does she have a violent heart or is she a teenager who was born and grew up in a bitterly cruel world? does she have a violent heart or is she constantly surrounded by violence and raised by people who often used violence as a means to survive, raised by a father-like figure who struggled how to properly grieve and taught her to just move on instead of fully processing that already by the age of 14 she's seen way too much shit no one should have to see in their entire lives?

there's a limit on how much you can be an isekai intellectual...
a bunch of analyses have been popping up before me all day so i wanted to throw my hat into the ring. all love to ppl who are exercising their creative minds + ppl like geoff here who just talk about these things because of fan interest but i feel like there reaches a point where exploring the "types" of isekai is pointless? i've seen ppl list out the different types of villainess revenge isekai or fantasy mmorpg isekai but eh why fit them all into separate boxes like that?
i think it's easier to think of isekai as a "type" (genre) of itself with only two categories: 1) a focus on isekai (lit. another world) 2) tensei (lit. to be reborn). this allows for a variety of applications and thus tropes that ppl see so many trends of!
with isekai - in another world
you see everything from:
pure fantasy (inuyasha, digimon wait maybe not the best example but in my childhood mind i count digimon as pure fantasy, fushigi yugi)
mmorpg inspired fantasy/adventure (.hack//legend of twilight, sao ugh, log horizon, overlord (LOVE OVERLORD!)
otome game-esque worlds >>> this is where it gets complicated with "villainess routes" since i admit there are multiple villainess tropes but this is why it's nice to not think of this as a "sub-type/genre" bc it frees you from those complications! (the saint's magic power is omnipotent, the white cat's revenge as plotted from the dragon king's lap soso cute!, the savior's book cafe in another world, i'm a villainous daughter so i'm going to keep the last boss wait i can't remember if she's reborn in this one lmaooo see this is why rules make everything hard)
with tensei storylines - being reincarnated/reborn in another world as *insert character/role*
you see...
the same tropes!!
pure fantasy (a returner's magic should be special, reminiscence adonis, the lady and the beast, light and shadow, i can't think of a manga off the top of my head for this ah)
mmorpg inspired fantasy/adventure (so i'm a spider so what i stan kumoko so hard, her majesty's swarm, can't name another off the top of my head ah i hate lists shorter than two things...)
self-insert based games/novels (fiance's observation log of a self-proclaimed villainess, who made me a princess, death is the only ending for the villainess, the villainess wants to marry a commoner, honestly games vs novels are different applications but i'm not in the headspace to try to remember a bunch of both lol)
*insert line break to give random ppl a break from scrolling but tl; dr just enjoy things for what they are no need to micro analyze*
similar variations occur in both genres (if ppl want to be super technical i guess i'm arguing that isekai itself is a massive genre that has the "another world" subgenre and "reincarnation" subgenre tl; dr) so i think it's honestly a huge pain to try to separate all these trends into so many different types of stories. for me personally it's easier to not get overwhelmed by this gigantic umbrella of "isekai" that spans light novels, manhwa, manga, and mobile games by just stripping each story down into its trademark tropes (aka character archetypes, story structures) and slapping "oh this is a person going to a world that's not ours" and "this person gets reborn as blank in another world". none of this "omg this power fantasy is such a this kind of isekai moment" or "there are 14 different types of villainess revenge stories and this series fits into this" bc AH labels! limitations! circle-jerks via ppl trying to compartmentalize everything and sound smart for leaving a comment on story analysis instead of ooh-ahhing over a character's face! dividing things into light novel manga vs manga vs korean manhwa ft. female characters!
the last bit is mainly why i feel frustrated by ppl's insistence to group everything?
the video linked at the beginning of the post (honestly good video essay, i enjoyed it, i just kept thinking in my head the whole time "marimo these are tropes do not take the genre talk literally") has a baby comment thread talking about "korean isekai manhwas" as a genre featuring nothing but reincarnated villainess' and i can't.
like i cannot acknowledge that as a genre of any sort. the energy i felt reading through some of those insights takes me back to 2012 when all yt americans discovered k-pop and deemed all korean music k-pop from then on! (ppl still do this now, yes you are seen and don't talk to me pls i don't like you. k-pop is korean pop music and nothing less and nothing more. take a few seconds and try to parse apart aspects of korean culture instead of slamming everything into a monolithic label that has the letter k and a hyphen.) it feels so odd to see a bunch of young ppl on ig and tiktok acknowledge korean media that happens to be in the form of a webtoon as "oh stories all about young girls becoming villains in stories they made/played" bc it feels so reductive u.u
(positionality disclaimer that i'm praying isn't actually necessary: i am a 3rd-generation korean of japanese descent do not fite me i am exhausted irl of ppl asking for validation/verification bc massive shove off.)
breaking news! korean manhwa...is just as multifaceted as japanese manga...bc how can comics as an art-form not have multiple genres...huh such a shocker?!?! same likely applies to media in other parts of the world like chinese manhwa and french comics--not my place to explain either of those i just know those industries exist bc of wakfu and donghua shows by Tencent.
at the end of the day it's not like analyzing any kind of isekai is wrong--absolutely not!! i think it can be super fun to think about how isekai elements complicate a story (MCs trying to go back home, ppl from the og world, reincarnation plot-twists) or maybe even bash a series for including some kind of other world element when they could have just written a super fun fantasy.
insert marimo's brief ramble that hey you can get sick of truck-kun's hitting disillusioned guys who happen to be super duper smart or girls who happen to be master chefs/craftsmen but transporting a fully-grown being into a fantasy setting is the ultimate cheat code for making mundane modern technology seem cool and overpowered, and being reincarnated as a fully grown person in a world with a pre-made story/game set-up completely bypasses the need for an author to slowly flesh out world-building in a natural progression so isekai is actually a really smart writing tool it's just that there are some series where the author didn't use it well at all and it's cheesy or clearly isekai was misused as a vehicle for character/story development and it was pointless *DEEP BREATH OUT*
in this essay i will argue...lol i am such a culture studies major!! if i were an english major i would be talking all about writing but here i am having a side-tangent about world-building via someone being reborn wow i love this for me (don't get me started on when an author has someone reincarnate as a baby and the story is mostly them having warm fluffy moments with their family--typically father figures--and getting lots of powers i could and would and probably will rant about east asian toxicity)
but anyway am i crazy????? like yes for being passionate about the technical use of a word like genre (i am a scorpio rising let me be fussy pls) but i don't think it's a lot to ask for ppl to not unironically see "villainess revenge isekai" as the definition of korean manhwa.
idk as someone who resonates with why japanese isekai is so popular domestically + why a lot of korean manhwa feat. the same tropes (it's not for great reasons lads it's actually depressing tbh) i'm just starting to feel kind of pained by the generalization and need to separate "cute japanese girl in an otome game"/"japanese boy finds a harem in another world" from "korean girl dies and comes back as a villainess" bc they are just! applications to the same story device!!
recommendations for any who makes it this far down below <3
// also gladly recommend any of the examples i've listed in the above rant as i've read/watched all of them and adore them v much! //
save me princess
super refreshing fantasy manhwa ft. a princess and her ex-boyfriend having to save the world!
the beginning after the end
an AMERICAN web novel turned into a comic (but see it being not korean/japanese doesn't really matter when you just consider isekai as a genre...isn't it nice to not overthink it?) ft. a super-powerful wizard king reincarnated into another world and starting from scratch--gives mushoku tensei vibes but huge twists!
the reason why raeliana ended up at the duke's mansion
love love LOVE this story--read the title and you'll learn how this girl reincarnated as the character raeliana in a book gets married to a duke!
trash of the count's family
such a good novel!! a guy gets reborn as a lazy oaf and he takes the hero of the story under his wing...plot twists come up later on!
this time i will definitely be happy!
v good and refreshing for a shorter series! she's been reborn 3 times and remembers every time the hero's stabbed her in the back, and now she just wants to break up with him!
silver diamond
older manga but v good adventure w intrigue! a boy who loves plants get sucked into a desert world with demonic lizards and a mysterious bodyguard by his side. shonen-ai not BL but wonderful vibes nonetheless + great side characters!
the princess imprints a traitor
adore everything in this from the world (not in that way this society makes me so angry) to the machinations at play and the dynamic between the fl and ml

No Regrets - Bellamy Blake
Request: Can you do one where you and Bell have been friends for forever and then u guys have a one night stand and agree to pretend it never happened but you realize you have feelings for him and you end up confessing them pleaseeee Requested by: Anonymous Pairing: Bellamy Blake x Reader A/N: This sounded pretty cool and its like 9:00pm where I am so I was like sure. Warnings: Lol like you care tho. Kinda smut.

“Come on.” You whispered frustrated, as you saw the back of a male facing away from you. “You couldn’t keep it in your pants, could you?” You said sarcastically to the sleeping person. You scrambled to your feet and scavenged for your clothes which happened to be in all different sides of the room.
See this is what happens when you drink on Unity Day, Y/N. You thought to yourself. You struggled to put on your reeking clothes, that made you gag when your top slipped over your head. You really needed to wash those clothes. You were yet to see the persons face and quite frankly, you didn’t really want to. As you were leaving, the hangover you had developed decided to let you remember your night.
“Bellamy! Baby!” You called over to your best friend, your tipsy figure stumbling as you walked. He playfully groaned but chuckled slightly to show he was only kidding.
“Y/N, How many times have I told you this? Don’t call me baby..” He huffed, you giggle at his frustration and hand him a drink. He just stares at it.
“Drink it!” He rose a questioning eyebrow. “You’ll be as fun as me!” You exclaimed
“I think I’ll pass.” He grabs the cup and pours the drink on ground beside him. You clench your jaw and gasp.
“If you don’t drink this, I’ll call you Baby Bestie Blake forever.” You were being stubborn, this wasn’t surprising though.
“Fine,” and with that, he snatched a drink from you and gulped it down.
The rest of the night seemed blurry and there were missing parts to the story, but you remember the last thing you did, your regret.
“Are you,” you whispered as a set of soft lips sucked your sensitive neck, “Are you sure?” You finished, you were a mess. A vulnerable mess. But you felt guilty that you were enjoying this whole scene unravel.
The boy’s head lifted up, your eyes meeting his. Bellamy? Drunk Y/N already knew this was him but hangover Y/N was still adjusting.
“Yes, I’m sure.” He nodded and you returned the action.
He went for your tank top’s finish and pulled it off you. Your bra was already loose from Bellamy’s previous action. You went for your jeans but Bellamy stopped you.
“I’ll do it,” He ordered, and he peeled of jeans easily, you taking his T-Shirt in the process.
“Oh, little one,” He said watching you stand uncomfortably in front of him, only having thin panties to cover you. Your crossed arms covered your breasts and pulled them away, kissing your chest.
“I just want you,” You expressed to him. He smiled and took off his jeans bring you close to him. He pecked your lips quickly, the feeling of his lips felt better than it probably should have, for a one night stand.
“I’ll make you feel beautiful, because you are,” And then you proceeded your night in the direction it was most likely heading.
“Fuck,” You heard from behind you. You turned around to see him sitting up, he still didn’t know it was you until you met eachother glances.
“Oh my god!” he yelled and had a look of disgust on his face. “Did we?”
“Fuck? Did we fuck? Yeah we did, Bellamy.” You snapped, frustration was all you could feel.
“No, no no no. I didn’t want this to happen! Not with you!” he yelled. Your heart snapped and it was then that you realised you were the one who wasn’t hating the whole idea of them together. He didn’t feel the same. “Ugh you screwed up everything!” He screamed at you, tugging at the ends of his hair.
“Me? What did I fucking do?” You spat, you did nothing wrong, right?
“You got me drunk, Y/N,” He stresses, folding his arms, “Its like you wanted this to happen!” Bellamy was just growing worse.
“You know what, its ironic. When you try to be a protective friend when someone tries to fuck me. But when it’s you screwing me, well! That’s a different story, isn’t it?” You ranted, pacing back and forth. He just stared at you, but you knew he was listening to everything you said. “You can’t blame someone else because you don’t want to take the heat Bellamy! That’s cowardice! I will take half the blame for this, so don’t rat me out to everyone saying I forced myself onto you or some bullshit story.” By now you were fuming, your gestures just grew into large exaggerating movements. It was silent in the tent before Bellamy spoke up.
“I uh,” he scraped the back of his neck, “I think we should forget this and pretend it never happened,” You just narrowed your eyes at him.
“Whatever you say, boss.” And you stormed off in anger. I hate Bellamy Blake.
—-
It was 2 hours later. Saying you regretted lashing out at Bellamy like that was an understatement. You were devastated. He probably thought you were a psychopath now. Or maybe it was the fact that you didn’t regret your one night stand.
You always thought of you and Bellamy as friends and nothing more but ever since you got to the ground, things changed and I guess you could say that you both matured in various ways. But regardless of your attraction to your friend, you were mad at him nonetheless. It’s true, he was always blaming others for his jackass actions and never admits to anything.
Bellamy, little did you know, was also angry at himself. He liked you more than a friend but unlike your feelings, his developed before you landed on earth. Your friendship on the Ark always meant more to him and you couldn’t see that.
His nickname for you was what he always wanted to call his girlfriend or wife, but you didn’t know that. So he gave you the nickname. It being “Little One”,
Bellamy’s mind then started go crazy, his heart felt like it would leap out of his chest any second and that’s when he realised it. He heart was breaking. He loved you.
So without hesitation he marched to your shared tent with Octavia.
“Y/N?” Bellamy asked, spotting you in the corner, your front facing the walls of the tent.
“She doesn’t want to speak with you,” The younger Blake said to her brother.
“Well, uh, she doesn’t have too,” Bellamy stated confidently, “She can just listen.”
“So. there’s no subtle way of saying this but, here goes, I like you. Okay? I like you, I might even love you, but I’m a selfish jackass that doesn’t accept his own consequences that doesn’t deserve you.” He confessed, shaking a little. “I know I stuff up all the time, but I need you, Y/N. I can’t do this without you.” His eyes tried to fight the drowning sensation they were suffering.
Your emotions couldn’t handle his poetic words much longer. All this time, he liked you?
“Shut up,” You spat, Octavia was just watching the dramatic scene unfold in front of her like a TV show.
“Wh-wha?” You cut Bellamy off again,
“Shut up, before I do it myself with my lips!” You yelled, before pulling him into a hug.
“I’m so sorry.” Bellamy whispered in you ear. “I-I love you,” You broke away from the hug and smiled.
“I love you so much,” You said before kissing him, passionately.
“She shut you up with her lips!” Octavia called and the couple chuckled before sitting down. —– The End (That was super shutting but it’s 11:00 and I have been perculating ideas for 2 hours so…)

Marinette DC in reply to Adrien Agreste @adrienagreste Thanks, Adrien :D

It wasn’t the first time Adrien had tweeted to Marinette, but God, every time he did, the girl felt like she was walking on clouds. It was like clockwork: one sleepy Marinette posts a barely-finished design idea, people like it, Adrien tweets her, and Marinette inevitably spends the next twenty minutes waltzing around her room and sending incoherent texts to Alya.
“He said it looks fantastic, Tikki!” Marinette cried, side-stepping a small pile of fabric scraps, “Adrien said my drawing looks fantastic.”
“Yes, Marinette. I was there, remember?”
“But Tikki! This is Adrien!” Tikki could hardly keep her amused snorts down, eyeing her starry-eyed charge as she continued to dance in her room. The last time something like this had happened, Tikki was napping and was rudely awoken by Marinette’s shrieks of unbridled joy.
Sometimes, it was hard for the kwami to make the distinction between her lovable (but still flighty and just a little Adrien-crazed) Marinette and her lovable, brave, and still flighty and just a little Adrien-crazed Ladybug. The girl wasn’t particularly talented at keeping her feelings for the boy at bay when she was on the job, luckily, she hardly ever sees him in the midst of an akuma attack.
And speaking of keeping her feelings for Adrien under wraps while still transformed.
“Marinette, are you sure this whole blogging business is a good idea?” Tikki hadn’t been able to voice her concerns before, as she was sucked up into the earrings before she could even make sense of what Marinette was doing.
All Tikki knew was that Ladybug had an Official Blog that was run by Ladybug herself.
Tikki wasn’t too sure if this was a good idea.
“It’ll be fine, Tikki!” Marinette reassured, lazily waving her hand at her kwami, “It’s not like I’ll be posting selfies regularly.”
“Last night, you transformed for the sole purpose of taking a selfie,” Tikki deadpanned.
“Details!” Marinette said, “It was for proof that this blog belongs to Ladybug. I won’t make a habit out of it, I promise.”
Tikki knew Marinette, and while she did trust her to protect Paris on the regular from the one particular jewelry-obsessed villain, she wasn’t sure that Marinette would be able to run and blog and not give out too much information. But if Marinette said that it’d be okay, then she really had no other option but to have faith in her charge.
After all, what’s the worse thing that could possibly happen?

Subject: Blogging for Dummies
Hello, all. Lovely day we’re having, no? Well at least, it’s nice where I live. If you live somewhere where the sun isn’t shining or its gloomy/snowing/raining, then I’m sending some positive vibes your way.
It’s been a few days since I’ve joined this blogging platform thing and I find myself at a disadvantage: what could a superhero possibly blog about without giving out too much information about herself. I’m sure Chat Noir is dying to fuss at me for creating this blog, but I’ll take care of that when the time comes LOL.
Provided that someone gets akumatized and I am forced to take a break from my totally normal life as a Parisian adolescent (you already knew that) and resume my role as Ladybug.
I’m just ranting at this point, honestly.
I just wanted to give an update, say hey, and ask what am I supposed to be talking about on a blog that isn’t too revealing :’)

Subject: Quasimodo deserved better
[Photo]
Isn’t the Seine gorgeous at this time of the day? I don’t get to come here often with my schedule, but when I do...it’s probably my favorite place to think by myself.
Oh! Greetings from Notre-Dame!
Fun fact: The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of my favorite Disney movies (though if we’re being real here, the actual book is downright depressing.) Anyway, I spent the afternoon binging Disney movies and took a break after the Hunchback of Notre Dame to get some air.
It got me thinking: Do you ever think about the semi-adult themes that older Disney films used to have?
You’re not going to see some creepy old man exploiting his power to force himself on a woman in a Disney movie these days. Not that I’m asking for it, I’m just saying that it’s crazy how much Disney films have changed. Ahh, I wish I could listen to the Hunchback of Notre Dame soundtrack right now, but y’know...
...it’s probably not safe to swing around Paris on a yoyo, especially from this height.
I should probably go back to do some homework (the perks of still being in school...I’m being sarcastic), but this spectacular view beckons me :’)
As a side note/closing: What’s your favorite Disney movie? Because I’m genuinely curious and I feel like the Hunchback of Notre Dame is slept on and it’s an injustice.

“Marinette, apparently Ladybug has the same favorite Disney movie as you!” Alya said the next afternoon. The best friends had taken their usual seats in their classroom, waiting for the teacher to arrive.
“O-Oh?” Marinette said, mentally slapping herself for stuttering. She made an attempt at appearing indifferent, taking her time to big through her bag for her books, “She likes Mulan?”
(To be fair, Mulan was tied for first place with the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but Marinette didn’t need to elaborate on that.)
Alya cast her best friend a strange glance, “No, she likes the Hunchback of Notre Dame! That’s your favorite Disney movie...”
Ever the bad improviser, Marinette unconvincingly shrugged and dropped her things on her desk, “That’s cool, I guess.”
So convincing, Marinette she scolded herself. Marinette felt that should have seen this coming. Every little detail she’d release on her blog, she’d be forced to listen to everyone gush about it until the end of eternity. And, worst of all, if she wasn’t careful, people would start tallying up the similarities between her and Ladybug.
Movies were one thing--what if she let it slip that she was really a student whose name totally wasn’t Marinette Dupain-Cheng? The logical part of her brain that had yet to short circuit denied the possibilities of this happening, but that still didn’t stop Marinette from scolding herself.
She let out a frustrated huff and dropped her elbows on her desk, rattling the surface and sending one of her pencils over the edge, hitting the floor with a loud clatter.
The noise seemed to attract the attention of Adrien, who at this point, she hadn’t noticed was in the classroom since she was preoccupied with her own internal monologue. She flushed bright pink as Adrien bent down, collected her pencil, and returned it to her desk with a bright smile.
“Ah, thank you very much!” she squeaked.
“It’s no problem, Marinette,” Adrien replied. Instead of turning back to the front, Adrien alarmed her by leaning forward, momentarily catching her off guard with the green of his eyes. He tilted his head and continued to beam at her, “So, did I hear that right? Your favorite movie’s the Hunchback of Notre Dame?”
“Yeah, mmhmm, I sure do love the Hunchback of Notre Dame! It’s great, like you!” she shook her head, “I-I mean, it’s great! It’s a good movie. Yeah!”
“I agree!” Adrien said, “What’s your favorite song from the soundtrack? I’m quite partial to Topsy Turvy.”
Alya scoffed, “Oh, do not get Marinette started on that. She’ll literally fight anyone who says anything other than God Help the Outcasts.”
“Is that true, Marinette?” Adrien asked, suddenly amused.
Marinette’s throat felt dry. She didn’t trust herself to speak, as the last part of her brain had just about short circuited from receiving so much attention from Adrien. She quietly nodded.
Chuckling, Adrien turned back around towards the front, just as the teacher walked in, leaving Marinette to her own thoughts. Ignoring Alya’s smug look, Marinette cracked open a textbook and buried her face in it, where she remained the entire lesson.
