Happy birthday to the number one princess in the world!! 💖

ramble of my scattered thoughts on the piece under cut as usual cuz i love talking 😋

This has been an idea I've been cookin for a while, and it was so cluttered and unlike any other ensemble piece I've made... and I decided I oughta do it anyway. I love Miku, I love Vocaloid, and I wanted to do something really ambitious and crazy for her anniversary. Crazy that she's turning her "canon" age this year TwT

I had the idea floating around since like, May...? And then finally started acting on it around June 18. I'm terrible with deadlines, obvious with how I can never make a silly birthday post in time, so I started wayyyy ahead to make sure I have some room to be lazy lol, especially with an idea as ambitious as this.

This was finished on July 12! So I had to sit on this for an annoying amount of time. Very difficult for someone like me who just wants to talk about everything I'm working on to the masses. But at the very least, that gave me the time to work on the draft for this post.

Here's some ~behind the scenes~ scribbles leading up to the finished piece!

Left is the chicken scratch plan i made in my handy dandy notebook (whenever things are getting real and ambitious, i always made a rough ROUGH plan in there. Usually I'd do a rough pass of the full thing, but this was too complicated for me to do traditionally. I majorly benefited from digital tools to make this possible). CyberDiva and CyberSongman were considered, but I ended up cutting them cuz I just didn't feel like drawing them sorry-- (just pretend they're off to the side. They gave Ruby and Clara the pizza lol). Right is the "final" completed sketch (before I decided to include Chika mid-way through coloring and VY1 and VY2 near the finish line). I started by drawing the main "groups" separated on a different canvas so I can plop them into the main canvas for easy rearranging and transforming. However I got lazy and ended up drawing everyone in the bottom right corner directly on the canvas since I liked seeing the big picture of everyone's positions. Y'know.

Almost excluded Chika! But I like her design so much that I just felt like including her last-minute. You win this time, Chika fans. VY1 and VY2 were very close to being cut! I added them when I began doing the banner and thought "eh why not". I figured their non-human designs would be pretty easy to include pushed back in the bg. Ik VY1 is more commonly associated with the fan design, but I referenced the hairpin cuz it was simpler and the fan looked very annoying to draw 😭

Sorry to the fans of many Vocaloids I had to cut because this composition was insane enough as is. I promise I wanted to include fellas like CUL, LUMi and Sachiko 😭 I will admit I was a little biased on who I wanted to include over others. Like, I don't normally care for Bruno and Clara, but I wanted to get some more international 'loids in the mix. Also wanted to stick in the realm of official designs and not fan-designs since, as much as I can appreciate those, are just a whole "wait who is that guy supposed to be" situation I didn't wanna deal with. I also did wanna include even more character references through the balloons, but they ended up being kind of ugly and overcomplicated the BG :,) (Oh, and while this was originally planned to be a Vocaloid-only piece, I did end up including Teto, Neru, and Haku 'cuz those are Miku's besties dude!!! They may not be Officially in the club but they're her girls and it would be criminal to not invite them to her birthday).

Anyway, this project marks the first time I've drawn a lot of Vocaloids. Lily, Piko, Rana, Yuki, Yukari, Miki, Maika, and many more lol. All of 'em I've heard or seen in passing, but now I actually drew them, and some have really cool and fun designs!! I got into a habit of drawing Merli after this since I just love her design for example. And I'll probably be drawing more lol!!

Oh and the last thing I'll add for now!! The cake is indeed made up of various song references!! I wanted to reference the "big four" producers, just absolute icons in Vocaloid history. The pink/black checkerboard is "World is Mine" (Ryo), the crescents on the side is "Rolling Girl" (Wowaka), the smiley faces is "Matryoshka" (Hachi), and the three hearts on the side is "The Vampire" (DECO*27, which is sort of a symbol of his whole Mannequin album tbh). I know "The Vampire" is a bit modern but I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head. I'm a fake DECO fan I know 😔 "Matryoshka" was originally going to be referenced in the colors of the candles but believe me it looked like shit so I just went for something else last minute 😭

soooo i redesigned sachiko-san cuz her design was NOT cutting it for me<3 below is my thought process behind it :3

before anything i’d like to clarify that this is anything but a professional design analysis or smth like this was just for fun 😋.

the drawing was super rushed and on a whim cuz i just had a lot of thoughts in the moment that were interesting to me and i wanted to get down on a page. i’m far from a corpse party expert and only know the blood covered game lore LMAOO.

also this is in no way meant to shit on the og corpse party artists or writers, it’s just my personally opinions and takes! for funsies :3

anyway!! now with that out of the way!!

sachiko has always been such a bizarre character to me.

like, she’s the twist villain, she’s some little girl, she’s the victim, she’s the murderer, she’s from the 1940s but also from the 70s!?!!

she has such a convoluted story and generally vague motives and GRRRR it makes me a little frustrated because she’s really interesting, but her writing is confusing :(

but anyway, her character is not what i wanted to tackle today! i’m here about her design!

cuz yknow.

for being the all powerful main villain of the corpse party saga, her design always came off to me as very “generic evil ghost girl” to me.

apart from her frankly iconic red dress, she really doesn’t have that many defining features- and more importantly to me, her design doesn’t communicate her story against all!!

sachiko shinozaki was a timid girl in the 40s who was r*ped by her teacher and then fell to her death at 7 years old. how do i even begin to unpack that.

first i wanted to make her seem like she’s from the 40s, or at least nod to the fact. i knew i wanted to keep her hair long and straight like in the game, so i opted to use her outfit as a means of doing this.

since she died in school, i decided to look up some japanese uniforms from the 40s, and i ultimately decided to use this picture as reference because the neck of the uniform looked closest to sachiko’s dress. i also thought that the pin on the uniform could be a nice way to callback to her paper doll!

i wanted to also replace her long hair with pigtails like ayumi’s as a nod to them being related (i want them to look alike also, so sachiko here resembles my own ayumi design). the pigtails are shaped like scissor blades cuz i thought that would be fun :)

for her ghost form, i let her hair down like in the game, but i wanted to keep that scissor-like sharpness so i made her hair all spiky.

i twisted her limbs and messed up her left eye to indicate that fall damage (she did fall from the 3rd floor), but i kept that ripped look on her dress cuz slay. made her eyes read again to hint at the damage she took (feel like i might need to redo her face though cuz it doesn’t feel “i fell to my death”-y enough)

My Verdict: A long running staple of the Shoujo genre and said to have kickstarted the Yuri trend that gave us Kannazuki no Miko, Strawberry Panic, Aoi Hana and Sasameki Koto, Maria-sama Ga Miteru still holds up to this very day. And thanks to Sentai Filmwork’s ability to print it on Blu-ray, now even newcomers can enjoy the quiet campus of Lilian Academy. Buy it! Maria Sama Ga Miteru, a blu ray review

The pleats on their skirts shouldn’t be noticeable. Their while sailor collars should always be tidy. Walking slowly is preferred here. St. Lilian’s Academy is a Garden for Maidens.”

Our Protagonist, Yumi Fukuzawa, is a freshman in St. Lillian Girls’ academy, an all-girls Catholic School. One day, while praying in front of the Virgin Mary, Mother Maria, someone comes up to her. It is none other than the school’s idol, Sachiko Ogasawara. While Sachiko fixes Yumi’s collar, Yumi’s friend, Tsutako, takes a photograph and blackmails Yumi to get the scoop. While Yumi goes to the Yamayuri council, which acts as the governing body for the school, Sachiko storms out of the room and trips on top of her. Sachiko attempts to make Yumi her petite Souer. Through the Souer system, upperclass girls can make a lowerclass girl their ‘sister’ by handing them a Rosary. If the underclass girl accepts, they become partners and look after each other until graduation. While seemingly innocent at first, the system can lead to all sorts of conflicts and misunderstandings but also joy and laughter. This is the story of how Yumi first accepts Sachiko’s Rosary and ends when she eventually bestows that rosary to another. I really love Yumi as a character. While she does act as the ‘ordinary outsider’ meant to be the audience Point of view character, there’s a charm to Yumi. She’s actually very quick on her feet, eager to help and very kind and friendly. She does make mistakes but there’s a very human quality and the small moments where she shines (initially rejecting Sachiko’s rosary, practicing her routine to impress the graduating Seniors, helping out during the school festivals, standing up to some rich snobs) that really makes her shine. (Though I will give some credit to Yumi as she manages to possess proper hand eye coordination and inner ear balance that her successors Himeko Kurusugawa and Nagisa Aoi seem to lack.) In some ways, Sachiko was the inspiration that lead to the creations of such characters such as Shizuru Fujino from My-Hime, Chikane Himemiya from Kannazuki no Miko and Shizuma Hanazono from Strawberry Panic. On the surface, Sachiko is a cold, stern and almost unbendable force of nature, bent on getting her way. However, slowly but surely, Yumi melts the icy exterior to find the human underneath. (It also helps that Sachiko occasionally is the butt of the joke at times, such as, being her first time at a fast food restaurant, she remembers to order correctly and pay the server, but forgets to pick up the food). Among my favorite characters is the adorably lovable Satou Sei, a senior of the school and the canon lesbian of the show. Sei is often flirtatious but also very humorous to boot. There’s a sort of fandom clash as many people ship Sei and Yumi together and Shimako and Sachiko together. (There’s the implication that if Sei had not picked Shimako to be her petite seour, she would have picked Yumi and Sachiko is jealous of that fact since she wanted to give Shimako her rosary first, but Shimako refused her). Rounding out the cast are Rei and Yoshino, a Kendo Senior and her sickly cousin who might switch the idea of a tomboy on its head and Touko, Sachiko’s cousin who’s prickly exterior might hide someone much more vulnerable and Noriko, a girl who might share a love of Buddhist statues the Shimako does. A lot of people cite Maria Watches Over Us (or Marimite for short) as the revitalization of the Class S genre, which focuses on romantic friendships between school girls. A lot of people have pointed out that the genre has had its fair share of negative stereotypes and doesn’t exactly portray a healthy or realistic relationships for young queer women. But, I’ve always stated I would rather have a problematic show that affects me emotionally over a well-meaning show that has a good social message but leaves me cold. Of course, the show is self-aware of its genre roots and occasionally pokes fun at it. (At one point, Yoshino does the ‘rich girl laugh’ with another person and all it does is draw unwanted attention from passerbys). If there’s definitely a weak spot to the series, it’s definitely the animation. Panning shots and freeze frames are all present here, but the direction is solid enough where you’re enjoying it even when you notice the stitches and seems. (It’s an early 2000’s show centering about the school lives of ordinary girls. What were you expecting, Darling in the Franxx?) Granted, Season 3 is when the animation quality (as well as the aspect ratio) picks up but even the older seasons are passable and enjoyable to watch. What sells the show isn’t necessarily the animation, but character interactions with one another. Those looking for Women Love Women relationships probably aren’t going to find it here, but it did lead to the inspiration for other works to tackle. Each movement, each subtle touch or facial reaction or slip of the tongue feels weighty. You can tell there’s so much more being said than what’s on the screen and the characters missing or picking up on those subtleties really is the highlight. Season 3 is where the show changes format from a half hour episodic series to an hour long OVA (Original Video Animation) format and they play out more like self-contained movies than a series of over-arching episodes. And yes, the blu-rays also include “Don’t let Mother Maria Know.”. These are a series of humorous shorts included with the original DVD releases that contain cartoonized versions of the characters engaging in very silly behavior and outtakes.

After Nozomi Entertainment sold the rights off, Sentai Filmworks bought them and did a pretty good job localizing the show. The show contains no English Dub, but translates the Japanese text to pretty close to its original source material. One thing to note is the lack of honorfics. Honorfics are titles one refers to when addressing another person, like –san meaning Mr. or Ms. in English. “Onee-sama” is translated to “Dear Sister” while “Sachiko-sama” is translated to “Lady Sachiko”. (Though for some reason, Kashiwagi’s nickname for Sachiko, Sacchan, is kept in). CAVEAT: There’s the implication that Maria Watches Over Us feels dated in its depictions of girls’ relationships and class differences and promotes not quite so healthy relationships. But, had it not been for Studio DEEN and the characters of Yumi and Sachiko, we might have never gotten Himeko and Chikane or Shizuru and Natsuki or Fumi and Akira or Kazama and Sumika or Kase and Yamada or Touko and Yuu. Hell, even Flip Flappers did a parody of Marimite for an episode. With Nozomi Entertainment selling off the rights (as well as Seasons 2 and 3 DVDs being sold for outrageous prices), Sentai Filmworks has done the anime community a service by preserving this work and making it available to Western audiences. So, it all but depresses me to know that this great work will go unnoticed while the inevitable fans order the next Umaru merchandise instead. If you have enough of an attention span to watch a show that doesn’t have constant explosions, fanservice or attack names being shouted out, it’s definitely worth a look see. Of course, speaking as someone who binge watches Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure during his off hours, I enjoyed every bit I had with Maria-sama ga Miteru.

Verdict: Buy it!

4: who did you choose to summoner support, and why?

i’ve swapped between them for a while but my current one is set to raigh!

besides being my favorite fe6 character and honestly one of my favorite characters in the series in general, he’s the one who desperately needs the stat boosts the most out of my faves, considering he’s been in the game since launch haha

i also think it’s just more heartwarming to summoner support characters i clearly love as opposed to ones i can would only use for The Meta(tm)

15: favorite dancer unit?

A HARD QUESTION Q___Q CONSIDERING HOW MUCH I LOVE THE REFRESH UNITS IN FE....

lene if we’re just going based off personal biases! i love her character arc in fe4 and her motivations and personality. in general, her family gets a lot of love from me. but if we’re going for utility? then i think that’s either peony or legendary azura! having a dancer who can so effortlessly move around the map and get to the people they need to, has buffs built into their weapon/refresh itself, and/or increases the amount of movement their allies has for a turn is just so so useful, and they’ve definitely seen a lot of use out of me as a result!

20: any ideas for a future gauntlet?

i keep hoping there’s going to be a gauntlet that’s based on twins! we’ve had mothers vs sons, fathers vs daughters, why not some little fun sibling rivalry? i think we can get a good spread for continent representation AND gender representation as well!

with the units we currently have in feh, i’d probably want it to be:

julia vs julius, lugh vs raigh, eirika vs ephraim, felicia vs flora

yes i want this to put raigh in a voting gauntlet finally so what AKSHMRHG

i think another cute idea would be to have it be jagen/oifey archetype themed! let the mentors come out! we’d need more of them in the game, but my ideal gauntlet for that would be:

are y’all ready to go “huck what the FUCK” cause i’m here to throw down some YEAR ONE ART!!!!! we’re gonna show off multiple cause i’m too indecisive to pick just one

klein’s art is one i like for all his poses! tobi’s definitely one of my favorite artists, having such a nice palette of colors. klein’s has always stuck with me for drawing my attention even before i actually knew who he was (fe6.... had taken me a long time to get through MAKHRKGR) and i like how he actually does have very different expressions between his normal, attacking, and damaged art!

winter envoy chrom!!! ebila’s art was nice Y’ALL ARE JUST MEAN!!!! there’s a charm to how they draw chrom. when i see ebila’s chrom, i think, man, this guy legitimately wants the best for me. his smiles just communicate that, but his anger feels raw too! the colors are pleasing, the special art isn’t too chaotic and there’s a flow of action with them, and ebila’s art definitely improved with each chrom they got to draw. bring ebila back!!!!

legendary lyn!! we’re outside of year one i think with this one, but wada sachiko’s colors are so vibrant! lyn, despite being in damaged art, doesn’t actually look overly fanservicey! her expressions are great, i particularly love seeing her fierceness in the heat of battle here! it’s also nice to see the fur there and how it’s drawn; it looks so fluffy! this is definitely my favorite of wada sachiko’s feh works!

I’m putting this under a cut because this is very long. (I mean I’m giving an infodump about my OCs, of course it’s long. XD)

Let’s start with the Despair From the Heart cast. (my HC for Danganronpa 52)

Kokoro (Ultimate Lucky Student) is basically just endless bouncy optimism. She has a part-time job as a stage idol and wanted to do it full-time before getting her letter from Starlight Academy. She’s basically best girl.

Jasper (Ultimate ???) didn’t actually forget his talent like the Ultimate ???s we’ve seen in canon. He refuses to say it for his own reasons, but he insists he does have one. He initially comes off as a smooth and polite person, but does have a bit of an unsettling and mysterious aura about him.However, (this isn’t really a spoiler since I’ve revealed this already) he’s also REALLY twisted and fucked in the head. The extent of this will be explored later in DFTH.

Haruto (Ultimate Broadway Actor and Ultimate Best Boy) admired Broadway shows for a long time and vowed to be up there on stage one day. It took a lot of work, but he finally got there. Personality-wise, he’s cool, charismatic and a flirtatious ladies man. But he doesn’t have a big ego like you’d expect and is a nice and genuine person. However despite this, he does have the capability to be useful in the trials.

Amai (Ultimate Digital Artist) is a very popular online artist (SweetDevil45chaotic dumbass not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, and does sometimes believe that she’s nothing without her fans behind her.(also, her and Kokoro previously knew each other as they were friends online.)

Ahmya (Ultimate Archer, yeah I know it’s been done a lot) is an excellent archer despite her age. However her skill got her targeted (pun not intended) by a rival competitor, who hired someone to shoot her eye out during a competition. She still managed to win though, which led to her earning her talent. Ahmya is cold and bitter, to the point where she seems emotionally detached. However, this is mainly because she feels satisfied with her own company. But she becomes less cold if you warm up to her.

Sachiko (Ultimate Delinquent) is the group’s resident badass. As a result of being kicked out of multiple schools, her parents decided enough was enough and sent her to a prestigious private school to reform her bad behaviour, but she managed to topple the school’s hierarchy in a week. She’s aggressive, sarcastic, bitter and a LOT stronger than her thin physique suggests, and she doesn’t respect rules and authority at all. However, she does have a (repressed) softer side and is a bit of a tsundere.

Saiko (Ultimate Historian) ended up studying history after becoming interested in the subject as a result of his father working as a history professor at a college. He wrote a number of reports and papers on different time periods, and his intellect caught the other professors’ attention, leading to his work getting published by well respected sources and him becoming devoted to the subject. Saiko is charismatic and a bit of a flirt, but can come across as entitled and cocky. He also has a habit of saying something blunt or hurtful or that kind of thing, then immediately saying that he’s kidding.(his hair also has a gelled-down ahoge. I think that’ll give you all you need to know.)

Miko (Ultimate Bladesmith) lived with his uncle in the Japanese mountains for a lot of his life. (he never talks about to his parents and deflects the question when asked about them) His uncle was a blacksmith, which lead him to learning the art of making blades and excelling despite his young age. Miko is sensible and polite (with some people comparing his personality to the grace and honour of a samurai), but even though he comes off as intimidating and serious (which he can be), that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to have fun. However, despite his talent suggesting otherwise, he hates unnecessary violence, but he does know how to fight if he needs to defend himself.Also, a kind of running joke is that as a result of living in the Japanese mountains with no access to television or the internet, he knows practically nothing when it comes to millenial/pop culture. (at some point he asked Amai what a meme was and she laughed for 10 solid seconds before she realised he was serious)

Kaoru (Ultimate cinnamon roll Paediatrician) was bullied a lot for his weak-willed nature, which lead to him spending most of his time helping at the hospital where his parents worked. By chance one day, he found himself helping a young girl with a checkup in the paediatric ward. Due to his naturally gentle and kind demeanour, Kaoru found that he was talented in helping children and his parents were impressed with this, so he worked exclusively in the paediatric ward as a result. Kaoru is very kind and polite, but he’s also shy, fragile and has low self-esteem. However, this does a complete 180 when he’s doing medical work, where he becomes more serious and confident. He also has useful medical knowledge thanks to helping at the hospital for a long time.

Ayano (Ultimate Physicist) was sent to a specialist high school, and worked VERY hard in order to please her parents, excelling in the difficult subject of physics as a result and eventually studying at a university level while still at high school and even teaching younger year groups while in her senior year. Ayano is well-meaning and VERY smart, but can be blunt and pessimistic, and tends to overrule emotion with logic in her reasoning. Also, because of all the work she’s done, her sleep schedule has been permanently fucked up.

Rikona (Ultimate Chess Player) grew up in an orphanage as her parents weren’t in a position to raise her. Despite this, she yearned for a life of riches and found her calling one day when she easily beat an older girl at chess when she played for the first time. Despite her age, she managed to get a number of competition wins under her belt. Personality-wise, Rikona is kinda a mix between Hiyoko and Celeste. One moment she’s an entitled princess, and the next she’s a bitchy little girl who likes belittling people. (she also calls people “peasant” a lot)

Yuuma (Ultimate Jeweller) lived with his father after his parents divorced when he was 11. His father runs a jewellery company known as The Velvet Box, so Yuuma learned how to make jewellery to help. However when he was 15, his father suddenly fell sick due to copper poisoning and wasn’t able to make jewellery anymore, so Yuuma had to continue running The Velvet Box in his place. In the years that followed, The Velvet Box grew into a larger company mainly due to his designs. His appearance and height (him and Rikona are the shortest members of the cast) kinda gives the impression of him being like an overactive child, but even though he does act like an overactive child quite a bit, he is a lot more mature and cunning that he seems, as well as being cheerful and a generally good kid. However, he does have the tendency to be reckless and hotheaded, and is really, REALLY sassy.

Okay, that’s the DFTH cast done, is there anyone else I should-Oh yeah, I should mention Nisetaro, shouldn’t I.

Nisetaro was originally a very minor character in my rewrite AU thing of V3, but I ended up falling in love with him so much I ended up giving him a personality. He doesn’t actually have an Ultimate talent. He works as an intern for Team Danganronpa. He has anxiety and is pretty self-deprecating (and also apparently has depression), and kinda uses sarcasm as a front for that. However he is a genuinely nice person, and really hates Tsumugi.(he is also chaotic gay and has a crush on Shuichi)

Falling Slowly: Christmas Special

Chapter 6: Lucky Strike

Christmas is approaching, causing a buzz of excitement in Polar Star dorm. They decided to hold a Christmas party on the 24th right before everyone goes to winter break since there are those who plan to go home to their hometown. As part of the celebration, they also agreed to hold an exchange gifts event. As usual, all from the rebel forces were invited.

Everyone huddled in Marui’s room while Yuki writes down their names in a paper which she drops in a small box. Hisako is standing near her, holding a clipboard containing a name list and checking that all are accounted for.

“Ok now everyone! Take one name here in the box. Please do look at the name on the paper first to check if it’s your name. If it’s yours, you have to give it back and draw another. There’s no limit to the price of the gift. You have to give your present on the eve of the 24th during our Christmas party here at Polar Star.” Hisako announces.

“However, you cannot reveal to anybody whom you’ve picked. If you were found out by anybody, there will be a punishment.” She holds out another small box. “You will pick your punishment from this box. Before you give your gift on the 24th, anyone can report if they found out who you were going to give the gift to.

“Of course, in the event that we caught someone who is lying and/or there is someone who reports a wrong person, he/she will have to take a punishment as well. So you really have to be certain before you report somebody. Any questions?”

“Who thought of the punishments? I think, to be fair, we have to submit our suggestions for the punishments.” Daigo said, looking over to Shoji.

Looking pissed, Shoji interjects. “Why? You think that you will beat me at this? I can think of much better punishment than you!”

“Guys, I think the issue should be why do we have to have a punishment if we were found out? Or why do we have to betray someone else?” Marui asks.

“This makes it more exciting right? I take it that everyone here from the rebel forces is always up for a challenge.” Hisako answers.

Suddenly, a fire of determination swarmed in the eyes of Daigo, Shoji, Takumi, and Ryo ⏤ they wouldn’t back down from a challenge.

“Wonderful! Challenges like these really do strengthen friendship.” Isshiki-senpai yells delightfully. “Nice work as always, Arato-kun.”

“But I really doubt that we are even celebrating the spirit of giving and⏤“

“Never mind that, Marui! Just join in on the fun, will you?” Yuki said.

“Ah, Arato-san, I have a question.” Megumi raises her hand. “Will we have any wish lists so that we can also check the wants of the one we picked?”

“Well, we will not have one of those Tadokoro-san. We’ll just base our gifts on how we know the person so you need to really make an effort to discover the wishes of the one you picked…without getting found out of course.” Hisako explains.

“Eh, now that is really a challenge.” Souma remarks.

Takumi scoffs, “No this seems pretty easy to me. How about we have a contest Yukihira? The one who gets found out on the 24th will have to do another punishment chosen by the winner?”

“Huh, cocky are we? Well, you’re on!” Souma said with determination.

Clearing her throat, Hisako proceeds, “Ok if you don’t have questions anymore, please settle down so Yuki can move around and let you pick from the box.”

After drawing a name in the box and checking that it isn’t hers, Yuki stands up and goes straight to Shoji who was already pumped up from the challenge entailed in this activity. Reactions range from gasps to contemplating nods as people picked; others seem to be really pleased though. Surprisingly, even the easily nervous Megumi heaved a relieved sigh.

Souma is not nervous; in fact, he is excited. Hopefully, the person he picks is someone that he knows really well so that he doesn’t have to investigate that much to reveal the identity of the one he picked. Well, he knows most of the people here anyway.

Alice, who was next to Souma, laughed her ojou-sama laugh upon seeing the name; then it was Souma’s turn to pick. Here goes…He reached out from the box and unfolded the paper to find out:

Nakiri Erina

Souma laughs. Well, this is really a challenge.

Despite what others say, Souma really thinks a lot about the recipe every time he cooks. He may look like he doesn’t think thoroughly about what he cooks because of his nonchalant attitude but he is a hard worker ⏤ even willing to spend a lot of sleepless nights just to perfect his dish. This stems from his burning desire to step up to any challenge. Well, this desire to prove himself is not just limited to the world of cooking, but any challenge that comes along his way…even the challenge of gift-giving.

Souma is currently in his room, sitting on top of his bed. He is holding his chin with his eyes closed and there is an occasional murmur that can be heard from him.

“Not good enough.” “No, she will definitely hate that.” “Nah…I can’t give that, can I?”

Although Souma is certain that Erina will definitely not like anything that he will give, he is still pumped up since liking his gift would be like her saying “It’s delicious” to his dish. But what to give her…Hmmm… He only has a few hours left to think of the gift since his efforts were all in vain.

Flashback:

It was a Saturday morning in Polar Star dorm and Erina has just left for her God Tongue tastings. Souma’s first idea was to get her favorite manga. He can’t ask Hishoko about ideas since she will suspect him.

Good thing he overheard Erina and Tadokoro talk before about a manga that they both read. He planned to eavesdrop on their conversation to get the title but for the next 2 days, it seemed that they were just talking about the upcoming Christmas party. Leaving him with no other option, he decided to ask Tadokoro.

“Ah, Tadokoro!” Souma called the attention of the bluenette who was preparing her breakfast. “I just met Nakiri a while ago and she was wondering if you have the manga that you two talked about? She said you would know haha.”

“Oh, Souma-kun. Ah, Sachiko’s Love, isn’t it? But why? She can ask me about it. Is she alright?” Megumi asked, with a bit of concern in her voice.

“Ah no, it’s not that. She had to leave early for her tastings. Y’know, busy schedule. haha!” Souma laughed, nervously.

Megumi eyed him suspiciously before answering. “Well, that manga just ended last week though. Did she forget⏤”

“Y’know what? Maybe I misheard her this morning! I will just ask her again.” Souma cuts her off and turns to leave, avoiding any further questions. “See ya later, Tadokoro!”

End of Flashback

This leaves Souma on his current situation, deep in thought. Souma groans as he lies on his bed, still with his eyes closed.

Should I risk going inside to her room just to check her manga? Or anything else that she has an interest in. Hmmm…

Souma racked his brains to remember the blonde’s room when he went there last week so that he can get an idea of what to give her but what came to him was last week’s memory. He suddenly felt his face become flushed. He shot up and yelled in frustration only to be comforted by Isshiki-senpai who was in his ceiling…wait, Isshiki-senpai? He yelled again, this time in surprise.

“My, my…Souma-kun! You look stressed. I was trying to call you from the tubes but you seem to be so serious there. Why don’t you go down first for dinner?” Isshiki-senpai said while chuckling.

When Souma went down, he can clearly feel the excitement of the people about the party tomorrow. Megumi, Ryoko, and Yuki are all huddled in one table, whispering and giggling about something. In a near table, Marui and Ibusaki were in deep conversation about their guesses in whom the people picked. Souma sat beside them.

Alice, who now stays more frequently here in Polar Star Dorm, is laughing her ojou-sama laugh. “I am pretty sure that no one knows who I picked so far,” Alice says to the two of them. “But I know who Ryo-kun’s already since he asked who she was and he even asked what to give to a girl!"

Souma glances at her aide, who was sitting beside her. He just stared blankly at her ojou, not caring about what she’s saying.

“Cut him some slack, it really is difficult to give a gift to a girl, you know,” Ibusaki said, his face sullen.

“What? It’s easy! I mean, anything as long as it’s cute and pretty.” Alice said.

“Well, that’s the issue! What’s cute and pretty? A small grill is cute and pretty.” Ibusaki replied. Souma laughs.

“So is a dog,” Marui adds, Ryo snorted loudly in agreement.

“You are savages, really,” Alice said, glaring at them. “Think about what she most probably would like! Of course, she will appreciate anything if it’s from the guy that she likes.”

Ibusaki, Ryo and Marui just stared unconvincingly at Alice. But Souma was grinning widely…he finally got an idea.

The Cipher Frontier! Issue 30: "Thank you for coming to the Go! Go! Summer Tour!"

(“The Cipher Frontier! With Emma, Shade, Yuzu & Randal” is a regular column on the Fire Emblem Cipher website which summarises upcoming news concerning Cipher and other Fire Emblem materials. It is hosted by the four mascot characters. The following is a full translation of the 30th issue of the column, originally published on the 10th of August, 2017.)

Hello, everybody!!!!

To commemorate the second anniversary of Cipher and the launch of Series 9, five "Go! Go! Summer Tour" events were held across Japan!

And since they were so popular, we went out to the final event in Kanazawa a few days ago.

All of the events had so many fans of Cipher and Fire Emblem come by!

I saw a few people took the time to come a long way for them, too.

T'was more to the festivities than dueling. With live paintings and autographs from illustrators, mini-concerts, quiz areas and more, each event was packed with all manner of fun to keep one entertained!

Speaking of which... Let's take a moment to talk about just what happened at the Summer Tour!

Naturally for a Cipher event, first and foremost is the competition! At the Summer Tour, you could battle others to your heart's content!

I got in plenty of matches, too!

...But I *sniff* got plenty of losses...

The Pack Battles, too, offered fearsome competition. How interesting it is to lay aside the traditional way of battle for a time!

It was really nice to see the event areas that were just for women and beginners to battle in!

A lot of people came to the practice area to learn how to play Cipher.

Just collecting Cipher cards is neat and all, but playing with them is even neater. Here's hoping everyone gives it a try at least once.

Battling was fun and all, but there were plenty of other things to enjoy as well!

At every showing, the live painting exhibitions with the illustrators drew remarkable crowds.

That's right! Hidari, Sachiko Wada, Daisuke Izuka, Kotaro Yamada, Senri Kita, and Yusuke Kozaki all provided us with wonderful Cipher artwork!

I couldn't miss out on seeing how these artists draw as it happens!

A lot of drawing is done on computers these days, so it's a pretty rare and valuable experience to get lucky and see it done by hand.

And all of their drawings are just... so full of feeling!

M-marvelous...! It is unthinkable, that such incredible works could be drawn in such a short period of time!

...Huh? Aren't there more of these drawings than there were illustrators?

You see, Senri Kita had actually drawn another one beforehand as a bit of a warm-up, to make sure she could do a live painting fast enough...

In this one she illustrated four senators of the Begnion Empire.

And because of that, Yusuke Kozaki did an additional drawing of four Nohrians.

I don't know why, but seeing King Garon smiling and laughing like this for the first time is a bit, er...

Seeing unexpected character depictions like these appear before our eyes at the events was really quite exciting.

Being surprised by it live as it happens certainly gave the event a very distinctive sort of charm.

The mini-concerts were really exciting, too!

Marvelous musical performances were held at the Summer Tour as well!

The tracks included "The Heritors of Arcadia" from "Echoes: Shadows of Valentia", and "Winds of Askr" from "Heroes"... All of them were just wonderful.

Mm. The simple piano and guitar combination resulted in good, clean listening.

The discussions about composition and development that they had between tracks were most interesting listening. It even heightened my love of their craft still further.

We also had Quiz Areas, loaded with enthralling puzzles!

Truly, this was an event that offered fun not only for Cipher players, but for Fire Emblem fans as well, all throughout each day.
