Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face, Great Chieftain o’ the Puddin-race! Aboon them a’ ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye wordy of a grace As lang ‘s my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill, Your hurdies like a distant hill, Your pin wad help to mend a mill In time o’ need, While thro’ your pores the dews distil Like amber bead.

His knife see Rustic-labour dight, An’ cut ye up wi’ ready slight, Trenching your gushing entrails bright, Like onie ditch; And then, O what a glorious sight, Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an’ strive: Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive, Till a’ their weel-swall’d kytes belyve Are bent like drums; Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive, Bethankit hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout, Or olio that wad staw a sow, Or fricassee wad mak her spew Wi’ perfect sconner, Looks down wi’ sneering, scornfu’ view On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash, As feckless as a wither’d rash, His spindle shank a guid whip-lash, His nieve a nit; Thro’ bluidy flood or field to dash, O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed, The trembling earth resounds his tread, Clap in his walie nieve a blade, He’ll make it whissle; An’ legs, an’ arms, an’ heads will sned, Like taps o’ thrissle.

Ye Pow’rs wha mak mankind your care, And dish them out their bill o’ fare, Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware That jaups in luggies; But, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer, Gie her a Haggis!

Dr Who: The Krotons

I rewatched this serial on Burns night, 25 January 2023. It’s been a long time since I last watched it, and almost nothing of it had stuck in my memory. So, it was like watching it for the first time, again. Shame there were no wee beasties to be seen...

Bit of a Hunger Games feel to the start with the selection. I guess the inspiration might be the same, namely the sacrificial tribute part from Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. But, gosh — gassing people to death after they have been chosen in a selection is dark. Darker than the previous times when Dr Who used the ‘tribute’ theme.

So, this is Robert Holmes’s first serial for Dr Who. Just looking up the history of this tale, and it’s amazing it’s as good as it is given the speed to which a story for a different show was switched around. It scoots along at a decent pace, and there are some lovely moments. In context, it doesn’t stand out either as brilliant or terrible. It does contain hints as to what Holmes will bring to the show later.

All up, not a bad serial to shift us from 1968 to 1969…

James Cosmo is one of the Scottish actors who appeared in Game of Thrones. He portrayed Jeor Mormont who was Jon Snow’s predecessor as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.

January 25th is the birthday of Robert Burns (1759 – 1796) – Scotland’s national poet. The evening of the 25th is known as Burns Night which includes Burns supper and recitations of the poetry of the late bard.

James Cosmo recites “To A Mouse” which was recently voted Scotland’s favorite Scots poem.

Last Friday night was a pretty special treat as we celebrated Burns Night locally at @thebookandrecordbar For drinks we were spoiled with class single and blended malts, Dalwhinnie and @monkeyshoulder accompanied by four class acts from south of the river. Sadly we missed some of the first act, making the mistake of thinking it'd take a while to warm up (it was sold out) but what we heard we liked. The music of the next band @bennettvaluks was both beautiful and uplifting whilst the finger-picking style and bluesy-folk vocals of @alexseelmusic enthralled. The indie folk-rock of @houseabovethesun charmed the crowd as the musical part of the evening came to a satisfying end. The evening was far from over though and until 1am The Book & Record Bar, the conversations were as varied as the tomes and vinyl of The Book & Record Bar that surrounded us. All in all, a beautiful evening of music with beautiful people.
