Just thinking about the fact that every victor is supposed to be free of the games once they win, but not only will they never be free from the trauma, but they get thrown back every single year to mentor… to watch at least one of those kids die, to watch those kids go through the same horrors they did. To try and get these kids mentors and save their lives, roping them into the very game that they were trying to escape when they won. Part of me wonders if some of the mentors just let the kids die so they won’t have to just be another cog in the machine the way that they are now… they may be a victor but there’s really only one winner of the hunger games, and that’s the Capitol.

one of my favourite scenes from tbosas book was when Reaper had ripped the capitol flag off of the wall, and after he had made his little memorial he wrapped the flag around him like a cape and started running around ☹️ i really wish this was in the film because again it just shows how he, like the rest of them, were still kids, and no mask that they were forced to wear could hide that 💔

Coriolanus doesn't get poetry at all.

Poetry -- ballads -- is Lucy Gray's way of life. It's the way she observes the humans, the nature, and the world. Lucy Gray loves life and children and people and she shows her love in the form of poetry. To live is to love humankind, she thinks.

Coriolanus doesn't get it. Coriolanus doesn't get it at all. Coriolanus doesn't get poetry. Coriolanus doesn't get humans; the souls. He kills the last speck of soul he has that day and he lives the life of the dead ever since.

Until he sees the poetry in the form of Katniss Everdeen.

Katniss is a poetry. She is Coriolanus' body and Lucy Gray's soul. She is a threat -- and he loves it.

For the first time in decades, he feels alive again.

Again and again, he challenges her in the way he knows how to defeat himself, because she is him. But she is also her and so the Mockingjay wins in the end.

It fills him with joy. With delight. With love. With life. With poetry.

He tells her the truth that final day. He always tells her the truth. He always tells her the truth until the end. Because he didn't tell her the truth when it ended. So, Coriolanus observes gleefully. To see what he, she, they choose. And she chooses the right thing.

"Well done, Miss Everdeen!" He explodes in laughter. "Well done!"

He laughs and laughs and laughs more after, because...

"Well done, Lucy Gray, well done!"

Coriolanus loves.

I often feel the need to point out that Lucy Gray did not leave because Coriolanus was a killer…she literally brought that topic up in a moment of relief that there would be no more killing (hopefully) to achieve peace in their lives. She was upset because he lied, as there was ONE thing she held above love: trust. She wanted to trust him—wanted the truth—and he screwed it up out of fear of her reaction. She wrote and performed live a song for him about how much she loved him AFTER HE KILLED THE GIRL THAT HAD BEEN MAKING HER LIFE A LIVING HELL! And with her, Billy Taupe gone, too. She realized killing was necessary, for they were both survivors. Their downfall was the lie, and that’s what haunts me about their story—to think what could have been had he just admitted his faults to her.

I really like the idea that Lucy Gray and Snow are both a snake and a songbird. This also got me thinking about their connection to these animals and what that says about them. Especially regarding snakes.

Lucy Gray likes songbirds. She and the covey admire them, and almost see themselves as one of them. She is empathetic towards them, wishing for their freedom, as well as hers.

Lucy Gray also likes snakes. She is friends with one. She may not trust them entirely, but she is not afraid of them. She can even interact with venomous snakes, although we only see this with Gaul's mutts which wouldn't hurt her in the first place. The point is, she doesn't have anything against them. She accepts them as they are. And this is interesting because snakes are usually associated with evil, especially in the original trilogy. But they also have other connotations, such as transformation, rebirth, protection and healing.

Coriolanus hates songbirds. Well, he hates Mockingjays. And it's such a visceral hate that he wants them to dissapear, to kill them all as soon as possible. Even after admitting that they aren't particularly dangerous, he feels threatened by their existence. They weren't planned, they can't be controlled, and he doesn’t accept that. But even knowing this, he constantly associates them with the covey, and therefore with Lucy Gray.

Now, it's not clear how Coriolanus feels about snakes. He doesn’t like them as Lucy Gray or Gaul do, but he doesn’t hate them either. When he first sees the rainbow snakes, he doesn’t know if they scare him. Then Clemensia got bitten, which led him to question his trust in Gaul and the Capitol. Later, the same snakes would have killed Lucy Gray, if he hadn’t cheated. Lastly, he was bitten by a snake, which, contrary to his initial thoughts, wasn’t venomous. Whether it was planted by Lucy Gray or not, we’ll never know. He thinks she did, though. And that’s the thing, he assumes the worst. He thinks she’s a traitor and a manipulator, looking innocent only to attack when he least expects it. Because of this, he swears he’ll never leave his guard down again. He’ll strike first, every time. And for that, he uses venom.

So then, what can we get from this?

Snakes transformed Clemensia, both inside and outside. This affected Coryo too.

Coriolanus was reborn after being bitten by a snake. After all, he did say his old self was dead, lie or not.

Snakes never hurt Lucy Gray, even when they were designed to kill her. In fact, they protected her at times.

And, although venom can be used to heal, Snow chooses to use it as a weapon.
