22,846 people have played the game of Major League Baseball. Entering tonight, Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, and Babe Ruth were the only three players in the history of the game to hit 700 or more career home runs. Tonight, Albert Pujols joined them, becoming only the fourth Major Leaguer with 700 or more home runs in their career.
I had the pleasure (and torture) of watching Pujols’ career unfold throughout my life. Playing the vast majority of his career in a Cardinals uniform, Pujols was a player I regularly got to watch, considering that the Cardinals played the Pirates 13 times per season as a result of both teams being in the NL Central division. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times that I watched that man obliterate a baseball at PNC Park or against the Pirates at Busch Stadium. Pujols has always sort of felt like the grim reaper of baseball for me. I would always get the worst of feelings when he would come to the plate, as if I just knew he was about to tee up whatever pitch he saw (and he often did.)
But regardless of how many times he would deflate my hopes, I had to respect the sheer talent that he displayed. His offensive prowess, pure power, and remarkable patience at the plate cut through whatever feelings my personal fandoms caused. As someone that loves this dumb game as much as I do, I am beyond grateful to have watched this man’s career from start to finish. Albert Pujols is one of many spectacular chapters in the story/history of this game. A chapter that you cannot tell the story of baseball without. The legend of Albert Pujols will resonate throughout this game as long as it is played.

While I've only been in the gvf fandom (peaceful army?) for about two months now, I'm going to burst if I don't tell someone that PNC Park (where Greta is performing tonight) is home of the Pittsburgh Pirates - Pittsburgh's baseball team. And I know that Jake likes pirates so I feel like I would burst if I didn't tell someone. While I'm personally not going to the show (like I said I've only been following gvf for about two months) if I don't get pirate!Jake content I'm going to riot and I'm not even exclusively in his lane - I swerve too much - 🐝 (also can I be a bee anon? I promise not to bug you too much)
Hi!! Of course you can be a bee anon! I’m sure there are pirate!Jake fics out there! (If you’ve written or know of some, sound off below)!
I’m so happy to have you!

Tell Him (Andrei Svechnikov ft. Braden Holtby)
Tumblr media
Request: Imagine being [Holtby’s] sister and dating Andrei Svechnikov but [Holtby] doesn’t know
A/N: Text messages are in bold. The original request was for Y/N to be Ovechkin’s sister, but since he is on my “Players I Don’t Write For” list, I switched it to Braden Holtby.
Warnings: Two swear words, angst
Word Count: 2.5k
It was hard enough being the Capitals’ star goalie Braden Holtby’s little sister, but try that while secretly dating superstar winger and member of the rival Hurricanes Andrei Svechnikov. That’s hard on steroids.
Things would’ve been a lot easier if you had fessed up to Braden already. But alas, you were sitting in primo seats in the PNC Arena in Raleigh three days after Christmas, watching your boyfriend’s team shell your brother, who of course had to be in net tonight, with quality shots. Braden wasn’t playing all that well, and you were on the edge of your seat, anxiously watching the action.
“Five minutes left.” Your sister-in-law, Brandi, was sitting next to you, and from the look of her shoulders, the tension was obvious.
“I can’t tell him tonight. He’s going to be so pissed!”
“I hate to say I told you so, Y/N, but: I told you so.”
As you turned to glare at her, the goal horn blared and everyone got up out of their seats to celebrate. You whipped your head back around in the direction of the Capitals’ net and saw Andrei in the middle of a group hug with his teammates. He was pointing at you and grinning widely. Braden took his helmet off and stared at the scene playing out in front of him.
“Looks like you don’t have a choice, honey.” Brandi patted you on the shoulder.
“I told him not to fucking do that, and what does he do? He does it!” you groused as you watched Andrei high five his teammates.
“He clearly agrees with me.” You didn’t answer Brandi because she was right.
You met Andrei eight months ago while his and your brother’s teams were playing against each other in the first round of the playoffs, but you didn’t start dating until you started school at Duke. While you weren’t that far away from your brother and Virginia, you were homesick, and you got Andrei’s number when you met him in the spring, so you ended up calling him during your second week at school and asking him to hang out.
It was nice hanging out with Andrei. While he didn’t live in Durham, he was only 30 minutes away in Raleigh, so he knew the area well enough, and he helped you settle in to life in North Carolina while you helped him improve his English (he was from Russia, and while he spent some time in the States before joining the Hurricanes, his English still needed some work). Within a few weeks, you were dating.
It scared and amazed you at the same time how fast you fell for Andrei. He was spontaneous and knew exactly how to cheer you up, making corny jokes that sucked so badly they were funny. Andrei was tired of hiding your relationship, and while you wanted nothing more than to shout it from the rooftops, you were afraid of disappointing Braden.
Braden was both your older brother and a father figure of sorts, since he was 12 years older than you. You moved to the States for high school and lived with him, his wife, Brandi, and your niece and nephew in Virginia. You loved your big brother and always confided in him about your problems, so it felt weird keeping such a big secret from him, but you did because you didn’t know how he would react. While Braden never explicitly told you to not date a hockey player, Andrei was a star player on one of the Capitals’ biggest rivals. And he just killed any chances of Braden’s team winning the game tonight.
Tonight was the worst possible night to drop the bomb on him, but Andrei just made it impossible to stall any longer.
You sat with your head in your hands for the remainder of the game, even when Panik cut the deficit from 6-3 to 6-4, because the game was effectively over. Besides, you had to figure out the best way to break the news to your brother about your relationship with Andrei, and fast.
***************
You were quaking in your boots as you stood in front of the Capitals’ dressing room, waiting for your brother to come out.
“Whatever happens, Y/N, I’ll be there,” Brandi reassured you. “He’s going to be mad at first, but he’ll forgive you. He loves his baby sister.” She ruffled your hair.
“I’m glad you figured it out: I would’ve gone insane if you hadn’t known, either.”
“I was a teenage girl once too, you know.”
You smiled at her. Brandi figured it out on Christmas Eve when Braden asked you and Brandi to accompany him to Raleigh for the second half of the back-to-back, and you initially said no. When Braden asked you why not, you made up a lame excuse about being tired from a long semester, and while he bought it, Brandi didn’t and pulled you aside after Braden went to bed. Telling her about your secret relationship lifted some of the weight off of your shoulders.
“And you made a smart choice wearing his jersey,” Brandi added.
You looked down at the three white stars and navy letters on the front of your red jersey before glancing at the white number 70 on your sleeve. Little did she know that you weren’t wearing an ordinary black t-shirt under your jersey, but instead Andrei’s shirsey that he gave you earlier this afternoon as a belated Christmas present. You might’ve told Braden and Brandi that you were taking an Uber back to campus to see some of your friends when in reality, you went to Andrei’s apartment. At least it wasn’t a complete lie: you took an Uber.
Suddenly, you felt a pair of strong arms wrap around your waist from behind, and you jumped, not knowing who it was until you turned around and found your victorious boyfriend smiling at you.
“Hi, babe.” He peppered your cheeks with kisses.
“Andrei!” you whined, but you liked having his undivided attention.
Your moment of bliss was interrupted when you heard someone clear their throat. Still in Andrei’s arms, you turned to find your brother scowling at you, arms crossed against his chest. “Bray, I can explain—”
“Explain what? That you’ve been clearly been dating him and sneaking around behind my back to do it?” Braden rarely raised his voice, but the raw hurt in his tone made you wish he did. “I thought we had a better relationship than that.”
“Braden—”
“Brandi, I’m booking us another night at the hotel and I’ll make arrangements for us to fly out tomorrow. I don’t want to see her until we go to the airport.”
You started to cry. “I’m so sorry, Bray, I didn’t mean to hurt you!”
“I can’t deal with this right now. Let’s go, Brandi.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her down the hall and away from you while you sobbed into Andrei’s chest.
***************
It was a silent drive back to Andrei’s apartment. Since you had nowhere else to go for the night, he insisted you stay with him.
Andrei parked the car in his space and as soon as you got out of the car, your phone chimed with a text.
“Is it him?” Andrei asked.
You shook your head as you looked at the screen. “It’s Brandi.”
Her text read: Are you staying with Andrei?
You shot a quick Yes back before walking into the building, Andrei following you.
While you were in the elevator, three grey dots appeared on the screen. You and Andrei watched as they disappeared and a text popped up in its place: I’m sorry about Braden. He just needs the night to calm down/process.
You swallowed before typing back: I get it and the elevator doors opened on Andrei’s floor.
The grey dots appeared again when you were settled on top of the bed, Andrei’s arms wrapped around you, and the next text read: We have a private plane leaving at 2PM from Raleigh. Be at the airport at noon.
Followed quickly by another one: And bring Andrei with you.
You looked at your boyfriend. “You don’t have to come if you don’t want to.”
“No, I want to. I’ve got to face him at some point, and besides, we should tell him together. Properly, I mean.”
You smiled for the first time since you saw Braden outside the locker room. “Thank you.”
“Anything for you, my love.” Andrei gently kissed you on the lips before pulling away and saying, “You should answer her.”
“Oh, right.” You typed out the text and sent it—We’ll be there—before realizing something. “Shit. My carry-on is with the Caps’ bags!”
You hurriedly texted Brandi, and she quickly replied: Don’t worry; I have it. You’re good with the clothes you have on, right?
You cringed. “This is not good.”
Andrei leaned over to read the text. “What do you mean…? Oh.”
“Yeah, oh. I’m wearing your shirsey!”
“You can borrow one of my other shirts.”
“Do you own any non-Hurricanes related clothing?”
“Of course I do!” Andrei huffed.
“Wait, let me rephrase that: do you have any shirts not related to hockey in general?”
This time, Andrei paused. “I do…somewhere.”
“It’s all right, we’ll worry about it in the morning. I just really want to go to sleep.”
Andrei got up off the bed and went over to his drawers while you texted Brandi to say good night. He pulled out a pair of sweatpants and a Hurricanes t-shirt for you to wear and tossed them to you. You smiled and went into the bathroom to change.
When you came back out, Andrei was already tucked into bed, and he was shirtless.
“Come here, babe.” He held out his arms to you, and you collapsed in the bed next to him. “I’m really behind on laundry, so I don’t have another clean shirt. I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine, babe.” A moment of silence passed before you continued: “You were right, you know. I should’ve told him earlier. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, Y/N. I get where you were coming from.” He kissed your cheek and you snuggled further into his arms. Before you could fall asleep, though, he added: “A private plane, though? Really?”
You chuckled. “Leading your team to a Stanley Cup has its perks. Not that he uses them often; leave that to Ovi.”
You could feel the vibrations of Andrei’s laughter as he pulled you even closer to him than before.
***************
You were so tense on the drive to the airport, not even Andrei’s bad jokes could make you smile.
Brandi texted you earlier that morning, telling you Braden was still in a bad mood but that she expected him to forgive you. You weren’t so sure he would. He had never acted like this before, and you were scared you ruined your relationship with your brother.
Your stomach churned as you and Andrei walked up to the terminal entrance.
“Are you okay?” Concern was written all over his face.
“No. But there’s no turning back now,” you said and grabbed Andrei’s hand as you walked through the doors.
Brandi and your brother were waiting on the other side of the door.
“Hey, Bray,” you said, trying to sound as casual as you could. “I—”
“How long?” Braden cut you off.
You gulped. “Almost five months.”
“Five months.” The last part came out like a whisper, so he cleared his throat before continuing. “Wow, okay. Look, I’m sorry about last night. I should never have left you in the arena like that. But I was really upset, and I still am.”
There was a terrible silence before Andrei blurted out: “I’m the one who insisted we keep it from you. Don’t blame her; it’s all on me.”
Braden regarded him for a moment. “I know for a fact that’s not true, but I like that you’re defending my sister. If you don’t mind, though, can I talk to her alone for a moment?”
“Sure, I’ll just—”
“You don’t need to leave, we’ll talk over there.” Braden pointed at the big windows, and you followed him.
“Y/N, I want you to know that I’m not mad about you dating Andrei. I mean, it upset me at first, but it’s because so many changes have happened: you went off to college, and now you have a boyfriend…but I’m over it now. You have to live your life.” He cleared his throat. “There is one thing, though: I’m hurt that you felt you couldn’t tell me. Why did you feel that way?”
You felt a tear fall down your cheek. “I didn’t want to disappoint you.”
“Why would I be disappointed?”
“Andrei plays for one of your biggest rivals.”
Braden scoffed. “I couldn’t care less about that. I care about the way he treats you, and from what I’ve seen so far, he’s good to you. I think he might even love you.”
You blushed. “I think I might love him, too.”
“Then that’s all that matters. Nothing could ever make me stop loving you, Y/N.” Braden wrapped his arms around you and hugged you tight. You held on as if he were going to disappear.
“I love you too, Bray.”
You pulled away from the hug, only to find Andrei and Brandi standing right behind you.
“Are you guys good?” Brandi asked.
“We’re good.” You smiled.
“Thank God, I don’t ever want to see you two fight again.” She came over and hugged you.
“As for you, Andrei,” Braden turned his attention to your boyfriend. “Just because I live in Virginia doesn’t mean I won’t come down here and kick your ass if you hurt my sister.”
“I wouldn’t dream of hurting her.”
“Good. Now I know you’re an adult,” he shifted his attention back to you, “but promise me you’ll stay in the dorms on weeknights and not take your focus off your studies. You’ve worked so hard to get here, and you’re going to graduate from college.”
“Yes, Dad,” you joked.
“Okay, I think we’ve covered everything. I’ll give you two a moment.” Braden grabbed Brandi’s hand and walked over to the ticketing counter.
“I’m so glad it went well,” you said.
“I knew it would: he’s just protective of you.”
You wrapped your arms around your boyfriend. “Thanks for coming with me.”
“Anytime. When do you come back?”
“Nine days.”
“Ugh, it feels so far away,” he whined, and you laughed.
“I’ll be back before you know it.” You leaned in and kissed him.
“Ahem! No PDA around me!” Braden shouted, and you and Andrei pulled away from each other laughing.
“Call me when you land?”
“I will. See you soon.” You kissed Andrei on the cheek before joining Braden and Brandi at the ticketing counter to go back home.

Dobnak Dominates In Pittsburgh!
Twins 5 Pirates 2 W-Dobnak (2-1) L-Williams (0-3)
Randy Dobnak has been quite the story for the Twins since splashing onto the scene late last season. He was a great Uber driver turned solid starting pitching and he got to pitch at a familiar place. He went to lots of games at PNC Park as a kid and had the game of his life tonight in Pittsburgh. The Twins got him some run support in the second inning as Jake Cave led-off and was hit by a pitch. A groundout moved Cave up to second base and Marwin Gonzalez knocked him home with a single down the left field line. This put the Twins up 1-0 and Randy Dobnak made that run stand up. He threw six scoreless innings and handed the game over to the bullpen. Cody Stashak had a 1-2-3 seventh and Tyler Duffey fanned two in a scoreless eighth. The Twins would finally get some insurance runs in the ninth as Byron Buxton led-off with a double. Mitch Garver walked Marwin Gonzalez singled home a run and the Twins led 2-0. Later in the inning, Max Kepler drilled a Geoff Hartlieb fastball out to center for a three-run blast. Minnesota took a five-run lead into the bottom of the ninth and Jorge Alcala entered. Alcala retired two batters sandwiched in between an Adam Frazier walk. With two outs, Josh Bell crushed a Jorge Alcala fastball out to center for a two-run blast and the Pirates were within three. Jorge Alcala was able to strikeout Colin Moran to end the game and the Twins improved to (10-2) on the season.
-Final Thoughts-Randy Dobnak was sensational in his home ballpark. He threw six scoreless innings and allowed three hits with a strikeout. His one-seamer was working tonight in a win that he’ll never forget. Cody Stashak had a perfect seventh, Tyler Duffey had a 1-2-3 eighth, and Jorge Alcala allowed two runs in the ninth. Marwin Gonzalez led the team with two hits and Max Kepler knocked in three runs. The Twins hit 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Tomorrow, Kenta Maeda will face JT Brubaker in the series finale on Thursday afternoon.

A Great Man’s Legacy
Ten years ago, I met the new girlfriend of a really good friend of mine. She was southern, she was opinionated and she seemed very eager to be best friends with everyone in her new boyfriend’s group of friends.
I despised her. She annoyed me. And I gossiped about it.
There was one instance where a group of our friends was hanging out at one of their apartments in Wicker Park and this girl just came right in while we were watching a sporting event and plopped herself down on the couch between me and one of my buddies. Like, there definitely wasn’t room for another human in between us, and she had the nerve to just wedge herself in between us…
What the… Who was this girl? And what was her deal?
Ten years later, she’s married to my buddy, and has become a dear friend of mine.
--
It took another friend, and being on the other side of a new-group-of-friends situation for me to see how selfish and awful I had been treating her.
This is the story of that friend who came alongside me and helped me learn one of the most valuable lessons of my life.
--
Five years ago, I moved from Nashville to St. Louis to pursue a fresh start in my career, and to get a change of scenery in my personal life. I was about six months removed from a tough breakup from an ex-girlfriend, and for as much as I loved Nashville, I needed something and somewhere new.
When I had first left Chicagoland for Nashville two years earlier, I had been dating a girl that was already living in Nashville. Upon arriving in Music City, I immediately fell in with her friends, started tagging along to their social events, and in a matter of a very short time, I felt very much like I was settled in.
This was both a blessing and a curse.
I never really made my own friends. I never really had to go out of my way to establish my own routines, or try very hard to get involved. She was super active in things and I just kind of showed up and did stuff. It was easy. It was fun and I liked it. I didn’t see any downside.
Until, there was no girlfriend anymore. And then, all the sudden, it was awful. I had three friends. Everywhere I went I thought of things I had done with her and I couldn’t seem to do anything to shake her memory. After seven months of this, I packed a U-Haul and moved to St. Louis.
I got a new job, I found an apartment in the middle of the medical district by Wash U. and I was determined to go out and make friends.
My new apartment complex was full of young doctors and medical students and I soon met a neighbor who was moving in next door as she began residency at Barnes Jewish Hospital a few blocks away. A group of six of us immediately formed, comprised of a few nurses, a young doctor, a pharmacy student, a guy who sold insurance, and me. I was 28 at the time, but it felt like the type of environment you’d want college to be. We all went to work or school, and then at nights, on weekends, or whenever the medical people weren’t working, we’d hang out. We’d grill, we’d watch movies together, we went out to eat, we played games together, explored the city. It was magical in a way that I had not yet experienced.
Through my neighbor, I met more and more doctors from her group of friends, and this is where I met Dr. Brian Pierce.
--
From the get-go, Brian and I hit it off hard. He was a golfer. I was a golfer. He was a rabid college football fan and I was a recovering college football addict. He had an insatiable appetite for sports facts and factoids, and well, I kinda did too…
Two days after we met, he invited me golfing. We had so much fun, we went the next day, too.
The next weekend, he invited me over – with my neighbor and her boyfriend – to have dinner and play games. Two weekends later, we golfed again, and again. And another friend dinner at his place soon followed.
A few weeks later we were all gathered around a sofa in someone’s apartment as I dominated some sports trivia game online. For a moment I reveled in my trivia dominance. And then I stopped. Here I was wedged on a couch between a group of friends I had known for two months.
Nowhere had they scoffed at me. Nowhere did I sense they were talking behind my back. Nowhere had they questioned if I belonged as a part of their group. None of them had treated me like I had treated my buddy’s girlfriend six years earlier. That’s for sure.
Tumblr media
--
A month or so later, Brian and I were driving over onto the Illinois side of the Missouri boarder to go play golf. We had about a 45-minute drive, so we had some time to talk. We talked about med school. About placement afterwards. About his parents. About my parents. About my job and about how building a career as 20-somethings was hard, no matter if you were a marketing consultant, or a doctor.
Somewhere about the twelfth hole of that day’s round of golf, I stopped and said, ‘Man, I’ve known you for like three months, and you’re one of the most genuine, best friends I have ever had.’
He said something like, ‘thanks, brother’ and we moved on. Guys don’t tend to linger in their heartfelt conversations on the golf course…
But about two holes later, or maybe it was after the round – I don’t remember – he stopped me and shared one of the cooler sentiments I’ve ever heard. I don’t remember the exact words, but it was something along the lines of, ‘it doesn’t matter if you’ve known someone for ten minutes, or ten years, you can still treat them as if they’re your best friend.’
I knew we didn’t have the long-standing history of a friend from second grade, or someone he’d been through the trenches of med school with, but he was right. What was to say that we couldn’t be best friends just because we just met? He treated me like one, that’s for sure.
--
Thinking back on how I treated my friend’s girlfriend during the couch session in Wicker Park, I cringe. I had a chance to treat her like Brian and his friends treated me during our couch session with the trivia game, and I didn’t. I had a chance to help her feel loved and accepted by a new group of friends, and I didn’t.
It wasn’t until I met Brian Pierce that I realized how good it could feel to give someone the benefit of the doubt and just go ahead and treat them like your best friend, even if you barely knew them.
--
After I moved from St. Louis, Brian and I kept up via text and social media. He’d bust my chops about something golf-related, or we’d text as the World Series drew near. As he progressed in his career, I would often see him debating in the medical community on Twitter about how to treat certain diseases or conditions. The man was a sponge for knowledge, and was so passionate about his craft.
We made plans this fall for me to come to Pittsburgh – where he was now living – and play golf and go see a Pirates game at PNC Park.
--
I’m writing in past tense tonight because Dr. Brian Pierce was found dead this past weekend. He went to bed feeling sick and for some reason, he didn’t wake up. The details around his passing are not yet known, and it’s been a challenging few hours trying to figure out how a 31-year old doctor is tip-top shape could just… die.
My heart is broken, and I’m sure there are loved ones all over who are hurting tonight.
--
It’s been five years since I met Brian, and I have tried my darndest to be the type of friend he was. To dive in. To go deep. To not worry if it seems like I just met you yesterday, If I like you, I’m gonna be your friend.
Sometimes, it’s heavy handed. Sometimes you end up trusting people that don’t yet deserve your trust, and sometimes that gets you hurt.
But you know what?
I believe it’s worth it.
I spent six months feeling like I was Brian Pierce’s best friend. He had at least two other guys I knew of that felt the same way. And I’m sure there were countless more. That’s just the type of guy he was.
--
I’m writing tonight because I hope everyone who reads these words will do their best to be the type of friend that Brian Pierce was. To invest in people. To get to know people. To make friends so, so easily and to not worry about whether you’ve known the person three months, or thirty years. That was his way, and it was an amazing way to live.
I’ll miss you, brother. Thank you for being such a great friend.

Panic! At The Disco Announce New Album, Tour
It's been awhile since Panic! At The Disco last made a move. Since ending the Death Of A Bachelor Tour in 2017, the band - or, as it is now, just Brendon Urie - has been keeping things quiet, with Urie working on Broadway and other projects. Now they're back and ready to get things going again. Panic! At The Disco have announced a new album and tour, starting their next era strong.
Panic!'s new album is called Pray For The Wicked, and is due out on June 22, the first tastes of the album coming with two new songs, 'Say Amen (Saturday Night)' (with an action-packed music video) and '(Fuck A) Silver Lining.' The massive tour supporting it will start in July and will hit shows across the U.S. and Canada before the band headlines England's Reading and Leeds Festivals. The band are already playing a series of secret shows to hype up the album, first playing a show in Cleveland, with new touring bassist Nicole Row on duty. The band are to perform tonight on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. A secret show scheduled for today in Asbury Park, New Jersey has been rescheduled to tomorrow following a major snowstorm.
Check out the dates for Panic! At The Disco's tour below. The pre-sale starts on March 30 at 10:30am (gain access to it by singing up on their mailing list), while the general sale starts on the same day at 12:00pm local time. A R I Z O N A and Hayley Kiyoko will support.
