When in New York (Kelley O’ Hara x reader)

Part 2
You had just finished post game media following your game against New York Liberty. You weren’t a huge fan of doing media but it made it easier considering Seattle had won. 
You leave the conference room with Stewie who you had been doing the interview with.
“You seeing your family tonight” You shake your head.
“What about you?” She nods hers.
She bumps her shoulder into yours “Two New Yorkers beat New York in New York. Sounds like something to celebrate to me” She says and maybe she had a point.
You both walk into the locker room, some players have already left and some were still packing up.
“Y/N? Megan texted saying that her and a couple other teammates are at your parents restaurant and asked if we wanted to meet up with them” Sue asks.
Very few people knew about the family restaurant, you wanted to keep it a secret so that it could stay authentic. Your family was Italian and the restaurant was like a little piece of Italy in New York. The only people that knew where your Storm teammates and Megan, the honorary team mom.
You look at sue and she is giving you the look. After signing for the team she had taken you under her wing meaning that the two of you had got quite close.
“Ok, ok. No need to give me that look” You says.
After a quick shower and a change of clothes you leave the area, luckily for you the restaurant is only a few blocks away so you and Sue opted to walk saying that I would be your cool down / recovery.
“You said teammates” you says putting air-quotes around the word teammates “who’s there?” You ask.
“Alex and Kelley” she says which instantly bring a smile to your face.
“I thought that would cheer you up”
“Shut up”
You had a crush on Kelley, both Sue and Megan knew it. You met her last year when to US were playing in Seattle and Megan had invited you to a game. There was something about the defender that you really liked. You wasn’t if it was the fact that on the pitch she is a beast and off she is teddy but always had fun when you were with her.
You both enter the restaurant being greeted by your mom as soon as you come through the door.
“Mrs L/N nice to see you again” Sue says.
“Sue I have told you before, you can call me Maria” You mom says as she hugs you and sue makes her way to your friends.
“buon gioco dolce ragazza” (good game sweet girl) she tells you.
“grazie mamma” you reply kissing her cheek.
Meanwhile sue heads towards to table of soccer players.
She waves at everyone getting a mixture of hi’s and hello’s 
“Hi babe” She says kissing her girlfriend on the cheek. 
“Hi” Megan replies. “Where Y/N?” She asks noticing that you wasn’t behind sue.
“She’s in here somewhere” Sue says. She knew that you would probably been saying hi to your dad in the kitchen but she couldn’t tell them that.
“See Kel, you have a few more moments to get your crush in check” Alex jokes with her friend.
“Shut up!” Kelley replies.
“Hi guys” you say as to approach the table.
You notice Kelley staring at you so you take the opportunity to tease her.
“Like what you see?” You say making the defender blush.
“Have you ordered food yet?” You ask.
“No we were waiting for you. We know we are having though” Alex tells you as she hands you a menu.
“Thanks but I don’t need it” You say handing the menu to Sue who shakes her head letting you know she doesn’t need it either.
“You already know what you’re having?” Kelley asks.
“Not exactly” Sue says which confuses the others.
Looking around the restaurant you catch the attention of one of the waiters.
You let him know you are ready to order. 
Each of the women tell him what they want and then it is your’s and sue’s turn.
You look at sue and she nods her head.
“dì a gianni che avremo quello che consiglia” (tell gianni we will have what he recommends) Sue says 
“Certo” The waiter says.
You look at Sue and smile in approval.
“You getting very good, maybe time for a trip” You say.
“You speak Italian?” Kelley asks Sue.
“Y/N does and she has been teaching me for the past couple of years”
“Who is Gianni?” Alex asks.
“He is the chef here” You explain.
You start talking about the storm game when you mom bring across a bottle of limoncello hand you the bottle and 5 shot glasses.
“Grazie” You say
You pour everyone a glass and hand them out. 
“You get table service here?” Kelley asks.
“No, I asked for it when I came in” You reply.
You raise you class and everyone copies.
“Here to us. We change the game and provide hope for the next generation of female athletes” You say and everyone takes a sip except Kelley who shots it.
“You sip it Kel. If not you’ll be on the floor an hour” Megan says.
“You would know” you tease causing you and the forward to laugh.
“I will pour you another but this here” you say pointing to the bottle “is the real stuff, not something you find in a liquor store. It comes straight from a vineyard in Italy where this restaurant makes it’s wine” 
“You know a lot about this restaurant, the chef’s name and now where it makes it’d alcohol” Alex questions.
“What can I say, I have been coming here since I was a baby” you explain.
“that’s one way to put it” sue says under her breath, no quiet enough though as you send her a glare.
You look at Kelley as she takes a sip.
“Tastes better doesn’t it” She nods her head.
Your food arrives and you all say how nice it looks and smells. 
“Oh.my.god” Kelley says between mouthfuls.
“I agree, this is incredible. Megan how did you find this place? Alex asks.
“Y/N” Megan replies and Alex nods remembering that you said you came here when I was younger.
Conversation is small and simple as you all focus on your food.
You thank the waiter telling him the the food was delicious as he clears the table.
“Y/N can I ask you a question” Kelley asks.
“Only if I can ask you one?” 
“Why Italian and are you fluent” She asks
“I’m Italian so I had to learn in order to talk to family in Sicily”
“Prove it. Tell me something in Italian?” 
“quando ci siamo conosciuti pensavo fossi la persona più bella del mondo”
“Sounds very romantic” Alex says.
“What does it mean?” Kelley asks.
“it means ‘when we met I thought you were the most beautiful person in the world’” You tell her making sure to look her in the eyes when you say it.
Kelley is at a loss for words, what is she suppose to say to that. 
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable” You say slowly regretting what you said, not that you didn’t mean because you did.
“I’ll go get us some more drinks” you says excusing yourself from the table.
“Kelley” Alex says trying to get her friends attention.
“Does she say that kind of thing to everyone?” Kelley asks sue.
She shakes her head “She isn’t that type of person Kelley”
“You should tell her how you feel” Megan suggests.
Kelley shakes her head “what if she doesn’t feel the same way”
“You honestly think that after hearing what she just said” Alex says not believing her friends blindness.
You walk back to the table with two bottles of red wine.
“Dessert wine anyone?” You say trying to avoid the awkwardness. “trust me, this will be the best you tasted”
“It’s what they make in Italy right?” Alex says, you nod pouring her a glass.
Out of all the woman at the table to knew that Alex was the one that drank wine. You wait eagerly to see If she likes it. 
“Nice right”
Alex nods her head.
You all sip on your wine talking about everything and anything, for a moment you forget that you are all major athletes and it just feels like a group of friends catching up.
Once you are done Alex gets the attention of the waiter for the bill but he tells them that it has been settled.
She looks around the table confused but notices that Megan and Sue and looking directly at you.
“Y/N” 
“What? We don’t do this very often. Let me treat my friends”
“Thank you” Alex and Kelley say at the same time.
You are just about to leave when your mom comes to the table.
“Did you all enjoy your meal?” She asks. 
“It was incredible, I cannot wait to come back” Kelley says.
“I agree, I will definitely come back whenever we are in New York” Alex says.
“I’ll see you two soon ok” she says putting an arm around Sue and Megan. She had met them numerous times when she came to Seattle but her comment stumped the other two.
“Of course, next time your in Seattle you have to show me how to make your lasagne, I always eat the ones you make Y/N” Megan looks at you when you realises what she said.
It looks like your secret was about to get two new keepers.
“Alex, Kelley” your mom says now directed her attention to the other two soccer players “Any friends of my daughters are always welcome here”
“Wait, your daughter?” Kelley says looking at you confused.
“Meet my mom Maria” you say.
“This makes more sense. It is why you know so much about this restaurant” Alex says.
You nod your head.
You all make sure your way our of the restaurant. You had learned that Megan, Alex and Kelley were all staying in the same hotel as you and sue so you walked back together. Sue, Megan and Alex walk ahead leaving you and Kelley alone.
“I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable earlier, it’s just that whenever I am near you I feel this connection and thought maybe you felt it too. I wouldn’t have said what I said if I didn't” you say
“I wasn’t uncomfortable, you caught me of guard. Nobody has every said something like that to me, definitely not in Italian” Kelley explains.
“I find that hard to believe, I mean look at you, you are beautiful” You say.
Kelley blushes again which you find adorable “ You were right before. I feel the connection too but I never did anything about it because we live so far away from each other”
“Can’t we just let ourself be happy even it it’s only a short period of time. We focus so much on the bigger picture that we don’t see what is right in front of us” You tell her.
“What do you have in mind?” She asks and you smile, you had wanted to do this for a quite a while.
“When do you leave New York?”
“Not until the day after tomorrow” 
“Perfect! Have breakfast with me?”
“I would love to” she replies.
Kelley stops walking “for the record, I find you very beautiful too”
You smile holding you hand out and she takes it.
You walk back to the hotel hand in hand, not talking just making the most of each others company whilst you can.

Ten Things    IV
Summary: If there’s one thing you have to know about Harvey Kinkle, it’s that he rarely thinks things through. So when he meets (and falls for) Sabrina Spellman on his first day of Baxter High and finds out that she can’t date anyone until her tempestuous sister does, it seems like the obvious solution is to get someone to date her so he can go out with Sabrina. A not so obvious choice for the challenge is Caliban, but, hey, it’s not like Harvey thought that far.

It seemed that when it came to Sabrina Spellman, Harvey would always be nervous. He had these lame little butterflies whenever she tutored him (that spiked when she’d take his hand to correct something). He almost threw up before their next meeting after the head-kissing debacle. And now he was supposed to pick her up for the costume party. 
Three costume changes, a near heart attack, and fifteen minutes spent brushing his teeth and fixing his hair later, and Harvey stood outside her house. Her very creepy house. He'd just reached for the door knocker again when it swung open. 
Ambrose stood there, giving Harvey a very knowing smile as he looked him up and down. “Afraid she’s not here, friend,” he said, not sounding too disappointed or afraid. “Though in an outfit like that I can’t imagine why.” 
Harvey looked down at his jeans, dark t-shirt, and leather jacket and suddenly wished he’d gone with Tommy’s old Captain America costume even though his hair was the wrong color. He reached up and adjusted his hardhat. “It was kind of last-minute,” Harvey admitted awkwardly. “Anyway, uh, what do you mean she’s not here?” 
“That she left with one Nicholas Scratch about fifteen minutes ago,” Ambrose said. He nodded gravely before continuing, “Though my other cousin is here if you-” 
“No, I’m good thanks,” Harvey said quickly. Ambrose raised an eyebrow and Harvey felt he had to explain, so in a quiet voice he added, “She kinda scares me.” 
“Oh, Harvey, you don’t have to suck up to me,” you said with a very mischievous smile as you walked around Ambrose. Harvey went through the four stages of shock as he took in your outfit: A blue and gold cheerleading uniform (weird enough) with the letters DK on your chest and your hair and makeup perfectly done. Sabrina must have done the hair and makeup because you looked like an entirely different person like this, except that your mouth was covered in blood and you wore white-out contacts and a pair of fangs. “She doesn’t listen to me anyway.”
It took Harvey a second to realize that he was supposed to answer you, and, in that second, you and Ambrose let out matching (almost evil) laughs and started cracking jokes about how innocent Harvey was. It was hard to think of innocence when fake blood was running down your neck. At least, Harvey hoped it was fake.
“So, uh, do you need a ride?” Harvey asked in an attempt to recover from the millions of conflicting thoughts he had and his earlier social blunder. 
“You’re offering to spend time with me in an enclosed space?” you asked, looking slightly taken aback. Harvey nodded almost immediately. “Wow, you must really like her, huh?” 
“No, that’s not what- well, I mean, yeah, I like her,” Harvey stammered. Your smile got a bit wider as you and Ambrose shared some side-eye at his expense. “But that’s not why I’m offering. I just- you know, I’m already here. And the environment is in shambles. So carpooling is, like, the responsible thing to do-”
You laughed and untangled yourself from Ambrose to grab your things. “You’re cute, Harvey Kinkle.” You waved at Ambrose and started closing the door as you stepped outside, ignoring his cries to play nice with Harvey. “I get what she sees in you.” 
“Thank you?”

This costume party was all Sabrina had thought about for the entire year, and now that she was here all she could think about was Harvey. What was that about? She was here with Nick. Her Nick. She should be having the time of her life listening to him talking about his latest modeling gig, not wondering if Harvey was going to show up. Or what he’d be dressed as if he did. Or- 
“Hey, are you even listening to me?” Nick asked teasingly, grabbing her hand and pulling her closer to him. 
“Of course! You were talking about how your agent thinks you could get that underwear deal,” Sabrina lied. That was almost all Nick talked about, so it wasn’t that hard to guess. Harvey would have been more difficult to lie to, but Harvey would’ve drawn her flowers and laughed her distraction off. “And they’d be idiots not to take you,” she said, stumbling into Nick’s arms after he pulled her closer. 
“Thank you! That’s what I said but my agent …” Nick carried on talking through their rather forced slow dance, but Sabrina stopped listening when she saw Harvey walk in. 
He looked so handsomely awkward in his miner outfit as he said ‘No, but thank you’ to all the girls offering him punch and dances. His dark eyes looked so hopeful as he scanned the room and it broke Sabrina’s heart when that hope went out as their eyes met. 
She hurriedly separated from Nick, almost tripping over her feet in her rush, but Harvey was gone by the time she did. And when Sabrina looked back at Nick, he looked annoyed and confused. 
“If you didn’t want to hear about what Estelle said, all you had to do was say,” Nick said a deep-set frown. 
“It’s not that. I just thought I-” 
Nick shook his head and started walking away. “Whatever. I’m gonna go get a drink.”
Sabrina let out a breath, suddenly feeling very alone and exposed in this crowded room. Her spirits lifted when she looked around and saw you outside with a very attractive blonde guy, and - better yet - you weren’t telling him to piss off. He must have been Caliban, but he looked very different in his flowy white shirt and blue jeans from your description of ‘he looks like an asshole, but the kind you want to makeout with just to get him to stop talking.’ 
At least one of you was having a good night.

“So what exactly are you dressed as?” you asked, taking a sip from your solo cup in an attempt to come off as cool and not annoyingly flustered by Caliban. Saying something mean would get you out of this mess for sure. “Because you look like one of those idiots from the cover of a trashy lady novel.”
“While I wasn’t going for idiotic, that’s exactly what I am,” Caliban said with a smile. He took the cup from your hand and took a sip, eyes twinkling mischievously as he did. “You seem surprised.” 
You shrugged, chiding yourself for thoughts of Caliban’s lips on the spot where yours had been five seconds ago. “I didn’t have you pegged as a romance novel kind of guy.”
“And what kind of guy is that?” 
His question was innocent enough, but it was the way he asked it that made your heart skip an irritating beat. Caliban was distracting enough with half his chest exposed and pretty white lace constantly drawing your attention to it. And, if that wasn’t enough, his dumb blonde curls had framed his face when he leaned in to ask you. 
“The kind of guy who carries around a lighter because he likes to burn things,” you said, taking your cup back and taking the last sip to spite him. 
Caliban looked amused in the corner of your eye as he drew back. “Well, we can’t all be demonic cheerleaders, princess,” he said. “Assuming that’s what you’re dressed as.” 
“You’re close. I’ll give you a hint,” you said and turned back to him. You held out your hand and asked for his lighter. Caliban didn’t say anything as he placed it in your hand, but he didn’t break eye contact. You uncapped it, lit it, and held it up to your mouth. The flame got dangerously close to your tongue before you blew it out. In your best Jennifer Check voice, you said, “I’m a god.” 
Caliban started laughing as you capped the lighter. “Well, if anyone is going to make killing boys nearly as attractive as Megan Fox, it’s you,” he said. “Though I don’t remember the white contacts.” 
“I took some creative liberties,” you said with a small shrug. You reached for his hand and gave his lighter back to him. 
After you pulled your hand away, Caliban shook his head and held the lighter back out to you. “You should keep it. Far more attractive when it's with you.” 
“What about all the pretty things you like to set on fire?” you asked. 
Caliban took a step closer and lifted his hand to tuck some hair behind your ear. He took his time, keeping his eyes on his hands before looking at your lips and then finally meeting your eyes. “They’ll have to take the backseat to another pretty little thing.” 
“I’m going to get another drink,” you blurted out as you took a step back. Not your smoothest move, but you needed to get the hell out of there before you did something dumb like kiss him. “Stay here.” 
You could hear the smirk on his face when Caliban said, “Whatever you want.”
Luckily, it only took a few frightened looks from the underclassmen to renew your confidence. The contacts were doing their job of unsettling people perfectly, and it made your night to see people who were checking out moments before start squirming. Until you reached Nick Scratch. 
Despite the fact that you knew he was afraid of you, he didn’t squirm. He just looked at you with that smug face that made Sabrina fall for him. You hated him.
“And what are you dressed as tonight, kitty cat?” Nick asked, deliberately emphasizing the old nickname. It made your skin crawl. 
You started answering when you looked up at him and pretended to be shocked. “Wait, Nick- was that … did your hairline just recede?” You pointed at his hairline and grabbed two cans of soda while he checked. 
Nick didn’t try to follow you when you started walking away, but he did start talking loud enough for you to hear him over the music. “You know, your sister likes my hair just fine. She even-” 
You turned around and gave him your harshest glare as you stomped closer. “Stay away from my sister.” 
“Woah-” Nick held his hands up in surrender. “I’ll stay away from your sister,” he promised. He took a step closer and lowered his voice. “But I can’t guarantee she’ll stay away from me.”
He bumped your shoulder as he walked past you, and you would’ve thrown something at him if he didn’t get swallowed up by the crowd of people racing towards a fight in the other room. Instead, you opted for cursing Nick out with every profanity you could think of as you slammed the sodas down and started looking for something a little stronger. 
An over-eager junior was offering you something to drink from his tray of assorted bad alcohol when you saw Caliban again. He was still annoyingly attractive, but he was very clearly pissed that you'd ditched him. Oh well. 
“What is this?” he asked as you downed one of the drinks. It tasted disgusting but you refused to pull a face in front of him. “I’ve been looking all over the place for you.” 
“Maybe you should go look for someone who actually likes you,” you said without looking at him as you downed another drink and the junior cheered you on. You grabbed another drink, despite Caliban’s protests, and disappeared into the masses.

Of all the ways Caliban saw this night going, you ditching him for a bottle of cheap tequila and Harvey looking like someone kicked his puppy hadn’t been his most likely pick. Apparently, Sabrina had blown him off for Nicholas, but Caliban wasn’t listening to Harvey's tragic story so much as he was trying to track you down. He left him with a very surprised vampire named Theo and focused his attention on finding you. 
“Hey, James Dean!” Nicholas yelled as he slapped Caliban on the back with unrequited fondness. If he had any awareness at all, it wasn't picking up on the glare Caliban gave him. “How did you get her to do it?” 
“Do what?” Caliban asked, promising himself that he could punch Nicholas in the mouth after he made sure you weren’t throwing up in the bushes. 
“Act like a human.” Caliban would have to table that promise because Nick was going to- “Oh, yeah!” 
The music started blaring from the dining room and Nicholas took off to see some girl dancing on the table. Only, that just wasn’t some girl. That was you, doing a very non-PTA approved cheer for the people around you. 
Caliban rushed to get to you, but all you did was grab the drawstrings on Caliban’s shirt and run one of them across your lips before standing back up and continuing your dance, ignoring his repeated requests to come down. The only time you looked at him was when you stepped too far back and fell off the table, hitting your head on the chandelier as you went down. 
Caliban caught you and looked at him with the saddest look in your eyes he’d ever seen. You were so uncharacteristically vulnerable after who knows how much alcohol and a head injury.  “You know, you’ve got a bit of gold in your eyes, Sparky,” you said softly, lifting your hand to the side of his face. 
“Hey, what about our show?” Nick hollered from the safety of his pack with Billy and the other idiots. They made a few more comments as Caliban carried you out to the garden to get fresh air. 
You kept trying to push him away, but as soon as Caliban set you down on the low brick wall, your hands tightened around his shirt. “Don’t go. I just need to lie down somewhere.” 
“If you lie down now, you’ll fall asleep,” Caliban said, prying your fingers off his shirt one at a time as you argued that sleep was good. “Not if you have a concussion, princess. Can you-”
“Hey, we need to talk,” Harvey interrupted. He was surprised when you latched onto his sleeve and let him know that his hat was askew. 
“I’m a little busy right now, Harvey,” Caliban said through gritted teeth as he untangled you from Harvey. You didn't want to let go, and you were just as stubborn when you were smashed as when you were sober. 
“I see that but can you give me like one second?” Harvey asked. 
“Aww, go talk to him!” you hiccuped. “I’m fine. I’ve got these hydrated-" You frowned. "These hurgerated-” 
“Hydrangeas?” Harvey asked, still confused. 
“Hydrangeas!” You beamed at him, which looked slightly terrifying with your smudged makeup and bloody face. “Thank you! I’ve got these hiiigh-drangeas to keep me company.”
Reluctantly, Caliban sighed and walked a few feet away with Harvey. He was still making sure that you were upright when Harvey started babbling. 
“It’s off. The deal’s off, okay?” Harvey finished. “Sabrina never liked me. She liked Nick this whole time but I thought that, you know, after all this she’d give me a shot but she didn’t and-” 
Caliban cut Harvey off before his head exploded and you fell over. “Harvey, do you like her?” 
“Yeah…” Harvey said, sounding confused. 
“And is she worth all this trouble?” 
“Well, I thought she was. I mean, of course, she is. But you know-” 
“Either she is, or she isn’t.” Caliban put a hand on Harvey’s shoulder and Harvey somehow looked even more confused by the touch. “First of all, Nicholas is not half the man that you are. He's an asshole. And secondly, don’t let anyone ever make you feel like you don’t deserve what you want.” He put his other hand on Harvey and shook him slightly as he said, “So go for it.”
Before Harvey could respond, Caliban saw you falling into the hydrangeas in his peripheral vision and dashed to save you from another head injury. 
You laughed as he held onto you and twirled the strings of his shirt around your finger before getting very quiet. The same vulnerability shone through as you looked at him. “Could you take me where the music isn't too loud?” 
“Of course.” 
Caliban helped you to your feet and almost carried you through the crowd of people to get out to the front, shooting Harvey a not so subtle glance to make sure he made up his mind. He helped you the neighborhood playground across the street while you mumbled about how opprobrious it was to have to be carried out of some high school party. 
“Opprobrious,” Caliban repeated, shaking his head. “Leave it to you to use big words when you’re smashed.”
“If I were smashed, could I do this?” you asked, promptly untangling yourself and falling down into the grass a second after you tried to show off. “Ow,” you said in disbelief. 
Caliban bent over to help you up and you pushed him off with one hand and pulled him closer with the other. As a result, Caliban came crashing to the ground. He did his best not to crush you as he landed, which you found extremely funny. 
Your mouth was tilted up to the sky as you laughed. The street lamps lit up your smile and Caliban couldn’t help but notice how pretty it made you look. You caught him looking at you and fell quiet again. You turned to look back at him, not saying anything at first. 
“Why are you being so nice to me?” you asked softly, tucking one hand under your head and - tentatively, gingerly - reaching out with your other. 
Caliban looked down at your outstretched hand as you started playing with his shirt again. He found himself wishing you reached out for him and not his shirt. “Because you have a drunken concussion and someone needs to look after you.”
“Why does it have to be you?” you asked, frowning at the knot you'd created. “It’s not like you care if I never wake up.”
“Of course, I do,” Caliban said, leaning closer like he was going to tell you a secret. “If you didn’t wake up, I’d have to start talking to girls who actually like me.” 
You scoffed and threw his shirt back at Caliban. “Like you could find one,” you said as you rolled to your feet. 
“See, who needs affection when I have blind hatred?” Caliban asked as he followed you to the swing set. He wrapped his hands around each of the chains of your swing as he leaned down to speak to you. “Why would I want someone else’s affection when I have your prejudice?” 
“Just let me breathe for a second and then I’m gonna say something so mean that you-” You frowned and shook your head, looking down at the ground. “I just need a minute, alright?” 
“Alright.” 
Caliban took a step back and let himself think for a moment. As rocky as this night had been, he thought it was going fairly well until he found you three drinks in with a junior. He didn’t have time to dwell on why you ditched him, though, because you were falling backward and he had to dive forward to catch you. 
You started laughing as you righted yourself and Caliban swore. He sat in the swing next to you and took a deep breath when he was sure you weren’t going to fall over again. “So what did Nicholas say to drive you to drink?” he asked, nudging you with the toe of his shoe. 
You rolled your eyes. “Nick just has to open his mouth to make me want to drink,” you mumbled. 
“But usually you resort to a witty comeback and not tequila,” Caliban said as quietly snarky as he could. “What made this different?” 
“I just … I hate him,” you admitted. “And my sister …”
“Your sister?” Caliban asked, turning back to face you. You’d already started leaning on your chain with your eyes closed. Not only were your eyes closed, but you were seconds away from falling on your face. “Oh, shit. No, no, no, I need you to wake up. Hey, look at me. You need to wake up.” 
“Mm hey,” you said quietly, looking up at him and smiling. “You know, your eyes-”
You cut yourself off by vomiting on the grass just in front of his shoes. Caliban pulled a face and tried not to sound too disgusted as he said, “Have a bit of gold in them?” 
“Yeah, how’d you know?”

Sabrina stood with Prudence while the party died down. She hadn’t seen you since your table dancing incident but according to a quick text from your phone, Caliban made sure you got some air and took you home. With you gone and her mad at Nick for how he acted with you, that left her without a ride. 
“Hey, a few of us are going to Jarrett’s,” Nick said. He put one arm around Sabrina and the other around Prudence. “You ready to go?” 
“Oh, thanks, but I have to be home in twenty minutes or my aunts will have my head,” Sabrina lied.
“Well, I don’t have a curfew or overprotective family,” Prue said slyly. Her smile shifted from Sabrina to Nick. 
Nick shot a glance at Sabrina and she shrugged. “I can’t tonight,” she said. 
“Damn …” Nick sighed and looked over at Prudence. “Well, do you wanna go?” 
“I’d love to,” Prudence said, sliding her hand into Nick’s and leading him away. Sabrina would have argued if she cared about him or thought it would make a difference. When Prudence wanted something, she got it.
The only thing Sabrina did care about was how she was going to get home. Her options were slowly dwindling and her aunts would ground her for life if they saw the kind of party she was at. 
“Having fun tonight?” Harvey asked as he walked past her, still glum from earlier. 
“Yeah, tons,” Sabrina said with a sigh. Harvey kept walking so she rushed to keep up with him. “Hey, Harvey, I know … I know I don’t deserve it but do you think you could give me a ride home?”
Harvey let out a breath and turned to face her. Sabrina braced herself for what he’d say, for the moment that gentle, sweet Harvey would turn out to be no better than Nick. That moment didn’t happen. 
“Sure,” he said with a shrug. “Come on, my truck’s parked down the street.”
Sabrina didn’t know what to say as they walked to the truck, so she just didn’t say anything. Her hand brushed Harvey’s a few times and it broke her heart when he yanked his hand away. She deserved it, though; she broke his heart first. 
They didn’t speak as Harvey drove, and it took them a few seconds once the engine was off to say something. 
“You never really wanted to go out with me, did you?” Harvey asked, looking at the steering wheel instead of her. “It was always Nick, wasn’t it?” 
“It used to be Nick,” Sabrina admitted. “But he’s not very nice to me anymore. He just … I don't know.” She looked out the windshield and shrugged. “And you drove me home after I blew you off. I don’t deserve how nice you are to me.”
“No, you don’t,” Harvey said. He turned to face Sabrina and she knew that this was the moment. “Just because you’re beautiful and smart doesn’t mean that you can treat people like they don’t matter. I- I really liked you, you know? Even when people said you were selfish. Or that you were using me.” 
Sabrina sucked it up and turned to look at him. It didn’t surprise her that people said those things, and it didn't surprise her that Harvey defended her. He was the kind of guy who did that for people he cared about, not that he'd be doing it for her again any time soon. “I’m sorry.” 
Harvey was quiet. His jaw tightened for a moment and then he looked away. “Yeah, well, it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like you liked me much, to begin with.” 
“I do like you, Harvey,” Sabrina said. She resisted the urge to reach out to him. “I like you a lot. That’s the problem.”
“Oh,” Harvey said quietly, frowning. “I’m sorry.” 
Sabrina laughed and leaned over before she could talk herself out of it again. She cupped his face and pulled him into a kiss, which he returned after a second of hesitation. It was sweet, clumsy, and over too soon. 
“Don’t apologize,” Sabrina whispered when she pulled away. She gave him another smile and gathered her things. “Thanks for the ride.”

“Here we are,” Caliban said as he parked the car in front of the old house. “Home sweet home.” 
You pulled a face at the mortuary sign and turned away from the window. “Ugh, don’t you just want to keep driving?” you said. “Maybe to the ER? I’ve heard alcohol poisoning is a real bitch.”
“That it is but considering you puked your stomach contents all over my shoes, I think you’re safe,” Caliban said with a smile. Though he knew he’d take you wherever you wanted if he knew it wasn’t just the residual alcohol in your system talking. You just shrugged without saying anything. “Why don’t you want to go inside?” 
“My family is … complicated,” you said. You started picking at the sleeves of your cheerleader outfit instead of looking at him. “My parents died when I was little and my aunts took us all in. They’re great, really, they just want me to be someone I’m not.” 
“Like who?” Caliban asked. 
You sat straighter in your seat and put on a dashing smile before imitating your sister. “I’m Sabrina. I get good grades and don’t punch people even when they deserve it.” If the voice was accurate, it had nothing on the imitation laugh. It was downright creepy with all your smudged demonic makeup, but then you deflated into your seat and started mumbling profanities and Caliban knew you were back to yourself. 
“Well, no offense to your sister, but I think the whole people-pleasing act is overrated,” Caliban said. “There are better things to do with your time.” 
“You really think so?” you asked quietly. When Caliban looked over at you, all your snark had faded away to your familiar drunken vulnerability. “You’re not just saying that?” 
“I really think so,” Caliban said. “Why do you think I like you so much?”
“You like me?” you asked, seemingly caught off-guard. 
“I wouldn’t have let you throw up on me if I didn’t.” 
Caliban wasn’t sure what he expected you to do, but leaning in to kiss him wasn’t even on the top ten most likely options. It made his heart race, but he knew it wasn’t right. As much as he wanted to kiss you, he didn’t want to kiss you like this. 
“Maybe we should do this another time,” Caliban said, turning to face the steering wheel before you could kiss him.
You frowned at him, sinking slowly into your seat. You looked at him but you were strangely quiet as you did. Then, with speed Caliban didn’t know you had in this state, you got out of the car and slammed the door shut. 
Not quite the way Caliban saw this night ending.

I was walking next to Bryce trough the doors of liberty high, I knew he was popular, and I knew my friends were too. Bryce warned me this morning that I’m going to be the subject that students talk about the first few weeks, positive and negative. People can be jealous he said. “let’s make this an amazing junior year” I smiled before I pushed the heavy door in front of me open.
 “are you coming to the game Friday?” Monty asked me leaning against my locker. “well hello to you too, I guess I’ll have to since that’s the first official game for the cheerleaders” I smiled putting my books in my bag. It was the second week of school and upcoming Friday the sports seasons start again, I joined cheer team and we have this ceremony Wednesday and Friday is the first official game. You and monty talked while walking to Spanish.
 It was lunchbreak and Jeff came up to you, “hey Megan, do you know where Monty is?” I looked up from my phone “hey jeff, I have no clue, why would I know” you smiled. “well I figured since you two are always together since begin schoolyear.” He laughed while sitting down next to you, I was about to respond when I heard Jessica and Zach coming up. “Mrs. Robinson sucks! It’s only the second week of school and we have an assignment” she sighed; Zach laughed. “Mrs. Robinson? Oh chemistry right?” you asked while taking a bite of your sandwich.
 At the same time Monty came up to our table and sat down next to me placing his arm around my shoulder, I looked over and smiled “hey Mont” he greeted some of the boys and faced you, “I like that name, shorty” you pouted “stop calling me that” he laughed “you’re cute, can I copy your Spanish?” I snorted and handed him my textbook. Jeff started talking “Monty, coach told me to let you know you need to come by at his office after school, it’s about the captain thing” Mont nodded
 Justin sat down next to Jessica and gave her a kiss on her cheek “Averly, this girl named Hannah or something was looking for you” he said while looking at you. “shit, I promised her to be in the library during lunch break.” I quickly stood up and grabbed my stuff “Cruz, can you keep my Spanish book with you or are you already done” he looked up “since when are we on last names? And yes, I’ll give it back later” I smiled and said goodbye and then walked to the library.
 Hannah and I were assigned to do our history project together, and since I wanted to start the year good we thought it would be smart to finish it as soon as possible, luckily the project wasn’t huge so after lunchbreak we already were halfway. “I have to get to math, but we can finish it after school?” I asked. “uhm yea sure, my house?” Hannah shyly asked. “alright see you then” I flashed her a smile and walked away.
I wasn’t looking and was busy on my phone when I walked into someone. “omg im so sorry-“ I started, I looked up and saw Bryce, he laughed. “can you tell mom that I’m working on a history project so I’m home later?” Bryce nodded, I thanked him and then walked further. I texted monty,

 You laughed and then walked into math, “hey Zach”
 You where waiting at your locker when you finally saw Monty. “geez what took you so long” i immediately said. “I had to take a piss” he smirked while he handed your Spanish book, “well I didn’t really needed to know that, good luck at the coach” you smiled “yes thanks, it’s about whether I or Jeff gets to be captain upcoming season” he looked nervous, I put my hand on his arm “you got this, but I gtg, history project” I gave him a quick hug and then walked towards my car.
 History project sucked, but I did get to know Hannah better tho. She’s a good girl but she seems afraid of me or something. I tried to be as nice to her as I am to everyone, but she still was shy. When I left, I decided to check if Monty was still at school. I just got there when I saw him walking across the parking lot. “Monty!!” I yelled, he turned around and smiled when he saw me, he jogged towards me and I stepped out of my car.
 “and? How did it go” I asked hoping for the best. He smiled widely “im the captain”. I gave him a hug, I knew how much this meant for him “I’m so proud of you, mont” he smirked “so we’re back on nicknames, shorty” I laughed “just shut up”. he bit his lip “make me”, I looked up “I mean I could try but I’m to short to reach your lips” I smiled, he rolled his eyes “fuck you megan” he put his hands under my ass and lifted me up to kiss me. he put me back down and I started to blush, he started to walk away. When he was in front of his car he yelled this “you’re cute when you’re blushing, goodnight shorty” I smirked and got back in my car.
 When I got home everyone was already eating, “hey guys” I said while putting my bag on the floor. I went and sat next to my mother across from Bryce. “how was history?” mom asked
 “Megan, hurry!!” Bryce yelled from down the stairs. “we’re gonna be late!”, I quickly came down the stairs, I grabbed some fruit and then we both left for school. It was Wednesday and you only have 2 lessons because it’s the ceremony. Everything was explained at cheer practice yesterday, they call a player and the assigned girl goes first, does a short routine and then the player follows. You were assigned with Zach, you didn’t mind since he’s a good friend of you and you guys get along great.
 I was talking in the hallway with Montgomery when his name got called, “I got to go, but I know you’ve got this meg.” He smiled and then walked trough the doors. I heard the speakers “and now Zach Dempsey!” he opened the doors for me, I took a deep breath and then did my routine.

What book are you reading, what genre is it and do you like it so far? “Say You Love Me” by Willow Rose. It’s a murder-mystery and thriller. It’s the 4th book in a series and I’ve really enjoyed them all so far. They’ve all had a really crazy twist I didn’t see coming.

Is your grandparents’ house obsessively tidy? Yeah.

The national celebration of African American History was started by Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard-trained historian and the founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, and first celebrated as a weeklong event in February of 1926. After a half century of overwhelming popularity, the event was expanded to a full month in 1976 by President Gerald Ford.
 Here at UCF Libraries we believe that knowledge is key to living a good life and that sharing information benefits everyone. This is why our featured bookshelf suggestions range from celebrating outstanding African Americans to having difficult conversations about racism and American History. We are proud to present our top 24 favorite books by, and/or about, African Americans.

 A Rap on Race by Margaret Mead and James Baldwin A black writer's emotional response to American racism is juxtaposed with the logical analyses of a social scientist. Suggested by Rebecca Hawk, Circulation
 Backlash: what happens when we talk honestly about racism in America by George Yancy When George Yancy penned a New York Times op-ed entitled “Dear White America” asking white Americans to confront the ways that they benefit from racism, he knew his article would be controversial. But he was unprepared for the flood of vitriol in response. The resulting blowback played out in the national media, with critics attacking Yancy in every form possible—including death threats—and supporters rallying to his side. Despite the rhetoric of a “post-race” America, Yancy quickly discovered that racism is still alive, crude, and vicious in its expression. In Backlash, Yancy expands upon the original article and chronicles the ensuing controversy as he seeks to understand what it was about the op-ed that created so much rage among so many white readers.  Buffalo soldiers directed by Charles Haid Danny Glover stars in this historical epic of former slaves turned United States Army recruits--the Buffalo Soldiers. Freed by the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862, many ex-slaves head west in search of a new life far from Southern oppression. In 1866, a year after the end of the Civil War, the U.S. Army enlists black men to fight Native Americans on the Western frontier. Nicknamed "Buffalo Soldiers" by the Plains Indians, these African-American troops also string miles of telegraph wire, escort settlers, cattle and railroad crews through the hostile West and patrol the wild United States-Mexican border in this moving drama that chronicles an untold, exciting part of United States history.  Crossing Division Street: an oral history of the African-American community in Orlando by Benjamin Brotemarkle This book includes an overview of the people, institutions, and events that shaped the establishment, growth and history of the African-American community in Orlando. We examine the creation of the neighborhood's educational centers, places of worship, and businesses, and the irony of how desegregation inadvertently led to the decline of the community. Significant instances of racial unrest in Orlando that are often overlooked are detailed in this manuscript. Suggested by Rich Gause, Research & Information Services
 Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the dawn of a new America by Gilbert King In 1949, Florida's orange industry was booming, and citrus barons got rich on the backs of cheap Jim Crow labor. To maintain order and profits, they turned to Willis V. McCall, a violent sheriff who ruled Lake County with murderous resolve.  Hidden in Plain View:  the secret story of quilts and the underground railroad by Jacqueline L. Tobin and Raymond G. Dobard The fascinating story of a friendship, a lost tradition, and an incredible discovery, revealing how enslaved men and women made encoded quilts and then used them to navigate their escape on the Underground Railroad.  In Hidden in Plain View, historian Jacqueline Tobin and scholar Raymond Dobard offer the first proof that certain quilt patterns, including a prominent one called the Charleston Code, were, in fact, essential tools for escape along the Underground Railroad. In 1993, historian Jacqueline Tobin met African American quilter Ozella Williams amid piles of beautiful handmade quilts in the Old Market Building of Charleston, South Carolina.  Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison A first novel by an unknown writer, it remained on the bestseller list for sixteen weeks, won the National Book Award for fiction, and established Ralph Ellison as one of the key writers of the century. INCOMING TRANSMISSION -
As many of you are aware, we’ve been staring down massive multiversal change for the last seven months, which began with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s attempt to create a criminal detention facility known as PLEASANT HILL. 
This began what we have come to refer as the MULTIVERSAL RUPTURE. The Rupture is code for what’s actually a series of holes and fissures in the multiverse. Initially, they began as phenomenon’s linked to certain individuals who had been a part of the reality warping event. Some were instantaneous; the holes that were attached to them allowed matter from other realities to come through and effectively rewrote their entire personalities as the variants overpowered them. This was observed in CMOON and YBELOVA. For others, the change was slower and happened over time. We observed this in subjects such as CBARTON, CAMAQUELIN and KBISHOP. Records of all observational interviews post Pleasant Hill can be found in the S.H.I.E.L.D. file for ANALYSIS & ASSESSMENTS, clearance level six. The changes are both physical and mental in nature.
What we’ve now called the transition / merge is coming to a head. Even those who were not initially altered will be completely submerged by the end of 2/1/20221. This transformation is pinpointed to occur at approximately 23:59. People will not be able to feel a difference when the time comes, and the new memories should be completely comprehensive.
S.H.I.E.L.D. has taken the liberty for mapping out some of the following merges. It appears all mutants will be based in what Wanda Maximoff and Stephen Strange have called “Earth-616″. Other prominent realities include “Earth-1610″, which was once erased during the Incursions, and Earth and a new one, “Earth-12703″. We apologize for the fear and inconvenience, as foolish as that sounds. Please do not do anything dangerous in the next few hours. Again, this should be a seemless transition.

It was a few days later, Bryce and I were making diner together and joking around. “omg are you dumb?” I exclaimed when Bryce spilled the boiling water on himself. I quickly grabbed a towel to help him dry himself. “fuck that hurts” Bryce said, we suddenly heard someone say, “what hurts?” we both turned around and saw Montgomery standing in the kitchen.
“hey Monty, what are you doing here?” Bryce asked while cooling his burn, “long story, who’s that?” he asked looking at me up and down. “I’m Megan, the drunk girl from last party who you played beerpong with” I said smiling, only now realizing how pretty he is.
“oh, that’s right I remember, you suck” he laughed while leaning over the kitchen counters “what are you guys making?” he asked, “well we’re making spaghetti but it’s mostly Megan tho” Bryce answered laughing. We all talked for a bit and got to know each other better when we finished cooking dinner, Bryce called our parents for dinner and then we all ate.
Monty decided to stay the night and we ended up inviting the rest of the group,

Jessica: sure, Justin and I are down
Jessica: do we need to dress up or?
Me: no, I’m also just in my sweats and a hoodie lmao
Zach: I’m busy but maybe another time
Monty: alright, Scott? Sheri? Jeff? Chloe? Wbu
 We waited a few minutes until everyone had responded, Jeff and Zach couldn’t make it but the rest of the group did.
 Justin and Jessica arrived first, they greeted everyone and sat down on the couch across from me and Monty, Bryce was in the kitchen grabbing some food and sodas while the four of us just talked. After a while everyone was there, and we were all just talking. Sheri and I were caught up in a conversation about cheerleading when Scott got tired and wanted to go home. Him and Sheri were back together so they both left. Chloe and Bryce went upstairs a long time ago, so it was just the four of us again.
 “school’s starting in a week” Justin sighed, I laughed “is liberty so bad?”. Jessica smiled “no because I know for sure everyone will like you”, “you’re the sweetest” I said laughing while blowing her a kiss. Jessica snorted and looked at Justin who pulled Jessica closer to him “back off Megan, she’s mine” he said jokingly. “she’s right tho, everyone will like you” Monty said smiling at you, you smiled back when justin shouted “SIMP”. We all laughed. After a while justin and Jessica went home and me and Montgomery just talked for a while and laughed.
 We were talking about baseball when we suddenly realized it was 3 am, I told him I was heading to bed and he probably should to, he said he’ll go upstairs in a minute. I nodded and gave him a smile, just when I was about to leave the living room I said this “you know you can always come to me when theres something”, he smiled and gave me a quick thanks before I walked away and went to sleep.
  It was the Friday before school started and me and jess where hanging out and laying on my bed, I was scrolling through Instagram when Jessica suddenly sat up. “we should throw a party” she said excited “my parents are away for the weekend”.  I agreed with her and we started to text a bunch of people, we made sure everything was ready and then we had diner and starting to dress up.
 The party started at 8 pm and it only was 6 pm so we took the time. I was wearing shorts with a tube top and jess was wearing a short dress. “I’m so totally gonna get laid tonight” Jessica suddenly said, “I haven’t seen Justin since that night at your place” I snorted, she continued “you should hook up with someone” I quickly shook my head “no way, I barely know the guys from school”.
“hmm we’ll see” Jessica said, you rolled your eyes and smiled.
 Everyone was having fun at the party, me and Jeff where talking when Sheri came up to us. “have you guys seen Scott?” she askes trying to walk in a straight line. “yes, he’s outside, I’ll go with you” I answered, Jeff and I said goodbye and then Sheri and I headed outside. We found Scott watching a beerpong game, Sheri walked towards him, the game was Troy against Montgomery. They were about to start the game when Troy saw me, “the winner get’s to kiss Megan” he shouted, Monty laughed “deal” and then he winked at me. I snorted and took a sip of my drink waiting for the game to finish.
 Halfway through Bryce came outside, “hey Megan, what’s up?” he said when he came behind me, I turned around “hey Bryce, well I was watching Troy and Monty play beerpong, troy decided that the winner gets to kiss me” Bryce laughed and watched the game with me.  
 They both had just one cup standing, it was Troy’s turn, and everyone was shouting, he raised his hand and threw the ball, he missed. Then it was Monty’s turn “Megan, this one is for you” he smirked, he threw the ball, and it was right in Troy his cup.
 His friends cheered and he walked towards me, I put my drink on a table next to me and snorted. “someone looks happy” I said. “just shut up already” Monty said before he kissed me, I was shocked at first, but I then kissed him back. “victory” he yelled afterwards, before he walked away, he smacked my ass and I laughed. I grabbed my drink and enjoyed the rest of the night just talking to some friends and having random talks with random people.

The Pursuit of Happiness
The most iconic line of the Declaration of Independence of the United States stands out for a reason, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." (The Declaration of Independence, 1776). The right to pursue happiness, and the right to be happy are fundamentally different. While there are infinite theories about what constitutes happiness and how to achieve that happiness, it is not society's role to give each happiness. In Dylan Matthews' article "The Case Against Equality of Opportunity," besides missing the point of Equality of Opportunity overall, Matthews misunderstands the pursuit of happiness with happiness itself.
The purpose of equality of opportunity is to remove discrimination because of a specific trait one has, such as race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy status, transgender status, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. If this idea were universally applied, unquestionably, that would be the ideal goal of equality of opportunity. This notion is rooted in an idea crystalized in the article "I, Pencil," with the line "[h]ave faith that free men and women will respond to the Invisible Hand." (Read, 1964). However, because the United States, and indeed any endeavor of man, is not perfect, there are additional barriers that might crop up, where further intervention may be necessary. The difficulty is, instead of expanding government control to the point of legislating parental actions, such as Matthews falsely claims would be required, the right method of removing these barriers would look similar to school choice. Instead of forcing inner-city children to go to their neighborhood school, which may have inadequate funding and is academically lagging, families should have the opportunity to send their children to any nearby school. Michael Sandel offers a helpful look at this situation when he explores a homeless man sleeping on the street, "[i]n order to know whether his choice reflects a preference for sleeping out of doors or an inability to afford an apartment, we need to know something about his circumstances. Is he doing this freely or out of necessity?" (Sandel, pg. 46, 2009). By implementing school choice and allowing the student's family to pick, we would then learn the family's preference and what they choose to pursue happiness.
The number of times Matthews confuses Equality of Opportunity and Equality of Outcome is quite interesting for someone who later argues for the implementation of economic Equality of Outcome. Matthews provides what he believes is an example of Equality of Opportunity in two families that teach their children different trades during their childhood. A child knowing how to play the violin is an outcome of the way their parents raised them. This sequence of events has nothing to do with Equality of Opportunity; the Equality of Opportunity discussion would begin if that family were denied a violin's purchase because of their race, religion, and so forth. These two families are enjoying their right to pursue happiness, which is teaching their children a trade.
Economic mobility is presented as a method of measuring equality of opportunity. However, this is merely introduced as a strawman argument used to reject the premise of equality of opportunity as a whole, using the logic "if we cannot measure it, what is the point in trying to obtain it?" Which is, by itself, a flawed notion. There is no quantifiable measurement for happiness, yet most people strive to live a happy life. Matthews goes on to say it would be "madness" to have proper intergeneration elasticity; he justifiably applauds the notion of the lower class being able to reach the middle and upper class but rejects the idea that the upper class could fall to the lower class, citing a father banishing his son from his inheritance (Matthews, 2015). When discussing economics, intergenerational elasticity should be viewed in terms of economic choices, not familial ones. Matthew's example of Megan Ellison can be used as a hypothetical of what could happen with the upper class falling to the lower class. Ellison used her inheritance on filmmaking, as Matthews points out. If Ellison's movies failed and lost all of her money, she would have taken a financial risk and lost, sending her to the middle or even lower class. This is what a free society looks like; this is not madness. Sometimes one fails in their pursuit of happiness. One could argue that the risk of failure is what makes a success so sweet.
Equality of Opportunity is the best solution for a world where people want what is fair, not what is equal, and as Dr. Paul Bloom points out, this is the case in the United States (Bloom, 2015). Matthews explores the idea that Equality of Outcomes will help all, even those who have metaphorically lost the lottery of birth; "equality of outcomes would also help these poor, smart strivers. The difference is that while equality of outcomes promises gains for every poor person, equality of opportunity explicitly leaves some people out" (Matthews, 2015). Matthews leaves out a few things here. First, he fails to remind us that by equalizing the outcomes, the upper class are being heavily taxed, potentially enough to move them out of their current income bracket, which, as he mentioned, would be madness. Second, once basic needs are met, giving someone additional money will inherently not improve their happiness. You cannot merely redistribute wealth and expect an increase in society's overall morale; the pursuit of happiness is from where that comes. It is also interesting to question what outcomes Matthews intends to equalize. Should we only equalize economic outcomes? What about gender distributions in career fields? After all, there is a consensus about a lack of women in STEM fields. Then the question arises, should we mandate equal outcomes in all career fields? No one is going to argue we need more women working in coal mines or on oil rigs. As soon as we begin to pursue Equality of Outcomes, we abandon both fairness and the pursuit of happiness.  
I respect Matthew's desire to help the poor. My concerns are his methods for doing so and what appears to me is either a fundamental misunderstanding of Equality of Opportunity or a willful misrepresentation grounded in his belief that Equality of Outcome is a better alternative. The Founding Fathers began this country with a declaration of war rooted in equality and freedom, explicitly stating the right to pursue happiness. The most effective means of pursuing happiness is giving all individuals equal opportunity under the law.
