Taking myself away from the Twitter post I was zoned out on, I opened the text I had been waiting for.

~ Hell yeah! Beer, wine, or whiskey?

Before even locking my phone, it vibrated again.

~ Why not all three ;)?

Grinning like an overexcited kid to myself, I immediately replied.

~ You tryna get me drunk Magee? ;)

He started typing almost...too quickly.

~ Will it make you fall in love w/ me already?

My chest suddenly swelled and got heavy, my heart fluttering with nerves. Was I stroking out?

~ You wish. I’ll see ya at 8.

After sending the last text, I plugged my phone in and rushed to the bathroom to shower..not waiting for him to reply.

It was a tweet...that’s how it started. I made a simple shitpost on Twitter about Ryan never expecting a reply and now here we are 4 months later staying true to our routine game nights.

Just as I was mentally cursing Ryan out for not being punctual, a knock came from the other side of my apartment door. The abrupt interruption rattled my core and it took me a moment before I finally brought myself to go answer it.

“Jesus christ Y/N.” Ryan groaned, pushing past me. “Took ya long enough.”

Rolling my eyes I let the door swing shut, mouthing “Gee Ryan, come on in” mockingly.

“You’re late.” I scolded following him into the kitchen, “So don’t give me any shit.”

I watched as he helped himself to my fridge, putting his case of beer inside. Crossing my arms, I leaned against the door frame.

“Planning on staying long I see.” I implied with a smirk about the copious amount of beer.

Ryan turned towards me, his eyes low. He was stoned, no wonder he took so long.

“Girl we got lots of weed to smoke and Halo to play.” He said with his heart melting chuckle. “I just came prepared!”

God I loved smoking pot with Ryan. He always got so lovey-dovey and was even more giggly than usual. We had been having “game night” on Thursday’s religiously ever since we found out we lived in the same city. We grew close super fast, but it wasn’t completely unbelievable. Our personalities meshed perfectly and damn if that boy didn’t know exactly how to make my stomach cramp up from laughter.

“I was gonna suggest smoking before we started, but by the looks of it you pre-gamed.” I snorted as I poured myself a glass of wine.

Ryan raised an eyebrow and scoffed as if what I said offended him. I looked up from my glass and smirked.

“Ryan your eyes are as red as the devil’s dick.” I stated, hiding a laugh as I watched him mindlessly interact with my cat.

“Ya know, Church would never disrespect me the way you do Y/N.” He muttered, scratching behind my fur kids ear. “Would ya Church?”

Rolling my eyes (again), I grabbed my glass of Cab and sauntered over towards Ryan.

“Yeah well Church licks his own ass so he’s not the best judge of character.” I whispered in his ear as I passed him. “Now let’s go Magee the bedroom awaits!”

Ryan grabbed at his heart and sucked in a sharp breath of air.

“Ohhhh-wee Y/N, I love when you say that.”

I pretended to vomit and punched his bicep before leading the way to my room.

“You’re so lucky I’m desperate for friends.” I joked.

My poor bong had finally been spent after being passed between the two of us over and over again. With heavy eyes I suggested we head back to the living room and after a very odd 5 minutes of silence, Ryan escaped whatever thought he had gotten lost in and followed me from my room.

“So,” Ryan exhaled, flopping down onto the couch. “I kick your ass THEN we do shots? Orrr do you wanna do shots first to lighten the blow which is me kicking your ass?”

“I fucking hateeee you.” I moaned, putting my hands around his throat to imitate choking him.

Ryan swatted my hands away, grabbing my wrists when I tried to resist.

God I was too stoned for him to be touching me this way...

“Even your cat knows that isn’t true.” He giggled not letting go of my wrists. “You love me.”

Fighting through his firm grip, I managed to lightly slap his face.

“Again,” I started as I finally pulled my hands from him. “He licks his own ass.”

I readjusted myself on the couch before waving my empty glass in his face.

“How about we do shots before and after I kick your ass?” I suggested after a new, overwhelming veil of awkwardness draped over us.

What the hell was that?

Ryan snickered as he stood up and stretched before going to retrieve the bottle of whiskey from the kitchen. I watched him intently. I watched how his muscles moved under his skin as he gravitated around my kitchen as if it were his own. I watched as he turned to come back to the living room too, his eyes widening slightly when they caught mine; a slight red color covering both our cheeks.

Wtf was in that weed he brought?

Silence once again filled the apartment so much so that I thought my walls might burst. Ryan sat next to me and placed the bottle on the coffee table. Not wanting to meet his gaze awkwardly again, I opted to keep my eyes focused on the whiskey.

“Hey Y/N,” Ryan’s breath was warm against my ear. “Maybe if you stare at it hard enough it’ll open and pour itself.”

Fuck he always knew how to lighten the mood. Without a word I slowly turned my head in his direction. My eyes were heavier than ever, the weed and booze hitting like a brick wall. Though they were low, they instinctively searched his face; a warm ness radiated from him. His goofy half smile...his eyes heavy and glossed over. He glanced at my lips then put his eyes back up to mine; our faces closer than I remembered.

“Fuck,” I blinked slowly. “You. Magee.”

His eyes widened briefly before his laugh erupted through the room; jolting me back to reality.

With all but 10 words being spoken between the two of us, we did our shots and finally started playing. It felt as if nothing leading up to this moment had even happened. All of the awkwardness and tension vanished as our game night continued on normally...Ryan cursing me to hell for killing him, swearing it was his controllers fault and me once again dominating him. It wasn’t until we stumbled back into my bedroom to smoke again that things got “weird” again.

“Y/N...” He trailed off, his voice breaking.

My brows furrowed and I turned away from my nightstand to face Ryan. He suddenly looked disheveled and dare I say...nervous?

“What?” I questioned. “Ryan what’s wrong?”

He was balancing his weight between both feet, rocking himself side to side subconsciously. Narrowing my eyes I slowly stepped towards him.

“Ry what’s going on?” I asked, waving my hand in his face to bring him back to earth.

He said nothing and it was starting to worry me.

“Yoo-hoo..center command to Ry-...”

I was cut short when Ryan grabbed my wrist again, pulling me into him..his mouth meeting mine.

Holy fucking shit

His free hand went to the back of my head so that I couldn’t pull away; his fingers tangling themselves in my hair. The warmth he was radiating earlier was now filling my insides. I was melting into him. We stayed that way for what felt like an eternity but not long enough at the same time. Overcome by emotions I pulled away from him.

“Ryan I...I..” My words were caught in my throat, and unexpected tears stung the corners of my eyes. “Fuck. I love you, I fucking love you.”

When he didn’t reply my insides now filled with dread; instant regret.

I’m never smoking again.

After a minute, Ryan’s lips pulled upward revealing the smile that could save lives. His fingers that remained locked in my hair began massaging my scalp comfortingly. His laugh was soft and almost inaudible.

“I knew drinking all 3 would convince you to fall in love with me.” He whispered, referencing his text from earlier.

It took me a second but my body finally relaxed into his again.

“Yeah sure Magee.” I cooed against his lips before leaving a light peck on them. “But I’m still not letting you win next round.”

He chuckled again and playfully slapped my ass.

“I don’t know Y/N.” He brushed my hair from my face and booped my nose. “I’d say I just won.”

Why did you choose your url?

OK, so I’m pretty sure ‘fizzydrink698’ has been my only url in my entire online experience. When I was like, 9 or 10, I was signing up to some kids website thing, and a classmate called Lauren put ‘lollipop’ in her url because the first part of the word sounded like the first part of her name. I shamelessly copied her, and the only sweet-related thing I could think of that had ‘Fi’ in it was fizzy drink – which I hated as a kid, but that’s by the by. I added ‘698’ because I needed numbers, and because I just liked the sound of the numbers together? They don’t correspond to any real-life information about me – which makes it the perfect online security choice, I guess.

Any side blogs?

Nope, my main blog is just a chaotic mess of my interests. A nice little digital scrapbook of what I’m into.

How long have you been on Tumblr?

I had to check my archive, and apparently I’ve been here since September 2012. I’m fairly sure I might have started a little earlier because I remember going through a cringe-induced deleting spree of my super old posts, but it was definitely 2012. So, 9 years?

Do you have a queue tag?

Nope, I don’t think I’ve ever actually scheduled a post in my life. I just post when I want.

Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

I was super into those dress-up games as a kid, and I used one to make myself and my friends as anime characters? Like a proto-picrew I guess. Anyway, I’m pretty sure it’s also been my icon for the past 9 years. I’ve been debating changing it, just because ‘anime icons’ have a certain connotation online. Eh, we’ll see.

Why did you choose your header?

It’s a hedge maze from a scene in my favourite movie, ‘Labyrinth’. I could honestly tell you the exact dialogue of the scene, the scenes directly before and after, at what point it takes place in the plot. I know that movie too well.

What's your post with the most notes?

Haha, so I was wondering when we’d get into this. Some of you may know that kpop fanfiction isn’t the first thing I’ve written for. Like I said, this blog has no theme, I follow my interest and I write what I like. Anyway, in 2017, I watched Descendants 2 with my little sister, it was like a tradition because we saw the first one together when it aired. And the concept of the series was super interesting, and one of the new characters was pretty hot, so I decided to write some fic. And it got way more popular than I was expecting – I still get asks and notes on it 4 years later. The post with the most notes is ‘reunions’. Enjoy my teenage self and her clumsy first attempts at Y/N.

As for kpop posts, I think the Instinct masterlist? I’m pretty happy with that, it has the first moodboard I ever created so that’s fun.

How many mutuals do you have?

Not that many? A handful? But, like, a big handful?

How many followers do you have?

OK, this number doesn’t sit right with me because a lot of it came from that wave of Descendants fans from 4 years ago, and I’m pretty certain most of the accounts have died out now, but my follower count technically stands at 994. But I’m fairly certain that the number of followers I’ve gotten since I first started posting kpop fic is closer to about 200?

How many people do you follow?

43, and a lot of those are fic writers I like and people I know IRL. I like to keep my dashboard light, makes the Tumblr experience feel more personal, I guess.

Have you ever made a shitpost?

Have I ever not made a shitpost?

How often do you use Tumblr each day?

Too much. At least every single day. I have developed a knee-jerk response of checking Tumblr when I’m bored, and I would estimate that I spend about 1-4 hours a day on it on average. But when I’m in the mood to read fic? Or chatting to people? Longer. Much longer.

Did you have a fight/argument with another blog once?

Honestly, I’m pretty liberal with my ‘Block’ button. If I see particular bad-faith criticism or just people who really strongly dislike my interests, I pre-emptively block because…why not? Life is short.

How do you feel about 'you need to compare this' posts?

I tried to Google what these are and literally found nothing. So, uh, pass?

Do you like tag games?

YES. YES I DO. People thinking of me enough to tag me is a love language all of its own and it makes my day.

I follow a few kpop fic writers who also follow me back, but I’m usually too nervous to actually interact with them. (to the point where I’m not gonna tag them here because embarrassed)

Do you have a crush on a mutual?

I don’t think it’s a ‘crush’ crush because the dangers of parasocial relationships am I right? but I spent an ungodly amount of time interacting with a certain mutual pretty much every day over a period of like three months? The serotonin hit when they responded? Unmatched. Our time zones also did not match at all, so I’d be staying up until like 3am. The first time they complimented my writing, I literally messaged an IRL friend in all-caps about it, and she just laughed and said ‘sempai noticed you, huh?’ So, like…there’s that? I’m pretty sure that mutual knows who they are. Hi. I’m gonna go hide forever now.

Do you write fluff/angst/crack/general/smut, combo, etc? Why? Fluff mostly. I just automatically gravitate to writing comfort reads, because that's the genre I simultaneously relate to and crave the most.

Why did you decide to write for Tumblr? Quarantine, and the fact that I was craving more attention than usual.

What inspires you to write? In general, writing feels like a lovely creative writing class that I won't ever have an option of sitting in again, and lets me constantly rediscover how much fun I used to have doing it in middle school and part of high school. Apart from that, I love flattery.

What do you hope your readers take away from your work? Some comfort, some happiness. I've read fics that have completely changed my mood when I was feeling shitty, so some of that at some point maybe.

What do you do when you hit a rough spot creatively? Take a break and come back to it. Or work on a different wip. Or start a different story,,,

What is your favorite work and why? Your most successful? I love all my Jaebeom stories because they're really soft, but Electric Hearts holds a very special place in my heart because of how personal the band and performance experiences in it are. All my Yoongi stories do really well, and We've Met is probably my most successful one.

Who is your favorite person to write about? Is it cheating to say y/n? There's just so much potential. If I had to pick another, Yoongi.

Do you think there’s a difference between writing fanfiction vs. completely original prose? In the sense that original stories have more world building and character developing, yes. But from a creativity, effort or skill point of view, not necessarily.

What do you think makes a good story? Chronology.

What is your writing process like? Fuck around and see what happens.

Would you ever repurpose a fic into a completely original story? If I ever write a (much, much) longer story, then maybe. But none of my existing ones.

How much would you say audience feedback/engagement means to you? I oscillate wildly between writing for feedback and writing for myself. Validation and engagement is a dire need sometimes, when I'm stuck and need incentive to continue, but other times, it isn't very high on the priority list.

Do you think fanfic writers get unfairly judged? By people who aren't exposed to (the non-toxic kind of) fandom culture, yes.

Do you think art can be a medium for change? On a larger scale, definitely.

Do you ever feel there are times when you’re writing for others, rather than yourself? When I'm actually writing a fic, no, I prefer to have fun with it. But after posting it, bitch, do I ever.

Do your offline friends/loved ones know you write for Tumblr? Three of my closest friends.

What is one thing you wish you could tell your followers? Y'all ever get tired of the mini shitposts in the tags?

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who might be too scared to put themselves out there? Just go for it, really. And talk to established writing blogs about advice and feedback and recognition. It's a new space to navigate and it's easier and more rewarding to have some help in the long run.

Who’s the messiest one: Neither of them strike me as very messy. Though given that Wylan tends to be clean by nature simply by not having much stuff to clean, he may be the one saddled with this badge. After all he’s the one who’d make a mess to be ironic or to get a laugh. Turn a fancy living room into a big pillow fort. Start a water gun fight... yeah, this shouldn’t really be a surprise. What’s important, though, is that he helps Sonia clean things up once it’s all said and done. That in itself becomes something enjoyable I’m sure.

Who feels the most uncomfortable about PDA: This one definitely goes to Sonia. You’re asking a question involving shame when Wylan is concerned? Not a chance. He’d toe the line of illegal levels if the opportunity presented itself and he was in the right mood after all. Even then, if he’s not doing them, he’s suggesting things he’d like to be doing with Sonia when they were in situations where that would be ill advised. Then proceed to do something a bit more proper, but still lead on with her thinking he was about to do a bad? Yeah.

Who's the funniest drunk: While Wylan doesn’t have a steel liver he does hold his alcohol very well. As well as Sonia? That’s yet to be seen, since with her background she’s no stranger to drinking either. This one may be a tie? Because Wylan will intentionally act out if he’s comfortable with the person he’s drinking with. And I believe Sonia may be likely to be silly herself when she doesn’t have to hold her tongue or senses. Let them be idiots together? Sounds like WySonia brand to me.

Who texts the most: I’m giving this to Wylan. He’s a shitposter online (big surprise) and that can translate into his texting habits. Whether he’s pestering people for attention or sending random images he found (or took himself!) the guy is active when it comes to social media and that increases when he’s more chummy with a person. He’s also doing less than tasteful things over text . . . in addition to being cute, these moments should be capitalized on and called out.

Who has the most embarrassing taste in music: This would probably go to Sonia, I have a feeling with her upbringing and interests she’d be listening to music that would be more blush inducing or ridiculous. Wylan’s music tastes are... kinda standard rock-y after all? Mixed in with stuff that would be more aptly described as weird with things like this in his playlists. Hailing from Europe I agree that she probably has him beaten out.

Who reads the most: Sonia. Easily. Wylan does read every now and then and goes through news articles and the like but next to Sonia who’s got novels and all her other hobbies based around researching I don’t think Wylan comes close in this regard. With that in mind we have the possibility for cute moments of Wylan spending time around her while she is reading. Lap pillow? Bet.

Who’s better with kids: Wylan is great around kids that aren’t his own. He has that crazy uncle energy that kiddos and toddlers just can’t get enough of. Show off a few magic tricks of his and they’re in his pocket without a chance for escape. He’s also just good at being playfully rough or chasing.. playground games... guy didn’t have a great childhood himself so vicarious living is taken advantage of. With that said I feel like we’d have to talk more about if they were to have kids of their own. Wylan can be a harder touch and more strict with them. He’s still fun, but noticeably less so. :V Maybe Sonia has a side to her I’m unaware of.

Who’s the one that fixes things around the house: I’ll be honest I’ve been checking your responses to Ryuji to double check the vibes and I’m also seeing the fantastic dynamic of Wylan being the one to step in and fix things after Sonia has.... made her attempts. I want to say that Sonia tries more to fix things that could use work, but it’s Wylan who actually gets the work done if he isn’t just calling a guy in to do it instead.

Who’s got the weirdest hobby: This one’s tough. On the one hand you have Sonia who has all of her occult interests and enthusiasm. On the other you have Wylan stalking people as a recreational hobby. Both of those things are weird, even if Wylan’s is more concerning... based on that, and given that most of Wylan’s other hobbies are comparatively normal I think this one can go to Sonia. Her naivete towards the world and unique approach to most things one ups the creepy people watcher. Who cooks and who cleans up: It’s not a huge surprise that neither of them can nor should be cooking, but if one of them had to be doing it... lets leave that to Wylan. He at least won’t be burning the water so he can boil it for pasta or toss something into the oven. But like I mentioned in the first bullet point I like to think that both of them would be cleaning up together if only to make things more fun. Yeah?

since i’m in a gc shitposting mood, I decided to wrap my head around why being asked your pronouns due to androgynous presentation is only a problem among gc crowd and in libfem/TRA circles it’s painted as non-problematic at all (while any concerns are arguably shunned, see Contrapoints getting canceled for “enbyphobia” for tangentially related reason).

I THINK the reason they’d give is one shouldn’t be “offended” for “getting perceived as trans”, because I remember it’s been agreed at some point that straight people are homophobic for not wanting to look gay, at least I recall some discourse along those lines

so I was thinking why these two points are different. and my conclusions so far are

1) gender non-conformity has been a sort of tradition for gay/lesbian community for decades, as well as drag and so forth; so while a gnc person may not be trans, chances are they do belong in the LGBT community, plus it might be that they are actually signaling their gay status, so it’s not accidental or tourist-y, it’s authentic and deliberate and also something which they would call q***r, just different. not to mention gay people break gender roles and presentation norms enthusiastically while a hypothetical straight person would be averted to “looking gay” in any case.

2) both the straight person from the example and the pronoun askers are following stereotypes, except

3) (this got long and needlessly in-depth so you may stop right there if it’s tldr) in the pronoun case, it’s kinda inevitable bc if we are to look at people from gender id perspective, expression and presentation are almost as informative as the essence, at least it’s given way more importance than it would be otherwise, almost to the point of approaching the ultra-conservative view horseshoe-style. so no matter how much you validate “gnc trans people” ie feminine trans men and such, you’re still bound to examine the appearances meticulously just in case bc affirming everybody’s gender is an obligation (at which point I assume you’d rather make it a norm to just ask it like you ask for a person’s name but whatever, ig they’d come to this eventually bc that’s the only logical way out). which leads to the utmost importance of “affirmation” and “validation” for whatever reason (remember when gay rights discourse did not revolve around that? I ‘member).

like I know I am bi by many people’s standards. I am absolutely less of a lesbian/not one compared to women who only ever crush on women. I am okay with that! no matter how much I may vent and complain on this blog, I understand that it would be both futile and ridiculous to set my “validity” in stone, by way of correcting wikis and dictionaries, effectively going so far as to redefine lesbian completely just to include myself (I like technical definitions myself and mostly choose more succinct terms depending on the situation/functionality). honestly, my only goal here is to support women in similar situation/with similar sexuality. but that’s beside the point.

anyway, with the way I see affirmation in modern-day LGBT groups, it looks like “setting foot into a room and being validated” became the ultimate ideal for many people. and to make things slightly worse, there’s now a hierarchy ladder of oppression or validation needs which urges people to err on the trans side each time all the time, just because the transness is now sitting on top of that ladder. tbh I can get how homosexual people or gold stars may get aggravated and in turn begin to push for their own validation, because they might as well be completely invisible. it’s like in the process of gate-opening we might inadvertently smack lots of people with those flying gates in the face, or “include” some into a space they weren’t trying to get in (like stuffing gnc under the trans umbrella), while widening their own groups into free-to-join clubs.

there is this noble call to welcome late comers and questioning people (hello), but I think it wouldn’t spin out of control unless we didn’t genuinely put so much weight to validation and demonize rejection so much AND be so fucking idealistic/platonic about it. like it’s important to discuss diversity of personal experiences, but what kills me everytime is how the personal experience became forged together to ideal concepts. I do X and I am Z therefore Zs can do X! -> people who are Zs can do X! -> many, or all Zs do X. instead of, like, I do X but I’m an outlier, I do X but it must be a consequence of this and that, or I do X but it isn’t really Z-ish, or heck, maybe I’m not Z and that’s okay.

or, on the other side, no Zs do X, ever, at all, because I said so, because we absolutely must defend the label from the outsiders!

or, I see you doing X... have you thought that you’re Z?

sooooo much induction in these discussions, it’s unbearable. all diversity evaporates, every time people are jumping back to definitions, bc haven’t you heard, you must fit the definition to be VALID, and being valid is the only way to happiness! yep.

it’s all so word- and surface-centered. I think if we just agreed that people aren’t texts in a post-modern analysis and we shouldn’t treat them as just “surfaces” or rows of “signs”, we wouldn’t worry about appearances so much in the first place.

MISMATCHED SOCKS WERE A GODDAMN FASHION STATEMENT AT SCHOOL HELL YEAH

32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends.

Well there were two funny things.

the first one was this massive sleepover party, and the minute the lights went off with all these adolescents sardined on the floor (teens but like, everyone was just chilling nothing nsfw happening), the marshmallow war began

it’s 3am and people are being PELTED with the goddamn things in the dark it was chaos.

the other time, i’d gone to a party thing, put up a tent to stay over like the others and this other girl at the party i’d just befriended (along with her highly anxious friend i managed to calm down) was not sure how to get home and i’m like… stay in my tent i have space it’s chill

we’re sleeping in jeans bc that seemed like a good idea at the time (it was NOT)

everyone’s STARVING. like, no real FOOD was at this party (New Years party?) we had chips and softdrink and that was it… and i dunno if you know this, but no amount of like, chicken-flavoured chips will fill up the aching hollow in your stomach for Real Food

so we’re talking bc we’re awake, relative strangers who are starving together in a tent they’re intending to share the night in, and we get on to SUPERNATURAL

i loved the show still it wasn’t the disaster it became, yet… and she admits that the S1 episode with the Wendigo freaked her out… and i’m like, hah, yeah, glad we’re not in a tent with woods around, huh? bc i am an asshole… that was pretty much where we were

and around the same time, the free-roaming chickens on the property are slowly moving past and making satanic noises, freaking her out more so i changed the topic to calm things down… but then, later on (waaaaaaaaay too early in the morning bc some of us had to pee early and it was Effort™ ) i get back to the tent to find a Chicken. In. The Tent.

looking at me like *I* was being the asshole here for intruding on her rest.

There’s two, one called (creatively) Teddy, who wore a yellow onesie the Parental Unit made for him. My fondest memory of him was this time in kindy where we took our teddies in bc it was ‘Teddy Bear Picnic Day’, and during naptime, the teachers took the teddies and hid them around the playground…

We had to find them when we woke up.

Teddy had one foot in the top of the fence and looked like he was trying to leave/escape… i told the Parental Unit this story a thousand times over the years, the poor bugger.

The other one was made for me, after Parental Unit had a dream i’d be a girl. Her name is Heidi (you know, after the song? ‘Heidi, Heidi, Heidi ho, the elephant walks oh so slow’), she’s a pink elephant in a tutu and lovely and she and ted are hella safe for now.

Okay, so we have four cats and a doggo.

The two oldest cats are sisters, aged 11; very loving but also tiny murder machines so they’re inside mostly.

Two youngest half-siblings, aged 7; one is the perpetual kitten who loves affection, the other is a slinky boi who comes to you if he wants love, and not before (adores my sibling tho, their bond is strong).

Doggo is the baby, she’s 3 i think? Always energetic.

Y and Z

Do you guys remember when analysts, insiders, and marketers were trying to “crack” the Millennials (Gen Y)? It wasn’t even that long ago when articles on figuring out how to connect with my generation were vogue. My dad even attended a conference on how to integrate Millennials into the workforce, circa 2010. It still happens from time to time, but now, things are shifting towards figuring out my successor, Gen Z. Makes sense, I guess, considering they’re almost as large as the Millennials and the Boomers, and despite the oldest members being 21 (born in 1996), people haven’t really been looking at the differences between those my age and those born a decade later, largely because they’ve often been lumped in with Millennials.

I’m towards the tail end of the Millennials (born in ‘93), and so I have some friends that are at the beginning of Gen Z, but overall, my friends tend to be Millennials, both younger and older. In some regards, I find more similarities with early Gen Z members than older Millennials, but altogether, I’d say my affinities are definitely more with the Millennials than Gen Z. That’s not a slight against Gen Z, rather just a noted difference, which will probably become blurred as we all get older anyways. Going back to school well past when most people do also puts into perspective a bit of the difference; many of my classmates in first year courses were fresh outta high school (born in ‘98) and it does make me wonder where things are headed as Gen Z grows and matures, and where the generation follows it takes us as a society.

With the Millennials, Boomers and Gen Xers had to learn how to professionally work with a generation that grew up with the Internet in its infancy, with a generation that was given so much from its parents, including growing up being told we’re each our own “special snowflake” and that we should reach for the stars, and so long as we got a degree -- any degree -- we’d be happy. We were considered idealistic, liberal, and tech-savvy.

Well, now, everyone’s used to it, and perhaps because Gen Z is also very tech-savvy and educated and grew up being given participation ribbons, nobody sought out the difference until more recently. But there are differences. Gen Z is more conservative apparently (I don’t see it in terms of social issues), more into “branding” oneself and generally more consumerist. Gen Z is also way more immersed in digital technology than I ever was growing up. I remember into junior high knowing people who still didn’t have Internet or a cell phone; I can’t see that really happening now except in extreme scenarios. Furthermore, they grew up with high speed internet, not that dial up shit I had.

I’m still one to prefer browsing on a stationary, desktop computer, rather than on my phone. The phone is often more handy when I’m out, but if I have a choice, I’ll always go for the computer. Which is partly why I loathe mobile-specific social media for not being more browser-friendly. Being a photographer is no doubt an influence here, as I like being able to view visual media on a larger screen. But I also grew up with desktops, and was used to having to physically go home to chat with people on MSN, and when I was out, I was basically disconnected. I had a cell phone, sure, but I wasn’t texting on it (which was expensive) or browsing the ‘Net on it (which was even more expensive). None of that happened until I got a Blackberry in 12th grade. Millennials grew up around the PC; Generation Z grew up around iPads and iPhones. Apparently, on average, Generation Z does not value time offline, while I personally value being disconnected on occasion (not permanently -- I’m not that much of a luddite). I know when I’ve spent too much time in front of screens.

Gen Z is also more visual. Well, I’m a photographer, so I’m naturally a very visual person, so this works for me on some level. And as a Millennial, I’m not unaware of short attention spans among my cohort. As digital technology continues to make inroads, it only makes sense that attention spans continue to wane. But even still, I’m here, writing long blog posts and I enjoy photoblogs which are more long-form as well. They aren’t easily digestable, though, which is why there are less viewers. It makes sense that social media, then, has moved towards less politicized, more mobile and visually-orientated platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, while Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr are waning, especially among Gen Z. I’m not too happy about that, to be honest. I find value in political discourse and believe that if we don’t fight for rights we may as well not have them. You’re not getting discourse if you’re busy posting aesthetic selfies on Snapchat. It seems like youth (including Millennials) have kinda accepted things as they are, and, perhaps due to overstimulation, are a bit fatigued at all the information out there, and so there is a certain sense of complacency. The general mood of memes seems to be “yeah, the world is shit, I’ve accepted it doesn’t make sense and therefore I’m gonna shitpost rather than do anything about it.” Maybe I’m reading into it too much but I’ve seen others corroborate this mindset. It’s quite a different mentality from 7 years ago, when Twitter was at peak, which is all about discourse, often political. I don’t think the interface of many websites now helps, which bombard you with ads and offers before you can see anything.

It’s a bit early to say, as the youngest Gen Zers are between 0 and 7, depending on who you ask, but I hope one thing that Gen Z and its parents (mostly Gen X) learn from the Millennials is regarding education. It seems like the eldest members of Z were brought up with the same ideas as us, though. I hope that they realize that it is important still to follow what you’re passionate about and you do need to find something of a career that you will enjoy, but I hope that there is more of a practicality about it. My generation was told we’d be set as long as we had a degree -- any degree -- and I can tell you that that simply isn’t the case. It isn’t that there are “worthless” degrees, but that there are degrees which require you to market yourself harder than if you got an Engineering degree and then becoming an Engineer. I already know a few older Millennials who went down that path, and are or have gone back to school later for something more practical yet still enjoyable. Academia works for certain fields, certainly, and the program I’m in is practical, but we’ve flooded universities too much because we’ve imbibed the idea that we need a degree to succeed, which is utter poppycock. A lot of people in university would be better suited to a technical school or a diploma of some sort, which often yield great success without having to pay back a mountain of student loans. I don’t know if Gen Z will learn this, as I know parents of Gen Z kids who’ve really imbibed the post-secondary ideal as much, if not more, than the Millennial’s parents.

I guess if you’re reading between the lines, I’m a bit sardonic about the future. It’s nothing to do with Millennials or Gen Z specifically, as we’re both products of the time we grew up in. A friend of mine joked that I was “born too late” and, considering how slow I sometimes I am with accepting technological trends and how much I like late 20th century pop culture, maybe he’s got a point. But it’s always easy to romanticize the past. The ‘50s were great, if you don’t factor in how close we were to nuclear annihilation or how discriminatory the hegemony was. Furthermore, I’ve definitely become far more aware of things due to being able to access the Internet than if I grew up in an earlier time. Despite the overstimulation, I think we can take for granted how much more aware we are able to be now; friction of distance has been reduced to rubble. Also, my earlier comments about Gen Z favouring visual, favouring mobile, really apply to us all. Millennials have orientated towards these formats, as well as older generations. It definitely seems like my grandparents are more into their smartphone than they ever were Windows 98. It’s just Gen Z is the generation that has no basis of comparison to a pre-mobile era, just like Millennials can’t compare to a pre-Internet age (except maybe some of our eldest members), and both have an influence on their respective generation.

Still, I’m not only curious how I’ll survive progress, but how society will as a whole. America is in late empire, and there is no new Western power to take the helm like after Britain. It’ll be interesting how that plays out for still-maturing Western countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, but it seems like we’re shifting to a pre-Columbian paradigm dominated by the East. As with any change, there’s uncertainty, although America will likely remain a major player in geopolitics for the long term, even if less hegemonic in scope. I’m even more curious about what will become of us once those degrees we hammered thousands upon thousands of dollars on are rendered obsolete by AI. Some say the singularity is nigh, some say it already happened and we were too busy tweeting to notice. But I don’t think it has happened in the Kurzweilian sense, and once that happens, it’ll be interesting to see where things go. If we can “survive” it, we’ll probably be better off. But then there’s still climate change. Maybe once we become a (hypothetical) Kardashev Type 1 civilization, we’ll have progressed towards not killing ourselves over differences and will have finally survived progress.

But for now, I still have to live in a world ruled by filters and brands, all-the-while we became increasingly connected yet disconnected. Maybe I’ll fuck off to Dawson City before having to bear the full front of our digital future. Sounds nicer for someone unwilling to embrace digital advances like so many of my peers. Then again, how different, really, is seeing a bunch of people, disparately glued to their phones, from seeing a different bunch of people glued to their books. Despite being social animals, we’ve long desired our own “space” and privacy, at least in the Western world.
