Yeni kiraladığım evin temizliği için iki temizlikçi ablayı apartmanın kapısında karşılamıştım. 8. Katta olan eve çıkmak üzere biraz karanlık olan holden geçip asansöre bindik. Asansör biraz eski ve yavaş çalışıyordu. Her an duracakmış hissi ile 8. Kata çıktık. Bir katta üç daire vardı. İkisinin kapısı hemen asansörün yanında, benim evinki ise asansör kapısının hemen karşısındaydı. Diğer dairelerle duvar bağlantısı yoktu. Apartmanın merdivenleri benim duvarlarım ile komşularımın duvarları arasında boşluk oluşturuyordu. Açıkçası böyle olması çok hoşuma gitmişti. Fakat şimdiye kadar hep geniş evlerde oturduğum için yeni evime girdiğimde biraz küçük görünmüştü gözüme. Sanki çok kalabalıkmışız gibi eve sığamayacağımı falan düşünmüştüm tutmadan önce. Sonra yalnız olduğum geldi aklıma yeter bu bu bana diye düşünmüştüm. Gerçi yine de halili arayıp onay almak istedim. O da her zamanki gibi kararı bana bıraktı. Sadece neden bu kadar acele ediyorsun bir şeyleri değiştirmek için dedi. O an yine beni anlamadığını ve hiç anlamayacağını hissettim. Ayrılmak doğru bir karardı ve yine onu aradığım için kısa süreli bir pişmanlık yaşamıştım. Neyse ki doğru kararı verip o evi tuttum ve yeni hayatıma bir adım attım. Yarın taşınıyordum. Bugün önce yeni evimi temizledik ablalarla, sonra eski eve, tüm anıları orada bırakmak üzere, eşyaları toparlamak için geçtik. Bu kez dramatize etmek istemedim geçtiğim yolları. İş yerim yeni ev ile eski evimin tam ortasında bir noktada yer alıyordu ve artık afaki bir işim olmadıkça eski evimin yollarından geçmeyecektim. Bu benim gibi geçmişe takıntılı yengeç burcu için güzel bir şeydi. Çünküyeni yollar yeni ev yeni komşular yeni bir hayat geçmişi kapatıp yeni bir sayfa açmaya yeter diye düşünüyordum, yaşayacağım acılardan habersiz.

Annemlere taşınacağımı söylememe rağmen iki laf arasında gelelim mi dediler açıkçası çok istekli görünmedikleri için tek başıma halledebileceğimi söyledim. Bir de taşınırken yaşayacağım duygusal anlarda yanımda olup zayıflıklarımı görmelerini istemedim. Ablalar dışında sadece merve vardı yanımda eşyalarımı toparlarken. O süreçte merve olmasa kendimi çok daha kötü hisseder, o süreci çok zor atlatırdım. Merve de hamile olduğu için hiç kıyamadım aslında, gelme dedim ama dinletemedim. Eşyaları taşınmaya hazır edene kadar yanımdaydı. Cağnım kuzenim😘 kıyafetlerimi, oturma odasında bulunan kitaplığımı, çalışma masam ve dolabın içindekileri ben kolilemiştim. Mutfak eşyaları biraz zorlamıştı beni. Ablalarla beraber toparlarken kullanmadığım şeyleri de seçtim ve onlara verdim. Eve gelen temizlikçiler de böyle ufak tefek ekstraları çok seviyorlar. Çocuklarına giymediğim kıyafetleri de veriyordum.

I like how a lot of the supporting characters like Madison (who we expect will be a mean girl...but isn’t really) & Mr. McCarthy (time for more ‘tough looking’ teachers!) aren’t really what other films portray them as.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #219: The Spectacular Now (2013) - dir. James Ponsoldt

A dramedy in the vein of Say Anything... (1989), James Ponsoldt’s The Spectacular Now is a mostly enjoyable teen romance that proves a truth I have been considering ever since seeing The Descendants over five and a half years ago: Shailene Woodley is one of the most naturalistic and easily likeable actresses working in Hollywood. (This year’s HBO mini-series “Big Little Lies” pushed me further in this direction, but The Spectacular Now is confirmation of Woodley’s talent.) Technically, Spectacular’s protagonist is Sutter Keely (Miles Teller), the eighteen-year-old goofball who is more interested in drinking and partying than figuring out whether he should go to college, but Shailene Woodley’s Aimee Finecky is the sweet, geeky heart of the film. Aimee is a teenager who wants to believe in people’s best intentions, and the way she latches onto Sutter’s words of encouragement – telling her to stop being a wallflower and stop up to her controlling mother, for example – is lovely.

I mentioned Say Anything... because The Spectacular Now is similar in observing the complications that can arise at the end of high school, when youngsters must figure out the next steps that will take them down the path to adulthood. (I guess this is a theme that has intrigued me lately since I watched Orange County and The To Do List recently. Adventureland also applies, if you substitute college for high school.) Like Say Anything...’s wonder couple, Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court, The Spectacular Now’s pair balance the excitement of living in the present with uncertainty about the future. The main difference, however, is that Sutter is a character with a number of flaws, whereas most of the obstacles that Diane and Lloyd face are external (they are affected by events, like the criminal activities Diane’s dad partakes in, but the protagonists’ essential natures do not change much between the start and end of the film). I’m not terribly enthused by the similarity between Spectacular’s sappy ending and that of Adventureland, but it’s also reminiscent of Good Will Hunting, and I guess if we were here comparing screenwriting plot formulas, we would be here all week.

You’ve probably surmised that I am not as impressed with Miles Teller’s acting than I am with Shailene Woodley, but the film is definitely a step up from his performances in Footloose, That Awkward Moment, Two Night Stand and (yikes) Fantastic Four. I hold out hope that his star-making turn in Whiplash will convert me to a devotee. Fortunately, The Spectacular Now’s supporting cast is filled by dependable character actors and some newer faces in the industry, including Brie Larson, Masam Holden, Dayo Okeniyi, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyle Chandler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Bob Odenkirk, Andre Royo and Kaitlyn Dever. I don’t expect that I’ll want to watch the film again any time soon, but it was pleasant enough for one go around.

I really, really don’t do actors I imagine as characters in my mind. Actors can play the characters, but I’m not going to picture an actor as the character all on his/her own.

Greg est un lycéen introverti, adepte de l’autodérision, qui compte bien finir son année de Terminale le plus discrètement possible.
