Hesina Willshaper AU
Step one canon divergence: Amaram's army doesn't do the kind thing. Kaladin's listed next of kin are sent a letter stiffly informing them that their son is a deserter and, thanks to the highmarshall's mercy, has been sold into slavery.
Step two canon divergence: a light spren has started following Hesina around.
The letter reaches hearthstone.
Hesina cries the bones of the first ideal through labor pangs. Their wretched diamond lamp grows slightly dimmer during childbirth.
Hesina and Lirin discuss if there's anyway they could possibly find their son and pay his slave debt. They're not optimistic.
Hesina talks with her lightspren.
Lirin and Hesina talk again about trying to find their son, now that Oroden is starting to be weaned.
Hesina appears to have grown taller. No one but the two of them seem to be aware but they're worried other future changes might be more noticeable.
Hesina and Lirin realize that she can mold rock as if it was clay with stormlight. A spark of hope for freeing their son emerges.
The two leave town.
They find a slave market in the nearest city. They see other parent's sons, but not their own.
Hesina swears to free those in bondage. Stormlight starts coming easier.
They make a tunnel. Rebellion follows. Lirin is horrified by the violence (the violence is not actually that bad all things considered. a couple guards dead. some bystanders frightened. Fair amount of property damage as they rob the military barracks food supply, steal every sphere that's not nailed down. and also steal the spheres that are nailed down. (Lirin won't admit it but the stealing from lamps part is kindof fun.)).
Many of those they freed flee. Some return to slavery willingly, scared of retribution. Many decide to follow the Radiant woman who has vowed to see others like them freed.
The group proceed to the next town. They find another slave market. They make a tunnel. There is more resistance than last time, clearly they were warned something might happened. Hesina kills a man.
Lirin is terrified by what his wife is becoming.
Hesina swears to shelter those without homes. The lightspren forms an unbreakable hammer, perfect for knocking crem free from buildings. And for knocking down men.
A now larger motley group seeks shelter in a mountain town razed in one of Alethkar's many skirmishes over the last decades. Hesina builds homes. Lirin begs her to stay here, to stop fighting before she goes to far down this path, not to go to war. The slaves they've freed are split, many wanting to stay, hide, some wanting to fight and free more, with a radiant at their head, there's a real chance to change things. Hesina lingers, practicing, spends some time falling in and out of shadesmar.
Lirin and Hesina separate.
Lirin stays with Oroden and the noncombatants. Hesina leads those who want to fight to another city, still trying to find their son, still trying to free everyone's children.
The town settles into a routine. Hesina and Lirin miss one another. This is the first time they've gone longer than two days without seeing each other in the last 25 years, and the two days was only when Lirin had to travel to where someone had overturned a cart on the road nearby and Hesina had to stay and watch the children, too young to travel. besides that, it had been every day. they keep turning to talk to each other.
While the army is gone, the free town is attacked by those trying to reclaim her property.
Hesina swims deliberately through shadesmar for the first time. reaches lirin just in time.
Lirin accepts that not fighting won't stop the violence. (It breaks him just a little bit)
Hesina shouts that one person's freedom ends where another's begins. She vows to fight against powers which would rather see their people in cages then homes. A thousand light spren rise up to grant her strength.
(yes I know she's moving fast through the oaths. but she's always been a thoughtful woman and she raised two children who asked difficult questions and now shes mother to another several hundred. honestly she had already worked through some of these concepts before they became actionable on such a grand scale.)
Lirin vows to support his wife through whatever trials the Almighty seems inclined to put her through.
The lightspren, who has started to get some memories back, remembers Oathgate Spren not terribly far from here by physical realm measurements, guarding a hidden human city
the stone remembers the way the radiants once traveled.
The path to a kingdom in the sky is slow — there are many cages to break on the way.
Kaladin doesn't know it right away, because people weren't exactly telling slaves about the freedom riots, but slave wagons start having harder and harder times reaching the shattered planes after him.
Someone mocks Lirin for having a wife so determined to pursue the masculine art of war. Lirin gets pissy and decides to show them by learning to read and write to help support the administrative side of his wife's kingdom wide asskicking.
The highprinces lead a fairly successful misinformation campaign about the slave riots, lots of accusations of rampant violence, the dregs of society lashing out, you can probably imagine
The ongoing rebellion is large enough that word trickles to the bridge crews, encouraging bridge four's hope for escaping, while also making it substantially more daunting, as the crews are even better guarded than canon.
Rumors of a female radiant swirl around. Most people assume it's a woman in shardplate with some sort of tunneling fabrial, which is still pretty crazy, but several major players Take Note
A very large and tired huddled mass of people reach Urithiru. there's just enough squires, and two new willshapers with their own oaths, to make tunnels through the shattered planes and reach the oathgate without being seen by the alethi armies
the parshendi army is another story, but some are willing to take a chance listening to the neshua kadal, and come with them.
The political implications of Dalinar freeing 1000 slaves is slightly more complex, especially considering the rebellions have been impacting Sadeas the hardest
About a week after being freed, Kaladin hires a spanreed intermediary to write home and find out if his hometown is alright (again, a lot of misinformation and rumors about the violence of the riots)
Is informed by Laral that his family left town looking for him shortly before the riots started, were presumed dead
Kaladin is under the impression that 1) his parents are dead because of him 2) the Rebellion is not the righteous fallback plan that he and the men were hoping it was.
Hesina has many reasons to go to the shattered planes. Nearest part of the trade network for food and necessary goods. Many slaves to be freed from there, and a part of her still hopes to find her son, even thought its been so long. Home of Alethkar's political leaders, the source of Alethkar's slavery.
I have spent. A LOT of time imagining many possible reunions between kaladin and his mom in my highly specific high oath hesenia au. She has a couple faces she could wear when visiting the planes. Brightlady. Radiant. Cagebreaker. Queen of Urithiru (not her real title, they're tentatively trying the Listener council model, but they know what the Alethi will understand). Even darkeyed mother, if she and Lirin approach slowly from a different direction. Honestly, pleased as I am with all of the above, a lot is flexible, the key here is kaladin going "MOM??" In some fashion
Thank you @sorchasolas for conversation and the urithiru ideas and for leading me to actually write all this down <3

loved one that came back but came back wrong, but it’s literally lirin and kaladin someone call me an ambulance
kaladin coming back to hearthstone and lirin knowing the man that comes back has his face and his voice and his mannerisms, but the man that came back wasn’t really lirins son. kaladin grew up while in the army. he learned how to shave and how to gamble and probably had his first sip of alcohol. he had his first girlfriend and he saved lives and he watched friends die, all before he was 19 years old. he grew those callouses that lirin thought he so desperately needed.
so no, the man that came back wasn’t really lirins son, it was someone with his face. because how do you rebuild that relationship when you’ve grieved his and tiens deaths, and you’re now grieving his life and the choices your son made for You. he went to the army to watch over his brother for You, because he promised to keep him safe, even though you begged him not to go. losing both sons is infinitely worse than losing one, and even though kaladin came back, lirin is still grieving the little boys he lost to war and the son that kaladin could have been if he never left.
and like. lirin is a surgeon, not a therapist. he can’t fix kaladins depression or suicidal thoughts (things that got infinitely worse after years in the army) and it sucks to have to watch your kid be someone whose morals you disagree with, while knowing it could have been so much different if he’d never left. and that now that he’s back, you can’t do anything to change him back to who he was. all lirin can do is be disappointed in kaladin because he’s already grieved him twice.

Kaladin asks: “Would you still love me if I was a cremling?”
“Would you still love me if I was a worm”  is a meme. But on Roshar, of course, they’d ask the question using cremlings, not worms. So let’s say that Kaladin asked his friends this very important question. How would they reply?
1. Adolin
Adolin: Sure, I don’t see why not!
Adolin: Can I give you a tiny, cremling-sized sword?
Adolin: It’d be pretty cute!
2. Renarin
Renarin: [considering]
Renarin: Yes, I believe so.
Renarin: So long as I knew it was you, I don’t see why my view of you would change.
Adolin: ...now I feel a little bad about my flippant cremling-sword answer.
Renarin: Nah, that would be cute.
3. Shallan
Shallan: Oooh, so you’d be a cremling with human intelligence?
Shallan: I could make you a shalebark habitat, and then have you describe the symbiotic relationship from the cremling perspective!
Shallan: Plus, you could tell me about what tastes good, whether you feel artistic...
Kaladin: I’m not sure I like the glint in your eye...
Shallan: I might love you more.
4. Moash
Moash: “Just a cremling” they’d say. “We can definitely kill him now.”
Moash: But no.
Moash: I know you’d still be unkillable.
Moash: You’d be the most overpowered radiant cremling ever.
Kaladin: Is that a yes, or...?
5. Teft
Teft: Of course, lad.
Teft: Shouldn’t be too hard to find some way for me to become a cremling too.
Kaladin: Uh...you don’t need to be a cremling in this thought experiment.
Teft: I’m your lieutenant, aren’t I?
6. Zahel
Zahel: No.
Zahel: Toss you out. Let nature take its course.
Kaladin: You, uh, know it’s still me, right? Just in cremling-shape?
Zahel: I’m sure you’ll figure it out.
7. Rlain
Rlain: Hmmm....yes.
Rlain: In fact, I think I would love you more.
Rlain: You’d finally have a shell!
8. Navani & Dalinar
Navani: Of course we would. I’ll even make you a little glyph board to crawl over to tell me all of your cremling thoughts.
Navani: Perhaps you could write the first book from the cremling perspective.
Navani: Men write now, so all bets are off.
Dalinar: But you are not allowed to call your book The Way of Cremlings. I will not allow it.
Navani: Dalinar, please! The man’s a cremling!
Kaladin: ...I feel like you guys might be making fun of me.
9. Lirin & Hesina
Hesina: You know I would, Kaladin.
Hesina: I’d give you a nice cremling habitat with a nice high rock for you to sit on.
Kaladin: Thanks, mom.
Lirin: At the very least, you’d take care of wounded cremlings, right?
Kaladin: D-Dad?!
Lirin: Gotta do something with your cremling life.
10. Lewshi
Lewshi: I would continue to respect you as a warrior.
Lewshi: However, I do not think we could duel anymore.
Kaladin: You don’t think?
Lewshi: Well, I know not to make assumptions when it comes to you.
11. Rock
Rock: ...
Rock: Tell me this. Are you the delicious type of cremling?
Kaladin: Y-You’d eat me?!
Rock: ...
Rock: Think of the fine stew!
Kaladin: NO
12. Syl
Syl: ...
Syl: ...
Syl: ...
Kaladin: Uh, are you okay, Syl?
Syl: (whispering) Tiny, glowing cremling with a sword!
Syl: S-So cute!
Adolin: That’s what I was saying!
Kaladin: ...
Kaladin: Why did I think this was a good idea?

This is not gonna be eloquent, but do you guys ever think about how much Lirin simply existing in the narrative changes the whole perspective of the story?? Like we can assume that there are people Roshar who hold the same beliefs as Lirin (closest main character I can think of is maybe Rlain??? And Hesina obv), but he’s not just some guy in the world; he is one of our main protagonist’s father!!! And- when he is not around- the main characters (though certainly not the narrative itself) have pretty much all normalized the war and their culture of violence. It especially hits for me bc Kaladin is so entrenched in it when we meet him and then we meet Lirin LATER and it changes everything!!! It changes your expectations for both Kaladin and characters in the world (specifically alethkar, but also much of the world we are primarily introduced to) in general.
Like the whole story repeatedly lands at the conclusion of ‘this culture is destroying the individual and it is destroying everything around it’ and yet every (human) in the story you are rooting for is fighting to uphold it (no time for more nuance on this sorry) except for this one guy who is adamantly not. I’m not saying he is correct, but I am thinking about how as a reader you adjust your expectations of character’s morals and ideas based on the context you are given and he changes the context!!!! And he’s Kaladins Dad!!! Idk idk I wish I was articulate

I'm thinking about Lirin again
"Unless it's a long con of some sort," Lirin said, his eyes narrowing. Rlain hummed to Reconciliation. "I'm surprised to hear of your suspicion. Kaladin said you always saw the the best in people." "My son doesn't know me nearly as well as he presumes," Lirin said. RoW, Chapter 79 Open Wound
Ok so this really got me thinking that Lirin has not shared a major part of his history with Kaladin.
What we know: he was trained in medicine but not in Kharbranth, and his specialty is surgery.
We don't have a date for Lirin's birth but we do for Hesina, which is around 1133. That makes her 13 years younger than Dalinar, who was born around 1120. I'm going to assume that Lirin is closer to Hesina's age.
The Unification War began in 1139, which meant both Hesina and Lirin grew up with news of war across Alethkar and the would-be king intending to rule it. By 1145, when Hesina would've been around 12, Gavilar was crowned King of Alethkar.
In 1150, when Hesina was 17, she married Lirin. One year later, Dalinar began his military campaign against Herdaz. Assuming that they settled in Hearthstone after they got married, that puts them both very close to the fighting.
Hearthstone is very close to the Herdazian border, so Sadeas soldiers probably would've joined with the Kholin army to fight. It was a border war, and Lirin might've lived near the border.
Anyway, my guess is that Lirin previously served as a field surgeon or medic in Sadeas' army during the Herdazian border war. Where other soldiers would've been fighting for honour, Lirin might've joined to save his home.
That was prime Blackthorn days, too. I wonder if Lirin ever saw him fight, or if he ever tried to stitch up the people Dalinar had crushed in his wake. No wonder Lirin doesn't salute him, even after he's king.
There's a lot of speculation here, but at the very least it might point us in a fun direction or make a good fanfic for someone.
(thanks again to Jofwu for his incredible Stormlight Archive Timeline, which I refer to on a regular basis)

Adolin and Kaladin catching up at the end of RoW:
Kaladin: so anyways one of the first plans I had was to jump off the tower-
Adolin: you WHAT
Kaladin: So I could regain my powers on the way down and then go warn Dalinar.
Adolin: oh... That's not such a bad idea...
Kaladin: Yeah, but I realized I couldn't abandon Navani and the sleeping radiants, so I thought about jumping off the tower and throwing them with me-
Adolin: WHAT'S THE MATTER-
Kaladin -SO they could wake up, regain their powers and fly off.
Adolin: oh... That could've just worked...
Kaladin: But in the end they threw Lirin off the tower and I ended up jumping after him.
Adolin: oh so you jumped so you would regain your powers on the way down and save him, right?
Kaladin: ...
Adolin: YOU JUMPED AFTER HIM TO SAVE BOTH OF YOU, RIGHT?
Kaladin: ... yes?

hello esteemed tumblr user moash. do you have thoughts on lirin and his disapproval of kaladin (until the end of row)? or lirin's character in general? you always have good character thoughts and im thinking abt lirin's line "i obey the person who holds the sword to my throat, same as i always have" bc it slaps
hiiiii i think lirin’s pacifism is potentially really interesting but kind of butchered in row. he’s made to seem almost ridiculous for his completely reasonable views. like the scene where kaladin kills the singer in the clinic i feel like most people felt lirin was being unreasonable, but i think if they imagined instead of a singer it was a human, it would feel way different. it’s actually pretty amazing that lirin readily accepts singer’s humanity much quicker than any other character! imagine you spent your early career operating on victims of the blackthorn’s conquest sorry “unification” of alethkar and then the son you raised to be a healer ended up killing, for the blackthorn, in your sanctuary. i’d be pretty distraught too. this isn’t to say i think lirin is right and kaladin is wrong, but i think lirin’s views weren’t well represented in row and he was made to look more in the wrong than he was.
i think this is maybe not a common occurrence, but it’s definitely a trap that sanderson has fallen into before that character will sort of lose their characterization in favor of fulfilling a role opposite the leads that they don’t necessarily fit. lirin in wok would not say “i obey the person who holds the sword at my throat.” that man stole from the brightlord and lied about it for years, enduring hellish conditions for him and his family to give kaladin a better future. just because he was a pacifist didn’t mean he was passive or submissive. not like a rebel either, but i feel like his character shifted significantly in row to suit the role of a passive submissive character opposite kaladin’s rebellion and action. i think this happened with sadeas in words of radiance too. in way of kings he had legitimate reasons for his betrayal of dalinar, he truly believed he was doing the right thing for alethkar, and i think even dalinar acknowledges this is the alethi way. but in wor he shifts entirely into being a villain for villainy’s sake. none of his moves are for the good of alethkar anymore, and he admits to adolin that he will continue to work against dalinar and the united alethkar if he is left alive. like that’s not really the same guy, he’s just filed down to fill a role. i think both of these characters could have filled those roles and kept consistent characterization with a little more creativity and effort, i find it just kind of lazy the way it ended up being written.
i feel like i got off course, the tldr is i like lirin a lot, especially in wok, but i feel like his character is flattened in row in a way that makes his ideals look ridiculous. which is a shame because you’re right that that line could go hard in a better context imo!! but i felt sort of letdown by his row appearances

For the ask game: Confirmed/"On screen" Shakadolin
1. Wait times at Lirin's clinic go way down after they go public with their relationship.
2. Bridge Four give Shallan and Adolin the "if you hurt him they will never find your body" speech; they are both actually a little intimidated
3. Adolin is really nervous about how people will react, but literally no one pays attention because they're too busy starting literal riots over Renarin and Rlain
4. One day Navani is like "here, you'll never have to worry about choosing a gift again" and gives Adolin an unsettlingly detailed list of Kaladin's likes and dislikes
5. Shallan comes up with increasingly saccharine pet names for Kaladin because his reactions are really funny

Lirin's naming was 100% one of those group naming things again.
I bet this is how it went:
Eithan: You should call it Eithan
Yerin and Lindon, simultaneously: Absolutely not.
Ziel: Child one
Lindon: ??? NO!
Mercy: Sunny!
Yerin: Cute, but no.
[A bunch of shitty recommendations]
Lindon: ...How about. Lirin.
Yerin: Yeah that's nice.
Eithan: I still think it should be Eithan.
Dross: Well, I still think it should be Terminator.
Mercy: ...It's okay. I still prefer Sunny.
Ziel: Did... did you just mash yours and Yerin's names together

“The children of the men and women whose lives we save,” Lirin said evenly, meeting Kal’s gaze. “That’s who tell stories of surgeons.”
File under "passages that hit different when your father had lifesaving reconstructive surgery after an accident several years before you were born."
My family does tell that story all the time, and I'm glad my dad and I are here.

Hey haru! ♡ Can I request fluff prompt #19 and #31 with C.Yeonjun? Thank you ❣️
hi Lirin, its nice to hear from you:)...
'how did i get so lucky...?' c.yj
Tumblr media Tumblr media
warnings - a little bit suggestive, cursing, angsty
genre - fluff, suggestive, skater!yeonjun x skater!reader, #19 “If you don’t stop looking at my lips without doing anything about it, I will take you right here on this counter.” + “Don’t look at me like that and then feign innocence.”
Tumblr media
sorry this took so long lol. idk if this is what you wanted but i had an idea and i remembered this request and took my chance...
everytime yeonjun came home, you knew there was going to be blood. he always came home with a cut, or a bruise caused by one of the most important things in his life. skating.
he would go out a few days a week for 3 to 5 hours with his friends or just by himself. sometimes even with you. it was always the same conclusion though. you always scold him about it, saying, 'you need to be more careful' or 'you're gonna kill yourself someday'. which he would always reply with a chuckle.
but to tell you the truth, that was in a way something you could always look forward to in your day. the love of your life coming home and letting you clean him up, something that he wouldn't let anyone else do.
it felt selfish, or even mean to you, but you know in your heart that yeonjun would always come home to you. it was around 5 o'clock when you heard the lock on the front door turn. you ran from your room to the entrance to your home to see your boyfriend smiling at you, with a bloody nose.
you lightly chuckled as you walked towards him with your arms open wide. he met you halfway and captured you in a big hug like he always does every time he comes home.
'welcome home'
you say, your face buried in his chest as his hand caresses your head softly and caringly.
'i really missed you today.'
'i missed you too. now c'mere lets get you cleaned up.'
you say waving him over to the kitchen counter. you grab the first aid kit from the bottom cabinet and open it to get the cotton balls. you walk back over to him, who is leaning against the counter. you stand next to him as you get everything you need.
abruptly you feel a tall figure standing over you. hands suddenly come to the counter top to trap you in his arms. you turn around to see your boyfriends never ending smirk.
heat suddenly comes up to your ears as he comes closer and closer to you. your eyes flick down to his lips again and then going back up to his eyes. as he stays in that position your eyes keep landing on the same spot.
'If you don’t stop looking at my lips without doing anything about it, I will take you right here on this counter.'
his comment takes you by surprise and a similar smirk rises to your lips.
'i have no idea what youre talking about.'
you say your gaze gets more confident and intimidating. he gives you a warning side eye before saying,
'Don’t look at me like that and then feign innocence.'
you giggled at his sassy comeback and your usual giggly look comes back to your face. he smiles more if that's even possible. but in the presence of your lover, it's impossible for it to stop.
he leans down and pecks your lips so softly you barely even feel it. just as he is leaning back you once again put your arms around his neck and pull him in for a deep kiss.
'how did i get so lucky...?'

Okay yeah maybe Kaladin’s parents have a healthy relationship with each other but Kaladin and Lirin have a horrible relationship and he’s a ridiculously toxic father and just generally a horrible person when it comes to actually you know, treating his son with even the slightest bit of love and respect, which he’s utterly incapable of doing
You know I’m going to have to disagree with you here. This doesn’t seem like the type of reaction that someone would give to their son believed to be dead if they hated him and were incapable of treating him with love and respect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to mention Lirin was the sole surgeon of Hearthstone. That takes a large mental toll on a person. And I think Lirin is very similar to many a man in any small farming community and doesn’t know how to show his love outwardly often. (Sources: my mom works ER as a nurse and it’s a hassle somedays. And also living in a small agricultural community of under 8k people all my life)
And so no. Lirin is not the perfect father. He’s got flaws. But so does Dalinar. Nobody ever talks about how Dalinar was a horrible father for Adolin and Renarin when they were children. Lirin wants to see the best for Kaladin and in his eyes it’s not being a radiant. But that’s because he didn’t see the changes that Kaladin went through while he was away. To Lirin it was sons go off to war -> one dies -> the other dies -> a year after the sons back from the dead -> he’s got slave brands -> he’s a shardbearer? -> he’s a radiant!
But we got to see the characters development and we get to see the struggles Kaladin goes through. While again Lirin doesn’t because he’s not omniscient. Does he not 100% agree with what Kaladin does? Yes. But do your parents 100% agree with what you’re doing? I’m going to guess probably not.

So what is it about Kal that draws an Ashspren in your Dustbringer!Kal au? And is Syl still interested in Kaladin or is his character not as much about protecting?
Tumblr media
you and @theknightartorias are sooooo fricking nice to me…..
to answer your question, which i do end up getting to but to answer it first: truly, i do think he attracts an ashspren because he chose to logic himself through the pain of killing elhokar. i think that if he ignores his heart and his honor and solely relies on his self-discipline, that would attract an ashspren. dustbringers’ ideals are about self-mastery, and what’s more disciplined than a man who doesn’t want to kill the king, making himself do it anyway because it’s what he said he would do?
i think syl definitely ends up leaving him. i’m not sure if double-ordering is possible, but i think combustion (kaladin’s ashspren) and syl would kill each other first. i do think that this au transforms and kills kaladin from the inside-out, so his character can no longer be about protecting, lest he make himself completely and utterly miserable. thank you!!!!!! i already have a ramble written so im going to post it belowwwww
so the idea comes from the idea that kaladin does in fact kill the king with moash in wor and just obliterates the honor that syl thinks he should have but doesn’t necessarily contradict his oaths so it doesn’t kill her but she does leave (see: breaking moash’s promise didn’t kill her, even though he swore to him too) also because i can’t think about her dying. and this au isn’t about anyone else i don’t want to think about what would happen to dalinar and adolin in wor!!!!!! they’re saved through Plot
anyway so syl leaves and kaladin is left still broken and open for a nahel bond, one might say even more broken than before, and an ashspren swoops in and is ready to bond with kaladin stormblessed. i’m thinking it happens pretty fast, so he goes from windrunner to burgeoning dustbringer within a couple of days.
his ashspren is named Combustion but i’ve been considering changing it to Ignition too. and combustion’s kind of all over the place, see: (i just wanted it to be relating to points of an explosion, see the only other named ashspren we know of being named Spark)
“Where are we going next? I want to blow something up,” Combustion says. “Your guy has the right idea. I wish I was there when you killed him!”
ok this is long so im putting it below a cut here
i made up the au because i wanted an idea of what would happen to kaladin if he did go ahead and kill the king and go be with moash and do it for moash but the more i think about it the more it becomes a study in how antithetical this would be to their canon dynamic. yes, kaladin let moash have his vengeance and helped him accomplish it, and it literally destroys him inside and out. it annihilates his honor, his “becoming one with the wind” motifs, and makes him an outcast to a service he’s spent the last five years cultivating. in one moment, he’s the head of the king’s guard, in the next, he’s a traitor to the whole kingdom.
this kind of fundamentally destroys kaladin’s deity status not only to bridge four and the kholin princedom, but also to moash, who has to watch kaladin crash and burn in front of him. he comes back from the dust reborn, but something entirely different. he also never reaches third ideal with syl, and has to start from the ground up with entirely new ideals as a dustbringer. no longer are his ideals about protection, essential to his core beliefs, but about self-mastery, which is more important to the decision he made about killing the king.
yes, he could have tried to protect everyone and stayed a windrunner. but he chose not to, chose to define himself as someone who is only ruled by his discipline and not his heart, and became a dustbringer. (it is also partly why i think moash could never be a dustbringer but WHATEVER that’s another post) (kind of also an interesting take on lirin’s “you have to choose when to care,” yeah?)
i don’t know how this would affect moash’s promotion to vyre. but i do think that kaladin still hates the fused because kaladin is, at his heart, an alethi soldier. i think he’d refuse their rule to moash’s dismay. i don’t know if moash would leave kaladin behind to become vyre (and people are welcome to add their thoughts on this post) because kaladin is too cemented in his ways to change, or whether he’d refuse to become vyre to stay with kaladin. especially now that kaladin hasn’t emotionally and physically abandoned moash and chosen the monarchy over his best friend (and loverrrr)
a bit of writing
It was one thing to feel so much pride for him [from how he treated] the lighteyes, the people who had wronged them so unmistakably, but [Kaladin’s] getting the same way about the Fused. Bucking up to them to deny their authority; outwardly helping the listeners they beat and staring down Fused and Regals who dare to try to disturb him. And Kaladin’s Ashpren doesn’t help. Combustion just riles him up further, egging him on to cause a disturbance.
the timeline of events with dustbringer kaladin i think is something similar to:
kills the king -> bonds combustion -> stays with moash in kholinar for a while with both of them trying to hide kaladin being a radiant -> something happens in kholinar. either moash kills jezrien around the time and is accepted to become vyre, the gang sees dustbringer kaladin…. i’m not sure yet! im kind of desperate to write it, but dustbringer kaladin is so opposite of windrunner kaladin that it’s like transformative to the point of destruction, which seems… right, for a dustbringer.
i love the idea that if moash does become vyre (see: moash still having to take responsibility for the king and also possibly crushing kaladin’s one point of unequivocal joy, now marred forever) kaladin still tries to help the radiants and the kholins but like, behind the scenes as much as possible. because how are you supposed to say sorry i killed elhokar and then ran away, i still love you all so much without sounding like you’re completely delusional? i also think that this destroys the line in the sand of kaladin and the wretch, to a secret third thing: someone who is capable of great terrible things and knows the cost of them. what’s that mary shelley quote? “I have love in me the likes of which you can scarcely imagine and rage the likes of which you would not believe. If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other.”
i think being a dustbringer would completely alter kaladin like, forever. permanently. i think the point of no return is the second he kills elhokar. i think he knows that he’s a new kind of alone when he loses syl. even when he gains combustion, i think there’s no coming back from that. i think that destroys him.
i think too that once he’s a dustbringer, unless double-ordering as both windrunner and dustbringer was possible (maybe for him cuz he’s Special) he could never go back to being a windrunner. even if he could feel syl. even if he she would want him back and could forgive him because i do not think he could kill combustion or break his oaths with him. i do not think he could do it twice.
anyways i love him and have put much much thought into it and at this point dustbringer kaladin is like my oc basically but THANK YOU FOR ASKING !!!!!!!! he’s so great and miserable and i love putting my barbies under hydraulic presses made of pure stress and agony. kaladin i love you. anyway yeah. i want to write it so bad. i’ll finally have a reason to use one of my favorite titles i made up a while ago

Shallan & Adolin play "Fuck, Marry, Kill" (And also Kaladin is there)
Not gonna lie, I could see Adolin & Shallan playing FMK if it, you know, existed. Meanwhile, Kaladin is NOT playing but he sure is unwillingly at the same table in the bar. By thew way, I'll be picking Stormlight characters using my random number generator for this!
1. Teft, Skar, Mraize
Shallan: Well, I'm obviously killing Mraize, marrying Teft, and fucking Skar. Adolin: Yes...definitely killing Mraize. But I think I'm marrying Skar and fucking Teft, not gonna lie. Shallan: Kaladin what about you? Kaladin: I-I told you I'm not playing!
2. Taravangian, Sadeas, Veil
Adolin: ... Adolin: I mean...do I even have to say it? Adolin: Kill Sadeas, obviously, and I guess I marry Veil. Uh... Shallan: So...one hot night with Taravangian then? Kaladin: W-Why are you guys even playing this??
3. Raboniel, Moash, Elhokar
Shallan: Fuck Raboniel, kill Moash, marry Elhokar. Adolin: I can't fuck or marry my cousin, so uh... Adolin: I guess I'm...fucking Moash and marrying Raboniel? Adolin: Not feeling great about this one, I gotta be honest. Shallan: Definitely worked out better for me. Kaladin: I have trauma???
4. Cord, Nale, Jasnah
Adolin: ...Maybe I'll start skipping the ones that contain my actual family members? Shallan: Oh man, killing Nale is easy, but... Shallan: Fuck Jasnah or marry Jasnah... Shallan: ... Kaladin: (Isn't she zoning out for a bit too long?) Adolin: Eh. Shallan: FUCK JASNAH AND MARRY CORD Shallan: Love Jasnah. Think I'd die if I married her. Shallan: Cord seems very stable and loving. Adolin: I support you and these choices. Kaladin: ...I have never understood you two.
5. Sigzil, Kaladin, Moash
Adolin & Shallan (simultaneously): Marry Kaladin. Adolin & Shallan (simultaneously): Fuck Sigzil. Adolin & Shallan (simultaneously): Kill Moash. Kaladin: DID YOU REHEARSE THAT?!
6. Shallan, Lirin, Szeth
Adolin: I get to marry Shallan! :D Adolin: I can't kill Kaladin's dad, so I guess I'm fucking him and then killing Szeth. Kaladin: (Is that better?) Shallan: Well I'm marrying Kaladin's dad--you can call me "Mom" now--and I can't marry him if I'm dead, so I guess I'm killing Szeth and fucking myself. Kaladin: (puts his head in his hands)
7. Amaram, Kadash, Sebarial
Kaladin: KILL AMARAM Kaladin: I'M NOT MARRYING A FUCKING HIGHPRINCE SO I GUESS I'M MARRYING KADASH Kaladin: WHICH MEANS A ONE NIGHT STAND WITH SEBARIAL APPARENTLY Shallan: ... Adolin: ... Kaladin: ... Shallan: W-We're so proud of you! Adolin: All of your choices are valid! Kaladin: CAN WE PLEASE JUST GET BACK TO DRINKING NOW
