#I will be honest and say that i do not like the 2017 movie

Andrew Scott, Vogue: April 2024.

Ripley, in other words, is the hero of the tale. “That’s why he fascinates so many,” says Scott. “There’s been so many iterations of him. I think it’s because people root for him.” Actors like Alain Delon and Dennis Hopper have tried the role; Matt Damon played him as an obsequious, lower-class naïf; John Malkovich, as a slimy, camp killer. Scott’s Ripley is different; a watchful loner escaping rodent-infested poverty, more at home among art than he is around people. Musician and actor Johnny Flynn plays his first victim—the monied Dickie Greenleaf—and Dakota Fanning is Dickie’s suspicious ex-girlfriend. “I find Tom quite vulnerable,” Scott tells me. “I don’t think he’s necessarily lonely, but I certainly think he’s solitary…. He seems to me by his nature that he just can’t fit in. He’s trying to survive.”
In Ripley, Zaillian extracts maximum Hitchcockian dread from every creaky footstep. But most sinister of all is Scott’s face, which exhibits a sharklike steeliness throughout. It’s a performance that exudes queasy force. Is Ripley a scammer, a psychopath, or both? “There’s so many things lurking beneath him that I’ve been very reluctant to diagnose him with anything. I never thought of him as a sociopath or murderous,” Scott declares. “It’s up to everybody else to characterize him or call him whatever they want.”
As we weave through tourists near the Tower of London, barely anybody notices Scott, save for a faint glimmer of recognition among mainly young women. He seems to draw reassurance from it. “I don’t like to think about it too much, if I’m honest,” he muses of fame. “I find it a little bit, er, frightening.” He is known but not blockbuster-recognizable, although he is in the upcoming Back in Action with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. What stunts did he do? “I can’t give that away, I’m afraid, or somebody from Netflix will come and shoot me in the head.”
What’s been on Scott’s mind the most hasn’t been acting at all, in fact, but art. As a 17-year-old, he was offered his first movie role on the same day he was given a scholarship to study painting. He chose acting, but has recently been thinking about Oliver Burkeman’s philosophical self-help tract from 2021, Four Thousand Weeks, which makes the case for focusing on the five things you truly want to accomplish. “For me at the moment, it’s like, What do you want to do? What do you want to say?”
He scrolls through his phone to show me his work. There’s a watercolor of a couple arguing in a restaurant in rich reds and greens, line drawings of friends and people on the beach, and two self-portraits. “It’s a bit weird,” he acknowledges of his depiction of himself, all bulbous forehead and Pan-like tufts of hair. His brisk, nervy lines are reminiscent of Egon Schiele or Francis Bacon, who turns out to be one of his favorite painters. “Well, God, I’ll take that,” he mutters at the comparison. He would like someday to go to art school. “I don’t ever regret it,” he says of acting. “But I suppose you just get to a stage where you think, What else? That’s one of the big painful things in life for me, where you can’t quite live all the lives.” As he gets older, he feels the tug toward revisiting old working relationships, including with Waller-Bridge: “We’ve definitely got things cooking,” he smiles. “I’d love to work with her again. She’s just a singular, wonderful person.” For her part, Waller-Bridge says: “I’d love to see him do a fully unhinged slapstick comedy character. Someone who is outraged at everything, all of the time.”
As we round the pavement and the Tate Modern looms back into sight, he recalls a poster he received in 2017—a monstrously large graphic that detailed every week in a human life span. “It’s your entire life if you live to 80—you have to fill in all the bits that you’ve already lived,” he remembers in awe, “a visually terrifying gift.” What did he do with it? “I didn’t hold on to it for too long.” Easy come, easy go: We finally finish our loop around the Thames and, as Scott disappears back into the throng, anonymous just the way he likes it, it occurs to me that the actor has many lives to live yet. ■

This was a very good article! I loved hearing Kristen’s (and Jodie Fosters) perspective as a queer trailblazer. Inserting some snippets below 🤍
To get to this point, Stewart’s weathered more than a decade of unrelenting media scrutiny, first about her straight relationships, then about her gay ones, as she figured out her own identity. She leveraged her global stardom from the “Twilight” franchise not to become a superhero or a lifestyle guru, but to fuel an astonishing run of acclaimed independent films, including “Clouds of Sils Maria,” “Still Alice,” “Certain Women,” “Personal Shopper” and the Princess Diana drama “Spencer,” for which she earned an Oscar nomination.
“Whenever I hear that she’s doing something new, I’m so curious to see what it is, because it’s going to be a movie that hasn’t been made before,” says Clea DuVall, who directed Stewart in one of her only Hollywood films during this period, Hulu’s 2020 release “Happiest Season,” the first lesbian Christmas rom-com backed by a major studio. “She really is so herself. And I think that’s why so many people respond to her the way they do — because she is so authentic.”
By the time Stewart stepped on the stage of “Saturday Night Live” in February 2017, she’d spent the previous two years trying to convince the press that it was OK to write about her relationships with women, rather than resort to the vexing practice of referring to her girlfriend as her “gal pal.”
“It wasn’t even like I was hiding,” she says. “I was so openly out with my girlfriend for years at that point. I’m like, ‘I’m a pretty knowable person.’”
But even with that posture, the media’s “gal pal” dog whistle triggered a deeper, more painful history of intrusive curiosity about Stewart’s sexual identity. “For so long, I was like, ‘Why are you trying to skewer me? Why are you trying to ruin my life? I’m a kid, and I don’t really know myself well enough yet,’” she says. “The idea of people going, ‘I knew that you were a little queer kid forever.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah? Well, you should honestly have seen me fuck my first boyfriend.’”
It’s worth dwelling on this point: For almost the entire history of Hollywood, queer actors dreaded the public discovering who they really were, and that fear kept the closet door firmly closed. “Because I was gay, I really retreated,” says DuVall, who came out publicly in 2016. “Even doing a teeny tiny movie like [the ’90s lesbian cult favorite] ‘But I’m a Cheerleader,’ people immediately were like, ‘She’s gay, how can we out her?’ I wanted to stay small.”
Stewart, though, went big, with a monologue on “SNL” about how President Donald Trump, in 2012, obsessively tweeted about her relationship with Pattinson. “Donald, if you didn’t like me then, you’re really probably not going to like me now, because I’m hosting ‘SNL’ — and I’m, like, so gay, dude,” she said to wild cheers from the audience.
“It was cool to frame it in a funny context because it could say everything without having to sit down and do an interview,” Stewart says before running through the kind of questions queer actors have had to consider before coming out publicly: “‘So what platform is that going to be on? And who’s going to make money on that? And who’s going to be the person that broke it?’ I broke it, alone.”
A few days later, I mention Stewart’s “SNL” monologue to Foster over the phone, and she lets out a big laugh. “I never knew that,” she says. “What a wonderful, funny, wry, modern way to be honest to the world. That’s just awesome.”
As Stewart talks about her “SNL” experience, I think about how no stars of her age and stature ever came out when I was growing up as a gay kid in the 1980s and ’90s. So to have her professional trajectory not skip a beat feels like real progress.
When I tell her as much, she takes the conversation in an unexpected direction. “Because I’m an actor, I want people to like me, and I want certain parts,” she says. “I have lots of different experiences that shape who I am that are very, very far from binary. But I did get good at the heteronormative quality. I play that role well. It comes from a somewhat real place — it’s not fake. But it’s fucked up that if I was gayer, it wouldn’t be the case.”
I try to clarify what she means: “So your career maybe would have suffered after coming out had you not affected a performative femininity …”
“… that I know works to my advantage,” she admits, nodding. “That’s why I’m fucking stoked about ‘Love Lies Bleeding.’”
Stewart didn’t let that scandal, as intense as it was in the moment, stifle her. Instead, she grew to fully embrace her queerness in her public life — like bringing her girlfriend, screenwriter Dylan Meyer, to the Oscars in 2022. “It’s not that I wasn’t scared,” Stewart says. “It was just that there was no other way to live.”
She’s even started to recognize that the most ostensibly heterosexual thing she’s done, “Twilight,” has its own queer sparkle. “I can only see it now,” she says. “I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating. It’s such a gay movie. I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor [Lautner] and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK. I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to destroy you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love.”
I ask Stewart if she understands how much her decision to come out has also made her a role model for LGBTQ people. She cackles. “Oh, you have no idea,” she says. “Every single woman that I’ve ever met in my whole life who ever kissed a girl in college is like, ‘Yeah, I mean, me too.’ I’m constantly joking with my girlfriend. I’ll be sitting there and be like” — she whispers — “‘She’s gay too. Everyone’s gay.’”
It can be easy to forget just how rare this still is, a giant movie star living such an openly queer life. “It feels like a generational thing, where I’m watching somebody make the leaps that I didn’t think I could ever do,” Foster says.
After fiercely guarding her privacy for decades, Foster came out publicly at the 2013 Golden Globes, and has just now played her first explicitly gay character in the 2023 biopic “Nyad.” Talking about Stewart has put Foster in a reflective mood. As our call is coming to an end, she offers this unprompted insight: “I get a lot of questions about who I was and what I represented in the industry, and was I — I don’t know …” She exhales. “Was I helpful in terms of representation? I’m sure there’s a 12- or 13- or 14-year-old when I was making movies as a young person who said that I had something to offer to them in their life as a queer person. I had to do it my way. I had pioneers to help the way, who I’m grateful for. And now people can be grateful for Kristen for being the pioneer. I’m just — I’m grateful to her.”
This sense of communion with the wider LGBTQ tribe is why Stewart has dedicated herself to embracing the fullness of who she is as a bro-y, butch-y queer woman in her work as an actor and, come hell or high water, a director.
“I was like, ‘I would like to be on that team because we need each other,’” Stewart says. “I didn’t want to be left out anymore. It was this whole world that I didn’t realize I could explore.”

Merc, what kind of Historical Military Man gets the wheels turning for you? What are the markers of 'Oh, that one, that one is now mine'?
Nat, I'm going to be honest, this question provoked something of an existential crisis. so I went back through, like, 20 years of fandom favorites to see if there's a pattern.
Spoiler: there isn't, apart from a perennial need to be different. This is kind of long .
2001 (ish) - Lord of the Rings is coming out, and you are either a Legolas or Aragorn girl. I am deep in my 'not like the other girls' phase and decide Boromir is actually the superior choice here. (This leads me to watch A LOT of period dramas that are probably not appropriate for for me at this age, including Clarissa and Lady Chatterley's Lover.) It also leads me to the Sharpe books, which are great and awesome. Richard Sharpe doesn't necessarily do anything for me as a character, but that gets me into Hornblower, which gets me into the Aubreyad, which leads me to read a lot about the Napoleonic Wars in high school. Cliff-diving into a different historical period is now something I do every single summer.
I also spend about 5 years (2008-2013) writing a 225,000 word fanfic in which Boromir doesn't die.
2010-2015
Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) is really only in the army a brief while but who can say no to the blue eyes and the absolute vibe he has going with Mary?
During the Downton phase I decide to raid the library for other period dramas, again, and watch The Forsyte Saga. Soames Forsyte is not a man you love, but Damian Lewis has A Face and I know he was on Band of Brothers, which the library perennially never has a copy of.
2011
I finally watch Band of Brothers in its entirety my senior year of college and am a little disappointed I appear to be missing large parts of the story. (Future rewatches will explain that this is actually a feature of the show, not a bug.) My recollections of this are hazy, but I'm fairly certain my favorite character the first time I watched this was Lewis Nixon (Ron Livingston). He's dark-haired, he's funny, he's an absolute mess with a trust fund. Dick Winters (Damian Lewis) also has one hell of a face. He's a red-head, he's in charge of everyone else, he doesn't say much, and he is tall. I know there must be fic for this show but am also very, very sure it is shippy in a direction I do not want to read, so I do not go looking for it.
TURN - 2014-2017
Ben Tallmadge (Seth Numrich) is the guy to watch on TURN: he's a lieutenant, he's tall, he struggles with rules, but the entire fandom is also crazy about him and the leading queen bee in the OC end of that fandom is a real pain about it, so I decide I will not be writing for him no matter what it costs me to hold off admitting I want to. However, in the next episode we meet his best friend, Caleb Brewster (Daniel Henshall) who is short, bearded, dark-haired and chaotic. The moment he comes onscreen I love him. Sadly, no one is reading fic for him and this project is abandoned.
In Season 3, we meet the Marquis de Lafayette. Historical Lafayette is a tall, awkward redhead in need of a father figure who makes up for war experience with boundless enthusiasm. His letters home are adorable. Show Lafayette (Ben Wiles) is tall and enthusiastic. I love him anyway and I make it everyone's problem for, like, a year.
2016-2017 - Mercy Street
Henry Hopkins (Luke Macfarlane) is a military chaplain in a hotel-turned Union hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. He's tall, he's a little tortured, and he has a knack for putting others first. Wrestling with some past choices, his romance with Emma Green, the privileged daughter of the family who owned the hotel, is sweet and full of pining. I write so much fix-it fic for them it's not even funny. (I love this show because the female characters I love come pre-installed. Please watch this.)
2016 - Dunkirk
I see this movie three times in theaters and love it more each time. Collins (Jack Lowden) is a blonde RAF flyboy with a very adorable face. (Tom Glynn Carney is also a face I like but he's on a backburner for a bit.) I write a lot of fic about it and affectionately refer to this as my first Planes Go Zoom phase.
2020
Two weeks into the pandemic I decide rewatching Band of Brothers is a good idea and buy the book and the DVD set from my local secondhand bookshop like I am doing a drug deal in a parking lot. Two weeks after that I am writing a fanfic for Dick Winters (Damian Lewis) because I am a loon who likes men in charge and painfully slow burns.
2021
Still in the middle of a pandemic I decide to watch The Pacific, because I make good decisions, apparently. Hoosier Smith (Jacob Pitts) is a taciturn, wise-cracking friend of Leckie's who is joked about as being the pretty one. He is. Andrew Haldane (Scott Gibson) is quiet, unassuming, and in charge, and played college football for Bowdoin. Very dad energy. Extremely charming. Dead in three episodes as history intended. Fix-it fic incoming.
2022 Top Gun Maverick comes out. Jake "Hangman" Seresin (played by Glen Powell, who I loved in Hidden Figures and The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society) has a jawline you could cut something with and an attitude. My friends think I am mental. Second Planes Go Zoom phase coupled with Devotion, which comes out shortly after.
SAS Rogue Heroes comes out. I have been really looking forward to seeing Tom Glynn Carney in something else and he delivers. Mike Sadler is blond, extremely good at his job, not capable of suffering fools, and far too attractive for the desert.
2024
We do not even make it out of trailer season before I realize I still have a Thing (TM) for Callum Turner's face, which I have known since he was Theseus Scamander in Fantastic Beasts. Watching The Boys in the Boat before this all starts doesn't help - he has regrettably blond hair but thighs for days and shoulders you could hang the universe on. John "Bucky" Egan, is tall, dark-haired, incredibly generous spirited and nominally in charge. I want all of it. The rest of the fandom does too. I try to make peace with that and write anyway. Third Planes Go Zoom phase.

okay so... give us the list of folk horror films that are good please. 🤲
ok this took a while but here we go! it ended up being more than 10 lol
the wicker man (1973) - the definitive british folk horror film. midsommar wants to be the wicker man soooo bad it's embarrassing
the blood on satan's claw (1971) - i haven't seen this one in a long time but it's a pretty chilling early 70s british film centring around a demonic cult in 18th century england
night of the demon (1957) - ok so you know the sample at the beginning of hounds of love by kate bush, where a voice says "it's in the trees! it's coming!" that's from this film!!!! just barely in the folk horror category but it's based on a story by m.r. james who is one of THE iconic folk horror writers so imo it counts
a warning to the curious (1972) - also based on a story by m.r. james, this was part of a long-running annual bbc series called 'a ghost story for christmas'. it's only about 30 minutes long and very dated but I think that gives it extra charm and even a bit of extra creepiness
the juniper tree (1990) - icelandic retelling of the grimm's fairy tale, starring björk and featuring an incredibly beautiful soundtrack
the company of wolves (1984) - based on the short stories of angela carter in her compilation 'the bloody chamber'. this is probably more fairytale horror than folk horror but i LOVE this film and if you like intense psychosexual overtones and incredible practical effects then you will too
the devil rides out (1968) - classic hammer horror with christopher lee so you know it's gonna be a banger
wake wood (2009) - probably the most underrated irish horror film of all time (and that's saying a lot bc there really aren't many). really scary film with the "came back but wrong" premise. watch this one
the hallow (2013) - another one from ireland. it's not amazing but including it bc i don't think i've ever seen another horror film fully embrace the idea that faeries are actually terrifying. practical effects are also cool as hell
kill list (2011) - i'll be honest with you I didn't understand half of what was happening in this film and it's been on my to-rewatch list for ages. it starts out as a cerebral cop drama and descends into absolute madness like it literally has to be seen to be believed
a field in england (2013) - probably the modern folk horror film that comes closest to what british directors were doing with the genre in the 70s. it's trippy, impenetrable and often kinda funny, i really recommend this one
pyewacket (2017) - offbeat canadian indie film that you will either find really creepy or really boring. i thought the ending in particular was incredibly chilling
the ritual (2017) - i feel like everyone has seen this film at this point but i had to recommend it anyway bc it blends folk horror with monster movie and it's super fucking terrifying. i also highly recommend the novel by adam neville which if anything is even scarier
the witch (2015) - again everyone has seen this and has an opinion but it's one of my favourite horror films of all time
pet sematary (1989) - the iconic stephen king classic that is still really scary to this day
pumpkinhead (1988) - another film that is super underrated imo. people who love the creature design in the ritual should remember the OG
men (2022) - controversial opinion perhaps but i think this film was actually kinda brilliant. if nothing else it is super twisted and horrifying
on my list of i haven't watched this yet but people say it's really good: penda's fen (1974), witchfinder general (1968), the lair of the white worm (1988) (i know i know i call myself a ken russell fan and i haven't even seen lair of the white worm)
a radio play: children of the stones on bbc radio 4 (available on spotify hee hee)
and a couple of books: fairy tale (1996) by alice thomas ellis, and the owl service (1967) by alan garner. the owl service is for kids but it really did a number on me aged 12 and it still holds up as a classic. I think there's an old bbc series but i haven't got round to watching it yet :)

Every Taika Waititi film ranked by how much I liked them, while I count down the days to the release of Next Goal Wins (my most anticipated movie of the year!)
DISCLAIMER: I like all Taika Waititi films, so don't get angry at me
7. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Tumblr media
Fun and colourful, I love Korg, Jeff Goldblum is great, but to me this is just a Marvel movie. Sorry, Marvel fans, this movie was just OK.
6. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Tumblr media
More fun and colourful than Ragnarok, loved Christian Bale, loved the kids, loved Jane Foster's arc (I thought it was well handled!). There was a bit too much Korg, I admit. People say this movie had too many jokes and didn't take itself seriously enough. Well, of course it didn't! It's a movie about gods and aliens and stuff in space! Honestly it was a blast and I liked it better than the third one. I said what I said.
5. JoJo Rabbit (2019)
Tumblr media
This is a great film, we all know that. It speaks really well of Taika's filmography that it's so down on the list. It was hilarious and adorable and important. I feel like the comedy-drama could have been better balanced, I couldn't fully connect emotionally. Still, it was great and hilarious, the parody aspects were really well done and I really liked it.
4. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Tumblr media
This one is really funny, it doesn't get enough credit for how funny it is. I loved the too leads, especially Sam Neill, I wasn't sure how well he'd fit into Taika's style, but he was fantastic. A really fun film.
3. Eagle vs Shark (2007)
Tumblr media
All Eagle vs Shark haters are wrong, this film is great. Lily is the most adorable person, Jarrod is a dick but played with so much love that you can't help but emphatize with him and hope that he gets a redemption. The story was so sweet, I was actually, like, 'awww'ing out lout at times. Also the small town vibes and the awkwardness, and the feeling of having a giant crush on someone you have never really spoken to, it's all so real, I really love it.
2. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Tumblr media
That I didn't rank this as number 1 is a surprise even to myself. This is one of my favourite movies and maybe my favourite comedy film of all time. I love the show as well, but to be honest I think the film is much much better. It's just- the vibes, man. The documentary aspect is fantastic. Also, Stu.
1. Boy (2010)
Tumblr media
This movie feels like being told a secret, it's so personal. It is small and self-contained, but at the same time it creates a world so huge and lived-in that it's hard to believe it wasn't really filmed in the eighties. The kids are adorable, the scenery is so beautiful, the story is so heartfelt and full of emotions it genuinely made me cry (not for anything in particular, just everything had been done with so much love, it made me feel so many emotions and they could only escape through tears). It is Taika Waititi's masterpiece. Where he usually leans more into the comedy, here he lets the seriousness take over when necessary, and it really works so well. I just love this film, it is amazing, go watch it right now.
...and that's it. Taika Waititi is probably my favorite director at the moment, he's got a vision and is very good at realising it. He writes heartfelt and funny stories, likeable characters, amazing dialoge and his films always look very pretty. Totally recoment any of the ones in this list!

Nancy, is this like chris usual thing to bring a gf to Tara's Halloween party? Cause i never see his past gf attending this party before
The honest answer to this question is that we don't have enough data to say yes or no. Here's the data we have:
Jenny never went to a Tara Halloween party. In 2016, she was working on a movie, so was not available. In 2017, both she and Chris were in ATL for work, and instead of going back to MA the weekend of Tara's Halloween party, he went to D.C. instead to see Jenny do a stand-up performance:
Tumblr media
With Minka in 2012-2013 they were L.A. based, so did not attend Halloween parties on the East Coast, as he was filming Playing It Cool around L.A.. In 2012 he and Minka went to the famous annual party thrown at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. They were split up before Halloween 2013.
Tumblr media
If he took "normie" girlfriends from MA to Tara's parties in other years, which I assume might have happened, we never saw it. The only pics Tara would post to IG would be of him and her posing together in costume.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZACHRII!
Tumblr media
So yeah, this is Zachrii's sixth birthday! He was created all the way back in 2017 as my first Kirby OC of mine!
Tumblr media
This is a picture of him I did in 2020 for boredom and as a first try to do digital art of him. All the way back when his name was Zachary.
Zachary was his first name, although I changed it to Zachrii, since that would made the name more original, like how they do in Disney Movies and such.
If you don't know, purple is my favorite color, besides blue, so, why shouldn't I make my first OC purple?
Another fun fact: Zachrii was desgined at first to fill the character of a pirate and use it as a plot device in a Kirby Pirate Themed Comic, called ''A Royal Expedition'' but, ever since I drew him in that W.I.P comic, I loved him ever since.
To be honest, I never knew that this OC of mine was going to be regconized if even slightly by other artists, but, ever since I inclued him in @stardustshimmer OC party, things seemed to get better for him! Fanart and stuff came down the way, and I must say, thank you so much for that fanart!
Happy Birthday, fuzzy pirate!

I now share a piece from the Trini essay I have been writing for four years:
Dean Israelite said the scene was “pivotal” for the entire movie. I take this quote directly from an article for The Hollywood Reporter: “For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is,” Israelite tells The Hollywood Reporter. “She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”
So the director of the movie said she’s questioning her queer identity. He sees it. He’s saying she’s meant to be unsure and questioning. They knew what they were doing. They’re showing rep for those teenagers that don’t know, but think they are different. This is awesome!
In addition, one of the Power Rangers 2017 writers, John Gatins, said on comicbook.com, "I wanted to feel like these teenagers were reflective of 2017. That was my continued argument – that come on, it's 2017. Do I think that in time to come we'll have a whole team of gay or questioning superheroes? Sure, why not. It's the world we live in and we need it to reflect it. And I think we handled it with as much grace as we could. And [actress] Becky G. did such an amazing job and it was important to her too."
As for Becky G, she said a lot about Trini and continued even after we knew there would be no sequel. Before that though she said to Pride Magazine, "The truth is with something like that, you don’t just wake up and know. It’s a process. And so, as time goes by, if we make Power Rangers 2, 3, 4...I’m excited to see how she grows." Trini was at the beginning. More was coming. They would have given us more. She also said to US magazine, “Knowing that my character mattered [was huge],” she explained. “I wanted her to be a true reflection of someone who is discovering more about herself. On top of that, being [given] this responsibility of, like, saving the world and being a superhero, but making sure she was [still herself]. Trini was, like, a real girl — a real girl in high school, figuring out who she is and where she’s going with her life.” In the same interview she also reiterated, ““I think what she was experiencing isn’t something that you just wake up and know. And even if you did, it’s not something that’s easy to talk about especially at her age given the area she grew up in and also the cultural circumstances that she grew up in,” she continued. “And so just making it just very, very honest and raw, like, for the individuals who read that [about] Trini, they knew. And for people who didn’t, it went right over their heads. And I think that that was what was really honest about her character.”
Becky knew how she was playing Trini and how important it was to represent questioning folks. She got it and she delivered. All of these quotes just go to show that they weren’t expecting to showcase to us someone with a label that was ready to come out. They wanted to show that she was unsure. That it was a possibility. And that she was scared to voice it. And they showed all of that.
Excerpt from "Trini Finds Her Tribe" by me.

JILLIAN STYLES TAKES A LIE DETECTOR TEST | VOGUE ✓ VOGUE 13M VIEWS || 8M LIKES || 2 HOURS AGO
Jillian sat in front of the camera, a small smile playing on her lips, her hands neatly sprawled on her lap as the instructor sets up the detector. The interviewer speaks, “So, how are you feeling?”
Jillian smiles confidently, “Pretty good. I have the jitters, though. The happy jitters. I’ve never taken one of these tests before so ‘m pretty excited!”
The interviewer laughs, “Good.”
The instructor attaches a finger clip onto Jillian’s index finger and sits back down, looking at the screen before giving the interviewer a thumbs up as a signal that he’s ready. After, the crew starts up the camera and Jillian speaks.
“Hey guys! My name is Jillian Styles and I am here with Vogue to do a lie detector test! I’m gonna be completely honest when I say I’m very excited. I haven’t done one of these before.”
The studio radiated positivity just from her personality, the smile on her lips brightening the room. The interviewer smiles. “Alright, so I’m pretty sure you know how this works. I ask you questions and you answer them honestly, well, as honest as you can, and our instructor will tell us if you lied or not.”
Jillian smiled at the camera before making eye contact with the interviewer. “First, we’ll start with the basics. What is your name?”
Jillian looks at the camera. “My name is Jillian Rosen Styles.”
It’s quiet for a quick second before the instructor lifts up a thumb, “Truth.”
Jillian smiles as the interviewer asks another question. “What is your profession?”
“I am a film producer who makes clothes as a backup.” Another ‘truth’ rolls through and the interviewer wraps up the basic questions.
“Alright, now onto the more interesting questions.”
Jillian smirks confidently. “Let’s do it.”
“So, as many may know, you had the famous singer Harry Styles fall in love for you in a heartbeat,” Jillian blushed at the notice of her husband. “Care to tell us how you first met?”
“Me and Harry met on the set of Dunkirk, a movie he was filming from 2016-2017, and I was in charge of costume design and management. I was the one who made sure the costumes fit, there were no casualties with them, and made sure that they were comfortable. I bumped into Harry the day of his fitting, where he spilt a cup of coffee onto me.” She giggled, “He turned into a blushing mess at that point, apologized profusely and wouldn’t let it go until I let him buy me a coffee, that time he didn’t spill it on me though.”
The instructor was silent for a second before giving a thumbs up, “She’s telling the truth.”
The interviewer laughs, “sounds like something straight from a romance novel.”
Jillian laughs, “Right!”
“So, a question everyone has been wanting to know, did Harry fall first or did you?”
Jillian was silent for a moment, “Harry.”
The instructor gave a thumbs down, Jillian blushing brightly when he spoke, “false.” She hid her face from embarrassment as the interviewer laughed.
“That’s adorable!” Once she settled, the interviewer asked another question. “Did Harry write any songs about you?”
Jillian breathed deeply, “Yeah.” She spoke, shrugging like it was nothing, a difference to her blushing face. “Maybe a couple.”
The interviewer gave a thumbs up.
“Did you write any songs about Harry?”
Jillian nodded, “Of course I have. Plenty.”
Another thumbs up.
The interviewer’s eyebrows shot up, “Really?”
“Mhm. I have one that’s finished and one that’s half-way finished. I haven’t let Harry listen to any of them, though. He’s pretty sad about that, but I want him to hear it when I sing it.”
“She’s telling the truth.”
From home, Harry sits in front of his computer screen, smiling softly at the face of his wife, the cold metal ring on his left hand a symbol of their love, his heart bursting at the seems at her reddened cheeks. Her big bright eyes, her full lips, her soft skin, her rosy cheeks. Everything about her made her seem so elegant.
The interviewer speaks, “You and Harry seem to be pretty in love! I mean, he proposed after 8 months of dating! Are there any children in the near future?”
Jillian smiles dashingly, “Me and Harry have talked about children for a while now, and we’ve both agreed that having a little mini him or me running around our house wouldn’t be too bad. But, for right now, we’re enjoying life with just us. We’re not fully ready for such a big responsibility at the moment.”
The instructor puts a thumbs up, “Truth.”
“Nice, nice. I can agree with you that having a mini Harry Styles running around would be so adorable.”
Jillian giggles, “and hectic. That man is always so energetic, it’s incredible. I don’t think I’m ready for two of them!”
The crew around the studio started to laugh as well, a positive energy flowing through the white room. The interviewer settles down before speaking again, “Well, it looks like that’s the end of my questions. Thank you again, Jillian, for taking the time to come out here and doing this.”
Jillian smiles at the camera, “Thank you for inviting me! This was so fun! I’d say I’m pretty much an honest person, and I’m so glad I was able to do this!”
The video ended with a little snippet of banter with Jillian and the instructor as he takes the finger clip off of her finger, and a small montage of pictures and videos of her and Harry.
They seemed like the most adorable couple ever.

sims tag
Thank you to @gorgosim and @memoirsofasim for the tag 😊 I had this all written out before but accidentally deleted it and only just got round to it again!
1. What’s your favourite sims death? I rarely play a save long enough for any sims to die. I like the vending machine though.
2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match? Neither.
3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight? I don't usually play any household long enough for it to happen tbh.
4. Do you use move objects? Yeah I had a little phase recently of not using it but now I am.
5. Favorite mod? I don't use any.
6. First expansion/game/stuff pack you got? I think it was City Living.
7. Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing? I've never actually said it but I think I would say it like as in living.
8. Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made? Sunisa Pengngam. I didn't exactly make her but she did get a pretty big makeover after joining my Villareal gameplay as a maid townie so it's close enough.
9. Have you made a simself? No.
10. What sim traits do you give yourself? evil, self-absorbed, proper
11. Which is your favorite EA hair color? I don't have a favourite.
12. Favorite EA hair? I've got a soft spot for the classic chunky basegame hairs 😁
13. Favorite life stage? Toddlers are good fun, haven't really played infants yet. Most of the sims I make seem to be adults, don't know if that says something.
14. Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay? I like both, spend much more time with gameplay though.
15. Are you a CC creator? Nah.
16. Do you have any simblr friends/a sim squad? I really appreciate the people who take the time to like/reblog/comment on my posts and all my mutuals seem very nice 😊
17. What’s your favorite game? (1, 2, 3, or 4)  TS4 is the only one I've played.
18. Do you have any sims merch? Nope.
19. Do you have a YouTube for sims? No.
20. How has your “sim style” changed throughout your years of playing?  I used to use cc, so I suppose that's a pretty big change since I went cc free, other than that not much I don't think. I'm pretty influenced by the EA style of the basegame and early promotional sims.
21. What’s your Origin ID? worriedheart
22. Who’s your favorite CC creator?  @dragonflydaydreamer was kind enough to make a cc painting out of a screenshot I took which has a special place in my game, otherwise I don't use any cc.
23. How long have you had a simblr? Since 2017.
24. How do you edit your pictures? I add a border and make collages using photoscape, apart from that my screenshots are unedited.
25. What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next? Don't really care to be honest I haven't got all the packs as it is and regret paying money for some of the ones I do have! I'd like it to be something weird and unexpected though.
26. What expansion/game/stuff pack is your favorite so far? Expansion: City Living, will always be my favourite
Game Pack: StrangerVille, it's a bit different and as basic as the story is it does bring the world to life a little
Stuff Pack: I like Paranormal, always quite liked Movie Hangout too
I know this has been going round a while and I've totally lost track of who's done it so anyway I will tag @occultpuppy @akitasimblr @devotedsims @lolathelotus @nurbsfirby @nuttydragonbird @dragonflydaydreamer @myverycoolnickname @plumbobster @breakfastwithbeb @emasdf @satureja13 @whatawhim @introvertedfox @sweetpyxels
As always feel free to ignore if you already did this/prefer not to 😊

soooo idk who else to ask but like what happened to all the big names during the sebaciel renaissance?? I’ve kinda been off tumble pretty much since nsfw ban, but what happened to blogs like chromehopelite and ciel’s lingerire or vexing young master? Im sure there’s others I’m missing I just can’t remember but I feel like no one uploads on the sebaciel ao3 tag as much as it used to in like 2017 and 2018. hopefully the fandom will come alive again with a new season?
Hello! I have no idea what happened to Vexing Young Master but as for the others, as far as I know, Ciels Lingerie got obliterated again and again, both here and on twitter, and I guess at one point they gave up. Their latest twitter seems to have been hacked by crypto bros.
Chromehoplite is still around, just not in the fandom anymore. And who can blame them, considering the amount of vile messages they got on a daily basis.
To be honest, I've been active in the tumblr fandom for... Idk how long, before BoC, and it was the most prolific back when BoC aired. After that, it's been a downward spiral. It got a bit refreshment through BoM and BotA but not in the same way. Back during BoM, the fandom felt huge.
I think it's a natural development. Manga fandoms are most active when there's a fairly recent tv anime adaptation (movies just don't do it like tv shows). There hasn't been one in a long time, and additionally, we've had to put up with our main characters virtually missing from the manga for about half a decade now. The twin reveal was that long ago!
So I completely understand that the fandom has become the way it is now. I consider myself crazy for still sticking around the way I do (but I have no plans of changing that) but most people aren't as weird about Kuroshitsuji as I am.
That being said, I also believe that the fandom will have a real renaissance when the show airs again. I never expected that twitter-borne renaissance to hold on anyway because it was mostly just born out of spite against antis (which is valid but not enough to give people the motivation to stick with a manga that's barely progressing over the course of years). Chrome and the others were there before the twitter renaissance and they were there after it too to some extent, but I guess lives go on, priorities and interests change and also, fandom can just be really nasty and detrimental to your mental health sometimes.
Maybe we'll see some familiar people come back when the new show airs, who knows!
I hope my answer helped!
P.S.: from the perspective of a creator myself, the disappearance of popular creators coincides with a strong decrease of engagement with authors' and artists' works. You could say it's a hen and egg kind of situation but I think the common denominator is the lack of progress in the manga and everyone's fatigue with everything. In any case, from a creator's POV it does feel kind of discouraging sometimes when you feel like your skill has increased over time but people don't interact with it as much as they used to. Like, I know it's the size of the fandom but I sometimes think, "has my art gotten that bad?" and I mean I don't draw for attention or else I'd draw Genshin or sth like that but it is a little difficult to process anyway. Sorry for the rant.

do people really believe Louis was clueless that 1d would go on a hiatus and he genuinely believed the band would get back together and that's why he didn't think of his solo career? meanwhile the other boys did but no one thought to inform him? I've seen so many of those takes on twitter and even on tumblr too which they basically pity poor louis like he is naive or worse, an idiot. meanwhile louis is the smartest dude that knows the industry like the palm of his hand and is always two steps ahead. they really underestimate Louis and i don't blame them cause that's the light louis paints himself in that interview for his own reasons which once again we can't know. but it still shocks me how easily manipulated people's opinions are.
I just- I think people are jumping to all kinds of weird conclusions because of this interview and I don't think what he said is even that telling?! He probably never really spoke about the hiatus so openly, but he definitely said similar things before around 2017-2018. It's common knowledge that Louis had a hard time accepting the hiatus.
I don't think Louis was blindsided and I don't think that's what he's saying AT ALL. C'mon, Louis didn't sit in the corner and let people decide things for him and that's not what he's implying here. I just think that what he's saying is that he didn't want it and that it was hard for him because he didn't really have a clear vision of what his solo career may be like, Liam and Harry signed big deals right away and that's scary as fuck if you have a history like Louis has. It doesn't mean they all wanted the hiatus except him, it doesn't mean people were not telling him things. I think all of them would like to stay in the band... but for me, it's pretty clear that at some point the situation in the band became unsustainable for some of them. I mean, they all knew how complicated it would be to take a break, I don't think any of them could predict what would happen and how things would go as solo artists. And that's what I think he's saying when he talks about the fact he wanted more direct answers when the hiatus came up, but I don't think anyone had the answer, they just had to go for it. And Louis doesn't like that, he's a practical person, he wants a plan, he wants things his way.
So although I think his answer is honest, it makes people read between the lines and lean towards - once again - an angle where Harry was the one who wanted the hiatus and Louis was miserable about it. And that's unfortunate and couldn't be further from the truth. None of them ever said the hiatus came specifically from one of them, Louis never blamed Harry for that. And Harry never said he wanted to "break free" from the band... tabloids were saying he wanted to go solo since 2013, but the one who dropped the band was Zayn. Tabloids kept saying Harry wanted to be a solo musician, but the first thing he did when they finally went solo was to act in a movie instead. And to this day, he has nothing but amazing things to say about the others and his time in the band. So it really sucks how they're willing to play along with all of these stupid rad narrative...

Level 1: Let's-a-go easy with some illuminated Mario!
What I want to explore at least partly over the course of Nintendo-vember is the fact, that Dobson was biased with a capital b when it came to videogames and Nintendo. To be more specific, Dobson not only hated people who played anything but Nintendo, acting like PS3 users are the scum of the earth (which we can see examples of a lot near the end of the month), but he was also very opinionated what counts as “the true and honest” depictions of his favorite Nintendo characters.
Again, something more explored down the line soon, but to give at least one example for how even the slightest “deviation” from Dobson’s own interpretation can result in him getting pissed, only for things to backfire on him in some sense (partly a cosmic one) let me turn back time a bit to the November of 2017.
Almost 6 years ago, it was announced that Illumination, the studio behind the Despicable Me movies and some really shitty Dr. Seuss based works, would head the animation work on Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros movie. And people were pissed.
Tumblr media
Many of them believing that the studio would ruin their favorite videogame character and produce something that was of great disservice to him. And that was something people claimed, before even the voice cast was announced and everyone had a mental breakdown over Chris Pratt voicing Mario.
youtube
For your sanity though, don't click on the vidoe of that fat slob from Boston who is more of a disservice to animation than Live Action Disney is currently
Now to be fair, I am myself aware of the quality of Illumination up until the Mario movie came out. The Despicable Me and Minions movies, plus Secret Life of Pets, having been the most successful endeavors of the company, while also creating some rather annoying, though in my opinion funny cartoon slapstick characters. But honestly, I never thought that Illumination doing the Mario movie, could possibly be the worst thing to ever happen. At the very least, even if the company had fucked up royally with Dr. Seuss related content, they actually have some understanding of cartoon slapstick in their work and can in my opinion create some very colorful movies. And let us be real here, Super Mario has never been the most “adult” or deep franchise on the planet. So as long as Nintendo would keep them on the leash (which they did in the end) I doubted the movie would be utter shit. I at least did not expect it to be the Teen Titans Go of Nintendo, dumb like Boss Baby or unfocused and insulting like Wonder Park.
Tumblr media
And lo and behold, the movie came out and minor things aside (like using Take on me as a pop song in the background at one moment) it captured the essence of Mario, was very colorful and a smash hit. To the point it was up until Barbie came along still the most successful movie of 2023 and is the third highest crossing animated movie of all time. With the place actually being the second, if the Lion King remake from 2019 wouldn’t be technically considered animated. Heck, you could actually call it the most succesful animated movie of all time currently, if you also decide to look at the list in such a way, that "sequels"/continuations ofalready established IPs don't count.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I am trying to say is, in hindsight, many people should have just simply tried to be calm and see where things were heading.Give Illumination the benefit of the doubt. Particularly if they decided to first think about what was likely going to happen and analyze the pro and cons of Illumination doing the movie.
But fuck using your brain when your name is Andrew Dobson.
Dobson took genuine offense to the idea of Illumination doing the movie and as such made a “mock art” of what Mario would likely look in their art style.
Tumblr media
There was just a tinsy winsy problem with it. The artwork in itself….
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turned out to be better looking, than most things Dobson did at the time.
Tumblr media
No, seriously. Considering the lack of a decent art output at the time aside of shitting on nerds via SYAC strips, this, for what is obviously meant to take the piss out on Illumination’s art style reserved for the Minions, actually looks rather decent. Sure, Mario looks like a tic tac, but for a “quick” sketch, it looks nice. Mario looks -unlike Dobbear in 95% of the strips- actually happy by the way he smiles as well as very cartoonish. And considering that the blood and soul of Mario is kinda in the cartoonish nature of the game series -as evident by how ridiculously Mario Wonder is currently- Dobson in my opinion captured here the soul of Mario better than he did in other pics he did way back in the earlier 2000s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though to be fair, these pics look decent enough and at least Dobson was experimenting with different styles back then. Perhaps his cartoonish style would have worked best with Nintendo, if he refined it just right.
Which you know, kinda defeats the “purpose” of the picture if you ask me. I mean, it is obvious Dobson just did it to vent and piss on the fact that a company he considered “inferior” to other animation studios, would bring his favorite videogame character on the big screen for the first time since that Bob Hoskins movie. But if he wanted to mock the idea, he failed. Simply because in his sketch he doesn’t really “highlight” why Illumination being behind Mario would be bad. Not helped by the fact Dobson lacked giving more context why in his opinion that was a bad idea. And the few posts he did, painted him just as hating Charles Martinet and believing Charles would be the main voice of the characters in the movie
Tumblr media
An as stated earlier, in hindsight, any “criticism” or fear Dobson might have had, proved in my opinion invalid in the end. The movie was not only a success, but it also paid tribute to his “precious” Mario is from Brooklyn background.
Frankly, the only thing I can see in the pic I would criticize is that Dobson a) gave Mario four fingers despite the fact he should know by now he has five (though that may be a cartoony jab at the Minions. Though even that jab is half assed, cause if he wanted to emulate their design, he should have given Mario three instead of four digits) and b) Mario being likely completely bald under that cap. The later just doesn’t fit entirely. Which, considering the Minions are mostly bald, may have been the intention by Dobson, to create an uncanny effect. Unfortunately, the rest of the artwork balances it out mostly, so on average the sketch ends up being visually more pleasing than anything.
Honestly though, the picture’s existence does highlight one thing more than anything: That Dobson would rather create something out of spite and hatred, rather than a genuine sense of enjoyment. That and if Ilumination being announced as a company to animate the movie, I wonder how he reacted in light of the casting or other Mario related news. Like can you imagine how livid he must have been when Mario+Rabbids by Ubisoft was announced and became popular?

Films that you could spend Christmas watching
7 from this year, 7 from years past
2023 Films you may have missed, which is a crime!
7. Theater Camp
The lightest fare on this list, and still manages to punch in the gut. This one’s for the annoying musical theatre kids to have some healing and representation, which I’m all for because I am one. Star-making turn by Noah Galvin.
6. Poor Things
Well written, gorgeously performed, an art piece of complete wonder. Massive trigger warnings for Sex — the way it’s explored in this film is prolific. There isn’t, to my recollection, anything non-consensual, but it does feel very old-school feminism — liberation by way of sex. I will grant it one honor, it doesn’t feel very male-gaze-y (until it tries to do Lesbianism), which is a massive feat for a male director to accomplish.
5. Strange Way of Life
I have publicly and privately said enough about this masterpiece, it’s everywhere now, go watch it.
4. Passages
If you’ve ever seen or read the play C*ck, it’s basically that, but even more intensely frustrating, and ultimately, the two lovers both get their justice against the terrible, bad bisexual man who simply “cannot choose”. The play is one of my favorites, this film has immense patience and fantastic writing — but I am looking forward to the movie about very boring bisexuals who are happy in their relationship… or the more common archetype, not often explored — the bisexual cringe-fail loser who gets absolutely 0 play. I shall keep waiting.
3. The Sweet East
Bonkers. If you can find a screening (New York, looking at u!), run, and I mean truly run. Although trigger warnings for graphic Violence of every kind, because it’s a critique of America. No spoilers, get got.
2. Bottoms
A turning point in modern cinema toward the future I’ve been excited to witness. Deeply hilarious, deeply serious, and gorgeous to look at.
1. Past Lives
There is nothing I can say about this masterpiece that hasn’t already been said. You will cry if you allow yourself to, but more than anything, you will be romanced.
Old Films I discovered this year, which you may also like,
in no particular order
7. 8 1/2 (1963)
What no one tells you about the validity of the claims around this being one of the best films ever made, aside from that it is blatantly a vanity project for Fellini, and that directors like to big up projects they feel they would want to make about themselves — is that Marcello Mastroianni is incredibly beautiful to look at, and beautiful people will smooth over any incongruence. It’s also heartbreakingly honest, in a way that few storytellers ever are. I don’t often give men a pass for bad behavior just because they know they’re behaving badly — but Guido is the exception. Also, I maybe want to be him a little bit but we stay silly.
6. Cabaret (1972)
I don’t need to say anything about this masterpiece other than it’s more timely to watch now than ever. FOSSEEEEEE!!!!!
5. Shiva Baby (2020)
The way Emma Seligman makes films will be studied. She has, in only two features, shown an incredible mastery of suspense and stakes, the kind that doesn’t make me want to leave the cinema or switch the TV off. The language, both visual and verbal, that she uses — I’m a superfan and I’m not leaving until they turn on the lights. This film is absolutely stacked with ideas, tension, heart, authenticity and humor.
4. Atomic Blonde (2017)
Even my one gripe with the film was resolved by the very end. I stumbled upon it recently and lost my mind, and had that moment where I felt I was witnessing one of my favorite things ever, that I’d be referencing for a long, long time. It gives kick-ass, it gives beauty and cinematography, of course it gives John Wick and Violence, but I actually adore most of David Leitch’s filmography so far — the kind of action films I respond to most.
3. To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)
This one is for the girls who really don’t want to watch a film where things go terribly wrong — where even the bad things go well? That’s this film, and it’s the most gorgeous, heartwarming cotton candy. Also, John Leguizamo Marry Me challenge.
2. Bound (1996)
So i’m in the middle of a bit of a Wachowski’s era, and it started with this film, which unfolds with a terrifying pace once it gets going, and has a very 90’s understated but still arthouse visual language. Also, Lesbians! Which is always a welcome achievement.
1. Frances Ha (2012)
Feral Girls, rise — many films saw me and understood who I wanted to be, but very few of them knew me as I am. This one? Greta knows me.

last anon is WILDLY overestimating how famous the other members of the cast and crew are. Tom is “my entire family knows who he is famous”. Tom (and Amy) chose Paul King because he has a specific light heartedness to his films. If he wanted to make a film about Astaire’s obsessiveness, he would’ve asked for (and gotten) Damien Chazelle.
Tom is the most famous actor under 30. Timmy is also famous but he’s not “my entire family knows who he is famous”. With how much the box office has been underperforming since COVID, I’m sure most directors are EAGER to give Tom his first bona fide live action critical hit outside of Spider-man since 2017. Because THAT movie is going to MAKE money.
Tumblr media
And can we just say? The main reason why Tom is so famous IS because of Spider-Man/Marvel/Disney. Like, let's just be honest. That role opened up TREMENDOUS doors for him. HE might have still been doing indie films (nothing wrong with that!) had it not been for Spider-Man.
I know we all want to see Tom outside of the suit (in more ways than one lol 👀🤭), but we DO have to give credit where credit is due...and the main reason why Tom is so famous under 30 IS because of the fact that he has played Spider-Man in like 5 films. More than any other Spider-Man actor. So people definitely recognize him.
So, we can't sneeze at that fact. We need to appreciate that as well.
Plus, he's wildly charismatic, so that doesn't hurt lol. But imagine where his career would have been had he NOT taken the Spider-Man role?? So you guys just have to trust that Tom knows what he's doing and he's choosing the roles that speak to him. 😊
