Donate Now to Bring Back the Bay Lights
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
UPDATE: $6m pledged. Four more $1m pledges and the project is a go! Crowdfunding of 11th million continues here. Widely considered one of the world’s great public art projects, The Bay Lights’ current system of LEDs is failing at a rate faster than can be repaired. They must be replaced with a new system that is custom engineered to perform in the harsh environmental conditions of San Francisco Bay. On March 5th, on the 10th anniversary of its initial Grand Lighting, the artwork will go dark.
In total, $11M is needed for their return. We are raising ten $1M gifts from major philanthropists. This crowdfunding campaign seeks to raise $1M in smaller gifts, allowing everyone to participate.
The good news: with your help, The Bay Lights by artist Leo Villareal will return more magically than ever. The number of programmable LEDs will double to nearly 50,000, making the artwork visible to communities around the Bay. And for the first time, we seek to have the lights be safely visible to drivers on the Bay Bridge, creating a world-class nighttime public art portal into San Francisco.
The San Francisco-based art nonprofit Illuminate is leading this effort. Please join us in helping return this public art masterpiece. Your gift of any size will help. We will do this collectively, one dollar, one hundred dollars, or $1M at a time.
All gifts made to The Bay Lights 360 campaign are restricted and will be used only to cover Bay Lights-related expenses.

Leo Villareal’s exhibition at PACE, Interstellar, consists of fifteen mesmerizing, colorful sculptures that are a joy to watch.
From the PACE website-
Villareal’s practice is part of a lineage of artistic engagement that explores the connections between nature, technology, and human experience. The artist’s upcoming exhibition with Pace in New York will feature wall-based sculptures, including works from his new Nebulae series. Emitting hypnotic, diffused light, the Nebulae sculptures are informed by celestial imagery and evoke the dynamism of space through interplays of color and shape. Villareal creates unique and specific sequencing for each artwork through code that is generative and visceral, like nature itself. As such, no two sculptures are the same.
This presentation at Pace in New York will also include works realized at a scale that Villareal hasn’t explored in nearly a decade: two-foot square wall-mounted sculptures. These intimately scaled artworks, paired with their glass enclosures, encourage focused readings of Villareal’s abstractions. Like his larger works, the two-foot pieces invite viewers to consider the boundary separating physical and digital worlds.
This exhibition is on view until 4/29/23.

Leo Villareal’s “Interstellar” Generates the Visual and Sensorial Beauty of Code A seductive and serene feeling pervades the artist's lighting-based artworks on view at NYC's Pace Gallery In New York-based artist Leo Villareal‘s new exhibition, Interstellar, the light sculptor captures the cosmos through code as his abstract and ever-moving LED wall installations recall snapshots of the galaxy. Even more impressively, the artworks evoke sensations only felt when standing before something infinite. The show—on view now until 29 April … https://coolhunting.com/culture/leo-villareals-interstellar-generates-the-visual-and-sensorial-beauty-of-code/

San Francisco's Bay Bridge Goes Dark After A Decade of Light And Seeks Help To Bring It Back Bigger and Brighter.
Ten years ago this week artist Leo Villareal and the group ILLUMINATE celebrated the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Bay Bridge by draping it in light. The art installation titled “The Bay Lights” had 25,000 glowing LED lights installed on the North side suspender cables to illuminate the bridge that connects San Francisco to the East Bay. Those driving on the bridge were unable to see them…

The Bay Lights, 2013 - sculpture by Leo Villarreal.
Installed on the western span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in March of 2013, it was initially a to be a 2 year exhibit to commemorate the bridge’s 75th anniversary of its opening. It was so popular and beloved, it was closed in March of 2015, refitted, funded, and made a permanent addition that reopened on January 30, 2016.
It’s regularly featured during broadcasts of home games of the San Francisco Giants, the 49ers, the Golden State Warriors, the Oakland A’s, and formerly the Oakland Raiders (R.I.P.)
San Francisco has two beautiful bridges:
The Golden Gate Bridge, Queen of the Daytime. The Bay Bridge, Queen of the Nighttime.

ADDENDUM:
Illuminate The Arts has this thing where you can make a donation and dedicate one of the lights in this sculpture. I was given a certificate shortly after my Dad’s passing, so for my Sis and I, dedicated a light to our parents.
Take a stroll through The Bay Lights Search . (And if you type the word Shine or May into the Search box, you’ll see dedications with those words in it.)

"What are we waiting for anyways?" Harry grumbled.
"Harvey is trying to get Calliope out of the way. Pay attention, idiot." Leo griped. Harry sighed. Why did his brothers have to make these stupid schemes and involve him?
"Hey Calliope, I think the zipper on your dress is broken, Briar, could you help Calliope to the restroom to fix her dress? I'd hate for it to come undone and embarrass her," Harvey lied.
"Oh, thanks Harvey, yeah, could you come help me fix it Briar?" Calliope smiled.
"Yeah, come on," Briar sighed.
