Otakon 2023: Day 3 (Sun)
Sunday got off to a slow start for us. We began with the Otamuseum, since @lechevaliermalfet was curious to see what they had on display from the other years he's attended the con.
Tumblr media
We then parted ways to attend separate panels. I went to the Isekai Like It's 1999 panel. It wasn't a bad panel, though the title wasn't wholly accurate. I did learn about some shows I decided I might check out. And I left with some panel ideas of my own, which made @lechevaliermalfet happy when he heard about it. He's been encouraging me to consider doing panels for years now. I still don't know if I will, but I definitely got the idea for a few research rabbit holes to dive into as a result of attending this one.
Tumblr media
After the panel, we met up and some general wandering around and soaking up con vibes occurred, before again heading to separate panels. I went to the Dubbing Around the World panel, which featured voice actors from the UK, Latin America, and Japan. The moderator was involved in the voice acting scene in the US.
It was a Q&A panel, and even though some of the questions were very typical ("How do you rehearse for a role?" "Do you have a good working relationship with your fellow dubbers?" "What's your favorite line you've ever dubbed?"), the answers were so widely different, it was great.
I always understood intellectually that there were likely different practices between different countries. But actually hearing it broken down in comparisons of rehearsal and prep time, booking time frames, group vs solo recordings...that was very illuminating. This is honestly a panel I would love to see repeated through the years, at any con that can afford to do so.
After the panel, it was time for lunch and the final rounds of Arist Alley. We always buy a ton of prints -this year was no exception. Especially after I found an artist who did FMA artwork based around Nina & Alexander memes. What can I say? I'm a sucker for them.
Tumblr media
After our final shopping rounds and some last-minute pictures of cosplayers, we said goodbye to Otakon.
Tumblr media
And while I didn't screenshot it, DC traffic moved slowly enough that I actually completed the Pokemon Go Community Day tasks during our drive out of the city.
All in all, I did enjoy my time at Otakon. But I don't think it's a con that @lechevaliermalfet and I will be adding to our annual roster. And not just for the expense and additional travel time. There's something about the overall feel of the con as well.
While we appreciated the differences in panel focus, artist alley, and vendor selection compared to ACen, I think we just both still feel that we really only have 1 large con in us per year. And ACen feels more like home to us, in that sense. So Otakon is one that we may do every 5 years or so, just to liven things up.

Very Quick TFCon 2023 Recap!
This past weekend I attended TCCon 2023 in Toronto! This is the first convention I've attended since the start of the pandemic (aside from a couple of very local ones) and it was so good. I love being among my people, the geeks. :) Spouse also attended with me; he is only a TF fan by osmosis (seeing how enthusiastic I am about stuff makes him happy about it too), but he enjoys the vibe of sci-fi and adjacent cons. He also claims to have had a good time.
Before we left, I was concerned about a few things: catching Covid again, boarding the cat, dealing with the disaster that flying in Canada has become lately, etc. We masked up anytime we were in con space, and I remain hopeful that our recent infections acted like a booster against catching it again. If we make it to this Sunday without coming down with it, I'll consider it a success.
Before I have to go to work tomorrow, I wanted to get my thoughts down about how the con went: the amazing, the good, and the disappointing.
The Amazing
Friends. Being able to catch up with (and in some cases meet!) other TF fans who I've chatted with online over the years is always amazing. I honestly don't want to start naming names because then I'll forget someone and feel bad. There is something special about being able to put a face to an online name.
If you were there and I missed you, I am so sorry. I tried, I honestly did. But I am an incredibly awkwardly shy potato in person, and I could only shove myself out of my introvert shell so much to message people and say "LET'S MEET NOW." Sometimes I depend on other people to say "PIPER! LET'S MEET NOW" because otherwise I dither and dither until the weekend is over and the chance is gone. :(
Thank you to everyone who put up with me; I love you guys. <3
The Pros. I steeled myself and went to the three pros who I wanted to talk to: Alex Milne, James Roberts, and Jack Lawrence. Alex was selling copies of Hot Motor Oil (omg book number two is INSANE and I cackled over it repeatedly), so while he was sketching in my copy I was able to thank him for the commission he did for me a while back. He said some very nice things about my choice! but it's important for me to thank people in person for the commissions they do for me. :3 Same thing with Jack; I got a commission from him just a little while ago, and I LOVE it. He was also very nice, even though I was only at his table to thank him and not buy anything. >.> (Next time I need to bring larger print protectors; his prints were GORGEOUS but there was no way I'd be able to get them home safely.)
And I bought some scripts from James; I've been dying to read the annotated ones because I am interested in writing my own scripts, and I wanted to see how he put his together and the thoughts behind them. I was able to tell him about how it was fanfic that led me to MTMTE which led me back into the TF fandom after a 25+ year absence, and he was really happy to hear that. (And commented about how the message that fanfic can bring in new fans needs to get back to the IP holders...)
The Costumes. Briefly, AMAZING costumes this year. I got some good pictures of some of them, but the creativity out there is fantastic.
The Good.
The Loot. I got a decent amount of stuff this year, and thanks to Spouse tagging along I was able to bring back a bit more than usual. And some of the stuff was for him, so he got something out of it too. :3
Tumblr media
Non-TF Meetups. By happenstance, a coworker of mine lives in the area, as does some WoW guildies that Spouse knows. We'd never met any of these people in person, so we made time for that and I'm happy we did. Also, not having to go downtown? Priceless. XD
Cat Boarding. We boarded our new cat while we were away, and it went well! She is very adaptable, and I'm glad that they liked her. This was sort of a test run for longer vacations, and now I feel comfortable leaving her there for longer periods of time.
The Disappointing
The Pros I Didn't Meet. See: awkward potato. I did want to say hello Frank Todaro (he has a very good moustache by the way) and tell him in person how much I enjoyed his work on WFC (as Starscream and Rattrap - but Starscream specifically was great), but there was always someone at his table when I went by, and I'm an awkward potato, and I (?) didn't really want an autograph but felt bad just going and talking to him without buying something like I did to Jack, so I didn't talk to him. And David Kaye ALWAYS had a huge lineup so that was totally out.
No Toyhax? I was hoping that Toyhax would be there so I could buy some decals for the car (ones I ALMOST bought in 2019 but didn't, and I've regretted it ever since.) But they were not at the con. (I also kind of wanted some other sticker sets.) I've checked their website and I think the car decals in 2019 were being sold by someone just sharing their table but I can't remember who, so - blah. Too bad.
Travel Shenanigans. It all worked out in the end, but our trip to Toronto was a little... interesting thanks to some computer glitches with the airline. It added stress to me that I didn't need.
Writing. Hahhahahaaa! No writing was done over the weekend. Zero words written. I was either too busy, or too tired. :/
Health Issues. I won't get into it much here, but attending the convention made me realize that I am still suffering some effects from the Covid infection I had at the end of May. I have a doctor's appointment in a few weeks so I can let her know about it, but we'll see if there's anything they can actually do. -.-;
And that was TFCon 2023! I hope I can attend again next year; this really was a great experience.

Mackenyu at Comic Con Arabia - Jeddah 1-12-2023
A memory to keep <3
Well they announced that he was coming only like 5 days before!! I wasn’t sure if I can go or not, my daughter saw my picture with him in Kuwait and kept telling me that she wants to have a picture with him too (like she is almost 5 only)
It was my birthday , I had work in the morning then my daughter planned a party for me (which was so cute) so until around 6pm I wasn't sure if we can make it but I was like what we have to lose and the place was near my house so I took her around 8pm, when we arrived he was on the stage so we got to go around the place a little bit till he went to the booth
we lined around 9 pm, it wasn't really a long line luckily, I bought 2 tickets, one for her and one for us
the first thing when we enter Mackenyu was like "awww so adorable" ^^ we said hi and I told him about her seeing my picture with him , he got excited then he was like "so 2 pictures one for her and one for you" I told him I want her in my picture too and he was like "sure" he took my phone and I carried her to pose he was like "you are out of the frame come closer" XD and he counted 3 2 and took the picture
Tumblr media
Next he moved from the table all the way to the background like let’s take the picture there then kneeled to take a proper selfie with her he made a sound like "aaaaaa" to make her smile until she giggly smiled then he snapped the picture XD (yup I have a very shy daughter ^^;)
Tumblr media
He told me that she's so cute and I'm so lucky to have her, I was like "I know thank you" then he told me if the posters prepared by the staff for the signature were okay to be the ones signed, I told him yeah it was totally fine, he signed 2 posters and gave them to me, I told him thank you for coming to jeddah and he said no problem next he waved byebye to my daughter and she waved back then we left ^^
I don't know what exactly happened to him in the 1st day but I'm glad I saw that side of him and I hope seeing my daughter gave him some positive energy, that moment I felt glad that I went ^^
Oh and my daughter after we went out was like is he coming to our house too? XD I was like no he won’t , guess we should invite him next time XD

Anime Magic 2023: Saturday
Saturday morning kicked off with breakfast in @shbumi's room, then she and I did some PoGo in the area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At about 1040, we headed toward the hotel ballroom to join the line for Drag Show.
Tumblr media
It seemed odd to be going to a drag event in the morning, but apparently Oriana requested it when scheduling. There were some technical hiccups and delays, so the show proper (which was scheduled at 1100) didn't start until approximately 1115.
And what a show it was! As always, a kickass event. I apologize for any blurriness to the photos, but it definitely was a great time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the drag show, we stuck around for an Iaido demonstration and discussion. @lechevaliermalfet got to go onstage for some hands-on work while @shbumi and I remained in the audience, listening as the presenter explained what the groups on stage were doing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Iaido, it was time for some lunch. And then for shopping!
We made sure to make a pit stop at @artbyquinton's booth. It's always great to see what new stuff he's rolling out and it's also a good chance to catch up if we haven't seen him for awhile.
After his booth, we checked out the other offerings on display from various artists and dealers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It may seem a strange thing to say, but in some ways, the artist alley and dealer hall feel too big for a con the size of Anime Magic. Like, I love having so many booths to visit. But I also don't budget for AM the same way I would for say, ACen or Otakon, in terms of money for the exhibit hall. I budget less, since the event is smaller. So then I feel bad when I see the amount of cool stuff on hand. There were plenty of artists where I ended up grabbing business cards to hopefully support them at a later time.
After shopping, it was getting on late afternoon and it was finally time for another panel: The Best of Steampunk Anime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was a cool panel, and it was presented by a member of the Chicago Steampunk Exposition team. So you know he knew his stuff. First, we were given a short background on steampunk, then divided into small groups to brainstorm anime we thought *might* be on the list that our presenter intended to talk about. Each group offered up a title, and we ranked what was offered.
And then, we began to review this list by CBR. For each title offered, we had some discussion as to why CBR included it...and why our presenter would or wouldn't include it in his own list.
I think I had more fun and learned more in this panel than I have in almost every other steampunk-themed panel I've attended.
After the panel, we ordered dinner from Giordano's, but knew we would have an hour to kill before it arrived. So @lechevaliermalfet and I checked out the itasha car show while @shbumi chilled in her room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I loved wandering the cars and looking at the different wrap jobs, even if I didn't always know the show being represented.
I also tried not to pay too much attention to Tattoo Alley, which was right next door. See, I had considered getting a tattoo during AM 2022 but decided against it. And this year, I had planned to get one if the tattoo artist returned - but you aren't supposed to get a tattoo during pregnancy. So I just looked at the increased number of options and hey, we'll see. Maybe if we attend AM 2024, I'll get one. Next year's con schedule is a bit up in the air, since we'll have an infant to consider.
Tumblr media
We grabbed some drinks and extra snacks from the Hello Tokyo booth (and got some pocky balloons) and then headed back to the hotel for dinner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After dinner, we went down to the Anime Singalong Dance Party with Kohei. It was scheduled for 2100, but technical issues meant that it ran late. As on Friday, it was great to just sing and dance along to anime OPs with a bunch of other nerds.
Tumblr media
Kohei didn't get to put on as long of a show as Friday night due to the tech issues, as there was a concert scheduled immediately after him.
Crunk Witch are a married couple who go for an electro-pop sound. They did some kickass 80s covers during their show. Annnd they also hit tech issues. Really, this seems to be a recurring thing for AM.
Tumblr media
Oh! and on a random note, I got a free glow bracelet from the Atlas cosplayer, who was hanging out just outside of the concert.
Tumblr media
I don't expect free stuff from cosplayers, for obvious reasons, so it was cool to get something.
I also grabbed a Crunk Witch CD after the concert. There was a dance scheduled for after Crunk Witch, but for us, it was time to call it a night. We were wiped.

i think i am going to make a pay what you want digital zine this year for people who want to get into making little artist alley knick knacks like keychains and stickers and enamel pins, cuz i get a lot of asks about that and i think it would be nice to put my design skills to the test and have it all in one place! that being said, what kind of questions do y'all have about this stuff that you would want answered? everything from packaging to shipping to the products themselves, what would you guys want in there? keep in mind i have only sold on etsy myself and a couple craft shows, so i can't give much advise about personal storefronts.
please put them in the replies on this post so it's all in one place!

Pop Up Comfestcon Kuwait
28-29/9/2023
Yup basically going for Mackenyu and here is to record my memories ^^
At the beginning I was hesitating if I should go or no as I know him as a Japanese actor but I wasn't closely following his projects
But seeing how much he's growing I felt like it's a once in a life opportunity so I decided to go
I arrived at Kuwait on 28 of sep around 4 pm so I missed the first photo session with him
I was able to see him talks on the stage which was around 6:30 pm
It was funny he suddenly entered without announcement, loved his way of pronouncing the Arabic food ^^ and it was a nice chat with Yao Kazuki, tbh he was goofing, joking and laughing a lot like his Japanese interviews, he must felt comfortable being with another Japanese ^^
Tumblr media
Next I lined up for the signing session, reached at around 8:30 pm, they told me I need to have something for him to sign on and I was like what? I thought he will give a signed photo of him!!! so yeah rushed to buy a Zoro cardboard for him to sign and came back, glad they didn't ask me to line up again that was so nice of them ;~; and finally entered and saw him so close ;^; he is so white !! that was my first impression XD
idk he seemed like non talkative person, the staff was the one who would give him the objects to sign, not us so he took the board and started signing just like that, I tried to start a convo like "hi how are you?" then paused, for a moment I thought he won't reply but he finally responded with "hey I'm good" "I came from Saudi Arabia for you" he finally looked at me with "oh" smiled and "thanks"
Tumblr media
Next day, I arrived around 2 pm , I really love Kuwaiti people ;^; <3 they were like welcoming me knowing I'm from Saudi by the way I'm talking XD
Tumblr media
I lined up around 2:45 pm for the photo session, my turn was at 4:15 pm , this time they told us no chatting and of course no phones allowed, when I entered he looked me in the eyes, stared, smiled and welcomed me! all I was able to tell him was “Glad you made it back from the mall” he said “yeah” with a chuckle /based on his ig story/, I think he thought he saw me before hence the staring and I should've had re-introduced myself but I got flustered , wanted to take the photo and get out immediately 😂 I couldn't look him in the eyes again, I only said "thanks" and I left shaking with my heart beating so fast (I was like wth that's came out of no where!!!)
Tumblr media
Then I went sitting for the cosplay run /which was fun/ while waiting for the signing session again, Mackenyu suddenly went on the stage even though he wasn't supposed to that day, to announce that he will be extending his photo session which was so nice of him ^^ the funny thing he did Buggy OPLA's hand movement to silence the crowd from screaming for him to talk 😂
Tumblr media
I lined up at 7 pm and reached by 7:30 pm, this time the line moved fast so I knew they were rushing things , I intended to re-intoduce my self but decided to just thanks him for coming, it was like:
“ほんとに楽しかった” .。. o(≧▽≦)o .。. and he spread his arms cheerfully saying “よかった”╰(´︶`)╯"お疲れ様でした" ^^♡ and I left, this time he signed my photograph with him
lastly after he finished his session we said byebye while he was leaving ^^
Tumblr media
Some end rumbling:
-Surprisingly I was staying at the same hotel with some of the fest guests, it was "Raddison Blue" I got to see Yao Kazuki and the foreign staff that were organizing Mackenyu sessions
-The first night Mackenyu went to the ship restaurant named "Al Boom Steak &Seafood" /based on the guy's ig who had dinner with him, funny I wanted to dine there that night but decided last minute to dine there the next night 😂
btw the resturant is so nice and the steak is delicious I loved it, and the ship itself you feel like it was really a one piece trip ~
Tumblr media
-The second night Mackenyu posted the advanced birthday cake and it looked like the table is in the restaurant at the hotel named "Peacock Chinese", I passed by it that night but didn't enter 😂
-I was reading some reports in how the fans felt Mackenyu was uncomfortable and the staff was too strict, being a fan of Jpop and going to some of their events that do have a lot of rules, I felt that was totally normal , like I always do with these, I tried to have the best time and live in the moment without causing too much trouble to the ones working there and tbh I'm contented with this experience ^^
