if I had a nickel every time a hit harrison ford movie gave him a kid in the future as a way to continue the story, I'd have three nickels
It's not much but weird that it keeps happening
more spoilers:
Also!! One of the most intriguing things about the original was the ambiguity; was Decker a replicant?! WHY did the answer that!?!?!?!
This movie is also Super reductive with humanity qua reproductive ability. Like, couldn't the replicants just seize the means of production and make themselves?? Was Rachael more Human than K. because she could reproduce?? Was the Child more human because they were born?? The counter-movement put the child in "blue cloths" to throw them off - how did that work??? What did that mean in the context of how gender operates in the narrative? The replicants being more than their programing - humans being, similarly, more than a pre-determined bio-destiny - is something that the movie does not seem prepared to handle. The new replicants can lie (by omission, obfuscation, obstination) and therefore move beyond their coding - also, WHERE WAS THE QUEER-CODING?!?! - but were still distinct for not being "born" in the way "real" humans were.
And then! The movie turned desire for replicant or "real" women into a fetish?? K/Joe supposedly prefers "real" women, something Joi knew she couldn't Provide. Oyyyyyyy this movie was really sloppy with it's allegory.
Also, bold choice for the attempted reboot (requal? is that actually a thing or did Scream 5 make that up?) to somehow Double Down on techno-orientalism!!!!!!!!! Furthermore, to have All the scenes with Wallace/Leto saying he wants to have replicants as slaves he can breed - in a film seemingly uninterested in how racialized sexuality is depicted and perceived - felt like it was very quickly thrown aside as the movie turned into finding a macguffin

I really like cannibalism as a concept in fiction bc idk it does something for me
but i can’t help but feel that - as a vegan - a lot of the whole ‘dystopia where human meat is farmed or consumed on a mass scale’
Is almost always inherently vegan. Almost. (Obviously cannibalism can be a stand in for other things/issues as well)
And i feel like a large majority of media can sort of lose its way because it doesn’t acknowledge that it’s subject matter is kind of really very vegan in nature?
Like ok. You have a story about aliens coming to earth and treating humans like farm animals, and you’re gonna argue that it’s not about animal exploitation and the farming industry? that it’s not the sort of thing PETA (ew) would do in an ad campaign? (they literally did this as an ad campaign lol)
I think that’s what makes this brand of media so disturbing to us - because we know what we’re doing to some animals, and we know we wouldn’t like it very much.
So i can’t help but wonder what the point of creating this sort of media is without having that subtext of ‘hey um. maybe we shouldn’t do this to animals?’

What's that bro? You began interacting with a media from a different country than yours and/or was made in time period different than the recent present day? Haha that's sick bro! Keep expanding your horizons bro! You're remembering to take into account that sociocultural norms, gender roles and genre expectations are different from what you are used to and meeting the story halfway, instead of forcibly superimposing your ideals into the story, right bro? Right? Right?

When Izzy first walked out I was worried that he would be made into a joke that the crew would laugh at
Tumblr media
but then he started singing and the dancing began and I realized that he wasn’t meant to be a joke at all. This is the most open and happy we’ve ever seen Izzy and the show treated it that way. Not mocking him but instead celebrating this moment.
When we talk about queer representation it’s usually just focused on queer relationships, but what I love about this episode is it shows other sides of being queer. That moment where Izzy saw Wee John doing his makeup and had a realization that he wanted that too? That is what being queer means to me. The crew singing along and cheering for him? That is what being apart of the queer community means to me.
What i love about this show is that it shows queer joy, not in a sanitized way, but in away that is messy, beautiful, and without any mockery or shame.

guys im stuck on mobile and was editing it at 3 am when tumblr decided to do a silly and post a draft instead of saving it pls ignore it for now 😭😭😭 Tumblr is not letting me copy paste it all into a new draft kill me
stac media highlights of 2023
uhh dont ask why im posting this in march but i just like keeping track of this kinda stuff lol
Here is a list tm of the best media for me in 2023
no this listing is not in any order i just like talking abt things when i think abt them
One Piece Eiichiro Oda, 1997 - Present
What? I got into one piece this year??? who would have known???
i read all of op in 3 months and i loved every second of it
One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island, Mamoru Hosoda, 2005
why did no one tell me mamoru hosodas first feature film was a fucking one piece movie
Chainsaw Man, Fujimoto, 2018- Present
i fucking love love csm its literally the only manga that i talk abt with ppl on twit bc i think the majority of anitwit/mangatwit are annoying (pls shut up abt power scaling and ships for one minute PLEASE)
csms pt 2 run currently is much smoother and better than pt 1, i feel a lot closer to asa as a character over denji, and it makes the world feel more real as a result
Dungeon Meshi
Pls do not spoil this for me i am slow at reading and forgor to finish it but this series is an interesting look at
How Do You Live (The Boy and the Heron) Hayao Miyazaki, 2023
I'm not like super big into miyazaki films, I was more of an anno and mamoru hosoda person when i was growing up in the anime sphere, but i really wanted to see this film bc of the dark fantasy elements i heard abt when it first released in japan
Beau is Afraid, Ari Aster, 2023
yeah no its impossible to talk abt this film normally u have to see it its the most fucked up thing i watched in theaters this year and its the movie i wanted to walk out of like 3 times pls watch it
Twilight movies 2008-2012
These were really fun to watch with friends lol its weird to think abt how ya movies and books have changed so much
The Hunger Games books + movies
I've been listening to the Shrieking Shack (the only podcast i listen to lol) read through these books and Im like super enjoying it, theres a lot of interesting stuff they dig up that points out at the hypocrisy of the early 2010s and weird race stuff that happens in thg
i had fun with the movies, watched them with a friend who didnt remember much abt them and we had a great time not a big fan of how it kinda pioneered the gray cement aesthetic of big budget movies tho

george miller is so fucking cool, man, like he did the quintessential nihilist distopia, its amazing, arguably better sequel that's a poignant hopeful message on our collective strength to overcome fascism, a bizarre, sincere and funny treaty on love, desire and storytelling. also happy feet i guess????

Watching Crash and Crimes of the Future (2022) ... and then ending the weekend with Edward Scissorhands???
The complete lack of any edge play!!! The lack of stabbing as a a metaphor!!
I know they're different movies and doing different things with different themes, but also come on Scissorhands could've at least tried to have it's themes work right.
Burton is also a putz who is overrated

for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal
before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"
and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"

Just a quick not friendly reminder: someone who has apologized for past mistakes, made amends for past actions, and clearly no longer holds past beliefs, is a far better person than one who digs up old dirt and uses a person's past that no longer exists against them.

I enjoy criticizing the things I love so be aware that this is literally my favorite movie ever so far that I think is a masterpiece when I say that I think people are misguided in pretending there aren't any harmful tropes used in Atlantis at all. I believe the insanely mature way it handles its themes and the subtle details displaying Rourke's chillingly realistic ideology and the role historians ought to fulfill in the world makes up for it and gives the movie lots of value as a (barely even implied pretty explicit) allegory for colonialism, and the diversity is fantastic for a 2000s disney movie, but that doesn't make what the whole movie hinges on go away. I know people use the white savior trope to dismiss the whole movie and that can be frustrating but I see people try to claim it doesn't exist by citing how Milo is a great example of a historian and that doesn't really have anything to do with the problem people have with the movie. While I think the way the movie handles its themes makes up for it, it doesn't cancel the tropes about natives out. Like the Atlanteans have more agency and a better justification for why they'd need outside help than some movies 20 years ago would have given them but that doesn't mean that there isn't room to improve and that the movie is flawless in concept.
