I did it! I completed this year’s National Model Painting Month horse!

Glæsilegur is Breyer’s porcelain Icelandic Horse, released in 1992 (the last picture shows the original finish.) Sadly he’s not likely to ever be released in plastic or resin, and it took me years to find one that was scuffed up enough to justify customizing him. I made him over into a soft dapple gray--he’s the reason I’ve been making so many dappled models as of late, to make sure I was really prepared for him. I am just totally in love with how he turned out!

Presenting, the Ineffable Horsebands!

A few weeks ago I decided that I’d be customising some model horses into everyone’s favourite ineffable duo as part of an annual painting challenge called NaMoPaiMo. It isn’t a competition, it’s just a fun community event, and I’ve been taking part for years. Anyway, the important thing is that I had way too much fun turning Aziraphale and Crowley into horses. (and yes, a crack fic explaining precisely why they’re horses is already in progress 🙈😂) Also, because apparently I’m a glutton for punishment, I spent far too long faffing about with fine wire, pliers and resin to make Crowley a pair of sunglasses. Obviously the legs of the frames wouldn’t actually work in reality but he’s a demon horse, so physics is optional. I didn’t have any patterned ribbon small enough for a teeny tiny bow tie for Aziraphale so I improvised and painted tartan stripes on some scrap fabric. It’s a little bigger than I’d have liked but it’s stupidly cute so it works. 😂 There’s also a couple of nods to their celestial/diabolical forms too if you look closely. 👀

So, may I present Aziraphale, aka Azirafoal, the Principalomino or Principalipony. Known for being so heartmeltingly sweet that you feel obliged to give him all of the treats and carrots and biscuits he desires. (That said, he would 100% yeet a child if they annoyed him. 😇🐴🪽 …and Crowley, aka Crowleypony, known for Cantering Vaguely Downwards, biting anyone who looks at him wrong and destroying rugs and expensive tack just because he can and it annoys people. 😈🐴🔥 I already have some ideas for other characters too, halp. 🙈 Is this how I’m going to stay sane until S3 comes out?!

And then his dapples laid down, plus his dark points blocked in.

Many layers of oils later, his dapples are sunk into his coat. Then it was on to details, and this is the final result:

NaMoPaiMo Party

I did it!!!! My NaMoPaiMo '24 model is done! Ms. Understood here gave me quite a fight--I kept breaking her resculpted back left leg while prepping her (we can rebuild her. we have the technology.), redid her ears twice, had to strip the paint due to bad primer, and by the time I was halfway through painting her realized there were a few places where I could have sanded her epoxy a little more smoothly. But little imperfections and all, she turned out STUNNING. My goal this time around was to get out of my comfort zone and start with a non-white primer (I chose red), and holy moly, the DEPTH on this black is so much better for it--that colorway is definitely staying in rotation, especially for Arabians.

It's day 8, and I've put down two more layers of oils. Above he looked like a flaming hot cheeto... much to red and orange. So for layer three I added raw umber to the mix.

I'm hoping to add another layer tomorrow.

It Twas A Good Try

Okay, so this was an awesome package to receive. It’s Van Gogh, the medallion for NaMoPaiMo. This is my first medallion, and it’s even more awesome that my first one is tied to NaMoPaiMo. In model horse world, the month of February is National Model Painting Month or NaMoPaiMo. It’s a project where participants start the month with a blank model and end with a painted one. It’s meant to be a creative exercise like NaNoWriMo or Inktober. I’ve participated a couple times, but this year isn’t looking great schedule wise, so I am not planning on signing up this year.

Part of the process is to post a selfie with your blank model at the start, and the finished piece at the end. This year, a lot of people are posting images of dolls with miniature models as a joke, and I finally saw enough that I decide it was time to go dig up a little horse for Link. The model he is holding is Tennytoo by Maggie Jenner Bennett.

Anyway, you know he is getting distracted on some side quest instead of finishing that horse, despite being the biggest horse girl in Hyrule.

I DID IT!!! I finished my NaMoPaiMo horse in a time crunch but she's done! Made me want to beat my head into a wall more than once but she was a lot of fun for my first model
