You’re upset about the lack of tree-realism in a book that is, by genre, magical realism? Bored by family history... in a book where that is at its very core? A book about history, and immigration, and the way events from before you were even conceived can haunt your family? Awkward prose, by an author who is reknowned for her nearly poetic way with words? Annoyed by the pseudo-philosophizing... when the author is literally known for that???

Book should be getting actual criticism, not insubstantial snarky commentary that ultimately boils down to people reading the wrong genre. What was awkward about the prose? What was ahistorical or “too neutral” in your opinion? What substance did the characters lack according to you? Obviously, you don’t have to enjoy every piece of literature you touch, but you should elaborate on what was so bad about it.

#this is absolutely just a vent over something that annoyed me when I saw it last week and to be clear #I love the exact things being ripped on in this review. Which is fine! I may have bad taste; I'm okay with that #however; what I am not okay with (though it's entirely beyond me) is insubstantial commentary #if you hate something and you want to fume about it; you should be able to articulate yourself in more detail #I have an absolutely scathing review for another book in my drafts as of 3 years and I haven't had the gal to publish that #and my review is actually detailed on how the plot is insane; the characters are beyond stupid - not 'emotional' - actually stupid #and the prose itself was nothing special but the author did have a neat tricks I appreciated even if it was all a dumpster fire #like for fuck's sake. has goodreads always been equivalent to the YouTube comments section? #ok. rant over. i may be wrong here and i'm okay with that. #p: mine
