Review: Lonely Castle in the Mirror
Tumblr media
What do you do when school is no longer a safe place? For thirteen-year-old Kokoro Anzai, the answer is simple: you step through your bedroom mirror and accept the Wolf Queen’s invitation to find refuge in her lonely castle. Only, when Kokoro does this, she discovers that there are unexpected strings attached and also that she is not the only one to have followed the wolfish Alice through the looking glass. Six others await her in the castle’s grand entrance, each carrying his or her own burdens from the real world. There are two girls: shy Fuka, who doesn’t play piano anymore, and natural-born leader Aki, who has a knack for changing the subject when things get too close to home. Joining them, are four boys: the quiet chess genius Subaru, who shocks everyone by turning up one day with bleached hair; Ureshino, who falls in love with every girl he speaks to; Masamune, the gamer and inveterate liar; and Rion, the handsome soccer star. In the weeks and months to come, these seven young people will embark on a quest from the Wolf Queen to search out the Wishing Key that lies hidden somewhere within the lofty vaults of her domain. If found before the end of the school year, the key will unlock the power to grant one teen’s wish, at the cost of all seven losing their memories of their year spent together. Will they find the key? And if so, will someone use it?
And so the fantastical adventure begins, as the youths’ newfound friendships are put to the test on a journey that will see them find renewed hope and the courage to overcome their fears. Right?

Lonely Castle in the Mirror
2022 film
Director: Keiichi Hara
April 16, 2023
This January, I watched an anime movie called "Lonely Castle in the Mirror" made by Keichi Hara. I didn't have much expectations about it, since I wasn't familiar with his works. However, it turned out to be so good that I enjoyed it very much. Although it was a fantasy movie, it represented the "real world" well.
The main character is Kokoro, a teenage girl who is being bullied at school. One day, she finds a mirror that, upon touching it, drags her into another world. She finds herself inside a castle with six other teenagers. Then the master of the castle appears before them and announces that whoever finds a hidden key somewhere in the castle will be granted one wish.
The movie reflects real life problems, such as bullying, child abuse, and other issues that can ruin a child's life. The fact pains me, but because of the character of Ms. Kitajima, I can say that the movie is also touching. There are people like her who care about the youth, which gives me hope. She is not a mother. She is not a sister. She is not even a school teacher. Yet, she is much more than just a counselor for young people like Kokoro. Aoi Miyazaki is the actress who voices the character of Ms. Kitajima. I've always been a fan of her, and I think she did a great job in this movie, as always.

She discovers a portal in her mirror that transports her to an enchanted castle. A girl in a wolf mask explains that Kokora and six other students have been “invited” to play a game. They need to work together to uncover the connection that unites them, but anyone who breaks the rules will be eaten by a wolf.
