Myth: Polyamory is just a new fad

Only through the evolution of family structures, agriculture, and industrialization, did the idea of one partner for each person become the ideal. Still, around the world, many tribal communities practice many forms of polyamory, including polyandry, where one woman marries multiple men.

Polyamory is not immature, cheating, miserable, or a newfangled idea. It is also not the right choice for everyone. Each person must explore and understand what works best for them. This can include having a primary partner plus casual partners, allowing for occasional sexual hookups, having no primary partner but many equal partners, and a wide range of options in between. All of these relationship styles can be good, healthy, and long lasting. No matter what kind of relationship you choose, make sure you are mindful to embrace the love that is right for you, not just one that adheres to the status quo.

sometimes i wonder if im experiencing fandom burnout

like im still enjoying hololive but i guess the spark is gone, like the novelty of it all and yeah things change over time absolutely this fandom doesn’t feel the same as it felt back in january of 2021 when i found them for the first time and immediately tumbled head first into the rabbit hole

it’s probably the nostalgia though

like the memories of watching ina play hollow knight and monster hunter when i should’ve been paying attention during zoom classes (maybe that’s why i’m failing calc now) and starting to dip my toes into ao3 and listening to gura’s moon song cover for the first time and takamori being The holoen ship of all time (i still enjoy takamori but im more of a polymyth enjoyer) and watching that one takamori karaoke and bawling my eyes out and the april fools stream when holomyth debuted their smol live2Ds and and and oh god can you believe i’ve been in this fandom for almost 2 years now that is a LONG time jesus criminy christ

chapter 1 of 10: a voice

She is to care for the dead, Calliope knew that much. She couldn't remember anything before she had received that first message, only that, as soon as she started receiving them, they wouldn't stop. Little urges and ticks would leave her grasping at her side for something that was never there. Tiny wisps of words would make her head ache and split at the most minor sound. 

"A new town," they would say, "A way to find something important, a way to meet me," 

That was when they were quiet. Their voice became less and less weak over time, each word becoming less of a struggle to force out of their metaphorical lungs. Calliope had taken to calling them the works of the devil, only receiving a squawk of resentment in return. Each day she lived out wandering from wild plains to thick forests, not remembering the day before or anything before that. She thought it strange, finding only a blur of shapes and colors where there should've been childhood.

One can only take so much nagging, which is exactly why she had followed the devil's orders. She trekked through the slush that surrounded a pitiful town, drowned in its own waste and tears. Heavy rains deterred Calliope, only to receive an itch in her back every time she turned away. Her ragged clothes stuck to her skin, cold and leaching at her as she spotted the main road. 

"Almost there, Calli," the devil spoke, a hint of impatience in their voice, it recently having taken on a feminine lilt. Surely, it was a trick to garner trust from Calliope, to have someone that's somewhat alike, but something in her stirred at its sound. Her tongue curled around what used to be a name, but long since forgotten. 

Calliope grumbled wearily, her legs screaming as she finally hit the rocky tops of a cobblestone road. The sky sobbed, loud rumbles of water pattering at the roofs of houses around her, deciding to stumble over to the closest building and collapse on the door. It had swung open, leaving Calliope to wetly slap the ground. A quiet gasp was all the warning she got before her head was lifted from the cool stoney floor.

"Oh jeez, uh, are you alright?" The kneeling woman spoke, long dark hair cascaded down her shoulders and onto her cassock. She peered down at Calliope through her glasses, kind and soft eyes relaxed her exhausted body.

Calliope scraped words out of her throat, scratchy with unuse, "Yeah," She sat herself up to the best of her ability, feeling as though if she put too much weight on something, it may snap. 

As Calliope gathered her senses, the devil spoke once more, "Calli! This is it! I remember this place," The woman had stood, now sifting through a few baskets by the door. Calliope scanned the room, it being somewhat sizable, and filled with pews all pointing toward a huge stained glass window. Its colored shards displayed an entirely white figure with tendrils strung across the landscape like webbing, shades of purple and orange faded to a blue aura surrounding the figure. She felt that it may have looked a lot more soothing without the constant bashing of rain against its surface and dark tones it took from the clouds.

Calliope felt a piece of cloth draped on to her head and covered her eyes. Panic stabbing her limbs to life, she scrambled away, ripping the rag off as she did. 

The priest held up her hands as Calliope's breath slowed, "I didn't mean to scare you," She pointed at the watery skidmarks on the floor, "but, unfortunately, you are wet."

Calliope, looks at the puddles, face beginning to prickle with heat. She opened her mouth, only to be cut off with a giggle, "Don't worry about it, I've spilled plenty of bottles of communion wine on these floors. They can take a beating, especially if it means someone is safe," She squatted to meet Calliope's eyes, "Speaking of someone, may I have your name?" 

"Calliope," She coughed out, rubbing at her face with the rag, "Morrison,"

The priest hummed, "Reverend Ninomae," She held out her hand in offering, Calliope hesitated, but took it after drying her own. As they shook, the reverend smiled, "Water you doing out there?" 

A small moment of silence overcame the room, Calliope tilted her head to the side and furrowed her brows. The reverend snickered to herself, "Alright, alright, I'll lay off the puns… for a bit," She readjusted her glasses, moving to sit next to Calliope, "but seriously, what were you doing out there? The whole town's been preparing for this storm for a week-" She stopped herself, turning to squint at Calliope, "You're… not from here, are you?"

Calliope looked off to the side, shaking her head. She sat there for a long moment, staring at the walls of the church surrounding them, “Rever-en…” she cleared her throat, “Rev-Rev… Ni-nino- AGH!” she balled her fists, shaking her head at herself.

    Ninomae held up her hands, “Hey, hey, it’s alright.” She moved her head to meet Calliope’s eyes, “You can call me Ina if that’s easier for you, your voice sounds real beat up, you shouldn't use it all up on my title." She chuckled as Calliope smiled back, gratitude seeping into her expression.

Calliope sat up slightly, preparing her voice with a few thumps to her chest and a cough, "Ina…" she spoke slowly, "home?" she pointed down, tilting her head to the side.

Ina raised a brow for a moment before her eyes widened, "Oh! Yes, I live upstairs. It's a lot cheaper than having a house around here," Ina smiled, a sharp canine slipping out and resting on her bottom lip as she spoke, "I can show you around since I can't imagine you enjoying going back out into the rain." Calliope nodded and Ina stood.

"Wait-" Calliope croaked as Ina paused. She thumped at her chest a few times, stopping to hold up the tattered edge of her tunic, "Spare?"

The Royal Murder (The Royal Romance Murder Mystery Satire)

It was a dark and stormy night in the duchy of Ramsford. Our hosts Duke Bertrand Beaumont and Lord Maxwell Beaumont both ran frantically through the ballroom of their estate. The former was fretting and panicking about everything from the dismal weather outside to the napkin choices, while the latter was trying to calm the worries of his elder brother.

A loud clap of thunder sounded outside, simultaneous with the ringing of the doorbell, signalling the arrival of the first guests. The Duke of Ramsford took a deep breath to ready himself before taking his place alongside his brother to greet the incoming swarm of people.  Lords, ladies, dukes, duchesses, counts, and countesses all began to fill the room.

The Scarlet Duchess, Olivia Vanderwall Nevrakis, stood near the bar with a look of indifference on her face as she engaged in what seemed to be a very dull conversation with the eccentric Lady Penelope and the elegant Lady Kiara. Her family’s hand in various assassination attempts on the crown had left many hesitant around the duchess, but she remained uncaring in regards to the rumors about her involvement because the people that truly mattered knew of her innocence.

The Scorned Countess, Madeleine of Fydelia, held her head high as she roamed the room, stopping every once in a while to make conversation with various members of the court. Her two broken royal engagements had warranted many rumors of her own, especially since her deep affection for the former crown prince Leo was obvious to everyone at court. But, the thin, blonde woman refused to show any emotion where they were concerned.

The Polymyth, Lady Hanna Lee, stood next to her host, Lord Maxwell Beaumont, and the two settled into a comfortable and easy discussion. The lady had finally settled into her new life and it was obvious to those around her that getting out from under her parents’ thumb had been good for her.

The Commoner, Drake Walker, stood with his back to the wall in a secluded corner of the room with a glass of whiskey clutched in his hand. The king’s best friend since childhood had managed to be the center of many court gossip sessions as well. His good looks and flirtation with the queen before her marriage to the king did not go unnoticed by the ladies of the court. Across the room from him, Lord Neville Vancoeur stood with a scowl on his face. As he glared at the other man, it was made clear that the very public disagreements that had occurred between the two were not yet in the past.

The American Queen, Riley Brooks, stood faithfully next her husband with a warm and inviting smile on her face. Her introduction to Cordonia had been anything but welcoming, but the woman had still managed to overcome every trial that had been thrown her way. She had always handled everything with a grace that inspired those around her. King Liam had his arm wrapped around Riley’s waist. Although he was not the original heir, there was never any doubt that he would make a better king than his older brother Leo, who was supposed to take the throne. Leo’s impulsive and abrupt marriage to Katie, a woman he had met on a cruise, after his abdication only further proved this to the people of the court and country.

Tonight’s ball was the first since the assassins had been locked away and the royal wedding and honeymoon had ended, and life at court seemed to finally be returning to normal. Guests milled about the ballroom, and the sounds of voices mixed together with soft piano music filled the air. The people were at ease and were genuinely enjoying themselves.

This, however, did not last very long. The lights abruptly flickered off and various gasps and shouts erupted from all over the large room. The king called for the guards, and as they began to surround the royal couple, a single gunshot was heard. The screams became louder at the sound, but only seconds later the lights flickered back on. The screaming stopped now that the lights were back on, but everyone in the grand room seemed flustered as they checked to make sure that the people around them were unharmed.

A loud shriek filled the air, and a lady of the court dressed in a bright orange dress looked as if she was about to faint as she pointed to the body lying on the ballroom floor. Countess Madeleine of Fydelia lay in a pile on the ground with a single gunshot wound to the forehead.

The guests gasped and for a second everything remained still as they came to terms with the reality of their situation. They began to whisper frantically among themselves as blood dripped from the wound and onto the floor. They were all suddenly very ready to leave the estate as all of their previous fears of assassins were renewed. Chaos erupted as the guards tried to usher the royal couple to safety while various nobles rushed to get out of the ballroom.

As the nobles pushed and shoved each other in attempts to get through the doors, a man in a dark grey suit quickly surveyed the room before slipping through a back door. He could hear the voices of his fellow guard members through his earpiece as he walked to a secluded corner of the estate grounds. He removed the earpiece and took out his phone.

“It’s done,” he spoke into the device. “She won’t be a problem for you anymore.”

Katie smiled as she looked over at her sleeping husband.

“Good. The money will be in your account by morning,” she said softly to refrain from waking the man next to her before hanging up the phone.

The watching one or more Jesus films at Easter is a common activity for Christians individually or as communities. These might be documentaries or one of the many versions of cinematic Jesus that have cropped up over the years. (For some examples, see my list here at Jesus films – updating media). But while these films might directly referring to the person of Jesus of Nazareth, within the wider cinematic world there are characters whose portrayal and actions resemble, in some way, those of Jesus in the gospels. We’ve probably come across films or TV shows like this, where a character of the situation models or reminds us of Jesus and the gospel stories, and gives us a kind of cinematic Jesus.

This identification is strengthened when the structure of the film follows what Robert Jewett and John Shelton Lawrence call the American monomyth (related to Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey). They describe particular plot structure as:

A community in a harmonious paradise is threatened by evil; normal institutions fail to contend with this threat; a selfless superhero emerges to renounce temptations and carry out the redemptive task; aided by fate, his decisive victory restores the community to its paradisiacal condition: the superhero then recedes into obscurity.

This structure with its superheroic, messianic protagonist looks similar to the messianic trajectory of the gospels. We might see the hero sacrificing his or her life for their friends or a community in order to save them; or the hero having divine or mysterious origins or being a prophesied deliverer; or being able to both demonstrate superhuman power while also being very human. However, there are key differences from the gospel story. The superhero typically defeats evil by enacting (and therefore redeeming) violence upon that evil, something that jars with Jesus journey to the cross. Moreover, it is almost always a temporary reprieve from evil (convenient for film sequels), while the work of Christ on the cross is seen as definitive once and for all time.

So, given that as a caveat, here is a small selection of films that characters that might be considered Christ or Christlike figures.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

C.S. Lewis’ classic Christian allegory, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, made its transition to the big screen in 2005, directed by Kiwi, Andrew Adamson. The character of the lion Aslan is titled King of Beasts, the son of the Emperor-Over-the-Sea, and the King above all High Kings in Narnia and is this story’s Christ figure. The Stone Table substitutes for the cross, deeper magic for a ransom/Christus Victor form of atonement, and the White Witch as Satan.

The Fifth Element (1997)

Luc Besson’s science fiction film The Fifth Element brings a mix of action, surrealism, humour, and a classic evil vs. unprepared good together in a way the actually works for the most part. The character of Leeloo, a naive, alien saviour sent to save the world, is the titular fifth element – that of self-sacrificial love. The character has her own Gethsemane moment before choosing to sacrifice herself to defeat the impending evil, and is then ‘resurrected’ at the conclusion of the moving. Oddly powerful given the goofiness of much of the movie.

Whale Rider is for many people an obvious choice for a film with a Christ-like saviour character in Kahu Paikea Apirana. From the being an kind of outcast, to the imagery of death and rebirth located in the riding of the whales, people have made that connection. A question remains though – is this simply an appropriation of the story regardless of the context and culture because we want it to be this way.

The prospect of interpreting the character Pai (short for Paikea) in Whale Rider as a Christ-figure raises some potential objections, because Whale Rider seeks to represent indigenous Maori spiritual traditions, and imposition of a Christological framework onto the film may be viewed as another instance of Christian cultural imperialism. After all, among the world’s spiritual and religious traditions, Christianity holds no monopoly on the valorization of self-sacrifice, and Jesus is not the only figure in the history of religion and mythology to undergo a death and resurrection. On the other hand, both the film and the novel upon which it is based appear after some 200 years of Maori contact with European colonialism, and from the earliest anthropological and ethnographic recording of indigenous traditions until the media portrayals of today, the centrality of the Christ-narrative in the dominant Christian-informed cultures has affected both the telling and the hearing of religious stories. … But the portrayal of Pai as a Christ-figure may be read alternatively as a subversion of colonial religion. In portraying Pai as a Christ-figure, the film could be saying in effect, on behalf of Maori people, “We don’t need the white man’s Jesus—we are capable of producing our own Maori saviors.”

Comparing Superman to Jesus Christ is fairly common, though the comparison would be better to Moses. In Superman Returns, director Bryan Singer makes the Christ-likeness explicit with Superman hovering over the earth while Marlon Brando’s voice-over from the original 1978 Richard Donner Superman film playing in the background.

Paul Newman stars as the prisoner, Luke, who won’t conform to the prison system and so stands in contrast to the way things work. The film positions Luke as a Christic figure, both in terms of the way the prisoners are influenced by him and in the punishment he endures. This Christian symbolism can be seen after Luke’s death with a final photograph of him superimposed over crossroads at the end of the film, highlighting a crucifixion motif.

The three films, The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), and The Matrix Revolutions (2003) follow Jewett and Lawrence’s monomyth structure closely, with each film offering a kind of version of that. This is particularly the case in the first and third films, where the central character of Neo, the One, is portrayed using explicit messianic, crucifixion, and resurrection imagery.

In this 1951 classic, the alien, Klaatu, comes to Earth to judge humanity for its warlike ways and to destroy the earth because it poses a threat to other alien civilisations should humanity’s progress be left unchecked. In order to move around among people, Klatu takes on human alias of Mr. Carpenter (one of many Christic references), experiences the worst humanity has to offer, before forgiving humanity and attempting to save us from our violent nature. (He also has a killer robot – perhaps an apocalyptic angel?).

The movie was rebooted with Keanu Reeves in 2008, but as with most of these things it’s best to watch the original first. A definite classic.

Myth: Polyamorous people are less emotionally mature or afraid of commitment

"Why can’t you just pick?” is a statement that many poly people know far too well. Our society often depicts having multiple partners as “youthful exploration” or a sign of a mid-life crisis. Poly people are supposedly just sowing their wild oats until they age, mature, and finally settle down.

The truth is polyamorous people come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. In fact, many polyamorous people grew up engaging exclusively in monogamous relationships. It wasn’t until they matured that they were able to express their full range of needs, work through jealousy and insecurity, and embrace the possibility of having multiple partners.
