappointed because they weren’t able to get into the room for the show.

And it was a spectacular Drag Show. The crowd got into it, sometimes singing along with the music that accompanied a performance, sometimes whooping for a specific move. I was somewhat hoarse by the end, myself.

When we exited the drag show, it was clear that there was no way we would be able to get back into Main Events to attend the burlesque – we would’ve been much further back in line than we had been for the Drag Show. So we went to the Family Programming room for the Art Jam, instead. It was basically quiet time to doodle whatever we wanted.

We probably chilled there for about 30 minutes or so before deciding to call it a night. We took a stroll through the back patio party as we headed back to our hotel. Caution tape and a tent marked a mini dance area, where a DJ was busy entertaining. We also watched a Star Wars cosplayer practicing with his lightsaber. Another joined him for a short duel.

And thus concluded our Friday.

The Power Of Unconditional Love

I've had a few dog's in my life, as the saying goes "a house is not a home without a dog on the floor". But one of the things about owning a dog is that they come and go about every dozen years. The thing that I have learned from each dog is a different way of learning about unconditional love. For this reason, I often wonder why 'dog' spelled in reverse is 'god'.

But as much as a dog can relate to us humans, they are not one of us who are more complex. A dog behaviorist once shared with me that a dog does not look at relationships like humans do. Like, here is what Doctor Gary Chapman shared in his recent newsletter:

"Sometimes we fall into a negative mindset that keeps us from being our best in relationships. Here's an example: "I’ll treat them better when they start treating me better.” Such an attitude misses out on the power of unconditional love. Unconditional love is the choice to love someone else no matter how they treat you.

If you are married, say to your spouse, “I’ve been thinking about our marriage, and I realize that I have loved you conditionally. When you are kind to me, I tend to be kind to you. When you help me, I help you. I think that love requires more than that. I sincerely want to learn to love you no matter what. I want to make a fresh commitment to our marriage. I am going to ask you to give me one suggestion each week for what I can do to make your life better. Whatever you suggest, I’m going to do my best to do it.”

Get a pencil and paper and write down their suggestion. To the best of your ability, do it. If you do, you will be well on the way toward unconditional love."

The thing that makes us different as a Catholic man, as a CMCS-Man, is how we intentionally live out unconditional love through the scriptures, and the Ten Commandments, with our role in the mission of the Church to make disciples.

A Woman's heart should be so hidden in God that a man has to see Him just to find Her.

Women were not created to do what men can do. Women were created to do what men cannot.

Gen. 2:18 - The LORD God said: It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suited to him.

[2:18] Helper suited to him: lit., “a helper in accord with him.” “Helper” need not imply subordination, for God is called a helper (Dt 33:7; Ps 46:2). The language suggests a profound affinity between the man and the woman and a relationship that is supportive and nurturing.

[3:7] Husbands who do not respect their wives will have as little success in prayer as those who, according to Paul, have no love: their prayers will be “a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal” (1 Cor 13:1). Consideration for others is shown as a prerequisite for effective prayer also in Mt 5:23–24; 1 Cor 11:20–22; Jas 4:3. After all, whatever the social position of women in the world and in the family, they are equal recipients of the gift of God’s salvation. Paul is very clear on this point, too (see 1 Cor 11:11–12; Gal 3:28).
