Two sisters, Two Houses, one bond, different Generations 🇪🇸🇬🇧
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve seen many parallels when it comes to the House of Borbón and the House of Windsor. Many say that they remind them of the cheeky Princess Margaret and the dutiful Queen Elizabeth II. As someone who is fascinated with Monarchies and the deeply rooted history that lies between the great pillars of the palaces I find that I too see many similarities. It is no secret that Princess Margaret was seen as a rebel to the press, that she was a wild child (in a a good way) In almost every personal photograph that the British Royals took there Margaret was with her cheeky smile and paddle blue eyes. Elizabeth, once heir to the throne of the most well known Monarchy in the world, Longest Reigning Queen of the United Kingdom was the most dutiful, the pride her father carried in his heart.
Princess Leonor, princess of Asturias, Heir to the throne of Spain often reminds me of a young teenage Elizabeth. The way Leonor Carries herself at times, shy, yet dutiful. Meek yet powerful. The dedication that Leonor and Elizabeth both contribute and contributed to there own monarchies is impeccable. And I can only hope that one day Leonor makes a mark in her own history book. The close knitted relationship that both heirs share with there fathers, both kings respectfully is unique and the most precious. Princess Margaret’s life was one of great sacrifices, she was denied the marriage she yearned for by her very own sister. She was in a marriage she was not happy with, often resulting in more press awareness of her. But through it all…she stuck by her older sister. The duty her father instilled in her, duty to the crown surpassed every decision she made. We see this same dedication with Infanta Sofía who is always behind her sister, serving the crown with respect and duty only a daughter of a monarch can possess. Elizabeth and Margaret were the delight of the United Kingdom in there time. Leonor and Sofía are our own delight. From the very moment Leonor stood on that podium to read the constitution of Spain Sofía wasn’t far, sitting with her mother, eyes alight and pride on her face. You can almost find that face after every one of Leonor’s speeches. They have shown Spain that they are a United force, by doing solos together and serving the crown. I hope that as time goes on and the sisters delve into there own paths that they will keep hold of the strong bond. And I believe that they will. This is my own personal opinion and my own thoughts. Hopefully this analysis of my favorite royal sisters makes sense. I have great hope for what lies ahead for the Borbón girls, and cannot wait to see what it is.

"The Family of Philip, Duke of Parma", 1755, Guiseppe Baldrighi, Galleria Nazionale, Parma.
Felipe de Borbón y Farnesio was the Duke of Parma from 1748 to 1765, and also the subject of one of my favourite portraits of the whole 18th century (from a set of 3, I will post those another time). The second son of King Philip V of Spain and Elisabeth Farnese, he became the Duke of Parma, that had been ruled by his mother's family for generations, via the Teatry of Aux-la-Chapelle in 1748, founding the House of Bourbon-Parma.
In this portrait we can see Philip sitting next to his wife Louise Elisabeth of France, the eldest daughter of Louis XV of France. They didn't have happy marriage, and she died of smallpox in 1759 at 32 years old.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Standing behind them there's their daughter Isabella of Parma, here wearing a lilac robe de cour, she would later marry Marie Antoinette's older brother, Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, and would become very close (some people think that suspiciously close) to her sister in law Maria Christina. She died of smallpox after a difficult birth followed closely by two miscarriages at the age of 21.
Tumblr media
At the front there are the Ferdinand (later Duke of Parma) and Maria Luisa (future wife of Charles IV and then Queen of Spain, yeah her cousin because of course).
At the front there's Ferdinand and Maria Luisa (aren't they the CUTEST?!). Both of them were born in 1751, and she's keeping his toy sword away from him, playing and pissing him off, like all siblings should. Ferdinand would become the Duke of Parma in 1765 at 14 years old and be later married to his bother in law's sister Maria Amalia of Austria. In 1801 he ceded the Duchy of Parma to France in the Treaty of Aranjuez.
Maria Luisa of Parma would become the Queen of Spain since she married Charles, then Prince of Asturias in 1765. He was mainly interested in hunting and mechanics and she in state affairs, so she became an influential and dominant figure in court. If this telenovela is not already sad enough for you, her father died unexpectedly in 1765 in Alessandria after having accompanied her to sail for Spain to be married to the Infante Charles.
Tumblr media
There's also the profile figure of Marie Catherine de Bassecourt y Thieulaine the children's governess. She was a maid of honour of Phiilip's mother Elisabeth Farnese, and she joined Maria Luisa when she went to Spain and remained in the Spanish court since then. In 1765 Philip gave her the title of Marchese of Borghetto, thanking her services and merits.
Tumblr media
And finally, some pets and music. Didn't find anything about the dog nor the bird BUT I love them both. Especially the super fancy collar.

$35 M. Velázquez Portrait of Spanish Queen Pulled By Sotheby’s – ARTnews.com
A Diego Velázquez portrait of Spanish Queen Isabel de Borbón, which was expected to break the artist’s previous records, was quietly withdrawn from auction by Sotheby’s in New York.
The court painting, which has been owned by a private family trust in the US since 1978, was pulled due to “ongoing discussions” on behalf of the sellers. The painting did not appear in the auction house’s digital sales catalogue released on December 21.
There is speculation that a US museum may have put in an offer, however, Sotheby’s declined to comment, the Art Newspaper reported Friday. The 1620s painting was guaranteed by the auction house at $35 million in its upcoming Old Master sale on February 1.
The Isabel de Borbon portrait could be related to a famed Velázquez painting of her husband Philip IV held by the Prado in Madrid. It was taken from the Spanish royal collection in Madrid during Napoleon’s 1808 invasion and later appeared in a French noble collection in 1838. It eventually came into the hands of British banker and book collector Henry Huth. His relatives held it until 1950, when the piece was last at auction.
High-quality works by Velázquez are typically found in royal or museum collections and are rarely sold in public auctions. The price tag and good condition reflect this singularity. If sold, the work would more than double the 17th-century Spanish painter’s current $16.9 million auction record.  ...

So.. The Cure played in a festival last Saturday (?) and I couldn't attend because economy sucks and I'm almost broke (already lost my chance to see Billy Idol as well 😔😭) but photos appeared all over social media -videos too- and I can't stop smiling at Robert's T-shirt with our Sun in it (a version wearing make up like his, but it is still our Sun)
Tumblr media
So I decided to share a fun fact about out flag.
When you grow up in Argentina one of the first stories about the creation of our flag is that Manuel Belgrano was looking up at the sky and that inspired him to make it like that.
In case you don't know our flag, here it is:
Tumblr media
Of course, this is a lie.
Not only our official first flag wasn't like this (it was 2 squares put together, one sky-blue and another one white) but the story is quite different.
The main reason why Belgrano was asked to create a flag was because it was the time of the Revolution (circa 1810) and it was impossible to identify our people -especially soldiers- from those that still answered to Spain. (Reason why San Martín also created the uniform for his soldiers, the Granaderos)
The Sky-blue and white came from the House of Borbón (the royal bloodline that rules Spain). But the most interesting thing is the Sun.
Belgrano put the Sun because it was the Inca's god. He wanted to replace the Spanish King with an Inca one. Cool. Of course no-one liked the idea, but the symbol of the Sun-god still remains.

It’s the fact that there actually is a collectors coin for Leonor’s birthday 😭😭 is 🇪🇸 or the original anon got a secret schedule from casareal? 😭😭 honestly I needed a good laugh today and that was hilarious to wake up to. Great work guys! All in all the coin looks really great!! Secondly here is my question, if you could meet any Spanish royal, from any period, could be Isabel of Castile or even Leonor, spend a week with them and ask all the questions you could…who would you pick? Let’s time travel just a bit. I think I would go with Isabel of Castile. Or I would see Charles, the last king of the Habsburgs in Spain before the house of Borbón. Would have liked to see how all that went down.
That is such a coincidence!!! Casa real has been feeding us a lot of good Leonor content lately and this whole thing is like the biggest coincidence like ever!
I think that I would definitely go back to see Catherine of Aragon and her sister Joanna and to give both of them a BIG BIG BIG hug because they honestly deserve it and I would definitely give Joanna some anxiety meds lol. Also seeing Charles II sounds fun too. He was one of the worst cases of inbreeding in the Hapsburgs and maybe in all of the royal history of Europe and I would love to see how he functions daily and to accurately see how messed up he was because he was REALLY messed up.
Thank you for asking and new chapters of WOTC are coming soon!

Santillana del Mar, Spain (No. 17)
Casa de los Hombrones or Casa de los Villa. It is located next to the so-called house of Leonor de la Vega, on Canton Street. It is a house built between the xv and the xvii. It was given this name by the two mustachioed knights who hold the huge baroque shield of the façade, coat of arms of the Villa.
House of Polanco and Lasso de la Vega or House of Leonor de la Vega. It is located on the street of the canton. It is from the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries built by Juan de Polanco. According to tradition, Leonor de la Vega, mother of the first Marquis of Santillana, lived in this building. On the façade you can see three Gothic shields of the Polanco-Lasso de la Vega alliance.
Torre del Merino or La Torrona. It is located in the old market square, today Ramón Pelayo. It is a tower of the fourteenth century, topped by battlements. It is so called because it is the place where the merino, an official who represented the king, dwelt.
Torre de don Borja or Santillana Foundation. It is in the Plaza de Ramón Pelayo. Although it must have had medieval origin, the part preserved and restored seems to be from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. On the sides of the parapet is a shield with the coat of arms of the Barreda. It has an interior courtyard that joins the two volumes. It owes its name to Don Francisco de Borja Barreda, last descendant of the Barreda in the nineteenth century. Among its later owners was the Infanta Paz de Borbón. In 1981 it was restored to be the headquarters of the Santillana Foundation.

It is one of the largest and most well-known green spaces in the city. The park is located next to the Plaza de España and was donated to the city by Infanta María Luisa Fernanda de Borbón in 1893. The park’s design combines elements of formal gardens and more informal areas, featuring fountains, statues, gazebos, and tree-lined avenues.
Within the Maria Luisa Park, you will also find the Plaza de América, which houses several Mudéjar-style buildings that are part of the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929.
