what’s an unexplained event/conspiracy theory/urban legend you can’t shake the feeling that there might be something to it? one you can’t believe anyone gives any time to at all? a notorious “haunted” location you’d like to check out? any you’d be willing to spend the night in? what’s the first famous murder or disappearance you remember hearing about and how old were you? what’s the creepiest/most malevolent instrumentals-only piece of music you can think of? what’s a horror movie from the last decade you think is overrated? what’s a trope or concept in horror you think is really effective and is underutilized (books movies tv, any or all)?
SOPHIE I COULD KISS YOU ON THE FACE OKAY SO
i'm replying to each question like i'm greentexting because idk it's funnier
>Most hauntings i can't believe anyone gives any time to at all, i'm naturally a Scully so it takes a lot to convince me and it's usually so obviously fraud. Anything investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren i especially hate >It depends what you mean by "something to it" like the death of Cecil Lam, suaimhneas siorai di, i fully believe she was fucking murdered and the cops fucked the investigation and i'm still angry about it, but i don't believe anything supernatural was involved. The Valentich Disappearance had me going for a while, but i guess it turns out he probably faked it and was an avid UFO enthusiast soooo shrug emoji >I would love to go on a ghost tour of New Orleans. There's no one specific location that i'm like YES GIVE IT TO ME but i'd love to go to New Orleans for haunting type shit >I will spend the night in any haunted location i'm allowed to that wouldn't be insanely disrespectful i'd love that honestly >First disappearance i ever remember hearing about i was 7 and it was The Blair Witch Project so like lmaaoooo but noI think the first real urban legend/murder/anything i remember hearing about was The Bunnyman Bridge, since i actually live right nearby it so that shit was SCAAARYYY. Basically some guy who may or may not have been in a bunny mask or costume and may or may not have been a crackhead ran up on a couple random people and screamed at them for trespassing and menaced them with a hatchet. And of course that turned into a story about an escaped mental patient who killed people with an axe and hung up mutilated rabbit corpses in the woods and shit. I must have been...what, 7 or 8? Maybe younger? I can't remember. The first real crime i REALLY remember was the D.C. Sniper when i was 9 cause again, right near me. That shit TERRIFIED me as a kid i didn't wanna walk home from the bus stop cause i thought i was gonna get shot lmao >Most malevolent instrumental i can think of jeez that's a hard one i know the Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs soundtrack there are a lot of songs on that that are....there are some songs that are kind of beautiful, some that are tragic, but there's a lot in that game's soundtrack that's creepy as fuck >Horror movie i think is overrated...A Quiet Place. I mean don't get me wrong, i liked it, but it wasn't...y'know AMAZING. Left a lot to be desired. Also Bone Tomahawk which is more of a cult thing but like everyone who's heard of it loooooves it and i'm like okay it's really just that one scene though. One-scene wonder of a movie. Also racist. >PEOPLE DON'T USE ELDRITCH ABOMINATIONS ENOUGH or they don't use them right. Also i love the concept of never showing exactly what the monster is. It's often done poorly, which i think is what turns people off, but like At the Mountains of Madness, when the whole story just in the background there are these carvings of SOMETHING bad behind the mountains but the ancient aliens refuse to talk about it yeah it's a weird story and not much attention is drawn to it, and then at the very end the guy is in the plane and looks back and sees....................something and immediately goes stark raving screaming mad like that shit is haunting. Oh, there aren't enough movies like Underwater. I want sea monsters god fucking damn it.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

so re: urobu chi in madoka we are just replacing the "man/ghost" with a girl with grey hair, right? I buy that.
I think he has strayed away from these basic conventions a lot as of late, but he also has been working a lot less in general. I'm curious if you have a favorite of gen's work or if you feel you haven't absorbed enough of it to have an opinion (or maybe you just don't like any of it). while it does boil down to the basic framework you describe I feel like on the journey to that he explores some pretty interesting ideas. Just as well I also like the different ways he resolves his "everything sucks" narratives. at least I feel by the end usually there is more there than that basic idea but sometimes it takes too long to get there.
As far as zero is concerned, Nasu approved it basically all the way through its release and worked with gen on it so there is that. And when you consider Gen was basically given free reign there's no real reason for him to stick to the original concepts, I don't think (but I understand the argument for him to do just that). I guess my takeaway is if you find them incompatible (zero and stay) then that's fine because they were made by two completely different people, the same way I don't have Aliens in the same headspace as Aliens. They are different things that just happen to have the same characters.
I spent a lot of time just stating my own opinions rather than asking yours, sorry. Whatever you feel about Gen (I'm not a big fan but he's made some stuff I like), it's hard for me to say he did some interesting things that a lot of authors would be too afraid to do (or perhaps simply wouldn't be allowed to by their publishers).
anyway if you can/want to point me to where you've written more about these topics I'd be curious to see it!
I'm gonna apologize in advance because I'm using your ask to write my most comprehensive (and sympathetic) post on Urobuchi so far lmao
I should definitely open by clarifying that when I drop an opinion like that, I'm exaggerating my actual stance because I think it's funny to do it, so I'm not actually as anti-Urobuchi as I come off, it's just that I'm just not especially a fan (and at the end of the day, no matter what I say on here, I'm a pretty big Madoka fan who thinks Saya no Uta is a fantastic piece of horror and likes Nitroplus vns as a whole)
in general, when I sound overly negative about an author, it's usually because I don't feel the need to write out every time I find a piece of media okay or even good, so playing up some stronger opinions for a punchier line is always gonna result in what looks like a paradigm of blind praise and seething hatred. it can come off especially rough when preexisting connotations attach themselves to my rambles and rants
for example, me complaining about the misogynist tendencies of Urobuchi's writing is more of a ribbing than a hard moral judgment on whether it's got merit. I've got no idea what he's like outside of his work, besides that we like a lot of the same movies and he seems to get along with other people I hold in high regard. that's a big part of why I make a point of tending towards more tongue-in-cheek references to his choking fetish as opposed to anything with real substance
all that being said!
even though my stated opinions are oversimplifications of what I actually believe, I'm a little unfair to him, and I'm fully willing to acknowledge that. I disagree heavily with the way Zero was handled, especially in regards to how it handled preexisting characters, and it's one of those few situations where I wonder whether Nasu was actually right to lend so much creative freedom to a partner on a project he was (by all accounts) so closely involved with
Gen has a fantastic sense for horror and despair, and it's solely because he produces stories so close to what I'd consider amazing that I complain about the things holding them back. an example I'll point out is that I've never gone after the low hanging fruit of gun jokes because, while it is a recurring theme in his writing, I genuinely appreciate his fixation on the specifics of firearms
I haven't kept up with Urobuchi's stuff recently, largely because of time constraints, but I really do hope he's been working his way out of the boxes he worked himself into. if he were a purely mediocre writer who made consistently okay work, I don't think I'd have any opinions on him at all, after all
in the end, I really dislike Zero because of both what it tries to be and what it doesn't try to be. if it had been a more boring production, I'd have much less to say about it. I think that's a pretty good encapsulation of my feelings on him. I'm never bored, regardless of whether I'm having a good time

Well since Twitter is fucking dying (again), I guess Imma post my media watching stuff here now. Imma tag it with Cherry'sMediaWell so like if you do not wanna see it, mute that. Also gonna post what I done so far this year under a read more. Gonna post basically any media I consume that takes more then a hour except for youtube videos.
Jerma & Otto: The Curse of The Late Streamer- ... technically the first real game I sat down and played this year... as a fan game it was fine if not unfunny , as a point and click its reallllly bad 2/5
Tumblr media
AI Sommnium Files: Nirvana Initiative- Finally got around to playing Nirvana Initiative, I am a little conflicted as like there was plenty I was not a fan of this time around, some odd plot beats here and there really muddled it. But when it got good it really got good so like ultimately a strong recommend if you like the first one , but understand it is in my opinion not as good. Still worth the time but missing something sadly from being a stand out sequel. Still is a 4/5 tho.
Tumblr media
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog- This was something alright, as a April fools joke game I really could not have lower expectations but it was really solid. The story was fun and lighthearted and did not fall into the 4/1 trap of just being zany for zany sake. Genuine great time 4.5/5
Tumblr media
Class Action Park- An "okay" doc, it didn't shed any new light on the subject. The animated segments where unexpected and honestly unneeded. Still a really interesting subject that is fun to hear about. I liked how they went though each rides history 3.5/5
Tumblr media
Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County- A goofy old fake horror doc. As a horror movie its not the best, but it is fun to watch now just to kinda peek into alien mythos. 3/5
Tumblr media
One Killer Punch- a really short 45 min ish doc? While the first two cases made me go "huh that's interesting" the last case really made me feel emotions, def worth a watch at the short time length 4/5
Tumblr media
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line- Played this one kinda worried at first cus I loved the original on 3ds and thought it couldn't be adapted. Really fun and loads of songs to play with only real complaint is wish more enemy variation. 4.5/5
Tumblr media
Mario Warfare (rewatch)- still peak cinema (10/10)
Tumblr media
FE Engage: Fell Xenologue- Kinda weird beating and ranking this before the actual game but what can I say I wanted the units. Honestly I feel I am way more positive on this then I was for the Cinder Shadows, I just was way more invested in the story here then in there. the plot actually made me curious where it was going, I liked the twists and turns for the most part, and enjoyed its darker turn. Of course I can not talk about the dlc without talking about the maps, I played on normal which I am thankful for because god I would have raged quit on higher difficulties. 1-3 where pretty normal if not kinda bland maps. 4 was a really neat concept for a map (well neat for engage its been done in other FE games). 5 just SUCKS tho def would not play it on higher difficulty. 5 was fine on normal honestly just kinda eh. I liked the characters and stuff so idk I enjoyed my time with the Fell. Nel is prob one of my fav engage characters... while Nil is one of my least lmao
Tumblr media
Fire Emblem Engage- Story wise was not a huge fan, felt like a big downgrade from 3 houses story (not saying 3 houses story was prefect but). The two things that really save this game for me is the later game units and the gameplay. Love almost all the later game units they add a lot of flavor, which I am glad for because early game units for the most part did like nothing for me and I was worried the whole game would have been like that. Map wise one of my favs, loved all the fun gimmicks and spins on maps. ultimately still had super fun (4/5)
Tumblr media
Spookware- I went in really wanting to like this one. I love wario ware and funny/spooky games but dang this disappointed. Biggest issue was how damn buggy it was, constantly got bugs that made me loose levels some broke the game entirely. Episode 2 mircogames where all just GOD awful like I almost put it down multiple times. It also felt like they just ran out of clever mircogames and plot with episode 2 its weird cus it was just such a massive down grade. Plot started out interesting and fun but just ran out of steam super fast. Sadly to me (2/5)
Tumblr media
Necrobarista- I REALLY liked this one. The constantly changing perspectives could be a real turn off for some but I thought it was fun. Story was really interesting/fun, liked the characters a ton. Only real complaint is I wished it was longer and a little more fleshed out 4.5/5
Tumblr media
Jurassic Park Dominion- RE6 did the plot better 2/5
Tumblr media
Fostering Apocalypse- Reaaaaaly short vn, that was hella cute with great art. Honestly so short not much to say, was not a huge fan of how mechanics work around endings but still a good time 4/5
Tumblr media
The Spirit & the Mouse- This was great, a fairly short but really enjoyable experience. Kinda a walking sim, there is no really challenge or anything but I don't really think there needs to be. The story it tells is unique and makes me smile. 4.5/5
Tumblr media
Idol Showdown- idk not really that big into idols but for the low price of free this is a pretty fun 30 mins or so with friends atleast. Again this game is NOT DEEP but like its a free game what do you expect lmao 3/5
Tumblr media
Spawn HBO show- Overall really like this show... but it has some problems esp season 3. I think I liked the concept more then the actual story but like still was a fun time. Glad I saw it either way. Twitch and Burke are the best in this. 3/5
Tumblr media
Wandersong- Honestly do not think I can put into words how this game made me feel. Back half of story was fantastic, story was well written and fun. Game play was really fresh without feeling tedious. Design and everything made me really happy. Honestly easily a 5/5
Tumblr media
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special- Decided to finally watch this since vol 3 came out... its fine. Animated segments where awful like wow, and the plot was really meh. It was nice to see more of the guardians interactions tho. 3/5
Tumblr media
GOTG Vol.3- I may be a little crazy for saying this but this was an amazing send off to the best franchise in the MCU. Story was great, and like the first two movies the characters all played great off each other. The high evolutionary was one of the few great mcu villains 5/5
Tumblr media
Please Be Happy- Sadly I did not like this one as much as I did the other two vns I played by the same devs, Idk just seems the weakest of the bunch. That being said still really solid, if this is their low , then the bar is still pretty high. 4/5
Tumblr media
Mario Movie- Yeah it was fine, nothing amazing but did not really expect it to be lmao. The references where fun at times. No where as good as Mario Warfare tho. 3.5/5
Tumblr media
Evil Dead Rise- A really enjoyable horror movie actually. I honestly do not have much to say it was just a well put together experience. Evil Dead continues to be one of the most solid long standing horror franchises. 4/5
Tumblr media
Gunbusters- Like other Hideki Anno works I started off not feeling it, but it got so so fucking good in the second half. I really love the actions scenes and it did make me cry at the really end. Makes me want to get more into mechs cus this is great as fuck. 4.5/5
Tumblr media
Diebuster- You can TELL they went on to make Gurren after this, honestly I did like gunbusters more overall but this is a solid af followup. 4/5
Tumblr media
Soul Hackers 2- Kinda conflicted here, REALLY liked the characters and concept... but like the pacing is not really up to par. Wished there was more here. Also people where not lying there is some REALLY awful dungeon design here. Still Ringo and gang are great imo. 3.5/5
Tumblr media
Transformers- Some fights where okay actually, but god everything else was abysmal writing was laughable bad wow. 2/5
Tumblr media
Batman Soul of the Dragon- It is weird cus like, it is clear the makers of this movie really wanted to make a fun campy 70s kung fu movie but it really just fails at it. Movie also just REALLY did not need batman, like if you took him out nothing would change, felt forced 2/5
Tumblr media
Spider-Man:Across the Spider-Verse-Going in I actually had mixed expectations. I knew people love it but the trailers really turned me off as it just seemed.. worse then the original. Glad to say that is FAR from the case, a huge improvement on something already amazing. Easy 5/5
Tumblr media
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen- I went in remembering this being worse then the first.. but actually it was better. ITS STILL AWFUL but like the bar was low as fuck. I am scared for the next one as this is where I stop watching as a kid 2/5
Tumblr media

(^^^ from howling (and bleeding) at the moon: menstruation, monstrosity and the double in the ginger snaps werewolf trilogy by erin m. flaherty)
tw for discussion of suicide ideation
okay. so. i agree with the “doppelgänger narrative” idea but the idea that brigitte “[comes] to stand for the symbolic order she resists so enthusiastically at the start of the film” is, in my reading of the ending, a misinterpretation of what ginger’s “monstrosity” signifies in the film. flaherty’s reading follows a common structure of creature features in which the monstrous transgresses social norms, so the overarching conflict is the “other” vs. normalcy. in that case, killing the monster at the end is a return to normal and reinforces societal expectations. however, i don’t think that ginger snaps is actually that kind of story. at the beginning, both ginger and brigitte “resist so enthusiastically” being part of society to the point of rejecting life, becoming isolated and codependent. before ginger gets her period, brigitte tells her that she better not become basic like all the other kids at their school, but she leaves her behind pretty quickly once she becomes interested in teen society sex drugs and rock n roll and is more accepted by her peers. brigitte continues not to give a fuck about what anyone thinks of her, even though ginger is part of that world now and not their own. part of ginger’s transformation actually helps her gain social acceptance - she is now part of the “symbolic order” even as she transgresses it. i’m not saying her transformation doesn’t transgress this order, or that she gains the acceptance of everyone at her school - trina in particular certainly isn’t a fan - but especially at the beginning, the changes that she undergoes is perceived as her becoming a “normal” teenage girl instead of the freaky death-obsessed kid ostracized by her classmates.
i would argue that ginger’s transformation makes her both super- and unfeminine - super-feminine in the sense that all the side effects of puberty for people with uteruses (menstruation, body hair/shaving, developing new body parts, hormones/mood swings, and awareness of sexuality/being sexually active) are exaggerated during her transformation - and a lot of these symptoms are ways in which a woman’s body is policed or found unacceptable or gross; unfeminine in the sense that, first of all, she’s becoming inhuman and gender is a very human concept, and second of all, she still doesn’t fit the mold of female expectation (i.e. shaving, dressing a certain way, being demure or nurturing, not being overconfident, not being a slut OR not being a prude, not having physical strength, etc). flaherty does make this argument via david j. hogan’s dark romance: sexuality and the horror film: “in complete confrontation with the classic view of the werewolf as ‘masculinity carried to an outrageous extreme,’ the werewolf is actually aligned with femininity carried to an extreme,” an idea that i think works really well in discussion of ginger snaps in particular. she also rejects the identity of “girl” several times - “wrists are for girls, i’m slitting my throat,” yelling at brigitte and saying she’s “just a stupid little girl” - and disparagingly points out the difference between the expectations for male and female sexuality - “he got laid, i’m just a lay.” so.... i definitely do get the interpretation of ginger’s death to have a kind of punitive logic for transgressing gendered expectations in these two different ways, but i think that’s a meta-criticism on the part of the writers, not the role that brigitte fills (for a movie that rejects the “death by morality call” of hollywood monster movies, they really did still punish her narratively for moral transgressions lmao - like flaherty says, “it appears that as subversive as the ginger snaps films are in respect to the werewolf narrative, they also reflect a deep cultural ambivalence about female identity. there is no option offered to ginger or brigitte, and due tot heir unwillingness to accept the roles predetermined for them in the society in which they live, they must be punished”). honestly i think i am nitpicking a little bit because i guess i do ultimately agree with flaherty that the story follows a normalcy > otherness > return to normalcy pattern with gendered ideas of what normalcy is, and where she loses me is her interpretation of brigitte and ginger’s social standing. to me, ginger seems really frustrated trying to navigate gender roles and her own position in society - but she is engaging with society.
you know who’s still not engaging with society? brigitte. she isn’t part of that “normalcy” at all, so to me, her rejection of the lycanthropy that ginger embraces signifies less that she sides with the social order and wants to reinforce normalcy, and more that she did a lot of growing up over the course of this movie as well, in a different direction than ginger did, and she reclaims her agency as well as her will to live. i feel like the monstrosity vs. normalcy framework ignores the fact that both ginger and brigitte are actively suicidal at the beginning of the movie - the first shot we get of ginger is her holding a knife to her wrist. at the beginning, brigitte hesitantly agrees to their suicide pact despite her obvious reservations. at the end, she strongly asserts, “i’m not dying in this room with you. i’m not dying.” so if we consider ginger’s mimetic role for brigitte, killing her isn’t reestablishing the social norm, it’s rejecting her own destructive and suicidal tendencies. i think her narrative arc teaches her: 1) how to make her own decisions separate from ginger and have agency in her own life, 2) recognition of her mother’s feelings of estrangement from her family, 3) how to connect with other people in a way that isn’t codependent, 4) rejection of suicide ideation. all of these lessons are ways of treating yourself and others with respect, compassion, and understanding - even though brigitte doesn’t change dramatically, magically becoming a saccharinely nice person or a social butterfly. she maintains her isolation and personality much more than ginger does over the course of the film. while at the beginning their fascination with their own deaths “not only demonstrates the duo’s disgust at the banality of their suburban surroundings, it also proclaims their self-stylized exclusion from the heterosexually fueled dynamics of the teen scene” (via menstrual monsters: the reception of the ginger snaps cult horror franchise), it’s ginger, not brigitte, who ends up participating in this “compulsive heterosexing high school culture,” where brigitte’s choice to not commit suicide isn’t her opting into this culture, but attempting to find a less destructive way of escaping or coping with it.
flaherty argues that because brigitte’s first period is never discussed in the films, “she remains a child and therefore is unable to understand the true restrictiveness of woman as Other, what leads ginger to eventually embrace and enjoy her monstrosity,” but in unleashed, a fair amount of time has passed and i think it’s fair to say that brigitte no longer seems child-like (that role is assumed by ghost), and also she starts experiencing the same kind of monstrous sexuality as ginger did in the first movie - i think it misrepresents her characterization in the sequel to say that she maintains “child” status. i also think it’s not relevant to try to distinguish between “girl” and “woman” in terms of the monstrous-feminine. she still experiences alienation and otherness because she’s female and transgresses gender roles. so.... i don’t know. it’s a weird argument to make, especially since, like i said before, i consider this story a kind of coming of age for both sisters. “lycanthropy and femaleness” are not “ultimately unknowable” to her because.... she does become a werewolf over the course of both movies and she’s already female (like..... getting your period doesn’t magically make you a Real Woman lol)
i also think it’s significant that as a stand-alone movie (ignoring the sequel, which is worth watching but seriously bleak as hell) the ending is tragic but tacitly hopeful as well - as far as we know at that point brigitte has the cure (which actually works!) and is not going to kill herself. in her final confrontation with ginger, she has the cure in one hand and a knife in the other hand, and i think that nicely represents the choice that is hanging over her head the entire movie: choosing to live or choosing to die. (flaherty calls this “a telling moment of double phallic-appropriation” which..... meh. okay. not every weapon/tool used in a horror movie has to be a phallic symbol but also, sure, whatever. that’s one way to read it i guess). ginger made her decision at the very beginning of the movie
this quote by karen walton expresses this interpretation really well:
The two sisters had this childhood bond with their pact. These two sisters were also best friends who created a bubble for themselves and took strength from each other, nourished and informed each other for a long time; but the film is not just the story of Ginger turning into a monster. It is also a story about Brigitte surviving her sister who is on a death spiral. Ginger's is a story of self-destruction. But where people get confused is that they think Ginger is the hero, but the film is really about a sister who survives a sister, who survives a best friend. An intimate relationship that becomes unhealthy and deadly.
and i’ve talked a little bit about why i feel uncomfortable with attaching a ~*girl power*~ narrative to ginger so i won’t get to much into that but i have some thoughts about that here
also i’ve said a little bit about this before and i am basically copy/pasting from a post i already made but with a doppelgänger story like this, especially with a focus on women and madness, to me it immediately brings to mind jane eyre. i am thinking in terms of the mimetic function of jane/bertha and brigitte/ginger, with the repressed emotions and desires of the protagonist coming through in the actions of the “madwoman” character. especially brigitte’s assertion of “now i am you” when she voluntarily lets ginger turn her into a werewolf. the “madwoman” is portrayed as bestial, hypersexual, intemperate with substances, jealous, vengeful, as well as dealing with extreme anger toward confinement (ginger’s panic at getting locked up and her escape and weaponized sexuality brand of revenge is so similar to bertha like. trying to burn rochester alive and biting her brother badly enough that he passes out and other shit like that). but ALSO the other women in jane eyre have a mimetic function as well, where they can be read as potential paths for jane to follow (these choices generally can be summarized as dead or married). i think ginger snaps can be read the same way - ginger, trina, and her mother are the models of womanhood brigitte is presented with, and she is repeatedly told that what’s happening to ginger is normal, that all women experience that, and soon she will too. like the women in jane eyre, they’re models of femininity that she rejects but has to navigate because there are no other models for her. these three characters are either killed (directly or indirectly) or abandoned by her by the end of the movie. it’s actually ginger who defines the roles that women are cast into: “a slut, a bitch, a tease, or the virgin next door.” this is similar the female archetypes that jane has to navigate (and resist) throughout jane eyre. anyway this is a really roundabout way of saying that although brigitte does reject her worldview from the beginning of the movie, she doesn’t accept social order and normalcy. she doesn’t fall into any easily defined category. which is the point - “no one thinks girls do fucked up shit” but of course they do, no one thinks they can be more complex than these categories but of course they are, no one entertains the possibility that brigitte isn’t going to follow some made up universal experience of girlhood but she resists that through the end of the movie. she’s still a total weirdo <3
so yeah, i will also disagree with the assertion that both sisters lose their identities, because while i think there is a loss or a shift of identity in both ginger and brigitte, like flaherty argues, part of brigitte’s narrative arc is figuring out who she is without her dependence on her sister. brigitte saying “now i am you” feels less about loss of identity to me than actually identifying herself with the traits she sees (or used to see) in ginger - where ginger’s response (“i know you are, but what am i?”) indicates actual loss of identity rather than something transitory
oh and also one of the main claims of this paper is that the male werewolf’s source of pain is beyond the “lifetime of morning-afters where he must confront the previous night’s excess,” and is really his “bodily alignment with another ungraspable Other, the woman” which 1) i don’t think follows the definition of the Other she establishes earlier in the paper as something that is repressed in a self or society - this use of “otherness” seems more about alignment with something different than his own identity and less about the jekyll and hyde comparison she evokes with the expression of a repressed self (imo i don’t think she should’ve used that story to support her argument since it isn’t actually about werewolves, even though i get her point about the repressed self, it’s kind of irrelevant to her argument), 2) brigitte in the first movie doesn’t seem repressed to me - she genuinely doesn’t seem to have the same impulses as ginger does and it’s not until the sequel that she actively is attempting to repress the changes that are happening to her; however, since the paper does concern the whole trilogy, i think the point is still valid, but there’s such a heavy focus on the first movie that i feel the need to dispute that interpretation of her character arc, and 3) i don’t think this interpretation really lines up with classic werewolf movies - there’s nothing particularly feminine about your standard werewolf except arguably the cyclical alignment with the moon that ginger snaps uses as a menstruation metaphor, but like. for example. i would never watch an american werewolf in london and think, “oh, his distress isn’t actually about killing innocent people, loss of control, loss of sanity, guilt and mourning because of the death of his friend, a predetermined fate, and suicide, it’s about him being female-coded” or something. like, yes, “the tragedy of the male werewolf is believed to lie exclusively in the deep anguish he feels in violating the very societal boundaries he has come to live under” and it’s interesting to dig deeper into that in terms of gender and sexuality, but i don’t think femaleness is inherent in the distress of the male werewolf - of course this is true in ginger snaps (with jason’s transformation being particularly distressing to him because it mirrors menstruation). the assertion that the classic werewolf “bleeds uncontrollably until his transformation is complete” similarly seems unfounded to me because i’ve never seen that in werewolf movies and she doesn’t cite where she finds that symptom of the transformation - maybe i am missing something there? if anyone knows of a depiction where that’s the case let me know, because that’s definitely a stronger argument for werewolves = menstruation-coded.
and re: the quote i cited earlier about werewolves = femininity taken to the extreme: i don’t think that argument holds true in the classic depiction/cultural perception of the werewolf. i think this post makes a more supportable (and concise) argument:
There are hardly any female werewolves because they break all the classic rules of femininity. They force you to confront female violence, strength, size, grotesqueness and uncontrollability. Historically female shapeshifters always shift into something dangerous (snake) or sleek (cat) or dainty (bird) but female werewolves ignore the masculine gaze completely. They're distorted beasts that have no ulterior motive except to destroy. Nothing about them is nurturing or modest. They're the opposite of what a woman "should be." Their omission from pop culture is not an accident.
all that being said, i did enjoy this article, especially starting at the section titled “wrists are for girls; i’m slitting my throat:” ginger fitzgerald’s monstrosity and all the stuff about ginger’s transformation as a reflection of "monstrosity” as a teenage girl, and suburban landscape of repression. one description of brigitte’s conflict that i actually really like: “unlike the male werewolf’s double, brigitte yearns not for the eradication of her other half but for the reconciliation.” i think it’s a really interesting read, even if i don’t agree with a lot of it. and maybe i’m way off base? maybe i’m interpreting brigitte as a character too generously? let me know what you guys think

What would be each of the boarding school kids' favorite movies?
Marlon: “Lost Boys”. It’s been a headcanon of mine ever since I saw mullet boy’s concept art that his hairstyle was inspired by David from the movie and that’s why he thinks it looks cool.Plus I can weirdly see him liking the movie in general.
Louis: “Howl’s Moving Castle”. Main character goes on an adventure that leads to discovering herself and her inner strength/power, with a romance involving a charming and mysterious wizard where they help each other to grow, and an example of a really good Studio Ghibli soundtrack? I think it would hit lots of marks for Louis. Especially with the Ghibli trope of having beautiful and whimsical fantasy with melancholic dashes of slice of life woven within it. (Bonus movies: “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “La La Land”)
Violet: “Coraline” (or “Little Shop of Horrors”). Both very dry humour and witty films with weird and spooky undertones to them. I can see Violet really digging the talking alien plant or how messed up the mother is in Coraline. That kind of combination of cheesy campness and creepiness, you know? (Bonus: “Ghost World” or “Scott Pilgrim Vs The World”).
Tenn: “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” - because it’s about this artsy kid becoming a superhero with really amazing animation and characters in it. I feel like Miles Morales is someone Tenn could imagine himself being and looking up to. I can also see him getting Violet into it as well and them pretending to be Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen around the school for fun. (Originally chose “The Iron Giant” for him).
Brody: “The Princess Diaries” - there is absolutely no reason I can give for this one besides the fact that I get that impression from her. Also “Black Swan” as I like to imagine Brody being into ballet and movies that have that sort of elegance to them with hidden meaning.
Aasim: “Reservoir Dogs”. I was originally going to choose a mystery based movie, but for some reason I can see Aasim being a Tarantino fan. I feel like he would appreciate those kinds of movies and have the most “movie critic” taste in film out of all of the kids (I also view Aasim being a Star Wars & Back To The Future fan as well).
Ruby: “Godzilla” - Ruby is secretly a monster movie fan and no one can take this away from me. I also get the feeling Ruby would be the Potterhead of the group as well.
Willy: “Jurassic Park” - I can see Willy really digging this movie for some reason and being intrigued by the creation of the dinosaurs and how they move (like the giant T Rex machinery).
Mitch: “The Dark Knight”- A great comicbook movie with awesome action scenes and special effects which I think Mitch would appreciate.
Omar: “Kung Fu Panda”. I like to imagine Omar being the type of person to sit down and analyse the symbolism and messages in movies (I don’t know why my headcanons for Omar are basically just me, but anyway lmao). I think he would enjoy the beauty of the film as well as the the clever writing (plus I just realized that there is a clever use of food in it that I think he would appreciate). An alternative movie would be “Spirited Away”.
Minnie: “Moulin Rouge” or “Pariah”. I also like to think her and Sophie used to enjoy “The Parent Trap” together.
Rosie: “101 Dalmations”. Marlon watches it with her.

15 questions, tag 15 people. (Tagged by @da5haexowin!)
1) Are you named after anyone?
My parents have given me conflicting origins for my name (which is supremely weird, but I love it because I’m a nerd), but the dominant version is that they were randomly watching Star Trek: Voyager one day, misheard B’Elanna Torres’ name, and decided to name me after the misheard name. So I guess I’m technically named after a half-alien in a fictional universe?
2) When was the last time you cried?
Two days ago; I was at my high school celebration :’D
3) Do you have kids?
Nope
4) Do you use sarcasm a lot?
I use it, but not excessively.
5) What’s the first thing you notice about people?
It depends on the person. Usually it’s something about their physical appearance, of course, but it can be something they say or do.
6) What’s your eye colour?
Hazel; leaning more towards brown.
7) Scary movies or Happy Endings?
If we’re talking scary movies as in horror movies, definitely happy endings. But I do love my depressing movies, and I write a lot of catastrophic endings myself, so I don’t mind if something ends tragically. (I literally live off of angst; I’m not joking, if I did not have access to gut-wrenching stories my soul would shrivel up)
8) Any special talents?
What defines a “special” talent? xD I play the flute at university level, also play cello (but kind of suck at it) and I’ve written two (unpublished) books. Any of that count?
9) Where were you born?
In Boston, but I’ve never been there at a time when I could remember :)
10) What are your hobbies?
Music (solo and ensemble, and after exams are done I’m hoping to finally do a bit more than dabble in composition), writing (I don’t know when, but I’ll get published one day; it’s been my dream since I was eight), and drawing (I used to just draw horses, but I’ve been slowly teaching myself humans and I’m hoping to just... get good... I’d love to do movie concept art... and yes, I do have a bit of an artist identity crisis going LMAO)
Oh yes, I also listen to music soundtracks and watch video game cinematic trailers religiously and read piles and piles of books. All the time. I’m that one student at school who doesn’t need to check out books with her library card because all the library staff knows me by name xD
11) Have you any pets?
Two cats!! (Their names are Hermione and Jimi, and they are my fluffy babies)
12) What sport do you play/have played?
Once upon a time I played soccer, but then I started commuting to school for three hours a day and honestly I’m a lump.
13) How tall are you?
Somewhere between 160 and 180 cm?
14) Favourite subject in school?
Art, because getting to rant about my obsession with video game login screens as well as movie screencaps and getting a grade for it, as well as getting marks for trying to learn how to draw humans, is the best thing ever.
15) Dream Job?
If I could, I would be this crazy multi-tasking back-end person on movies. I would write the script, do concept art, compose the soundtrack, play flute and cello for you on the soundtrack recording if needed. Also, I’d design marketing material for you. And be an extra on set. Draw you storyboards? I’ll be your ideas person, because trust me, my brain has waaaay too many ideas for me to handle alone!
Seriously though, I have no idea where I’m headed. I want to be a published author. I’ll also be studying graphic design at uni, so I’m hoping to not only get the skills to do cool things for “real life” applications (like business websites and marketing material... book covers... movie posters... oh no, I’m moving into the fantasy realm again...) but also teach myself to be a competent concept artist and illustrator. I also love music, but don’t want to be a music teacher, so... I have no idea where that’ll go. (I’m so excited to do a music diploma at uni though!!) I also love movies to death, so if I could somehow work on movies that would be... the death of me, I’d probably die of excitement, let’s be honest.
Basically, I have no idea what my dream job is, or if it actually exists at all... I suspect that my life will always be about making compromises between my excessive amount of obsessions xD
Um I don’t actually know 15 people so I’ll tag @sweetcatminteareblog @guil-t-pleasurez and @dontwaitforinspiration (you guys are of course not obligated to do this!)

40 questions because why not.
1.do you prefer to shower when you wake up or before you go to sleep?. Can I have both? I like to shower in the morning because I can clean off any  sweat I may have produced when I slept and it also helps me start my day. Before bed helps me unwind and clean off the germs of the day… but I may sweat in the middle of the night… hmmmmm I guess morning showers LOL
2. does it bother you to sleep with the lights on. Yes, I really cant sleep with any type of light in the room. I always find myself waking up if I see light.
3. cigarettes, marijuana, or neither? Neither fam.
4. beer, liquor, or neither? Liquor, I hate the taste of beer 5. what is the biggest impact you hope to make throughout your lifetime?  Probably being able to help someone with their journey get through the darkness of mental diseases. This is a part of the reason why i want to go into the field of psychiatry.
6. what’s your favourite movie genres.  Uhhh, romantic comedies, animation, horror, fantasy, and anime (if that’s a thing) 7. puns or dirty jokes? Dirty jokes boiiiii. My pun game needs work 8. bubble bath, bath bomb, or bath salts. Probably bubble bath. I haven’t tried the other two. 9. you wake up to find you’ve traded places with a celebrity – who is it? Hmmm I don’t pay too much attention to many celebrities lives so I cant really answer 10. you wake up to find you’ve traded places with a fictional character – who is it? Probably Monkey D. Luffy from one piece. Hes always carefree, does what he wants, eats all day, goes on these dope adventures with his crew and will beat someone’s ass if they step to him wrong. I wouldn’t mind living a life like that for a day or two. Although Zoro is my favorite character I prefer luffys lifestyle a little more.
11. what are you wearing? A grey shirt and blue joggers? WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW HUH? 12. what is your earliest memory?. Crawling on my mom’s bed and she picking me up with a big smile while making  some kind of going up sound. I know I was a baby because even to this day she does that when she plays with other small children.   13. moon or stars? Stars because I like to lay down and count them. Also having sex under the stars is on my bucket list LOLOL 14. sunrise or sunset?. Sunrise.  I love the crisp air and quiet atmosphere of everything being asleep.  During times like that it feels the world is at a stand-still and I can take a second and breathe maybe even go for a jog. Oh and you cant forget the colors of the sky: they so purrrrdy . 15. what’s the best present you’ve ever received? The gift of life boiiiiii. Nah but for a material gift, I hate to say this but, probably a hand written piece of poetry my ex gave me. It a cheesy love poem that made my heart flutter at time. no one has ever done something that for me before so it was something special.  I haven’t looked at it in years and don’t plan on doing it any time soon. That bridge was burned  many years ago cuz fuck my ex lmaooo
16. what’s your favourite scent? Vanilla or lavender. I use to use candles with those scents as a way to calm myself during a time of depression. In a sense, I associate them both with calmness 17. what do you think about when you need to be in a calm state of mind?  Thinking of myself as a flowing river. This concept came to me after witnessing a small stream on street carry away a twig during the rain. The way I saw it was that twig representing a problem of any sort and the water being my conscious. Basically my conscious developed the habit of analyzing the given problem and determines if it needs to be addressed now, later, or not even be addressed at all. It’s a way I practice mindfulness lol 18. what do you think about when you need motivation? “I know I can fucking do this, so let me stop being a bum and do it” sounds a little harsh but that’s how I get myself moving lmaoo
19. list 5 things you like most about yourself.
My personality
The melanin in ma skin
Dance abilities
Being able to push through most of my anxiety and depression
Kinky af 20. do you have many friends or do you prefer to keep a close circle? I have a small circle of true friends mostly because I dread small talk with new people because ive never been too interested in it with strangers and you know small talk is the best way to start friendships soooooo. I can say this though I have a large number of acquaintances and I probably wouldn’t mind building deeper friendships with them. 21. if you had the chance to be immortal exactly as you are now, would you take that opportunity? Although it’s a tempting offer, im going to say nah to immortality.  Sure, it would be nice to witness how the rest of history will unfold and being able to live forever but it comes at a high cost. The cost being that youll out live everything and everyone you love and cherish. Plus there will come a time when everything ends and you’ll be the only one left, wandering endlessly in the hallowed shell of what you once called home…. That got dark LOL #PessimismOnFleek
22. what do you think of when you wake up? I think of three things in this order:
“….need food”
“I wonder how kn is doing”
“what the fuck do I need to do today?”
23. what’s your favourite word? Breathe. This word helps me calm and recollect myself in time of anxiety and also allows me to take a second and appreciate life.   24. if you could change your name, what would you change it to? I would keep my name the same, I love it actually lmaooo
25. what would your name be if you were the opposite/another gender?  I asked my mom about this before and apparently I would have been a Diana lmaooo 26. turn ons? I have turn ons for both physical and personality
Physical: freckles or small moles on the face. Glasses (bring yo blind ass here girlll) a nice warm smile, long hair although I don’t mind short hair. Ticklish. Has a nice style
Personality: Really kindhearted, loves animals, willing to sit down and talk about finding a solution to our problem if we fight, motivated by a dream,  passionate about her craft or hobby, doesn’t mind carrying the convo at times, is comfortable with silence at times. Knowledgeable about things she finds interesting, does little things for me like buying me my favorite snack as a surprise for when she sees me.  Is comfortable with my level of kinkiness and sexual expression through words. Keeps up with and feeds off my dark, sexual, awkward humor. Not afraid to speak her mind.
27. turn offs? A girl that tries to have “the best of both worlds” basically flirting with multiple dudes at once. Has a history of cheating.  Completely selfish(only concerned with what I can offer her and no “what can I do for them”). The “im fine” text when we both KNOW something is wrong. Goes ghost out of nowhere. Liars. thinks relationships are temporary  and not looking for something long term (I hate wasting time). Treating other people like shit, fake (talks shit about someone then next thing you know they’re the best of  friends) entertains other dudes KNOWING damn well they have a thing for her.  Says “My feelings changed” (three words I despise)
28. kinks? Bondage, neck bites, ear nibbles, lip biting while kissing, biting any part of my body really lmao.(those three areas will rev me up real quick ) letting me pull her hair, licking/ kissing random spots on her body. heaving breathing….lots of it pls. dark colored knee socks/thigh highs if she wears those.. LAWDDDDD *nose bleed*(this could be a slight fetish).  Lap dances and strip teases (both combined as well)   29. what’s your “type”? Uhhh, never really had to think about it until now but glasses, long hair, older, the “social butterfly that’s lowkey and introvert” woke, wants to help me grow, supportive, caring will call me out on my shit, intelligent, high ass gpa (why is that relevant? Idk )
30. give a piece of advice. Everything happens for a reason. Whether you believe in a higher power or not, certain things occur in your life as a way to prepare you for the future, teach you something about yourself, or aid in your growth. You just have to stop and look at the positive in the situation. 31. do you fear death? Nah, but I do want to live my live to the fullest and live to be at least 96.   32. do you believe there is anything that exists after death? Ive juggled the idea around in my head and, similar to the person I snagged this questionnaire from, I definitely  love the idea of reuniting with lost loved ones in some kind of after live. I also like to believe reincarnation is a thing only because it would be dope to die and come back as a giant octopus lmaoooo, but seriously the idea of coming back to life as a different creature is fascinating 33. what expectations do you set for yourself? do you live up to them? Honesty, trying my best at whatever I do, always stay true to myself,  not being pressured ny others. I think I live up to these pretty well but recently ive decided to stop being passive of things that bother me so I guess im still working on that 34. are you a good friend? would you want to be friends with the type of friend that you are? I think im a pretty good friend. Im always down to listen and support my friends with whatever their endeavors may be. Im very chill, understanding, and mature so you don’t have to worry about me  creating drama of any sort. Yeah I would befriend myself if possible 35. dinosaurs or space? Dinosaurs because I’ve always found archaeology to be interesting and I actually love learning about history. I loved T-rexes ever since the first Jurassic park  film I saw. 36. do you believe in aliens?  If we as a species could evolve from particles who’s to say creatures on a distant planet couldn’t do the same? So I guess you could say I don’t deny the existence of them. 37. do you believe in ghosts? Not really but you’ll never catch me messing with an oujia board or casually exploring a proclaimed haunted house. Aint nobody got time for that (similar to the previous question I don’t deny their existence) 38. describe your style? Uses a LOT of dark colors. Its very simple and classy but nothing over the top. I love to wear beaded bracelets because I like fidgeting with them when im bored or anxious. Oh I like flannels as well. Idk if that paints a decent picture lmao 39. send me your name, I’ll post what I think your aesthetic would be. Bish whet? 40. post a photo of yourself? Look at my tumblr default lmao

ahh thanks! you're very nice, but it actually happens with my native language as well, so i tend to apologize bc of that😅😅 it's related to dyslexia to some extend. i'm sorry to hear your college is not that good, can you change next year maybe? or is the only place you can find that major? What other courses would you like to do?? your content is already gorgeous!! oh here is not winter but i like to start with time bc i don't like to rush things and end up with a vest or smth lmao. 1/? 🍰-sss
😡😡you're right! i imagine them adopting some cute kittens, i mean i think most of svt loves cats but they seem to match cats personalities. and yes! jun + royalty + matching aes colors, lately i've been loving this concept, and i need to thank you for that! i think we all love miracles in december, even withouth loving ballads jbdkfjsb, it's one of my fav "old" kpop songs. THAT MOVIE! i remember it and its plot twist was so clever!! you can never go wrong with ghibli tbh💖 2/? 🍰-sss
i really like animation movies as well, but recently i've been loving horror and science fiction movies a lot! even though they might no be that scary, i love classics like halloween or alien. i think you're right lmao, jun'd probably love animation/disney/ghibli movies. thanks to him i discovered Hotarubi no Mori e or Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light in english, i highly recommend it😭 we share that, i suck at videogames but i love watching how people play, its like a movie(? 3/4 🍰-sss
(idk if you got any ask twice, but tumblr wasn't working propely) oh! what are your cats names? and do you associate with svt members? jskdfs i associate mine with seungkwan bc she's hella loud and gives the best hugs :( btw, how is your saturday going so far? 4/4 🍰-sss
ah but that’s a normal thing you know, we’re not perfect and we make mistakes!!! but i myself can’t type too so i fully understand you lmao it’s way worse in my native language than it is in english though 🤔🤔 i think i tend to pay more attention to things when i’m typing in other language lmao but anyway
i can find the major basically anywhere, but this is the least expensive place 😔😔 bc i’m not smart enough to go to a public school, also i don’t exactly do ~college~ it’s a 2 year course that’s way more practical but the degree works just like a college one. but my school is actually pretty great in education, it seems, they have really high grades in the ministry of education (my course has a 4 out of 5, and others have 5 out of 5) but some of my classes are pretty horrible too ksjndkj but oh well what dont we do to have a good job right
i’m basically in the areas of design and technology right, so i’m studying ux/ui design, front end development, some other programming languages and i’ve also been learning drawing fundamentals, so i can go to illustration/animation. I BASICALLY WANNA DO EVERYTHING RELATED TO THESE AREAS LMAO i recently bought a game development course, so i’m gonna start that too!! drawing, illustration, animation, gaming, design, programming, 3d modeling, app development, idkkkk i love learning stuff and doing stuff but actually ~studying~ is a pain in the ass lmao ALSO THANK U FOR LIKING MY CONTENTTTTT, as a graphic designer i feel like i never do enough of ~design~ here on tumblr lmao like my gfx (the few i’ve done) are rlly basic but oh well
but ahhhh yeah you’re completely right!! it’s way better to start early so that when winter comes you already have something to wear 🤗🤗
YESSSS, you know my DREAM is for wonhui to go to a cat café and just be really happy playing with cats 😩😩 i’d pass out from so much cuteness!!!!!! i think most of svt are dog people though 🤔🤔 i mean they do like cats but they just prefer dogs?? either way they can ALL go to a cat café just so i can die happy!!
well i’m GLAD to have opened ur eyes for royalty!jun bc it’s what he deserves!!! i’ll scream about it anytime honestly, esp if the matching color is purple lmao
and yessss, miracles in december is really THAT song right?? but i do like most of exo ballads just bc i’m bbh’s bitch and his + ksoo’s voice = everything to me. except for a few like baby don’t cry that i absolutely HATE, i tend to enjoy most of them! i think exo, svt and day6 are the only groups that can make me enjoy ballads even if it’s not all of them lmao otherwise i’ll always prefer the funkier songs
oh oh oh, i love science fictions too!! and i love halloween!! AND LOVE HOTARUBI NO MORI E, dude i’m really into animes u know and one of my fave things about svt is that they’re all weebs too lmao so when jun said he wanted to cosplay gin i SCREAMED, i was so happyyyyyy, i love that anime, i love gin and i hate pledis for never allowing jun to cosplay 😡😡😡😡
also yeah! i find ppl playing games so interesting honestly jdkakjd depends on the people and the game though, i used to love cryaotic and all the deep story games he played but now i can’t concentrate anymore 😔😔 bc like i said i have the attention spam of a 5 year old lmao so i need to keep myself entertained, so i usually watch idk pubg streams or something bc they have more action
and i have a good weekend!! i literally did NOTHING besides sleeping so it was all good lmao tomorrow i’ll go back to doing something with my life though (at least i plan on doing so), but what about yours??
