His Truth by Riley Hart They were only kids when they met for the first time. Leo Mancini was the son of a judge. Roman Cipriani the son of a criminal. So different, yet they fell in love--but before they could make their dreams come true, their future was viciously stolen and their lives changed forever. Roman has spent the last twelve years repressing the trauma in his past. Leo won't let himself forget what happened because he doesn't ever want to be that person again. But in that split second when their eyes meet again, everything changes. They aren't kids anymore though, and a trauma like Roman suffered doesn't just go away. Now, can the two of them escape their demons before they destroy Roman and Leo a second time?

Reading update, part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Perplexing Theft of the Jewel in the Crown by Vaseem Khan - 4/5 stars
All the Way Happy by Kit Coltrane - DNF
Couldn't get past the fact that it was blatantly Drarry fanfiction that had had the serial numbers filed off. It was seriously distracting. I don't have an issue with fic authors doing that (I'M ONE OF THEM), but this read like a find and replace had been done on the names, and nothing else had been changed. If the prose hadn't been so overwrought I might have enjoyed it, but the combination of Drarry AU + purple prose was just too cringey for me.
Total Creative Control by Joanna Chambers and Sally Malcolm - 5/5 stars
Ahhhhh I loved this book. I've only read Chambers's historical fiction so I was curious what this would be like, and it was so good. So so good.
Also, sometimes my wife says stuff and I'm like 'that's not a real thing that English people say, that's probably some weird thing her family says.' But then I'll read it in a book by an English person and I am schooled. Anyway that happened several times in this book.
The Name Bearer by Natalia Hernandez - DNF
I don't mind a slow-paced book but there was just so much info dumping in the first chapter, when chapter 2 started with more info dumping, I gave up.
Crossroads by Riley Hart - DNF
This book started with a description of the main character's apartment. There wasn't anything special about it, nor was it described in a unique way. I DNFed halfway through page 2. I know I have another Riley Hart book sitting in my TBR, which I will be digging out bringing to my local bookstore's used book buyback.
Godkiller by Hannah Kaner - 4.5/5 stars
Did Not Expect to enjoy this one. I got this in an IllumiCrate and I just remember the little blurby thing you get where the author talks about the book saying something about how she loves angry women. I'm over it. Angry is not a personality! Stop writing women who are angry and thinking you've written a well-rounded character!
But actually this book was really good! Predictable, but a good read. Unusually, my favorite character was the child. It helped that she had an adorable hare/bird/deer god of white lies following her around.
Tommy Cabot Was Here by Cat Sebastian - 5/5 stars
I love Sebastian's regency romances but I might love this series more. This is a very, very quick read (right around 100 pages) but she's just so good at creating these wonderful, fully-realized characters that you love from the first sentence.
As You Walk on By by Julian Winters - 2/5 stars
So at this point I think I have to concede that Julian Winters is not the author for me. He's constantly lauded as this wonderful writer whose books will make you smile for days. This is the third one I've read and I nearly DNFed it. The only thing that kept me going, ironically, was that I really liked the love interest and was rooting for them to get together. Typically I find the romances in Julian Winters books to be very flat and un-swoony. This one was actually quite nice though.
But the main character. Jesus Christ. He's SO annoying. Him and his shitty BFF who he falls out with deserve each other, honestly. There's only so many times I can sympathize with you because you have a comfortable, middle-class life and you go to a fancy pants private school, but waaaaah sometimes your friends don't say exactly the right thing about you being queer. Also having your MC tell the teenage girl who gets slut-shamed, gossiped about, and sexually harassed everywhere she goes that actually she doesn't have it as bad because she's white was...an interesting touch.
And idk if the Youth actually act and talk the way the teenagers do in this book, but if they do, I'm very glad I don't know any teenagers.
Why did I rate this book 2 stars instead of 1? Oh! I really liked Luca. He deserved a better book. And I liked River a lot, too. And the fact that this was clearly a take on The Breakfast Club was fun, just...not executed as well as I would have liked.

Playing for Keeps (book 2): False Start by Riley Hart & Neve Wilder
If only my feelings were as fake as this "relationship" with my former teammate.
CULLEN: I’ve been the NFL’s “problem child” since my rookie year. If there’s trouble, I’ll find it.
But my biggest weakness has always been Houston McRae. We were secretly together in college before it blew up in our faces.
So, when I see him again years later, you’d think I’d know better than to end up in an airport bathroom stall tearing his clothes off.
To make matters worse, because of mistakes I’ve made, I find out afterward I’m being traded… to Denver.
Where Houston lives. Because of course.
I’m not taking responsibility for the two of us ending up in a fake relationship. That’s all on him, but I can’t pretend I won’t enjoy it. As long as I don’t let myself fall for him again, I’ll be fine, right?
HOUSTON: I lived, breathed, and slept football until an injury sidelined me for life. Now I’m solely focused on finding my place again… until Cullen Atwood walks back into my life and tempts me into an airport bathroom stall, where every ounce of passion for him I thought I’d buried returns with a vengeance.
Now he’s playing for the Rush…
And staying in my apartment.
And did I mention he’s also my fake boyfriend who makes it clear he still wants me every chance he gets?
I’ve got my future to think about, though, and we’re one wrong move from becoming a tabloid headline. I can’t afford to think of Cullen as anything more than a casual hook-up.
So why do I keep wishing this relationship was real?
False Start is a low angst, high-heat sports romance in the Playing for Keeps series.

My Review: 5/5 Stars
When Cullen and Houston first got together, they were young and in college working toward their dreams to play in the NFL. But at that time, coming out and playing professionally wasn't exactly easy or the thing to do. Instead of trying to make a go for it, they break one another hearts. Years have passed, and neither have truly gotten over the other. Not that either would admit it. And Cullen is becoming the problem child of the NFL. And his latest stunt changes everything. After running into Houston for the first time in a long time, it leads to a hook up and so many thoughts later. Head not in the game, Cullen makes a bad decision that leads to him being outed. Then traded. But perhaps it was a blessing in disguise, because he ends up in Denver. Right where Houston is. Houston is no longer playing in the NFL after an injury but he has stuck around near his team, his family, and his baby brother who is playing on his old team. When Cullen appears back in his life, he tries everything to stay away. But when the two of them are caught in a compromising position, and Cullen is getting hit with the blame, Houston blurts out they are in a relationship. Now they'll have to navigate a "fake" relationship that feels more and more real every day. This was definitely a fun fake relationship trope story! Cullen and Houston have great chemistry and banter. They were great together and you just want to shake them for being so silly and not realizing that the other was still in love with them and that they were meant to be and figure out a way to make it work. Even when their careers were leading in different directions. This has been a fun series so far and I'm hoping for more!

TROY Sometimes I want to punch that smirk off Atlas McCallister’s pretty face. He’s cocky. A troublemaker. A pain. And, unfortunately, my stepbrother. We’ve been fire and kerosene since our parents got together, and to keep from exploding into fistfights, we’ve used challenges, dares, and bets to battle out our differences. Our past bets have been a little inappropriate—scandalous, even—but…

Riley Hart:
The Vers Podcast series (1,2,3,4).
M-M. Modern. Some celebrity. Virgin. Best friends who do a podcast. Lead who used to be a sex worker. One lead has a bias against potential partners who don't work for whatever reason. Not-thin lead. Acknowledges poly, enby, asexual spectrum, they-them pronouns, side, & trans. Lead who's probably demi-ro. Indirect acknowledgement of the digestive system in one book; much more robust discussion in another of how anal sex can get messy, including that some 'cleaning' can be harmful & there can also be pressure to restrict eating. Discussion of who tops - & it's not clear who's oldest or biggest - at least once; all leads are vers; discussion of "top privilege and bottom shaming" & challenging the assumption that "all twinks must be bottoms and bears are likely tops" in book 4. Sightly unpolished style at times. Modern. Quite nice. Readable. Look out for a future story about Morgan (bbf of one of the 4th pair & possibly part of the upcoming Swift series); ditto Eliot's bff, Vaughn, unless I've forgotten a reason he wouldn't need a new partner, & Gael, a new adult who's a friend of the book 4 leads through the local LGBTQIA+ centre, all of whom would have at least a tangential link to these.
CW: work having control of one's life; cheating; partner cheating with one's friend; not telling a potential sex partner one's in an open relationship; deceased parent; bad parents; becoming lonely because friends are coupled up; secrets; physical preventing someone (who's naked) from leaving a conversation; misusing sexual attraction to steal money; breakup; public proposal; unstable housing situation; attempt to abuse insecure housing situation; over-exercising due to low self-esteem; low self-esteem; overly-careful dieting; plastic surgery; historic bullying about one's weight; dealing with societal racism; relocating for work; long-distance relationship; losing a job before it starts; crash; hospitalisation; personal issues to do with weight; bigoted behaviour; people with good intentions still being harmful; speeding; therapy; societal & internalised fatphobia; different moral viewpoints; getting engaged at someone's wedding.

Married to My Best Friend by Riley Hart
Tumblr media
Read time: 1 Day Rating: 4/5 Stars
The Quote: “How do I go about getting my card?” “Queer people are magic, baby. We just know. It’ll arrive via unicorn in ten business days.” — Caden and Alex
Warnings: Implied Homophobia
Married to my Best Friend follows Alex Bailey and Caden Hall on their story of a drunken marriage in Vegas, FriendsWhoAreMarriedMoon in Puerto Vallarta and Caden's world-shaking realisation. Alex and Caden are playing on a couple of tropes tied to unrequited love, queer identity and childhood emotional trauma(? look some people should never get married). That may sound heavy but it isn't Riley Hart can play for keeps and through emotional haymakers but that isn't her game here this is just short, fun and kinda sweet. I do wish it was longer, drawn out their tension deserved it.
The prologue begins when they are twelve with Caden introducing them, their relationship and his own circumstances. Moves to them at fourteen when Edward Hall makes some homophobic comments to Caden about Alex and we are shown just how close Caden and Alex are. And ends with them at sixteen Alex experimenting with his sexuality, hurting them in the process and containing the line “Promise me something… that you won’t ever lie to me again, and that we’ll always be best friends, no matter what.” (Caden). Honestly, it's a simple but effective prologue that tells the reader much about their childhoods and bond. I appreciate the way the whole book is written. It feels like they are walking toward each other on a tightrope despite their promises of friendship for life. What creates that tightrope is the damage that losing each would do psychologically. Do we know where this is going? Yeah but it's the ride.
The aborted marriage between Jack and Alex is mutual and perfectly timed, they were both in love with others and it feels like they were carrying to distract themselves from their unrequited attraction. We really never get a good read on Jack with Alex only thinking about Caden and his own doubts and Caden his misunderstood jealously. I can see Jack turning up in his own novella at some point. One of the most interesting in the story for me is Gladys, the woman Alex and Caden meet on the plane. Her story and experiences are so painful but I appreciate her message, one that Caden takes to heart. The whole way Caden comes to his realisation is amusing to me, he's a possessive b**tard.
Despite the short length I still want to add quotes. Including Gladys' story.
“I am. I’m an independent woman.” She smiled. “And I’m glad… that the wedding didn’t happen. Not everyone has a choice or is lucky enough to find the person they’re meant to be with, and even if they do, they don’t always get them. I didn’t end up with the love of my life… his name was Harry. His dad used to work for mine. We were different, and back then, those differences mattered more than they do now— class and such. My family came from money, and his didn’t. My parents caught us together and forced me to break it off with him. I was devastated, but… girls like me just didn’t disobey their parents back then. “I ended up in a… situation, if you know what I mean. It happened before we broke up. We were going to run away together. I packed a bag and went to meet him, but Harry didn’t show up. He’d been hit by a car and didn’t survive. It just about killed me.” She wiped a tear from her eye. “Anyway, my parents wanted to send me away to deal with my situation, and I went, but didn’t do what they wanted. I raised our baby girl on my own and told her all about her daddy.” — I know this is a super long quote but I love Gladys' story. She is one of those rare female characters in an mm romance story who is not related to either of the protagonists but cannot be ignored. She has her own story and message. The start of this is in reaction to Caden asking her "Are you traveling her alone?" (Gladys)
I straightened my arm, looked at the band on my finger. I was married. To Alex. My Alex. I smiled. Why the fuck I was smiling, I didn’t know, but I couldn’t stop myself. My mouth suddenly had a mind of its own, and the bastard was stubborn, because no matter how many times I tried to frown or relax, it didn’t work. — This is a sweet moment for me. This is the start of Caden's realisation. He's just staring at his ugly ass wedding ring and starting to hope it was real. (Caden)
“Did you like it? Kissing me?” “I liked it so much, I ache to do it again.” His response stole my damn breath. I didn’t know what to do, what to think. This would likely backfire big-time. There were so many reasons why I shouldn’t consider this… but it was Caden. — Not the only time Caden makes Alex want to decide to throw caution to the wind and risk their friendship. But this is most tempting. This is after Caden made his move in a serious way. It's the last line that makes this. (Alex and Caden)

Quote:
"I think people worry too much about everyone being the same, or like, their feelings are the only right feelings, ya know? Like however I feel has to be how you feel, or it’s wrong or stupid. But really, we’re all unique, and most emotions, experiences, thoughts, being left out or not, or lonely or not, or how we grieve or not—whatever the situation—those can’t be wrong because they’re part of being human, and no two experiences are the same." - Milo in Riley Hart's "Boyfriend goals"

Heart2Heart: A Charity Anthology - Vol. 5 - Edited by Leslie Copeland
My Thoughts
I've seen a few of these floating around my suggestions on Kindle, and have been intrigued for a while. As such, you would think I would start with the first volume. But of course I didn't - I had to be contrary! So here we are, beginning this short story anthology adventure with volume 5!
With short story anthologies, there's always a risk of disliking some stories over the others. With this one, I can honestly say this was not the case for me! I really did enjoy them all! These stories ran me through every emotion - it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, though the happy endings were very heavily implied, and appreciated.
It was lovely to see glimpses into various stories, characters, and places. Each story took the Never Have I Ever challenge and spun it into its own beautiful little world. Honestly, I wanted more! I wanted to see these stories for farther, see where they could go beyond the constraints of the anthology. A few of the stories had very open-ended endings which could lend to this, but I am also perfectly happy imaging them all on my own!
Overall, I am truly pleased I picked up this anthology. I got so many wonderful stories, and now have a whole list of authors to check out for further reading! I will absolutely be checking out the other Heart2Heart anthologies, as well! How can I not?
