Presenting, the Ineffable Horsebands!
A few weeks ago I decided that I’d be customising some model horses into everyone’s favourite ineffable duo as part of an annual painting challenge called NaMoPaiMo. It isn’t a competition, it’s just a fun community event, and I’ve been taking part for years. Anyway, the important thing is that I had way too much fun turning Aziraphale and Crowley into horses. (and yes, a crack fic explaining precisely why they’re horses is already in progress 🙈😂) Also, because apparently I’m a glutton for punishment, I spent far too long faffing about with fine wire, pliers and resin to make Crowley a pair of sunglasses. Obviously the legs of the frames wouldn’t actually work in reality but he’s a demon horse, so physics is optional. I didn’t have any patterned ribbon small enough for a teeny tiny bow tie for Aziraphale so I improvised and painted tartan stripes on some scrap fabric. It’s a little bigger than I’d have liked but it’s stupidly cute so it works. 😂 There’s also a couple of nods to their celestial/diabolical forms too if you look closely. 👀
If you check out #ineffablehorsebands on my Instagram you can see all my WIP photos and stuff if you want to see how they were customised, and while we’re on the subject, #lynkhartart for my GO paintings as well 👀)
So, may I present Aziraphale, aka Azirafoal, the Principalomino or Principalipony. Known for being so heartmeltingly sweet that you feel obliged to give him all of the treats and carrots and biscuits he desires. (That said, he would 100% yeet a child if they annoyed him. 😇🐴🪽 …and Crowley, aka Crowleypony, known for Cantering Vaguely Downwards, biting anyone who looks at him wrong and destroying rugs and expensive tack just because he can and it annoys people. 😈🐴🔥 I already have some ideas for other characters too, halp. 🙈 Is this how I’m going to stay sane until S3 comes out?!

'I don't want a throne' I've been in an unexpected art mood recently, and after seeing a particularly emotive gif on tumblr of a very emotional Loki from the finale this week, I felt inspiration strike. I've drawn the wonderful Tom Hiddleston a couple of times in the past but I think this is definitely my best interpretation to date. I absolutely love the depth of emotion he brings to Loki, and this moment in the final episode was beautifully raw and heartbreaking. Usually when I do portraits I do lineart first, then essentially 'colour it in' but this time around I tried to block in everything without lines which was really freeing! I started off with a dark canvas which was great fun to work on. I'm so glad I took the plunge and got Clip Studio Pro - it's easily the best art program I've ever used, I absolutely adore it! Unusually for me I drew the entire thing in around 4-5 hours in the middle of the day - I'm normally only ever in Art Mode at night, so it's weird seeing it finished in daylight and the same day I started it! XD

I drew this in Clip Studio Paint whilst watching the post campaign wrap-up at some ungodly hour of the morning last night (thanks timezones >.<) It’s based off a scene from a shadowgast fic I’m working on, set during Essek and Caleb’s post-finale trip to Aeor. I’ll link it once it’s done but for now, have some art and a meagre excerpt. :3 I love me some sad wizards but they'll be happy eventually, don't worry.
‘The decision is made. A moment later it’s all over, and as the crackling flames die down and the tattered remnants of what was once hope fall to ashes around him, Caleb Widogast drops to his knees. At first he is silent, holding everything back as he has done for so many years, until with one shuddering exhale, his body is racked with paralysing sobs. He grieves for his parents, and for himself; for his childhood and the life he should have had, and now never could.
Essek sits with him until the worst of it has passed, a comforting arm around his neck; an embrace into which Caleb gratefully sinks. They stay there together until his eyes are empty of tears and his throat is raw from screaming.
He doesn’t speak about it.
He can’t. Not yet.’

I don’t physically paint very often (as I’m always paranoid I’ll mess it up so the obvious solution is not to do it at all 🙄) but l had a huge craving to try some yesterday, and well, some shadowgast happened. I haven’t used gouache pretty much ever, so I’m beyond pleased with how these turned out! I think Caleb turned out the best as I painted him last and had got more used to the paint, but I do still love Essek.

I found a great drawing prompt list the other day called 'Dungeons and Inkwells' where you roll dice to get an interesting combination of D&D race and classes. I don't know if I'll manage another monthly challenge any time soon but I thought I'd roll up a couple of possible ideas just in case inspiration struck and well, it did. As soon as I rolled 'Warforged Druid' I just knew exactly what to draw; a long abandoned construct, lost to the elements until one day, decades after the war it was created to fight in, it wakes up and finds that the plants that have colonised its body have imbued it with powers. I can totally see myself using them in a campaign one day if my current characters snuff it! XD Drawn entirely in Clip Studio Paint, pose reference from 'Magic Poser Web'

As some of you may recall from my manic and sleep deprived stories on Instagram, the second campaign of Critical Role came to a close last week and honestly, I’m still coming to terms with it. The ragtag bunch of misfits that are the Mighty Nein have given me so much joy over the last three years and while I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next in C3, I’m really going to miss them. In the week before the final episode I went into a creative maelstrom like I haven’t experienced in a long time. I wrote an 11k fanfic, started what turned out to be a 4k essay on Caleb and Essek’s intertwining narratives, and began this bit of artwork. Then the finale happened and I just have so many feelings to process. 😩 My favourite ship went canon at last and everyone got their happy endings and just, ugh, I love them all so much.
Anyway, this little moment at the end of the penultimate episode stuck with me, so I just knew I had to draw it. Veth didn’t turn out quite as well as I hoped, but I’m pleased with everything else, especially Essek.
(I used Clip Studio Pro if anyone’s wondering)
So yeah, don’t mind me, just crying over fictional characters as usual 🙃

‘Grown in a tank along with a few hundred other genetically engineered Pilot drones, Kes Varin was quite literally born to fly. Designed to mentally sync with the AI and flight systems of a ship, his kind were integral to the continued success of the Saranian Syndicate; the totalitarian corporate rulers of the galaxy. Brainwashed by the Syndicate's training programmes, Kes had no knowledge of life outside of the ships he was stationed on, and didn’t even have his own name at first, just the serial code on the back of his data port – KE5VRN. All that changed one day when his ship was attacked and he found himself in a crashed escape pod, alone for the first time in his life and with no idea what to do next…’ For those of you who've been following me elsewhere for years, you'll probably recognise this guy as one of my dearest OCs, Kes Varin. I've drawn him a number of times, but my skill level was never quite good enough to fully capture him as I see him in my head. I think he's finally as close to real as I'm ever going to get him, and I'm really pleased with myself. (I've been working on a 6th scale figure of him, and based this portrait off it - it's really handy having a 360 degree reference now!) I've been having great fun with Clip Studio Paint, and found some new brushes that really helped me to 'loosen up' when it comes to shading, as well as finding an auto action so I could finally try out that fancy RGB shift thing I've been admiring on other people's work for years! I've got a whole novel's worth of plot for Kes to hopefully explore one day, but so far most of it remains in my head rather than typed out unfortunately. 😅
