Nouman Ali Khan, Mahira Khan Controversies
Nouman Ali Khan, a popular interpreter and preacher of Qur’anic teachings has within moments turned from the image of an idealized sweetheart to a malicious sexual predator. He is known and loved for his relatability to young adults and teenagers for seemingly navigating through real world conflicts ever so eloquently and gracefully. Although I personally haven’t seen many of his lectures, I knew that he battled through agnostic beliefs and reached his level of religiosity today by exercising a lot of self-reflection and putting in the time to understand and interpret the Qur’an thoroughly. This battle of navigating within the Western environment through an Islamic lens is a personal battle for many, and his experience and transparency hit the right tone for many of his followers. So to hear about such a scandal and perhaps a betrayal of his own teachings has been an enraging experience in a society where we continue to battle for our rights against sexual violence every single day.
A month ago I had heard of some vague rumours going around that Nouman Ali Khan had either cheated on his current wife and is looking to leave her for someone new, or is thinking about taking up a second wife. It was a discussion where many ladies got incredibly passionate about defending this behavior. Because the question was, “how could he do this???” It seemed as if his actions made my friends feel personally victimized and so they felt the need to justify their belief in him by justifying his actions. Although there were no articles or solid evidence of such behavior, just a word of mouth of a rumor became such an inflammatory topic within seconds. I think such an emotional response aroused for a few reasons:
Firstly, the Islamic religion itself is based on Qur’anic interpretation, and in the post 9/11 world that we live in today, it is something that seems to need constant apologies and defences for in order to exist. People are looking to point fingers at the ‘terrorist religion’ at any chances, so by nature it has become something we are armor ready to defend at any time. Secondly, Nouman Ali Khan has become more than an interpreter, he has become a preacher who now has millions of followers relying on his interpretations and knowledge for their own critical reflections. He has become a public icon for what a religious man should look like and how he should behave, and someone people agree with on many principles. Thirdly, this person who now represented one’s religion consequently represented one’s beliefs, and an attack on him felt like an attack on a person who people chose to trust very intimately. It felt like an attack on their own morality and who they chose to trust in.
Of course that was just the first of many rumors. Just recently there has been accusations from some of his students and peers that Nouman Ali Khan has ‘crossed the line’ with a few ladies, and in response to the accusations he has threatened to sue those who have hand in propagating this information. There is also a screenshot of a transaction which is supposed to be money Nouman Ali Khan used to bribe someone’s silence. All such claims have been denied by the man himself, but in rise of the screenshots he has said that they are fabricated and some taken out of context. What we know right now is that there are ladies accusing him of speaking to more than one person at a time in seeking a prospect of marriage, and his methods of it were not typically ‘halal’ and went against his own teachings. Nouman Ali Khan since then posted two statements defending his position and trying to preserve his line of work from damage.
I’m not here to defend or accuse, but it is interesting to see the rage and conflict that people are showing in response.
The tweet above is an obvious sarcasm towards how people absorb Nouman Ali Khan’s words, already mocking the students for following such a person.
Another person found the right time and platform to advocate for more female inclusion in what is a more male dominated discipline.
There were those who waited for Nouman Ali Khan’s response for defending the great person they have known Mr. Khan to be.
The great number of responses varied from blame to change, to defence and disappointment in him or in those who turned on him so quickly. People who jumped the bandwagon on this rumor and propagated it have been criticized for proliferating unproven litigations. And rightly so, it’s always important to note that a facebook post or chat screenshots can be fabricated, any story can be created from half the information. Given that, it is hard to believe that all those chat posts were fabricated seeing his private pictures in them, but again we don’t know the entire context of those conversations. There is a lot of ambiguity in what he is referring to and what the person he is speaking to is referring to. There are names being called on for situations we have no information on. Furthermore, there has been no actual claim of misconduct in a harmful way. To be clear, calling someone a sexual predator is itself an inflammatory terminology, and I was not the first to use it to describe the imagery represented, but there is no allegations of any physical or emotional abuse whatsoever.
The claims are that he had spoken to and flirted with multiple women at once, or at least 2 people at once. And in those romantic conversations he had not taken the permission of one of the girl’s father for such intimacy to occur, and apparently a sister is mad at him for trying to hold her hand while they were in the car. It’s confusing to me why this detail is creating such a havoc. Have we forgotten that although an idealized teacher of Islamic knowledge, he is still human? He admitted to having a difficult divorce and that he has been looking for a partnership again with someone, such a thing is traumatic and difficult for anyone especially at such an age. And yes, Islamically it is incorrect to hold a girls hand without marriage, but notice how he stopped himself and he didn’t do it! His personal conversations were his own, and to take a relationship to such levels takes two people’s participation not one. Given that, if there are further claims that I am unaware of then I am definitely critical of Nouman Ali Khan’s behavior, but from what is seen right now there is no actual reason for such uprage!
There had been a tweet that people should be as upset with Mr. Khan as they were with Mahira Khan for her ‘indecency’. Please let’s correct this, Mahira Khan is her own person with her own views and her own lifestyle. She doesn’t represent yours, she doesn’t represent your country’s, if anything she represents personal space and freedom to make her own choices. If you are going to get upset at her for smoking a cigarette then please lets firstly point fingers at how many men get away with smoking on the daily, so why is it so indecent for a girl to do so? If you’re talking about it being injurious to her health, yeah give her an advice, don’t shove it down her throat – but of course it is hypocritical if you don’t do so with every other person you know who smokes as well. And coming back to Nouman Ali Khan, let’s not all step one foot forward to tarnish a man who built an honest career, and lets not say oh we have double standards for girls we should have them for men too, please no!
Take the moment to think about it. What are you upset at Nouman Ali Khan for? Is it because he didn’t live up to your expectations, that he turned out to be human with err, or is it because you are upset for the victims who have yet to take any action and support their claim against him. I don’t by any way minimize the claims of a victim, but the allegations so far have been incredibly vague. Or is it your distrust in Islam and your first instinct to slander scholars and preachers and those who follow them, because that comes from a place of intolerance and ignorance, and please do not generalize your assumptions of Islam and its practice on random situations.
We have power in the words and the hashtags we put out for the world, and whether he comes out innocent or guilty, his career will always have this mark on it. Be upset, stand up for what is right, but also be critical and question who it is and what it is exactly that is upsetting you. If this is something close to your heart that you need information on, perhaps press on and show support to the victims to speak out further, don’t immediately blame a man who has had nothing but a history of positive messages.
And remember, we are all preachers of what we aim to be and what we think is right, but not all of us are a perfect in reaching our idealized selves, so why should he be held to such a standard?
Given that, if he had condemned something I did in one of his lectures and then did it himself, it would get me incredibly angry. Furthermore I'm aware his lectures speak to us like we are gravely wrong and sinners and we need to fix ourselves as soon as possible! But if anything, that strict tone would hit my own ego but his message is not wrong even though his actions may not have lived up to it.
