The Guardian launches a new global marketing campaign –‘Not for sale’ – emphasising the Guardian's unique ownership model and strong tradition of robust, editorial independence. The work focuses on the strengths of the Guardian’s reader-funded model that helps to keep Guardian journalism open to all and positions this as a key reason for people to trust and financially support the Guardian.
Collaborating with creative agency Lucky Generals, this is the Guardian's first brand campaign since 2019’s ‘Hope is Power’ and embraces a new strategic and creative approach. Fresh bold designs and confident statements of independence are based on insight that the Guardian’s reader-funded model allows it to be open to all, but beholden to no one. This gives it the power to break stories no one else can, but also drives a huge range of emotive reactions that are celebrated in the work.
The campaign coincides with the launch of the Guardian’s Europe edition that provides readers on the continent with a tailored English-language edition of the Guardian website and app for the first time.
A brand new film directed by New York-based duo Rubberband and created by Lucky Generals, will showcase how the Guardian delights and challenges readers around the world. An ambitious undertaking, the film charts this multitude of reactions and features a voice over from writer and artist Inua Ellams.
With an intense and emotive soundtrack the film quickly cuts between shots of how the Guardian is consumed by people as the voiceover uses single powerful words to describe the emotions it stirs and the way its content is used.
The campaign also features a range of bold and bright posters that will run alongside each other digitally and out of home, proudly proclaiming the Guardian to be “Loved”, “Hated”, “Trusted", “Feared”, “But never controlled”.

I've wanted to collaborate with Nadya and Pussy Riot for years because of our shared belief that art and performance are powerful tools of social change. Pussy Riot has been subjected to Putin's brutality and methods of oppression firsthand, so their comments on Putin and the invasion of Ukraine are especially relevant. Putin's Ashes is a beautiful, haunting, evocative video and music piece. In working on a visual for Nadya's show at @jeffreydeitchgallery, I illustrated from video stills and imagery that Nadya provided in an attempt to encapsulate the powerful aesthetics of Pussy Riot and the narrative of the music video piece. I'm honored to collaborate with Nadya, who I think is one of the most fearless, articulate, and outspoken multi-media artists and activists working today. 2018 - It’s Cold Outside
After some supporters of the #MeToo movement expressed an interest in banning the song 'Baby, It’s Cold Outside,' a Kentucky radio station decided to show its support for the newly controversial song by playing it on repeat for two hours. The song had faced controversy as people began to scrutinize the situation portrayed in the lyrics. Written in 1944, it describes the exchange between a man and a woman, as the woman expresses her desire to get home and the man tries to persuade her to stay. At one point, the woman even asks, “What’s in this drink?”
2011 - The Beatles
An ultra-rare 'Beatles VI' in-store promotional poster sold at an eBay auction for $6,300. Seventeen bids were placed before the 20 - 28 inch rarity sold. Beatles VI Is Here! was printed in block letters across the top of the black-and-white photo of the Fab Four, with album art of the first five records printed along the bottom edge. American singer songwriter Dan Fogelberg died at his home in Maine at the age of 56. The US singer, songwriter discovered he had advanced prostate cancer in 2004. Had the 1981 album ‘The Innocent Age’, which featured the hits ‘Leader of the Band,’ ‘Hard to Say,’ and ‘Run for the Roses.’
2004 - Ozzy Osbourne
Gold and silver Black Sabbath discs were stolen from the Kent home of Ozzy Osbourne's former manager Patrick Meehan. Police recovered the discs a week later after they were offered for sale on the internet auction site eBay.
1988 - Sylvester James
American soul and disco singer Sylvester James died of complications from AIDS in San Francisco aged 41. Scored the 1978 US No.36 & UK No.8 single 'You Make Me Feel, Mighty Real'. He sang back-up vocals for Aretha Franklin on her 1985 Who's Zoomin' Who’ Album.
1984 - Dusty Hill
ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill accidentally shot himself in the abdomen when his derringer fell from the boot of his car and discharged. Hill drove himself to a local hospital for treatment.
1966 - Jimi Hendrix
The first Jimi Hendrix Experience single 'Hey Joe', was released in the UK on Polydor records, the track had been rejected by the Decca label. It went on to be a No.6 hit in the UK, but failed to chart in America. Chas Chandler, who was now managing Hendrix had seen Folk singer Tim Rose perform the song at the Cafe Wha? in New York City.
