HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Casey Affleck, swamp pop singer Rod Bernard, Sid Bernstein, Joe Besser, Cantinflas, John Cazale, Kid Creole, Del The Funky Homosapien, Cecil B. DeMille, Leslie Duncan, George Hamilton, Roy Hay, Heintje, Mark Knopfler, Greg Langston (The Next, No Alternative), Ron Mael, Tiny McCloud, Pat Metheny, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Alexei Nikolaevich, Peter Ostroushko, Buck Owens, Marjorie Reynolds, Erwin Alexander Schrödinger, Lakeith Stanfield, Matt Thiessen (Reliant K), Stefanos Tsitsipas, Mladen Vukic, Porter Wagoner, Deborah Walley, Wednesday 13, Jane Wyatt, and recording artist, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Derrek Van Eaton. Classic rock-philes and deep Beatles fans will recognize him from the brother band Lon & Derrek Van Eaton. John Lennon and George Harrison “discovered” them and signed them to Apple Records. Their excellent BROTHER album was co-produced by George with Klaus Voorman and launched a long association with George, Ringo Starr, Nilsson, and other legends in the Apple story. The brothers went on to become studio session favorites under producer Richard Perry, who hired them for recordings with Art Garfunkel, Martha Reeves, and Carly Simon. As a duo, the Van Eaton brothers have released sporadic works (notably their acclaimed 1996 cover of “Apple of my Eye” on the COME & GET IT Badfinger tribute album), and they’re still active in musical and spiritual pursuits. I met Derrek some years ago in church and picked his brains about a 1972 L&DVE concert Huntingdon PA that I stood outside at (I was but a lad with no ticket money). The last time Derrek and I crossed paths was at a Monkees concert in Denver. Even in passing conversation I can see the creative spark in Derrek’s eyes. Here’s one of my favorite Van Eaton cuts “Sun Song” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5VSJmb2VI0 ...Meanwhile, HB DVE and thank you for your years of remarkable creativity and soul.

The 90's were actually quite surprisingly solid for a lot of superstars of the previous eras. Tom Jones, for instance, had the best 90's possible, his Reload became his biggest seller. However, his 90's paint a more complicated picture thanks to the records before, including The Lead And How To Swing It. The latter could be called an early attempt at Reload, but there were no guests and the tunes were not covers. Still, the production did bring Mr. Jones into the surroundings, where you can sense him thriving, though his surprising duet with Tori Amos pointed more towards the later triumphs. Neither of them could count the tune on the link among their best – by the way, I hear an echo of Sinead O'Connor in Amos' vocals –, which is why I regret they haven't worked since then.

I nearly forgot to do a music post tonight, and just as I was thinking that perhaps I could get in bed an hour early, maybe by 2:00 a.m., I realized why I thought I had extra time … I forgot the music post! I’m a bit frustrated on this, the fourth day of the new year, and so I went in search of a song with no deep meanings, just a bit of uplifting fun. And thus it happens that I am reduxing…

A Bowie Sakamoto meeting was a missed opportunity. Ringo Starr's Ringo – an apt title – is another one. The platter found him calling some friends, including his coworkers in the Beatles. While the LP established a template for a Starr album – a party with a lot of famous guests and Ringo as the host –, that one also contains a rare instance of all the Beatles being on the same album after the break-up. True, each of them guested separately, yet Ringo might have thought he could've patched things up … we can project too much in this. I mean, Let It Be already showed some hints how Beatles could've struggled during the 70's. Sure, Ringo was an opportunity for them to reconnect then, but we, yes, we have to be honest – we should be happy they didn't.
