Thoughts on J-Novel Translation of Slayers: The Long Way Home, Ch 4

And now, after 30 years, all of the light novels have been officially translated into English. This is incredible and a day I never thought I’d see. I am so grateful for J-Novel for taking on this project and all of the people who have supported them. Let’s hope they continue to translate Slayers works.

-And Lina casts a dragon slave. She mentions that a kingdom with a single sorcerer who can use the spell is not to be trifled with, which brings a lot of questions about how many people in the Inner World can cast it, or whether the more powerful kingdoms are in some sort of stalemate like modern countries with nuclear armaments are is hard to say.

-Gourry is as always attuned to her emotions.

-Church of Ceifeed seems to be popular in the Outer Lands, building on the idea that humans tend to worship the Dragon Lords.

-Opens up the possibility of Lina learning spells to summon the power of the Dragon Lords.

-Well, if Lina and Gourry do have a baby, I think the scene with naming Ran’s staff goes to show they would be of similar minds about naming it, lol.

-Damn, those dragons are frightening opponents. Those are some interesting visuals.

-And I just checked, no update on novel 18, and it is undecided when the short story for Dragon Magazine will be released.

 I finished watching the anime My Stepmom's Daughter Is My Ex.It leaves me the impression of worth sof my time. While things had started with the two being hostile against one another, by First episode’s end it seems likely their former relationship maybe shouldn’t be former. If this is how things start, where do things go from here? It’s the maturity of their decision (to hide from their parents the animosity)that goes hand-hand with comedic situations.

how does the manga compare to the original novels for Otherside Picnic? I'm debating looking up where to read the novels since I'm caught up with the manga

The way most people talk about Otherside Picnic adaptations is like this: the anime is mediocre, the manga is good, and the books are amazing. The manga is very good but it struggles to capture Sorawo’s internal monologue, which is the most fascinating part of it all. I could talk forever about how much Sorawo’s thoughts and limited perspective on everything are important to Otherside Picnic, but other people have said it better than me a hundred times. I have read all 8 books twice and I only learned about Otherside Picnic in summer of 2022. And I know I will be rereading them many times in the future. They’re so good I can’t begin to get across just how good they are. Again, the manga is very good, but it’s honestly more enjoyable to me after reading the books because I know what Sorawo is thinking the whole time

Thoughts on J-Novel Translation of The Slayers: The Long Way Home, Ch 2

-There is so much about Lina and Gourry’s relationship to shift through and explore and squee over here!

-Regarding the question of whether or not Gourry can read, I feel the evidence in this chapter points to no. He’s able to recognize written writing to the point of assuming that Bronco’s handwriting is poor where Lina realizes that it’s a slightly different alphabet. Gourry assumes that Lina can’t read it and is surprised when she says that she can figure it out. It’s possible that Gourry wasn’t able to figure it out but I think it strongly implies that Gourry can’t read at all. He doesn’t seem to try and Lina doesn’t point out individual phonemes to clarify it or anything (ie: see this? It’s like an r rotated by 90 degrees and makes a similar sounds), rather she points to the labels on the map and how she’s able to point out things from that.

-Lina and Gourry’s finances seem to be one and the same by now, and Lina is the one managing them. Gourry is pretty much straightforward asking her whether they have the funds to get home.

-And everything about the scene with Lina and Gourry talking about being homesick is wonderful. Lina handles the pragmatics of traveling, they both share the weight of the fighting (and people tend to underestimate Gourry there because Lina’s spells are so flashy, but Lina points out that he puts in more work there), meanwhile Gourry really takes charge of taking care of Lina’s emotional needs. Gourry notices that she’s not feeling happy and she first tries to insist that she’s fine but realizes that she can’t hide it from him. Gourry suggests that she’s homesick and Lina initially says that she was more adrift before she met Gourry, implying that he provided a sense of grounding and stability for her, so basically what I hear is that he is her home, OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!

-Gourry is so damn good for Lina! And he could totally be a counselor. He is so good at helping her admit her feelings and understand the needs and reasons behind them, which does bring about the relief that Lina describes feeling after talking with him. No other character is so focused on taking care of Lina the way that he is and that is why this is the best ship ever.

-Gourry sure doesn’t let her get deep with him though. She says she knows he’s from Elemekia but when she starts to probe he deflects.

-Given the anime, novel Lina has a surprising modest streak about her abilities. She’s uncomfortable being referred to as Lady Lina by Ran.

-And Ran does have some suspicious elements. Her whole entrance was a big whole pay attention to me thing and like Eris she projects this clueless girl who ran away from home image but turns out to be a competent fighter.
