i’m interested in this ask!
i wanna know about the sweet spot they had in their marriage, i just curious about RichardxElspeth fluff, yk?
*looks at Inbox*
Oof...
Uh... not much to say, really.
Elspeth had went through a severely traumatic event - and Richard could see how much it had affected her, so he decided to ease up on being a dick.
He'd help out with Zephyr and Octi. He'd wash stuff up. He'd handle a lot of stuff that men at the time... really didn't tend to.
And it honestly made Elspeth believe that Richard was someone she could've seen herself sending her life with. That he could change, could become a man worthy of her hand. They'd go to Procksy Bay, hang out at places they hadn't been to in years. They'd have fun, be in love. They'd be a family, be a couple.
...which is what led to them getting a bit friskier...
...and having Ciero.
And because Ciero's birth was also quite traumatic (honestly, only Elspeth's first and last pregnancy were easy for her), Richard still took the role of the perfect gentlemen.
And for a while, it all felt perfect.

Richard’s diabetes.
idk I was bored, anyway! @eldritch-hall-asylum look it's your horrible stinky guy!!!
(idk any dates, years or ages so if anything is inaccurate to the time, please tell me!!🙏🙏)
Richard Windroe (stinky!! horrid!! boo!! 👎👎🍅🍅)
* Richard would probably be diagnosed after (maybe?) falling into a diabetic coma due to hyperglycaemia.
* He probably tested via a blood glucose strip and correct with insulin if high/need be or eat some sugary snacks if low.
* I think he was be pretty bad at managing his diabetes; he'd go a while without checking his blood sugars and end up almost going into ketoacidosis or a diabetic coma. Elspeth has had to force-feed him sweet things and orange juice or correct his levels with insulting multiple times. He's pretty ableist, is he not, so wouldn't he have internalised ableism?
* His diabetes would probably be what caused his stroke (and, therefore, death)... thoughts on this because I'm unsure?...

sorry if this isn’t exactly what you wanted, idk if you wanted asks about them together or separate
did Richard ever get along, or try to bond, with his sons? Was there ever a time when he genuinely cared about their well-being and not just making them into carbon copies of himself?
There were a few times he got on with the kids.
When Zephyr got elected head of his student council, Richard definitely cared for him.
When Octavian was younger, he was really good at American Football, and Richard could bond with him over that.
Uh... Ciero... they'd talk at breakfast?
As for Favio. There was a time when an older boy was giving him (before he came out) a hard time. Harassing him. Following him. Basically, it got to the point of nearly breaking into Eldritch Hall. And Richard definitely wanted to protect his youngest then.

Richard, age 7, at a formal event in Procksy Bay: What are you doing?
Elspeth, also 7: My father says to never turn your back on anyone with a comparable family fortune!
Richard: You always do what Daddy says?
Elspeth: No!
Richard: Bet you do. Bet you're Daddy's little girl!

There's a couple lyrics in this song that reminds me of Elspeth so much. And I'm gonna ramble about it here for a second:
Under the cut for mentions of death, arranged marriage, and general mental health stuff.
"(Number one!)//I'm a girl in a world in which//My only job is to marry rich//My father has no sons so I'm the one who has to social climb for one//So I'm the oldest and the wittiest and the gossip in New York City is insidious//And Alexander is penniless//Ha, that doesn't mean I want him any less"
Right, so off the bat, this gives me the vibes of Elspeth on her wedding day, worrying about of she's making the right choice with Richard.
She doesn't love him - her heart belonged to River. But, she has to ensure that her family is kept successful. Both of her parents are only children. And she is the only one left carrying their name.
Elspeth and Richard are a pair of high class young people - both considered attractive in their time - and while they aesthetically would be a good couple, they are incompatible emotionally.
As, Elspeth is a free spirit - she doesn't like someone pulling on her reigns, so to speak. She needs to be free. And Richard doesn't offer her that.
River, however, does. He offers her freedom and fun; joy and energy. A wildness that her life has sorely lacked.
Richard would provide stability and a positive social standing. River would offer her freedom and an electric life.
Ultimately, she went with what was the best for her family, putting herself last.
"I remember that night, I just might//regret that night for the rest of my days"
This lyric also speaks to me. In its essence, it reminds me of the night that Elliot died. It basically secured Elspeth's fate.
Had he not died, had Elspeth stayed with her brother, he might not have made the choice that he did, which would have given Elspeth so much more freedom ultimately.
"He's after me because I'm a Schuyler sister//That elevates his status//I'd have to be naive to set that aside"
This lyric applies to both of Elspeth's youthful lovers. Both went after her for her status - although their intentions were entirely different.
See, Richard went after her to plant his family as one of higher social standing (because they were new money at the time). This class divide has always been prevalent in America, and shows itself in the Windroe Family in a multitude of ways.
River, however, decided to pursue Elspeth as a way to ensure his own survival. Marrying her would have been a way for him to have a sense of monetary stability that he sorely lacked as a child.
Both had their reasons for pursuing Elspeth and while neither were entirely from love, you can kind of see why they would do it.
"He will never be satisfied//I will never be satisfied"
Ultimately, Elspeth sides with her father. She marries Richard because it is the more logical choice for her family. And that is who she is always loyal to.
And the "he" holds two meanings here.
If "he" applies to Richard, then it means that no matter how much Elspeth tries, she will never conform to the incredibly outdated standards that Richard holds for her.
And she will never be happy with him. Because he isn't who she loves.
Whereas, if the lyric apied to River, then he would never be satisfied with her choice. He would never be satisfied, waiting for the happily ever after that never came.
And Elspeth would never be satisfied with herself for not taking the man she truly loved in her heart.
But hey, I'm just taking a song and applying it to my blorbos.

idk why but i feel like Richard would sound like Kevan Brighting (The Narrator from TSP). i know he’s not british but shhh let me have this.
i know Richard’s relationship with all his kids was strained, but was his relationship with Zephyr and Octavian less strained than with Ciero and Favio?
i mean Z and O were… “purpose kids” and C and F were there just for decoration (to put it nicely), so based from that i’d assume that Richard liked Zephyr and Octavian more. please correct me if i’m wrong!
(...Octi was a bit of an oops baby too (at least, for Elspeth)).
His relationship with Zephyr was... Fine. There weren't any strong feelings. They were just... Fine.
Octavian and him kept butting heads. Fighting about anything and everything.
His relationship with Ciero was weak, to say the least. Ciero was the opposite of the son he wanted (I mean, she's only a son part-time, so...). A bit nerdy, wimpy. Uh... that's it.
Richard saw Favio as something to protect. In that kinda toxic dad-daughter way (before he came out). Not a person in his own right. It was very demeaning, patronising. Because Favio wanted to climb trees, too, dad! He wanted to catch frogs with Octavian!
Uh... that's it.

if Richard and Elspeth knew each other from when they were young, what was their relationship like back then? with two clashing personalities i can only assume they had their rough patches
Well, as little kids (like, 7/8), they had somewhat similar interests. They liked roughly the same books.
Wizard of Oz, Narnia, etc. They'd talk about that.
They did get along somewhat. They'd play games when Elliot was too ill, or too busy studying.
Unfortunately, as they grew older, they kinda... didn't keep in touch and just became their own people?
Richard got more influenced by his father and brothers.
Elspeth saw how her own family worked, saw it was kinda fucked up and said "hm. Yeah. I'll try not to be that."
As they grew older, it became more of an "Ugh, why are you like that?!" kinda thing.

alternate universe time! >:D
if Richard was more SlayTM than he actually was (as in, maybe he realises he’s traumatising his kids because of his own trauma and works to better himself and break the cycle of abuse), what things would’ve changed?
Had he actually recognised his own misogyny?
Probably, things would have been different from the beginning.
He would have realised "Oh shit, my wife is going through a lot. Maybe I shouldn't be a dick".
I feel that the kids would've all came out sooner than they did.
Richard might not have died.
And, sadly...
...Elspeth wouldn't have her boy toy, Frankie.
But most of all...
...we wouldn't have Ciero and Favio.
Ciero was born to "replace" the child they lost.
And Favio was... a happy accident to celebrate her starting daycare.
So...
Yeah.

i’m actually more interested in Richard than Elspeth, sorry lol
what was his relationship with his kids like? i wanna know if my reblog was correct lmfao /hj
oh! would he have had a good relationship with Lydia (if she survived) considering she’s not his biological child?
With his kids, the relationship was somewhat strained because they were all fairly independent - taking so much after their mother. To the point where his brain could not compute why they weren't liking him.
I mean, he created them! They had to like him.
Not knowing the reason they enjoyed being with Elspeth was because Elspeth is a good parent.
I feel like Lydia would have been the most butch of the kids, so in some ways, yes?
But also, there would be that level of "this kid isn't my own dna" that he may never be able to get past.
So, while I feel that Richard would have a good relationship with Lydia had she survived, there would definitely be some sort of... thing keeping them from having a fully normal father-child relationship.

sure i can certainly try (asks might be slow, i’m trying to write something for the super sad Ciero AU i made)
was there ever a point when Elspeth and Richard got along? like, when they didn’t want to rip eachother’s guts out?
Probably when they were younger (like, seven or so).
The two of them were kinds chill? Because their families went to Procksy Bay together when they were younger.
As for after marriage...
...probably roughly around when Ciero was born. That was kind of a sweet spot.
From, like, a couple years before to about a year after? Yeah, times were good.
After that, though? Not much, really.

My favourite thing is that all of Richard's grandkids would piss him off in some way.
Like, Bentley is an agender kid that loves computers and science.
Olly is a mixed poc lesbian, dating a white passing Native Canadian ace lesbian.
And Jack K is adopted, a stem major, polyamorous, bi, trans, black, and blind.
And honestly? Fucking rad.
Also, his wife ends up with a short guy.

[Elspeth is getting ready to go out. She turns to Richard]
Elspeth: Richard, you take care of my mother!
Richard: Oooo-kay!
[He grabs a pillow from the sofa and begins to head off to Linore's bedroom. Elspeth realises what he's doing and stops him]
Elspeth: Nonono, don't kill my mother, just literally take care of her.

Richard: My mother is where my loyalties lie, that is who my priority is!
Elspeth: Not the mother of your children?
Richard: Don't bring the boys into this.
Elspeth: Alright. Not the woman you married!
Richard: I refuse to be blamed any longer for this grotesque misalliance! I wash my hands of it!
