“Safety dance” by Men without Hats is Flynn’s personal mambo no 5 moment. He’s played it so many times that Alan is considering corporate murder. Roy is the only one keeping him from doing this. Lora doesn’t see what the big deal is, the songs catchy. But she’s all the way in a sub basement she doesn’t have to hear it 24/7.

Angstpril Day Fifteen: Lost In My Mind

“Alan?” Roy pops his head into the next cubicle over. “Have you seen—Alan? Hey!”

Alan startles when Roy raps on his desk. His face turns red when he finally looks up.

“Sorry,” he says.

Roy snorts. He starts to ask what had him so distracted in the first place, but then he hears it—Lora and Flynn laughing together from somewhere down the hall. 

He bites back a frown.

Roy knows that Alan likes Lora. He’d planned on asking her out before Flynn beat him to it. ENCOM’s latest happy couple has been together for months now—and Alan is miserable.

“You’ve gotta stop torturing yourself,” Roy says.

“Yeah.” Alan looks at the screen instead of him. “I’m pathetic.”

“You’re not pathetic. You’re human, like the rest of us.”

As if that’s supposed to make him feel better.

“Did you need something?” Alan asks, eager to change the subject. 

“Uh, it can wait,” Roy says, looking at something to his left. Then, before Alan can respond, he escapes back to his own cube. 

Moments later, another face appears in the doorway.

“Good morning, Alan,” Lora greets. She leans against the partition, all casual grace, her hands cradling a coffee mug. 

She does this sometimes—stops by for just a moment before heading back downstairs. Alan smiles. It’s far too easy to smile at her.

“Good morning, Dr. Baines.” 

Her own smile warms as she watches him over the rim of her drink. 

“You can call me Lora, Alan.” 

“Good morning, Lora,” he says softly. She grins again, and then she’s gone. 

Alan waits until he hears her retreating footsteps to thunk his head against the desk. 

He’s in so much trouble.

The way it works on most computers, when you "delete" a file or program (including emptying the "recycle bin" in Windows), it's not actually instantly erased from the memory on the hard drive. It just means that the part of the memory that's occupied by the file/program is marked as being available to be overwritten by new data if necessary. The deleted object becomes part of the "free memory" on the hard drive, in other words. This is why it's possible to perform "data recovery" of deleted files, if you can locate the part of the memory that they were stored in, and they haven't been overwritten with new data yet. It also means that if you really want something to be truly, irrevocably removed from your computer memory, you can use "file shredder" software to make sure that it's overwritten (but even then, there are apparently some advanced data recovery techniques that might be able to recover the erased stuff, completely or partially).

What would this mean in the Tron universe? If we assume that "derez" is just another word for "delete", it could be possible that the Programs we see getting "killed" might be "resurrected" through data recovery. When we see Programs fade away, maybe they've just been relocated to some kind of shadowy limbo in the system memory, awaiting their final overwriting by new data.

Take poor Ram, for example. When Flynn has returned to the Real World after his adventures, it might be possible for him to restore the friendly actuarial Program if he can locate the memory in which he was stored (which shouldn't be too hard for a genius programmer/hacker, right?). He would have to be quick about it, however, since I imagine that deleted files could be overwritten fairly soon in a big corporate network with multiple Users like the ENCOM system. Once he's gotten over the thrill of being back home and having defeated Dillinger, I'd like to think that he hurries over to a computer in the empty offices and does his best to restore his digital companion during the same night, since it might be too late once the building opens for business the next day. I'm sure Roy Kleinberg would appreciate it as well.

I also like to imagine what would happen if you're not quick enough to restore a derezzed program, if their data has already been partially overwritten. Would they show up missing an arm or a leg, or a chunk of their head? Would their mind have been altered in some way?

This could also mean that the digital world has their own versions of "ghosts", depending on what happens to derezzed-but-not-yet-overwritten Programs. Maybe there are stories going around about feeling the presence of dead Programs in places where they used to live, or seeing shadowy images of them in the corner of your eye, or hearing their voices whisper from far away.

Also, in this case a "file shredder" Program would probably be a pretty intimidating figure: A sinister "ghost hunter" who goes around the system, with the goal of making sure that the dead stay dead, their memories and secrets being buried with them.

Holiday Edcanons

Since tis' the season and it's the first day of Chanukah, here are some thoughts...

(mun likes the idea of the the Dillingers being Jewish (re: this post) but is not Jewish and wants to be respectful... Please lmk if any of these head canons go into antisemitism territory and I'll amend them...)

Gets hit with holiday depression HARD

His mother observed all the jewish holidays and even though Chanukah is a minor one went all out primarily because they "gotta compete with and drown out the other winter holiday.

Mother used to take him out for Chinese food on Christmas day during the years when his father was in prison.

Ed lights a menorah but either keeps it on the coffee table or his home office window which faces the back yard because he doesn't want to draw attention to it. It helps keep the holiday depression.

Dillinger Sr. is secular Jewish, and does not observe any Jewish customs. Grandma and Grandpa Dillinger used to be religious but became secular shortly after moving to the UK in an attempt to fit in. Because off this, Dillinger Sr. did not really celebrate any of the Jewish holidays, major or minor.

As a result, the only holiday Ed celebrated while living with his father was New Year.

Goes to the temple around the major holidays and Chanukah in an attempt to reconnect with that part of his culture. Most of the reason he doesn't go more often is because he's not particularly religious, but another bit is the one time he ran into Roy Kleinberg. Nothing bad happened, but he tries to avoid anyone associated with Flynn because of ~family history~.

Grudgingly attends Mackey's Christmas parties for the shortest amount of time that is socially acceptable, only because they are mandatory, then makes off with a small snack and a drink to hide in his office with.

Is the reigning champion of the Ugly Holiday Sweater contest at said parties. They're all hand knit from a nice wool yarn, though Ed would never admit to making them even if his life depended on it. This is the only part of the holiday celebrations that Ed willingly participates in. His sweaters are usually a mix of computer and generic winter themed, but could pass as a holiday sweater if you squinted.
