Episode: Almost Famous (3 x 07)
He has not, for a minute, stopped wondering what she isn’t telling him. The phantom scent of caramel sauce, more than slightly disturbing in context, fills the air every time something happens that has him wondering a little harder. The murder of Derek Brookner has him wondering a lot harder.
He’s been trying to be good. Or respectful. Or faithful? What’s good has seemed a lot like a moving target lately, but he’s been trying to be decent when it comes to wondering. He’s been trying to keep it in the realm of Nikki Heat Need to Know, because he’s in a relationship and she’s in a relationship and it’s not appropriate to come over all Yes, Please, I Would Like The Insider Tour Of The Clubs You’ve Been To. But Derek Brookner, even before they know he’s Derek Brookner, feels like a test.
For one thing, he’s got some emotional whiplash courtesy of the swing between the intense power walk up to the scene of a brother officer’s murder and the revelation that Lanie is curiously conversant with tear-away pants. For another, there was definitely a Look exchanged between the good Detective and the Friendly Neighborhood ME that leaves him very interested in how much experience, individually and/or together, they may have preying on the Officer McNaughties of New York. That in turn, leaves him wondering if a stripper playing cop feels like another day at the office, and furthermore, do doctors play doctor? Falling down that rabbit hole serves as a brain-twisting reminder that he needs to restrict himself to workplace-appropriate wondering.
It’s not easy, though. Derek Brookner, from beyond the grave, is not making it easy. She’s entirely too blasé about the bachelorette paraphernalia, and it’s more than just her unflappable cop persona. She identifies and separates out the party attendee most likely to barf and passes her off to the boys before the festivities start. Her questions for Jamie Ruiz and Kathleen Park are even briefer and more pointed than usual. Her instincts for how to handle them, he’s dead certain, map back on to those six bridesmaid dresses. And when it’s clear that no one is impressed by his self-bestowed Assistant Volunteer Homicide Detective title—which, in retrospect, really could have used some workshopping—he finds himself semi-illegally wondering if she’s ever drunkenly told someone her life story, and just how many ill-advised pictures of her making duck lips are out there, awaiting excavation by a dedicated sleuth.
He’s not exactly sure where much of that falls on the good–respectful–faithful–decent continuum. Who Nikki was in her younger days and what she got up to with her girlfriends is certainly his business, and there’s an argument to be made that it’s just due diligence to determine her stance on brunch after a long night of tequila shots. There is, perhaps, less professional high ground when it comes to accompanying her to a strip club.
In his defense—if he needs a defense—the strip club is her idea, and he’s not sure he understands her angle. He’s pretty sure that the boys had not called not it, and he’s all but certain that’s because she had never even raised the possibility to them. She’d hand picked him, and how can he help but wonder why? It’s certainly punishment for daring to include homicide detective in the overly long title he’d dubbed himself wiith. But is that really all? It seems like that’s maybe not all.
She has dressed up for this—like really out-of-the-ordinary dressed up, and strip clubs may be terra nova for him, but is practically lingerie what the kids are wearing to strip clubs these days? Is she wearing what she would have worn to some of the clubs she’s been to? Or is it the opposite? Has she, instead tried for some kind of one-eighty from the ensembles favored in those infinitely more intriguing venues?
He’s well aware that he had rocketed right off the good–respectful–faithful–decent continuum here, but honestly. One minute she’s slapping him on the back and offering him singles, and the next she looks ready to take out the half dozen women swarming him with nothing more than a couple of drinking straws. The minute after that, she makes an ill-advised move on Hans Von Mannschaft all on her own, seemingly unaware of the vibe her outfit is laying down, and he’s not sure that your wingman on a typical strip-club jaunt needs to wield a fire extinguisher.
He’s happy to be along for the ride, even when she’s trying to punish him. He’s happy—always—to be along for the ride. But this particular ride really leaves him wondering.
A/N: Some might call Beckett's strip club jammies diaphanous; I know they are without morphousness.
