Golden Delight, 8479 Garvey Ave, Ste 101A, Rosemead, CA 91770
Tumblr media
Golden Delight is an upscale yet still reasonably priced Vietnamese and Cantonese restaurant. The menus are so thick with full color pictures. Typically there’s one or two items per page. One menu booklet has Vietnamese food (pho, noodle soups, vermicelli bowls, summer rolls, curry, fish) and the other menu booklet has Chinese food (e.g., peking duck, noodle soup, Hainan chicken).
Bun rieu ($13.50) also called ground shrimp, egg, and tomato soup with vermicelli: What they served looked a lot like the bun rieu menu picture: two cubes of pork blood, fried tofu cubes, large pieces of tomato, a meatloaf cube made out of pork and crab, slices of cha lu, big pieces of bone in pork that had been simmered in broth for hours, a medium thin rice vermicelli, and a clear broth. They served it with a plate of fresh herbs, bean sprouts, cabbage, jalapenos, and a lime wedge and a dish with fish sauce, chili sauce, and shrimp paste. I was hungry but could only get through half the bowl of bun rieu. It was loaded with noodles and the other things I mentioned. The broth was very nice – slightly sweet from the tomatoes, slightly funky from the fish sauce and fermented shrimp paste, light but flavorful. The noodles were nice – separated, not overcooked, soft. The pork on the boiled bones was tough though and the tofu puffs just seemed like empty fried shells. The crab flavor was on the weak side.
It’s brightly lit, large restaurant with a fish tank by the door and huge flatscreens that show someone cooking some of their dishes. They play piano lounge instrumental music. It’s relaxing. They have large tables so it looks like a good place for banquets and large gatherings.
Golden Delight has its own parking behind the restaurant. Service was slower than usual for a Vietnamese restaurant. I went during an off peak time and a lot of people were dining there. Must be a popular place.

From “Ally McBeal” to “Elementary” “Kill Bill Vol. 1,” “Charlie’s Angels” and Steven Soderbergh’s
“Presence,” Lucy Liu has created memorable characters, and the actor is also an accomplished artist. But, as Gold House readies to bestow her with the Legend award May 11 at the Gold Gala, she says, “It’s so moving. To be honored among your peers and the Asian community, in general, is a destination. It’s a little bit like your family and your family that you may not know. There’s a feeling of pride, and this extension of culture, which is different from the people that you work with that are not necessarily from the same place. I know from my life, my parents were not really that into this career, so it’s very touching.”
Liu spoke with Variety ahead of the Gold Gala to reflect on her recent and upcoming projects, painting and why telling the story of “Rosemead” matters.
What makes you say yes to a project?
It’s about the people and the creative part of doing something with them because you’ve worked so closely with them, and sometimes you never see them again. But that’s the greatness that I want to achieve, just to be surrounded by creative people. There’s an openness to that, and I appreciate it when somebody has a point of view.
Last year, you directed an episode of “American Born Chinese,” and over the years, you’ve directed some episodes of TV, is that something you’d like to explore? [Creator] Kelvin Yu did such an incredible job working on that and making it culturally relevant and zeitgeisty. I love directing, but I think for me, for now, I want to spend the time being creative as opposed to trying to wrangle everybody together.
You have two very different films coming up, “Red One” and “Rosemead.” What can you tell us about them? “Red One” is a big commercial movie with Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. It’s exciting to be able to be fluid in a creative way, and it doesn’t matter what the scope is.
“Rosemead” is something I produced and have been working on for the last five years. It’s a true story and very low budget, but such an important story about mental health. It’s fun to be able to be in this world and tell important stories and to entertain people.
Five years is a long time. What kept you going in order to get “Rosemead” completed?
Mental health is not something that’s discussed in a lot of cultures, and I can only speak for Asian culture, which is what this revolves around. It’s something that people are embarrassed about, ashamed of, and don’t want to recognize or acknowledge, and people are losing their lives because of that.
To me, this is an important enough subject matter that it’s worth putting everything on the line [for] and putting it out there. Even if one person sees it, that’s all that matters.
If I saw this, and if I was struggling, I would feel seen by a crew of people [who] put themselves out there. The way that I grew up, I didn’t feel seen. It’s crucial to recognize that people are under a great deal of stress, but it also creates a tsunami effect on your children, family and everyone around you.
Do you still find time to paint?
Yes, I’ve been working in the studio for a long time, and it’s a very important part of expression. It’s just like breathing, you just do it. But it’s also terrifying because you’re generally used to working on your own in the studio, and then you go out and you’re working with a crew, and then you get used to being in that group. It’s a really strange feeling of isolation, and then feeling untethered. I think that’s a good thing. I think fear is a reminder of your ego, and to be free, you have to let go of everything. That’s what art is, absolute freedom.

We are bottling our rose mead, Oracle, today! This is a type of mead known as a rhodomel. Ours has a little residual sweetness but not too much. It is easy to sip or pair with a meal. Rhodomel is made from honey and rose petals. It is back on Vinoshipper. Hold off on ordering if you also want our lavender mead because we may bottle it tomorrow. #vawine #mead #rhodomel #rosemead #roses #honey #weship #flowermeads #meadery #gotmead #gotwine #25years #hilltop #nelson151 (at Hill Top Berry Farm Winery and Meadery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpficO4u_Q8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

EAT Bistro, 8168 Garvey Ave, Ste b, Rosemead, CA 91770
Tumblr media
EAT Bistro is a Hong Kong style café (similar to a diner) with mostly Chinese dishes plus “Western” style breakfast items. Breakfast is served till 11:30 AM and lunch from 11:30 AM onwards. There are two distinct menus, one for breakfast and one for lunch. For breakfast, choose from porridge/congee, noodle soup, chow fun, chow mein, omelets, instant noodle in soup, sandwiches, etc. For the breakfast special, you can choose a porridge and a side dish (chow mein, vermicelli, turnip cake, rice noodle with mix sauce, Chinese donut), and your choice of hot coffee or tea. For lunch, choose from salads, sandwiches, curry, steak and seafood, baked rice, macaroni, noodle soup, porridge, fried rice, noodles, stir fries, hot pots, etc.
Preserved egg with pork porridge ($11.50) with rice noodle rolls and hot tea. It was a lot of food for a reasonable price. The bowl of rice porridge was big and the porridge was thick. It was more flavorful than average but hardly any preserved egg. The pieces of preserved egg were tiny too. The pork was marinated (it seemed very flavorful) but too salty. The porridge was topped with fresh scallions.
Rice noodle rolls with mixed sauce: very saucy and served very hot, this was good though I’ve had better. I like how they sprinkled the rolls with sesame seeds. The two sauces were a sweet hoisin sauce and a rich peanut sauce.
Pineapple buns with butter (2 for $4.50): best thing I had. The buns were crispy and sweet on top and soft on the bottom. Served warm with sliced butter sandwiched in the middle.
I didn't see HK milk tea on the Chinese side of the breakfast menu but most people there were drinking some.
Service was pretty awful. No one acknowledged me when I walked in and stood by the door for a few minutes. They forgot my rice noodle rolls and my pineapple buns. I saw patrons getting their own to go boxes and sauces. They must be regulars who know that the service is slow. The place was dirty and they used part of the dining area for storage.
Parking was easy to find in the strip mall.
