i want the show gang to be better at telling each other things than the book gang, but with one exception.

so, in the books, elayne spends several months at the white tower with egwene and gawyn, so she is probably aware that there's a crush brewing (at least on gawyn's side if not also egwene's, depending on whether we want to ignore the Early Series Weirdness of her crush on galad which is later semi-retconned lmao) because i just know that elayne would be very observant about things like that (unlike egwene completely missing everything to do with avirand while traveling with them for months bless her heart).

but in the show, depending on how things are reshuffled, elayne might not be around whenever and wherever egwene and gawyn first meet. she might not be around for ANY of the times they're interacting.

and i just think it would be funny if egwene and gawyn both refuse to or forget to confide in elayne about their love lives and elayne rolls up to the last battle and sees them together and it's like "oh hey! egwene, i didn't know you knew my brother" "yeah he's my husband actually" "what the FUCK"

also just want to say!! if I snap at any of you, it is almost certainly NOT your fault, I am currently embroiled in the stupidest employment situation of my life with one of my jobs (neither working nor fired but a secret third thing [re-assigned to on call in a management move that is at best morally bankrupt]) and it turns out that I am one of those dogs who starts destroying couches and chewing through doors if I am not given Daily Tasks To Complete. That's me rn. Tearing up my enclosure. Under-stimulated and creating problems just to have something to do. No assigned tasks, no external schedule, no emotional regulation, no coherent thoughts. i don’t know if you take them, but headcanons for mesmers in kotlc? because I feel like they’re not the most developed

I'm not very experienced with headcanons, but I can certainly try! This may just end up an assortment of details I would've included myself if it were my story. Some are already in line with canon, but not explicitly stated, so I'm saying them here

When mesmerising someone, one's mind is vulnerable and more susceptible to all other kinds of influence (beguilers, telepathic invasion, other mesmers, etc)

The more involved and intense the actions another is being mesmerized into doing, the more vulnerable the mind

(e.g., making someone slap themself once vs prolonged holding your hand in fire. also affected by number of people under control)

There is a finite amount of power one has, which can either be concentrated in one person's complex task, or spread out across multiple people as simpler tasks

This varies from person to person, and with practice you can increase your capability

There's a passive side effect to the ability that makes mesmers inherently more persuasive

This creates notable distrust in some, who constantly question their own conclusions and subtle actions in the presence of a mesmer (this is just canon but more relevant here)

More powerful mesmers can, with practice, utilize others' abilities effectively via mesmerising them

For example, mesmerizing a hydrokinetic and being able to use their hydrokinesis vicariously (this could be argued as existing in canon, but I'm making a distinction for no particular reason)

The more one practices with another's ability, the more skilled they become and the more they can use it (the benefits in one area also seep into all areas, making them more adaptable and skilled overall). This leads some to try and practice via trusted people repeatedly

However, the more time one spends mesmerizing one person, the more accustomed their mind becomes to it, and the harder it is to separate and break away

The adaptability and skill one gains in all regards of their personhood can come at the cost of the mental security of others, which can deter many from trying

I few of these are more canon than others, but I am very canon oriented so it's to be expected. I hope this is sufficient for your request, at least for now! I'm sure there's much more that could be explored or added, but these are the ideas I thought of first :)

gosh. thinking abt a little book i saw at a secondhand store the other day....... it was a girl's book with notes from her friends telling her how much they loved her and how sweet and kind she was. all the notes were dated some time in 1950. in the back cover was a note saying betty had died age 15 in early 1951. and it just,,,, those were real girls and real teachers who loved this girl so much. heartbreaking to find it in a store, but also so tender to get a peek into some other person's life...

i agree the dave thing is so funny, especially when laurie gets distracted from Andrew’s story about his awful depressing childhood to be jealous about dave’s entire existence, and then has to spend a few mins convincing andrew he’s still interested in his story and it’s not boring 😭 that bit kills me, i don’t know why some people say Mary isn’t a funny writer! but my personal interpretation, mostly based on the end conversation with dave, is that he must give off ~vibes~, just based on when dave says “i think you’ve misunderstood things between andrew and I” and then couple that with him being in love with bertie. and we do know that laurie can pick up on vibes, because he’s actually pretty good at picking up on andrew.

I think Laurie is generally hilarious, at times intentionally, at others not! There are lots of scenes I remember laughing at as I want along 😭

I do think you're right about vibes and about them being important, and of course Laurie is good at picking them up, kind of because he has to be. Honestly, I think most characters in this book have to be vibe-masters 😭 that's what I feel like many of the conversations with meeting new characters is like: simply vibe-checks 😭 That being said, I did really like the explanation regarding some weird-misplaced idea of influence that Laurie puts on Andrew, because in the scene that makes me laugh and another before it, Andrew actually does establish that Dave influences him, the only problem is that Laurie assumes there must be something romantic behind it. Those are the vibes he was getting, and you're right, he could've just picked up on Dave and connected dots, but I think there's more to it than that. The next few scenes after this one (the hilarious Reg-seduction scene and also tea with Adrian) kind of offer some more interesting insight; in both scenes, the idea of influence is referred to and explored, with Andrew being the center of it in the former. It seems even Reg has an idea that Andrew ought to be 'positively influenced'

I don't know 😭 I have this theory developing in my head, but I don't know if it's wrong because I haven't finished the rest of the book. And this book specifically is so cool because every time you think you understand a part of it, something else happens and you have to go back and recontextualize everything 😭 regardless, thank you for sharing your interpretation with me! It really makes me think about everything I've already read, and try to see what I could've missed and need to think more about.
