Tianyou Experimental Primary School and Kindergarten

BAU was selected through invited competition to design a combined 24-class kindergarten and 48-class Tianyou Experimental Primary School and Kindergarten on the rapidly urbanizing fringe of Suzhou New District.

classrooms and the in-between Cutting edge education models explore a more interactive, collaborative, inquisitive, student-centred, teaching-learning environment. Consequently the goal of the contemporary school building is to blur the line between formal teaching in classrooms and the informal learning of the in-between spaces. With smart spatial design, informal teaching can inhabit the informal learning spaces, and vice versa. This new approach to education requires the entire school to become a teaching-learning environment.

small site, lots of program Previous BAU school projects have lead to outcomes of buildings as figures on a ground of open space. With this project (a primary school and a kindergarten on a smaller site) the figure ground plan can be perceived as the reverse – open space as figures in a ground of building – more Circus Maximus or Piazza Navona than Levittown or Oak Park.

informal teaching and learning The site has been conceived as a building podium with the various open spaces required, extracted from that podium: the sports ground; the playground for the kindergarten children; the courtyards for the primary school children; entrances for both schools; and a ring of green between the schools and the footpath.

What remains is in effect a meandering beam that runs around all the open spaces. This meandering beam contains a new innovative network – traditional school corridors have been transformed into lumpy and generous spaces where informal teaching and learning are encouraged. Within the largest of these corridors a number of semi-enclosed learning spaces are provided for informal events such as exhibitions and larger group work.

formal teaching and learning Six regular beams chasing the sun, contain modified classrooms and straddle the meandering beam. Within these beams, each pair of traditional classrooms is provided with a glass-walled meeting room. This enables smaller student teams to communicate without distracting the rest of the class, and still be within easy reach of the teacher. The informal / formal parts of the building are clearly articulated spatially, formally and materially.

place, iconography and abstraction Working with Chinese classical garden scholar, Craig Easton, the project engages with local geometries and motifs via unexpected framing, scaling, slippage, layering, wrapping and more to further integrate art and play with the learning environment.

kindergarten is German for children’s garden Five themed gardens provide the kindergarten with places to: dream, act and perform in the imagination garden; to swing, climb, slide and jump in the muscle garden; to dig, plant, pat, and explore in the nature garden; to shovel, sweep, and organise in the work garden; and to smell the flowers, taste the herbs, feel the water, listen to the pipes, and touch the textures in the garden of the senses.

past, present and future This project demonstrates that ancient spatial models can work together with current educational theories, to provide contemporary teaching and learning environments for future generations.

Gülnezer Bextiyar, or simply Nazha, is a Chinese-Uyghur actress. She was born on May 2, 1992, in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China. Goodbye 2016

Milestone year! Turned 21. 

I try to do a pensive reflection of things each year.  This time shall not be an exception, although 2 days late… 

THANKSGIVING 

Many of the events this year has shaped my thoughts a little differently, made me feel/think/act differently as well. All in all, I did feel disappointed in 2016. For many of the events that have happened but through it all, I’m just surviving on the thought that if God made me alive today. Live through it. And so I did. 

Turning 21: Threw a hug-eass party, (almost) everyone I knew showed up. Loved it, had a great time with people. Then celebrated the big moments with friends who turned 21 too. 

Travels: Anyone who’s decently close to me knows my escapism mentality. Covered a couple of places, KL, Hong Kong, Sydney and day trips to JB(?) hella fun times heading to places alone, eating life’s delicious treats *when’s my next holiday again* 

Work: Am definitely most thankful for 3 angels that I got to know in the office. Rachel, Jackie and Allison. What’d I do without all their advise and help. Most importantly, thank God I made it through the year. Bets and Jasmine, are the girls who held the fort so long and I’m so lucky to have gotten to meet you both with such big hearts. Elysia and Dian, you girls were the kindest to me despite my shittiest briefs as well. The whole year of work is nothing without all your efforts. :) 

OT2 + Mates: Can’t be more thankful that our paths crossed. What’d I do without their constant support the past year, and of them hearing me rant about anything and everything under the sun. Every individual I met has touched my life this year! Syl for accepting me so readily into the LG, allowing me a chance to get to know people - Grace, Enxuan, Yu Zhu, Shu Hui, Cedric, Felicia, Jeremiah, Kelvin and extending to the bigger hope family in this new life stations - Yuli, Jiamin and others who I’m slowly getting to know as the days go by. 

KBJM: One of the best takeaways of poly life! Jermaine, Mabel, Tina you girls are such hardworking and inspiring individuals that I won’t ever exchange out for anyone else. The last year we’ve sung so much. ate quite a lot and I definitely miss seeing you guys way more as we were back in school but as we head on to different places in 2017, may our friendship always be so genuine and till the time I see you girls again :) 

Sheree/Char: You girls are wonderfully and fearfully made. You’ll see it someday. Our conversations though slightly depressing, but I appreciate all the honest thoughts and opinions that we offer to each other. May the coming year be of one that not only you guys achieve greater successes in school, but may we all 3 grow wiser by God’s anointing. 

+ all other friends: Forever blessed to have met great people around me, many others whose names I can’t personally dedicate each message to as that’d mean my list never stops. But the last few years of friendships with each person has a slot in my heart, and I won’t forget that and may the new year only brings us more opportunities to catch up, hang out and share lives with one another 

WHAT’S NEXT

I’m trying to learn to let go slowly, of how uncertainty freaks me out. 

May the new year be one that’s full of life and adventure, and for a time of figuring things out. But one or maybe 2 things I’m most determined are: 

To get my r/s with God back on track. Christ-centredness always. 

Be a little healthier (no more junking 24/7!!!)
