Artist Research
I've recently been watching a lot of the show 'Glow Up' on Netflix and have become intrigued by Val Garland.
In addition to being a judge on 'Glow Up', Garland is also the L'Oréal Paris global makeup artist and the British Vogue contributing beauty editor. She originally started as a hair dresser in Australia, colouring hair before she moved to makeup.

What more of an iconic start to remembering 2010 than that of Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress, designed by Franc Fernandez, and worn on none other than the red carpet of 2010's MTV VMA's.
The dress, tiny beret and bag were all made of Argentinian beef and were designed by Argentinian designer Franc Fernandez and styled by Nicola Formichetti. It was said to be inspired by Gaga's makeup artist, Val Garland, who apparently would wear meat dresses in the 70's to parties. Further inspiration may have come from Czech-Canadian artist Jana Sterbak's 1980's piece Vanitas: Flesh Dress for an Albino Anorectic. Sterbak's hand-sewn meat dress must be remade for every showing, and its gradual decomposition changes its meaning upon viewing.
The meat dress was worn by Gaga when she accepted her Video of the Year Award, for none other than Bad Romance. The dress was kept refrigerated during the night before Gaga accepted her award, and she was sewn into the dress backstage. Gaga became the first female artist to receive two nominations for the Video of the Year Award (Bad Romance and Telephone), and 2010's VMA's became the most viewed since the 2002 VMA's. Perhaps this can be attributed solely to Gaga's appearance, her meat dress drawing its fair share of controversy from the public. PETA issued a public statement drawing criticism of the outfit, and Ellen Degeneres expressed discomfort at sitting next to Gaga on The Degeneres Show, as Gaga continued to wear the dress for the post-VMA press photos and interviews.
The public was generally confused and baffled by the dress, and it was easy to cite it as none other than another one of her strange antics made only to gain public notoriety. However, Gaga said that the dress served more than just a hideous fashion statement. It represented her stance on the US military's discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which barred LGBTQIA+ individuals from serving in the military if they were open about their sexuality. Gaga's dress was a direct connection to her 2010 speech which urged the US Military to change its stance on queer American soldiers who wanted to serve in the army. In this speech, she referred to "equality as the prime rib of America," and said that she didn't "get to enjoy the greatest cut of meat that my country has to offer," because of the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. In 2016, the dress become a meal in a Chinese hot pot restaurant. The Beijing restaurant featured a blonde Barbie cladded in cuts of raw meat, ready to be cooked and eaten in the sizzling hot pot.
Today, Gaga's dress has become more than just a symbolic memory of the chaotic energy of 2010. The dress is permanently reserved in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the exhibition Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power. After the 2010 VMAs, the dress was taxidermied to become what is essentially beef jerky, so that it can live permanently in the museum.

A moment with:
Campbell Ritchie
Cam was lovely enough to let me ask her a few questions for this blog. I hope you guys enjoy.
------------------------------------------------
Q: How did you get your start in the Industry?
CR: Before I was a makeup artist I was a professional ballerina!! After a life changing injury I turned to makeup. I assisted the greats Kevyn Aucoin, François NARS, and Val Garland. This was my apprenticeship and they were my mentors
Q: Were there any obstacles you faced?
CR: Actually I have always been very blessed that the people whom taught me lead me to my career today. The only obstacle I’ve ever faced in life is jealously from others.
Q: What do you love the most about your job?
CR: Everyday is different, I could be on a film set, or a tv set, on tour with a musician, artist or band. Working on a celebrity or actress for a red carpet event to shooting the latest Victoria Secrets campaign.
Q: How does your process of creating a flattering look for a model look like?
CR: It all comes down to the creative director and client, it’s then my job to recreate the look that they want for that model.
Q: How do you pick which products and brands to work with?
CR: I only work with brands that are vegan, cruelty free, sustainable and have the same ethos as I do when it comes to the planet and animal cruelty.
Q: Who are your top 3 people to work with?
CR: I love actress Naomi Watts (fellow aussie)
(Supermodel/ VS girl) Jess Hart is my dear girlfriend and I’ve worked with her since she was 15.
And then my BFF Genevive Padalecki she is one of the kindest humans I know, is an incredible mother and wife, she calls me most days just to check in or with makeup and beauty questions. This women has rescued me in many a situation. She’s my ride or die, my sister.
Q: If you had the power to create a makeup line or product with absolutely no hindrance in the universe what would it be?
CR: Actually I would love to help large famous brands that we all know do better and be better!!
The industry is already overly saturated with cosmetics, it would be my dream to make these large commercial brands cleaner and greener, and animal friendly.
Q: How do you balance a busy career with me time and family time?
CR: Mediation is my go to! If I’m not grounded I can’t be of service to my family, or my clients.
It’s that whole put your oxygen mask on before helping others!!!
Q: Any tips?
Mediation, take time for you!
Q: How do you feel about the beauty standards created by Instagram?
CR: I think that Instagram has become very EGO based and Narcissistic, I always try to use my platform for the greater good, by be encouraging and to inspire, I think everyone is beautiful, and people don’t need makeup to make them beautiful. It should be a tool to enhance NOT cover up!!
Q: Any updates on your skincare line?
CR: Watch this space! With Covid my Earth day 2020 launch has been postponed!
Q: If you could pick a statement to be burned into the minds of everyone on this planet what would it be?
CR: Be yourself, do better be better, inspire, but most of all BE kind
Who else is as excited as me for the skincare line?
There you have it! Thanks again to @campbelletritchie for taking time out of her day to answer our questions 💓

WOW BLAST FROM THE PAST - MAKEUP I DID IN 2013. I was going through some old e mails today and came across this image, I am so pleased I did as it brought back some nice memeories from my early days in makeup. I thought this would be a nice image to show to inspire new artists to get out there and network to build your portfolio and business. Using @kryolanofficial I had only been in Edinburgh a short while and I was still pretty new to the makeup industry. I did not know anyone in Scotland, but I knew I had to get out there and network so I could build my portfolio and business. Nothing was stopping me, I had a fire in me to get out there. I met a local photographer and we met a handful of times and shot some creative makeup looks. This specific look was inspired by high fashion runway makeup. Inspiration was Val Garland looks as well as Pat McGrath. A few years into makeup I then started to create my own original looks, looks that had never been done before. Like my rise of the guardians animated film look. This took my makeup from strength to strength creating and practising my looks every single week. There was not a week that went by when I was not doing something with makeup. Always pushing myself to try new things and create new things. Trying new products, brushes, textures etc. This has to be done to be a successful makeup artist, you can not cut corners and expect to get the results you want. TEST TEST TEST, NETWORK YOUR ASS OFF, BE HUMBLE, WORK HARD, BE PROFESSIONAL ALWAYS. ABOVE ALL HAVE FUN WITH MAKEUP Image by John Need Sx #runway #runwaymakeup #highfashionmakeup #highfashion #catwalkmakeup #fashionmakeup #makeupartist #makeupartistscotland #beginnermakeupartist #makeupcourses #learnmakeup #onlinemakeupcourses #beginnermakeupcourses #dontcutcorners #network #meetpeople #pushyourself #behumble #workhard #buildyourbusiness #buildyourempire #makeupbusiness #freelancemakeupartist #beginnermakeuptutorial #dowhatisrightforyou #promakeupacademy #sarahbaldwinmakeupcourse #sarahbaldwinmakeup https://www.instagram.com/p/CON9CFIKiYO/?igshid=ei0it18eys1c

When it comes to the beauty industry, the subject can't be reduced to just YouTube videos or beauty tutorials, it is an industry of many outlets. The beauty industry has flourished in the last few decades, and now doesn't only include makeup, but special effects too, often with the lines between the two quite blurry. Streaming channels and production companies have picked up on this popular industry and have made some of the best shows that involve these two industries.
RELATED: 10 Reality Shows To Watch If You Love Survivor
Even though the below shows might not be strictly about either makeup or special effects, they show how they can be used creatively, and tell their amazing stories through the use of makeup, fashion, or special effects.
10 Face Off
Tumblr media
Originally released on The SyFy Channel, Face Off remains one of the best special effects/makeup artistry shows out there. Unfortunately, as of now, the show ended at 13 seasons, but the past seasons can keep fans entertained and fascinated for hours. Hosted by American actress McKenzie Westmore, she guides a group of skilled make-up artists through challenges where they compete for the top prize that includes a makeup contract and cash.
The contestants show their work to a panel of established judges in the hopes of being the top make-up artist that wins it all. The competitions involve concept designs, sculpting, and extensive makeup work that will make or break their chances.
9 Glow Up
Tumblr media
In 2019, a reality show named Glow Up was released, which highlights a group of skilled makeup artists vying for the winning spot. The top prize includes a contract assisting the world's top makeup artists, and a chance to prove themselves in the professional world.
Hosted by Stacey Dooley, the makeup artists go through grueling rounds of tasks where they have the chance to prove to the judges, Dominic Skinner and Val Garland, that they have what it takes in the makeup industry. So far, there are two seasons available on Netflix, and hopefully, there will be many more seasons to come.
8 Skin Wars
Tumblr media
From 2014 to 2016, Skin Wars was a top-notch show that explored skin painting, and the incredible talent that calls this skill their day job. Judged by an incredible panel of judges, including RuPaul, Craig Tracy, and Robin Slonina, Skin Wars is an hour-long competition that gives talented contestants the chance to show their skills in front of the world.
So far there are only three seasons, but judging on the fanbase, and binge-worthy episodes, hopefully, there are lots more to come.
7 America's Next Top Model
Tumblr media
One of the longest-running shows involving fashion and makeup, America's Next Top Model has been a show that inspires young models, makeup artists, and anyone interested in the fashion industry. Hosted by the iconic Tyra Banks and a panel of judges, America's Next Top Model is a show that gives young and hopeful models a chance to learn and prove their natural talent.
Throughout the show, the group of models goes through makeovers and challenging tasks for the opportunity to be the next top model in the industry. America's Next Top Model has been running since 2003 and has enough episodes that are binge-worthy. It has also given some recognizable A-listers a platform to become top models, actresses, and spokespeople to continue their careers.
6 GLOW
Tumblr media
Netflix has churned out a lot of amazing television shows in the last few years, and GLOW is definitely one of them. Even though GLOW isn't a reality show based on fashion or makeup, it definitely has the costuming and makeup effects that anyone in the industry will appreciate and enjoy. This show revolves around characters from the 1980s who are involved in professional wrestling.
Set in Los Angeles, viewers get a colorful look inside the world of female wrestling, and although GLOW, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, was a real wrestling business, the show is based on fictional events.
5 RuPaul's Drag Race
Tumblr media
If viewers haven't heard of RuPaul yet, they will become true fans of him when they watch RuPaul's Drag Race. Since 2009 and 171 episodes later, RuPaul has gained a huge following as he searches for America's next drag superstar, season after season. RuPaul is the most famous drag queen in the world, and as a host, mentor, and inspiration to his show, he gives drag queens the chance to live their dream, and a platform to transform themselves via makeup and fashion.
RELATED: RuPaul’s Drag Race: Every Ball Challenge, Ranked
Working with the drag queens are a panel of models, designers, and influencers. Each episode highlights the highs and lows of the glitz and glam of the industry and what it takes to be the next best drag queen. Since there have been several seasons, there are now documentaries featuring some of the queens that have been on the show.
4 The Walking Dead
Tumblr media
The Walking Dead is one of the longest-running shows on AMC, and it's not only because of the acting and storylines but due to the special effects, as well. Without a doubt, The Walking Dead has some of the best makeup when it comes to zombies, and any makeup artist will appreciate the show for this, even if they aren't fans of the genre.
Since 2010, some of the best makeup and special effects artists have worked hard at creating a show that is so loved by fans, as Rick and his group battle this post-apocalyptic world. However, although The Walking Dead will go down as one of the most-loved shows, it is unfortunately amongst one of the shows that will end in 2021 or 2022.
3 Euphoria
Tumblr media
Throughout the years, HBO has released many iconic television shows and characters, and in 2019, they did it again with Euphoria. Anyone who hasn't heard of this breakout show should get right on binging the first season before late-January, when the second season is set to release. This show doesn't necessarily focus on makeup, but it does make quite the impression.
RELATED: Is HBO's Euphoria Based On A True Story? And More Fun Facts About The Show
Even though the show focuses on Rue and her classmates, there is a subtle nod to the creative masterminds behind the show. From Rue to Jules, and to the rest of the female cast, the fashion and makeup are extremely well-done and original.
2 Larger Than Life: The Kevyn Aucoin Story
Tumblr media
Larger Than Life is not a reality show or television show, but an amazing documentary about one of the most pivotal makeup artists of his time, Kevyn Aucoin. Aucoin was an iconic makeup artist in the 1980s and 1990s and was the most in-demand makeup artist of his time. He worked with clients such as Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, and Janet Jackson.
Larger Than Life explores the life of Aucoin, told by Tiffany Bartok, a fellow makeup artist. This documentary highlights Aucoin's life as an LGBTQ+ advocate, his love of the makeup industry, and the tragic ending of his life.
1 Fantastic Flesh
Tumblr media
Fantastic Flesh is another documentary that dives into the art of makeup effects, as well as special effects. The documentary also focuses on the best of the best in the industry, and their experience so far. The documentary has a strong focus on Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, who are involved in KNB Make-Up EFX, and it is well worth a watch for any fan of the industry.
