Named, but Nameless
1.2k homelander x reader, sfw, fluff, headcanons about his birth name, a canon conversation between my oc and homelander written in an x reader format, she/her reader
Gaining such a strong connection with another human, after Madelyn, was something Homelander was convinced would never happen again nor would he ever try again. The fragility of human life and the strength of a supe never mixed well. Like water and oil, so close and yet always separate. Life and love didn't care about that, though. Life and love were the reciprocating shakers, vibrating and agitating the oil and water until they were as incorporated as possible.
His couch was the shaker, and his knee was doing the shaking, bouncing up and down in rhythmic thumps. The foreign feeling of tightness in his chest overwhelmed him. He was a God. Why the hell was he feeling all these human emotions? What reason did he have to be so anxious? Beside him was nothing more than his mortal. He was stronger than her. He was braver than her. He could do anything and everything she couldn't. So why couldn't he respond to one simple question?
"Answer me.. please. Are you okay?" she said after concluding that he would stay silent. Her voice was laced with worry, with her brows knitted together. "Homelander?"
His supe name rolled off her tongue so deliciously, despite the name being admittedly bulky. Her voice carried that name through his every vein and artery, but the tightness in his chest remained. That was his name. He was Homelander. And yet, after gaining such a connection to her, the name felt… wrong. Perhaps it was the cliché of superheroes to have secret identities. Starlight had one, "Annie" they called her. Black Noir did, too, "Earving". Was his name worthy of being a secret identity?
"Homelander?" she repeated, speaking more sternly. She reached out to him, placing her hand over his bouncing knee, knowing all too well that she couldn't still it.
"John.." he said, his voice hushed.
"John?" she repeated.
Homelander grimaced, hearing her say it. This was a mistake. He said it too impulsively, and now it was too late to take it back.
"J.. John. It's my birth name. Use it. If you want, I mean." The uncertainty in his voice made him sick. He sounded so pathetic, so unsure, so human.
She didn't speak, instead just trying to read his expression. The silence sickened him. Was she judging him for his name? Was the name too simple or boring for her? He had never exactly told a partner his real name. They always seemed to just find out, whether by accident or by snooping. He had hoped being the one to tell this lover his name would feel liberating. Oh, how wrong he was. This felt suffocating. This felt like his identity was being forced upon him. This felt like that damned cage he was kept in as a child. John. John Doe. Named, but nameless. A science experiment with no sense of self. Only pain. Torment. Abuse.
"Do you want me to call you that?" her voice rang out, presumably noticing how uncomfortably he stirred from her silence.
He opened his mouth to speak, but then closed it again. Her knowing and using his assigned name was supposed to be the next step, and yet he wanted to say "no". Needed to say "no".
"It's okay if you don't want me to, baby. I'm okay with just calling you Homelander."
His brow furrowed as he groaned, slamming his hands on the couch and forcing himself to his feet.
"No! No, you aren't… you aren't fucking getting it!" Homelander paced, his hand up near his mouth as he chewed on the leather of his crimson glove. "It isn't enough. 'Homelander' isn't enough! Everyone calls me that… Everyone uses that name. It's not special!" He hardly knew if he was making any sense to her. He wasn't even making any sense to himself. He knew he had no reason to get upset or frustrated because of something as trivial as a name, and yet he couldn't help it. He felt like a child.
"Sweetheart, hey. It's alright. Let me try and understand, okay? Come here," she beckoned, arms opened and inviting.
His teeth sunk harshly into the leather, his pacing slowing down as he glanced toward her. He stood still before going to reclaim his spot beside her, leaning into her warmth with his nose pressing into her neck.
"Alright… So no 'John', and 'Homelander' isn't special enough. We could go with a nickname? I've used 'Homie' in the past. How about that one?"
The vibrations of her throat and the sound of her calmly beating heart soothed his unease. Always a problem solver, this one. The world would be damned if she ever couldn't find a solution to something.
"No… I like 'Homie', but it's still not special enough. I… I guess I want something more private. Just for us."
"Ah, I see."
Silence again, but this time he knew she was just thinking. He didn't speak either, curious to see what his partner would come up with. She often surprised him with her ideas and suggestions and he hoped she would surprise him here, too.
She broke the silence, "How about… Johnny? It is close to ‘John’, but far enough away to be special, and private, of course.”
The corner of his lip quirked in surprise. "Johnny?" he repeated, lifting his head off her shoulder. He had to fight back the smile forcing its way onto his lips.
"Yeah! Johnny. I think it's cute, personally."
Homelander bit the inside of his cheek, averting his eyes all while turning his head away from her. That smile won and sat plastered across his lips. Hearing her say it again made a warmth blossom from his chest and spread to his every extremity. He could feel the blood rushing to his cheeks. It wasn't any spectacular nickname at all, rather common really, and yet it sat with him. The tightness and anxiety he had felt was quickly forgotten.
"I mean, we can try it," he said with an attempt at sounding indifferent. He leaned back against the couch, head still turned away from her.
His response earned a small laugh from her, "We'll try it, then." He heard her leaning closer and saw her hand coming around out of his peripheral. Soft and tender, her hands held his face as if he were a fragile, porcelain doll. She turned his head to look at her, her eyes filled with nothing but affection and love for him. They stared deep into the blues of his own. Instinctively, his head leaned deeper into her hold, lips centimeters away from her palm.
"I love you, Johnny…"
That…
It rolled off her tongue, her lips… It glided through the air like a feather. His eyes grew wider and softer, lips parting as he took it all in. Her voice echoed throughout his psyche. He latched onto the soundwaves, never wanting to forget how beautiful her words sounded. His mind felt numb and he felt a high he’d never experienced before. He felt lightheaded in the best way possible. All that combined with the softness and love in her eyes made him feel as if he would faint right in her arms. He leaned deeper into her touch, reaching a hand up to press hers harder into his cheek. He kissed her palm, lips smiling against her skin.
I love you, Johnny…
"I love you too, my darling…"

Ghost with a Schizophrenic!S/O
I've been going through it again as of late, so I decided it's time to write something that would help me cope. Not requested, because who would request something like this in the first place? I'm very nervous about posting this, but I thought maybe someone else would like to see something like it, maybe someone else can like it as well. That's the reason why I started to write in the first place, so the things I want to see are somewhere out there as well. Anyway, what it says in the title. These are based on how I would like someone to treat me, so this is not at all a guide on how to treat someone with the condition. I wrote the same thing for Soap, except his is twice as long. I'm gonna post it afterwards.
As soon as you come home from your appointment, either completely dejected or empty looking, he’ll know something was up. Whether you outright tell him or not is up to you, but he will ask you what happened, he’s just that worried about you. Your diagnosis must be pretty bad if you, usually so cheerful and always trying your best, are pretty down in the dumps about it. He’ll gently try to coax it out of you if you won’t tell him immediately, he just really wants to know what he can do to help you. While he won’t force it out of you, if he sees you’re feeling especially blue about it then he will try to ask you about it. Making you budge in a gentle way is his goal, he just really wants to be there for you whenever he can.
In all honesty, Ghost is probably the last person to judge you for something like that. When it comes to you he’s understanding and patient, just communicate with him what you need. You really don’t need to be ashamed of your being schizophrenic in front of him, or at all, you can just tell him.
When you do tell him, he’ll be quiet for a moment, processing the information and what he should do with it. Granted, he doesn’t exactly know what it all encompasses, thinking it’s just hallucinations of varying degrees, but the second he has some time to spare he will read up on it and what kinds of symptoms there are, what it’s like for someone who has the illness and, most importantly, how he can help you. While he may not always trust what his sources have to say, he will openly communicate with you about what he read and ask you if it sounds like it might be of help to you. Generally speaking, he wants to understand this as well as possible since being schizophrenic can be quite the hurdle.
You have a problem with obsessive thoughts? He can’t take them away from you, he knows that much, but he can try to help you with them. You wanna hurt yourself? It’s alright as long as you don’t act on it. While he will grow concerned with you and maybe put the knives somewhere you can’t easily reach them at first, he trusts you to not act on your autoagressions. If it gets so bad you’re nauseous, shaking or twitching, then he’ll gently put your hands in his and tell a few jokes to get your mind off of things, to get a conversation with you going so you can be distracted from it all. It might not always work, but if it helps even somewhat then you can be sure he’ll try again, try harder next time.
Your mind is foggy and you’re confused, incapable of thinking well, or at all? He won’t judge you and try to make the conversation easier for you to follow. He definitely won’t belittle you and act as if you’re stupid for having a hard time. He tries to repeat things he said during a sentence so you can remember better what the conversation was about in the first place. And if you can’t speak at the moment in the first place? Not a problem either! The two of you can just spend your time together in silence, watching a movie or a series, maybe reading a book together while drinking some tea. If it’s easier on you, then he’ll help. By the time you’re together, Ghost probably knows you well enough to be able to respond for you from time to time, if you’re comfortable with that.
Thoughts or delusions of persecution? He knows it’s probably even harder for you in that regard since he works for the military and thus you might become a victim of the government or other organizations at any point in time, but he’ll go to great lengths to show you that he’s not affiliated with the government in that way. While he’s also well aware that you likely won’t believe him either until your episode is over, he’ll repeat it as many times as you need to hear it. Problems with thinking everyone can hear your thoughts? Oh, he’ll play a guessing game with you. Whatever it is you’re thinking, he’ll try his darndest to guess it wrong just to help assure you that he cannot, in fact, read your thoughts, regardless of what vicinity you’re in. He does try to make his wrong guesses a bit humorous as well. After all, it definitely wouldn’t hurt to see you smile again.
If you’re isolating yourself, he’ll tolerate it to some degree. While he knows that that’s just something a lot of schizophrenics do, he does want to spend time with you and make sure you’re doing well. If you’re prone to loneliness despite isolating yourself from time to time, then he’ll slowly introduce you to the people he trusts the most, namely Soap, Gaz and Price. They won’t know about your condition, but he’s hoping that you can befriend them somehow and have a good time with them as well. Soap especially is a social butterfly and it’s not that hard to get along with him. If you’re scared of any of them, he’ll try to desensitize you towards them with silly stories and making time for hangouts every once in a while, but he won’t force you to see them. Being scared of people is hard, but he just wants to help you be less lonely and maybe find some friends as well.

3. And why do you think i’d ever like them? I have taste
Eddie maybe is going soft in his old age - just turned twenty one despite the attempts of the Upside Down to keep him away from drinking legally. Not that underage drinking is the most illegal thing he’s ever done, but still. It’s either that or admitting that he’s largely underestimated the munchkins' ability to meddle combined with their total disregard for the word no.
Either way, he fails to recognize he’s being ambushed long after he’s allowed Max inside the trailer and fed her the rock-hard cookies Wayne baked the day before in a burst of culinary inspiration. To her credit, she doesn’t even flinch when the first bite threatens to dislocate her jaw.
At that point, anyhow, Red has gotten nail polish apparently out of thin air and is waving her slender, little hands in front of his face expectantly.
“Don’t you have other people to harass in your free time?”
Max levels him with an unimpressed stare. “As if me being here is not the highlight of your day.”
Eddie sniffs. “Lies and slanders. I was busy.”
“Wanking is not being busy, Edward.”
Eddie gasps outraged. “I am appalled by your language. Where is the respect for your elders?”
“I thought you believed in challenging the authority”, Max says, her voice saccharine.
Eddie jabs a finger at her. “Not when the authority is me. Now, let me do your hands and then go be annoying elsewhere.”
Max hands him a periwinkle blue bottle and extends her hand with a sigh. As if she is the one doing Eddie a favor in letting him paint her nails.
The nerve.
“You know,” Max says, a couple of brush strokes in. “You’re starting to sound just like Steve.”
Eddie snorts. “I absolutely am not. Don’t speak jock just yet.”
Max waves her other hand impatiently. “I’m talking about the whole parenting schtick you inflict on us. Respect your elders. Don’t go where I can’t see you. Behave or else.”, she lists in a poor impression of his and Steve’s voices.
“Quit wriggling”, Eddie mutters. “I won’t be held accountable if my chef d’oeuvre gets messed up.”
Max cocks an eyebrow, as if he just proved her point - which, Eddie can admit, he kinda did -, but, blessedly decided to keep still. “Anyway”, she resumes, “I’m right. Steve even says we’ll make him go gray before his time, geez.”
“Can’t say he’s wrong. You dipshits are a handful.”
“I think Steve would make a gorgeous milf", she muses. "Don’t you?”
For a moment, Eddie actually contemplates the thought of an older Harrington, his luscious, thick hair all gone silver gray. The idea should be hilarious, it really should.
But, as his brain unhelpfully supplies, there’s no realm of possibility in which Steve Harrington is not painfully attractive.
When he comes back to his senses, he sees Max grinning like a Cheshire cat.
“Shut up”, he says immediately. He starts on her other hand with renewed focus.
Coming to his house just to put the virtual image of silver-fox Harrington in his brain.
Rude.
Max bats her lashes from behind the thick frame of her new glasses. “So, you do think Steve would make a gorgeous milf.”
“Never said such a thing.”
“But you thought it.”
“Did not.”
“You liiiike him.”
“And why do you think I’d ever like Steve?” Eddie drawls, feigning disinterest. “I have taste.”
Max snorts loudly. “Dude, you have many qualities but taste in men is not one of them.”
Eddie throws his hands in the air. “You don’t even know who I dated!”
Of course, calling it dating is a bit of a stretch. Living in a conservative little town in the middle of nowhere Indiana has never done wonders for his lovelife, and that was even before the murder charges.
“I saw the posters in your room”, she points out. “Besides, you and Steve are both lame, so it’s a match made in heaven.”
Eddie shakes his head. “Geez, thanks. I’ll make sure to tell him the next time I see him. Maybe I can’t get him to disown you.”
“And what would I inherit anyway? Your joint collection of hairspray cans?”
Eddie, with a surprisingly good aim, throws the dripping brush right at her nose. Max scrambles away with a shriek before retaliating with what remained from her half munched cookie.
Ten minutes later, they’re both lying down on the floor. Max’s nails are messed up beyond repair, crumbles are scattered in every corner of the room and Eddie has got nail polish in his hair.
He inspects the raggedy carpet Wayne had installed some years ago in front of the sofa.
“Dude, this will be hell to clean later”, he complains, inching away from the bright pink stain and getting more comfortable on the floor.
“Tough luck”, Max replies unbothered, her head propped up on his legs. Then, more softly, she adds: “You know, it’s okay if you do like Steve.”
“I don’t”, Eddie replies weakly. Max ignores him.
“Sure, he’s lame and sometimes he nags too much, but he’s good, you know. Safe.”
She quiets, letting her words sit for a while between them. The late afternoon sun filters through curtains, making Max’s hair shine red gold. The noise of tires scratching on the gravel coming from the window temporarily fills the silence.
Safe, Eddie thinks. That’s a word he wouldn’t think he’d ever apply to Steve Harrington.
And yet.
“Yeah”, he says. “He is.”
He feels more than see Max nodding. “And also he’s hot”, she adds through a smirk.
Eddie laughs, pulling a little at her hair. “My, my, what would Lucas say if he knew you go around calling other boys hot.”
“What I say is my business”, Max replies dryly. “And you’re not denying it. You liiiike him.”
“Not this shit again!” he groans, but he can feel the smile pulling at the corner of his lips.
“And you think Steve is…”
“You think I’m what?”
Eddie scrambles up so fast that Max shrieks and almost bangs her head on the floor.
Steve looks at them both with a bemused expression on his face.
Eddie blinks up at him. “Harrington, what- what are you doing here?”
“The door was open”, Steve supplies unhelpfully. “And I’m here to pick up Max, didn’t she tell you?”
Max, still half sprawled on the floor, has the audacity to smirk.
“It must have slipped my mind.”
Eddie narrows his eyes. What the fuck did you do? he tries to convey.
Watch and learn, dumbass, Max’s lazy grin says back.
“Steve, actually, I think I might head home, after all”, she says, with an apologetic tone that would fool no one who has spent more than a minute in her company. “I’m tired and my hip feels funny”.
Eddie would gasp at the audacity of pulling the I-barely-survived-the-monster-fucked-up-dimension card if he was not worried about her next move.
Steve, bless his kind soul, falls for it. “That’s what you get for sitting on the floor without pillows and shit”, he grumbles, but he crouches down and bodily picks Max up and helps her on her feet.
Which, mind you, it’s not that difficult since Max is skin and bones but Eddie might need a minute or two here to recover from this image.
Thank fuck, he’s already on the floor or he would have swooned.
Then, Max goes in for the kill. “Well, since you’re already here you could hang out with Eddie instead. Be lame together or whatever.”
Eddie’s eyes pop so wide open that they threaten to fall on the floor beside him.
He kinda wants to scream so that was your plan all along! while dramatically clutching at his fake pearls or something.
Harrington looks down at him, a half smile on his face. “Well, if Eddie doesn’t mind, why not”, he shrugs.
Eddie doesn’t know if it’s wishful thinking or not, but he thinks Steve looks almost hopeful.
“Yeah, sure, whatever”, he manages to say.
“Cool.” Steve claps his hands. “I’ll take Mayfield home and then we can hang out.”
“I live literally next door, Mom.”
Eddie watches them walking all the way to the Mayfield’s trailer and very pointedly does not freak out at his evening prospects. Max shoves Steve rather forcefully for someone who had just claimed that her hip hurt and he ruffles her hair.
He hears them bickering until their voices fade and he goes inside in search for a movie to watch with Steve.
***
(“Are you sure he doesn’t know that we set this up?”
“We? I did everything while you stood there looking dumb.”
“That’s what you told me to do, actually.”
“Whatever. And yes, I am. God, you’re both so besotted with each other it pains me.”
“Robin said the same thing.”
“She’s right. I don’t know why I don’t hang out with her instead of you idiots.”
“God forbid. You’ll start ganging up on me worse than you already do.”
“Scared, Harrington?”
“As every wise man should.” A pause. “So… you’re sure he likes me.”
“Positive.”
“100% sure?”
“Yes. God.” A shove. “Go get your man.”
Steve smiles and ruffles her hair. “Will do, Mayfield. Will do.”)
