misao review!
Tumblr media
going into misao, i had a lot of misconceptions and worries about the "totally unforgiving" game over system, but came out the other side like... completely obsessed with it. i can imagine finding myself super frustrated with this game as a teenager, but as an adult it became a lot easier to map out the patterns where things were probably going to kill me and just quick save before embracing the instant-kill HAHA
i think the protagonist, misao herself, and the death system were my favorite parts of the game. the story itself wasn't too compelling, aside from making me shake my fist at the screen and howl because misao just has the worst week at school EVER and everything she did was more or less justified and fair LOLOL. the teacher was SCUUUUUZZY scuzzy. that felt a little prolonged, but i'm glad in the true end he doesn't really get redeemed and reincarnated... only the best part of him left was allowed to pass on (the part that spared a helpless dying cat).
so basically, while the story didn't feel like it was crazy innovative (though, again, i'm playing in 2023) it just felt fun and almost cozy (???)... it was a fun few hours of running around with silly gags and a protagonist who was totally weird and memorable and i'm such a sucker for stories where the protagonist befriends the "monster" T_T
definitely going to have to play the definitive version soon!!

RPG Review: Misao Definitive Edition
Tumblr media
Ah, Misao. A cornerstone of 2010s rpgmaker games. Horror, parody, a genuinely fun vibe that is so derivative yet so distinctive and memorable. A remastered edition was published on Steam in 2017, and I'm here to go over the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Note: I am reviewing the remastered edition, not the 2011 edition; however part of the review will be comparing the two.
The Good:
The graphics on this game were probably the biggest upgrade from the original. It is still recognizably Misao, but the quality is clearer, the characters are more detailed and look like video game characters instead of dolls, and the backgrounds are simultaneously less cluttered and more detailed where it counts. Beyond that, there are the items to collect. I am, admittedly, ambivalent on the change from body parts to personal items, but it does provide a greater cohesion with the story. There are other minor changes (such as Aki hiding in a bear suit instead of a corpse), but nothing that detracted from overall experience. In fact, the updated game is well worth it for the increased detail and streamlined concepts.
I really enjoyed the differences between male and female Aki. Female Aki is the 'true' game experience, but playing male Aki highlights how unhinged the female version is. Like seriously, if you play the female version first and then the male (which is the best order) you feel like you just woke up the day after the purge. Male Aki is so normal compared to female Aki and it really comes off well both as two distinctive versions and as a humorous comparison. I played male Aki after playing female Aki and felt like a 22 year old coming to grips with the homoerotic friendship I had in school that was detrimental to my mental health. I felt like I had finished reading a manga about toxic yuri. I felt like watching Jennifer's Body. Female Aki is psychotic.
The Bad:
After talking about how great the new graphic are comparatively, this is going to feel kind of nitpicky. I actually think the older graphic lend a certain atmosphere that the new graphics don't quite capture. Don't get me wrong, there are certain elements I much appreciate, such as the floor tiles not being so busy and the character sprites not looking so wooden or having doll proportions. The rooms (if not the halls) themselves just look better. It's just that, despite all the demons and blood and general 'spooky' nonsense, I don't feel like I'm in an underworld demon realm like I did with the old graphics. It was a charm reminiscent of crt tvs and atari games that is becoming increasingly rare in modern game graphics.
The Ugly:
I hate the extra endings. Not the bad and true endings, but the after-game ending where you go save everyone from hell and help them reincarnate. Some were good, some were ok, but the teacher's story put such a bad taste in my mouth. For one, I was genuinely uninterested in his story or what made him decide to be a predator on his students. For two, honestly, this is a game that largely rests on being the video game equivalent of a bad haunted house. The teacher's story is the one element that doesn't fit the vibe of the rest of the game well, and that makes it stick out like a sore thumb. Honestly, I get what they were going for, but its clunky at best. I liked the entire rest of the game until this part which made me almost not play the male run.
Summary:
This is a fun game! Its not perfect, and personal preference will decide which version of the game you like best, but it absolutely holds up as a remake and is just as silly to play through as the other versions. There's a ton of theorizing to be done between this game, the earlier versions, and Mad Father (another game by the same dev which is referenced a lot in Misao). If I ever feel like playing all of those games back to back I might make my own list, but its fun to find what you can and come up with your own theories! Personally, my favorite part was collecting all the different ways to die like I was filling out my pokemon index, haha

In my country version of the game there was a mistake in translation that led people to believe that Kudoh was Misao's biological brother. Translation was fixed in definitive edition

Saw a blorbo aita, who's mary and what media is she from?
ooh! mary is from ib, one of the most well-known rpgmaker horror games up there with ones like mad father, ao oni, misao, the witch's house, etc etc! you play as a young girl called ib who is trapped in another world after entering a strange painting in an art gallery, where all the paintings have come to life! i've always really loved this game and a couple years ago a remake was put on steam, so i'd say that's the definitive if you wanna give it a go ^^ though of course the original version is free

❔ for any of them, ✔️+🤝+🌌 for Orthopox, 🎂 for Cakey, ✖️ for 1
❔- I found out the correct definition of kin (its not the tiktok and pinterest version i can tell you that much although there is nothing wrong with using that term in that way if you clarify, its not like IRL where you can't use that term if you don't have psychosis) and then i looked at the "kins" i still felt very close to and went "do i hate your fandoms way of treating you because its just bad or because it feels like an attack against me?" for 1, Misao and Penny that was an easy answer, YES. (being portrayed as an abuser/forgiving your abuser is bad but as an abuse victim and selfhood of misao it felt so much more like they were siding with MY abuser and telling me I was the wrong one)
✔️- For the most part yes, at least from what I remember. My memories are not at all clear (and they're mostly being unlocked by people in a discord server i lurk in.) 🤝- Psychological like all the others as far as I know. I'm still learning but I do know i'm not really a spiritual person, I do believe people can be reincarnated but i'd have to do more research before anything is set in stone terminology-wise. 🌌- Occasionally I'll feel a heavy weight, or the stark opposite, on the sides of my head. Mostly when I'm in a shift but other times i'd just get headaches and I wouldn't know why. I think I know now.
🎂- Sprinkles, because 90% of the time they don't taste like anything. And Tim Horton's doughnuts, oddly enough, maybe just because I like their doughnuts idk.
✖️- Well I was in a relationship with 8 for starters lmao. It was very canon compliant tho.

could u recommend some steam horror games!! (specifically retro indie games)
yeah of course! I can’t remember 100% all of these games, but many of them contain common triggers (particularly body horror, suicide, and sexual assault)  so please be aware of that!! Also, because a lot of these are 15+ years old, they contain racism and homophobia typical of older content, unfortunately.
-The Penumbra Collector’s pack ($9.99, 2007) comes with Black Plague and Overture, two of my all time favorite horror games. Similar to Amnesia, just a very back-to-basics survival horror game. Has some of my personal favorite twists and scares!
-The Still Life pack ($14.99, 2002) is a series of point and click horror games about solving murders. The games themselves are far from perfect, but they have a great vibe and atmosphere.
-World of Horror ($14.99, 2019) is a game done in the style of retro horror manga. It’s gorgeous and super fun, but still in early access! It feels like you’re walking around a Junji Ito manga :’)
-The Witch’s House (free for lq ver, $14.99 for hq ver, 2012) is a brilliant RPG horror game done in the style of many, much older horror rpgs. Steam also has some other classic horror RPGs that I’d definitely check out, as well!
-Corpse Party ($14.99, 2016 rerelease of 1996 game). I know I mention this one on every list but it’s one of my all time favorites!! It’s a retro horror rpg with some really genuinely disturbing and thought-provoking content.
-Misao Definitive Edition ($4.99, 2011) A retro-styled horror RPG that has some interesting twists. A shorter version of the game is also offered for free.
-Condemned:Criminal Origins ($14.95, 2006) I haven’t played this one yet, but I’ve heard great things about it. A horror shooter game where you solve supernatural murders.
-Harvester ($5.99, 1996) “The most violent adventure game of all time” is kind of an oversell, haha, but it lives up to that title in some ways!! It’s a great classic horror/gore game, especially if you’re into vintage games.
-Saya No Uta: Song of Saya ($14.99, 2019 rerelease of 2003 game) is known as one of the darkest mainstream visual novels. It’s about a student who begins to see everything as flesh and gore, except for a beautiful monster named Saya.
-I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream ($5.99, 1995) Is a tale about outsmarting an evil computer that utilizes a lot of psychological concepts. It’s an awesome game that I’d strongly recommend.
-Togainu No Chi: Lost Blood ($14.99, 2020 expanded release of 2005 game) Another visual novel known for its extremely dark content, togainu no chi is an “erotic” horror story about a young man surviving in the wasteland left of Japan after WWIII. Also, I want to warn that this game contains EXTREMELY graphic depictions of sexual assault, and includes many topics that are often seen as too intense (even for the horror genre), so please be wary going into this game.
Of course, Steam also has some classics like Resident Evil, FEAR, The Crooked Man, etc.! I didn’t include those, just in case you’d already been through them! I hope that helps! <3

high five on rpg maker games! why would anyone assume i'm downloading a titty game if i'm physically capable of downloading crooked man, misao or mad father instead. it's called having priorities
My worst nemesis on this is definitely Yume 2kki, each time a new version came out the struggle would most likely repeat itself .-.

It really is interesting to see the differences between the Misao: Definitive version and the Original. I wonder if the Steam Mad Father release is similar.

Hey, so I've played Misao: Definitive Edition recently and oh boy, it deserves much more attention. But right now I want to talk about someone particular: my sweet boy Akito. Like, he was the sweetest cinnamon roll in the original game but this one JUST DOUBLED IT AND I'M DYING! As you can already tell, his post is basically Akito appreciation post because he needs more love. Also, if you haven’t played or watched Akito’s version of the story, DO IT. It’s totally worth it.
Tumblr media
Some things did not change about him since the original: like when he sees Yoshino’s dead body he apologies or when Ayaka is looking through Mr. Pedo’s desk he shows a bit more concern for her than Aki. However, there is one huge difference between these versions that made me like him even more.
Let’s go to the final choice. I really like how the developer changed the last part where you have to choose who'll be the last victim. In the original Akito can’t kill neither Mr. Creepy-Face nor Tohma so it’s Miss Library or «another him» who kills them. But this time no one helps him and he can't bring himself to kill anybody either.
Tumblr media
So what does he do? HE'S ASKING MISAO TO LET HIM FREAKING SACRAFICE HIMSELF FOR PEOPLE WHO AREN'T EVEN HIS FRIENDS!
Tumblr media
And look, he even thinks he’s as guilty as the others because he’s never tried to stop the bulling.
Tumblr media
And then he explains that he can become the sacrifice because he doesn’t have anyone to return to and it won’t be that much of a deal if he died.
Tumblr media
LIKE. BOI. That just makes me want to hug this little young man and say that it's not true. It also shows kind of connection to Misao, they both felt they were not needed.
And when the school is flooded with evil spirits Akito is trying to calm everyone down and makes them work together. And it actually works! Isn’t he amazing?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Too bad this didn’t lead to anything good in the end but oh well, the crazy teacher kind of deserved it.
Tumblr media
OMG he even blames himself for not rescuing another person in time! EVEN THOUGH IT WASN’T EVEN HIS FAULT!
This is the biggest difference between Aki and Akito in this game. And I’m so glad the final choice was presented so differently in remastered version. It realy fits the character. Also, it’s a minor thing, but look: he doesn’t even want to hit this little plant thingy because he knows it’ll be painful. It’ll explode in the next 10 seconds but he still can’t bring himself to hurt any living thing!
Tumblr media
In conclusion, I like playing as Aki: just seeing how carefree she is considering all the crap that’s going on is kind of funny. But it makes me extremely sad that so many people choose to play as Aki only and don’t even give the pure boy a chance. It’s so freaking sad how unpopular he is.

My Reactions to Shin Kyoto-hen with screenshots
(spoiler alert: it was really wtf)
Tumblr media
“Oh, what a cute pigeon!”
Tumblr media
“What is this photoshop???” The tree has 500% more detail than Kenshin who looks like he was copy pasted. Who is the real main character here?
Tumblr media
1. Kenshin just took out Chou’s eye with a sheath. Brutal.
2. This is an accurate representation of how I felt about the Shishio/Yumi sex scene. Too much information that no one asked for, show! Where is the brain bleach when I need it...
Tumblr media
“Shit gets meta.”
Basically, any character could ask that question at any point of this OVA, I know I did it. The story is all messed up. They took out important things, they added irrelevant things, they changed, cut and altered a lot, so I’m amazed that the end result was still watchable. This is the worst version of Kyoto arc ever.
Good moment:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Good timing, Misao!”
As an aside, I do appreciate the brutality, blood etc, at least that’s one thing they didn’t take away from the story in this adaptation.
In the second part of the OVA, I gave up on taking screens to get faster through this trainwreck. I can say that the unironically best part of it was Saito vs Shishio fight and it was still so short.
And then we have THIS. Shishio’s defeat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
W.T.F?!!!
Kenshin just killed the guy with a pommel hit. A pommel hit.
Let’s ignore for a moment how grotesque and comedic this looks and that is a completely unfitting fate for Shishio to end up with his head split like a watermelon. What’s most important is that this should definitely count as Kenshin breaking his vow not to kill. Yet OVA never acknowledges this in any way. What’s their defense? That Kenshin didn’t use the blade to kill so it’s okay? That he didn’t know Shishio’s head would do that after getting hit? Any kind of defense for this is going to sound stupid. I can accept Kenshin casually maiming his opponents, but not straight out murder.
Anyway, the last absurd of this adaptation was that Aoshi was the final boss and he took another pommel hit to the head, but instead of insta-kill, he magically got his common sense back.
To round this up, there were some positive details and changes included, but they couldn’t make up for the overall badness.
Tumblr media
“Well, at least Kenshin is still pretty.”
4/10, only for hardcore fans
