Making horror of more innocent IPs when they hit public domain is annoying but what's more annoying is every studio decides they have to be a generic slasher movie.
The setting and concept of Winnie the pooh lends itself to the fae realm really well. You don't need to have the characters be evil. You can have cute innocent winnie the pooh. The horror is the realm itself and fae law. Christopher robin possibly never getting to leave the hundred acre woods or losing himself.
Him partaking in the innocent picnics not realizing what eating the food means. The residents like Winnie the pooh, piglet, and owl being fae.
Stop with the generic slasher adaptations. At least get creative with this shit.

SCREAMBOAT Slasher based around Mickey Mouse's Steamboat Willie
Screamboat is a forthcoming comedy horror film about a late-night boat ride that turns into a desperate fight for survival in New York City when a mischievous mouse becomes a monstrous reality. Can a motley crew survive a killer creature with a taste for tourists? The movie somehow incorporates footage from the 1928 Disney short Steamboat Willie which was the debut of Mickey and Minnie Mouse and…

MICKEY IS PUBLIC DOMAIN NOW!
Sources [1] [2] [3]
Tumblr media
Image from KALW Public Media, linked [3].
Though Mickey Mouse himself is not yet in the public domain, the version we see from him in Steamboat Willie is. This is, to put it bluntly, HUGE.
Mickey has been in copyright for 95 years- well over the 75 typically granted. With this lift on this particular incarnation of the character, he is now able to be used by fans legally without Disney killing them in court.
If you DO use him, same as with Pooh from last year, you have to specify that you are using THIS version of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse (and also Pete was there too). This Mickey is a lot more of a scoundrel then we think of now, so make sure you're not making him too nice, lol.
But now, if you want to include Mickey in a fan game, a book, your own animated short, a comic, ect, and you wanted to make money off of it, NOW YOU LEGALLY CAN!!
YOU CAN: - Draw him - Sell merch of him - Animate him - Parody him - Build upon him - Write him
YOU CANNOT: - Name a building after him (trademark) - Name a comic after him (trademark) - Pretend to be sponsored by Disney (trademark/ownership) - General infringement on other Mickeys - Delude the trademark (like when people made a slasher movie of Winnie the Pooh, apparently??) [3]
Point is, THIS IS HUGE. Copyright usually only lasts 75 years, and Disney had managed to get an extra 20 years on Steamboat. Now that that's lifted, ANYONE can use Steamboat, it's characters, and it's ideas.
GO NUTS!

Steamboat Willie
Cringe: “Uuuh what if we made Mickey Mouse a horror movie”
Based: “What if we made Mickey Mouse a cute little adventurer on a boat and also anti-capitalist and anti-corporation?”
The mouse is free! Well… the earliest possible iteration of the mouse. I’ve seen a lot of really cute, interesting ideas and art now that Steamboat Willie is public domain. I’ve also seen the horror movies that are in production. I’m not one of those people that’s like “noooo keep Mickey pure!!” But to take the iconic children’s character and make him a generic slasher is so boring. It’s crazy living in a time where this character can now be used by anyone and despite the crappy horror movies that will be made of the character I am still very excited to see the cool things Steamboat Willie will be used for. I hope you enjoy and stay safe. Bye!

I'm gonna sound pretentious af with this but the whole steamboat willie public domain schlock going on rn could've been genuinely interesting if someone wanted to explore the cosmic industrialized horror of modern disney and the monetization of childhood wonder through some sort of psychological horror piece but this is the world where winnie the pooh got a slasher flick announced like a day after getting into the public domain and said slasher flick going on to become one of the worst rated movies in the modern era so I guess I really shouldn't have expected more than a barrage of low-hanging 'what if...Michael Mouse...but...evil??' projects

Hey Guys, let me introduce you to my new OC Lenny the Lemming (Orginal Character Donut Steel)
Welp, it's the year of our lord and savior 2024, the year where that damn despicible rodent Michael Theodore Mouse officially enters the public domain (Only the Steamboat Willie Version but hey, good enough for me.)
As punishment for funding Anti Gay bills and fucking up the American Copyright system, I made the rat a femboy furry.
Hey, like this or hate this, it's better than schlocky Mickey Mouse slasher movie number 2903.
Joking aside, I hope you all enjoyed this I may actually make him into an OC/Seperate Character, like unironically. I love his little Alt Boy Skirt.
Hope you all enjoy!

I've been thinking a lot about that Winnie the Pooh slasher movie that came out last year. Not because I think it's some hidden gem (it's a bad movie) but because I think it really encapsulates what I dislike about people taking Children's media and making it "dark".
It had a grain of a good idea. Christopher Robin grows up and leaves the Hundred Acres Woods behind him. Abandoning the characters that live there, causing them to grow resentful of him. Then one day Christopher Robin returns, now fully grown and has to confront the consequences of his actions.
Only that's not the actual story; Christopher Robin is in maybe 10 minutes of the movie (at the beginning where his wife is killed and he's kidnapped by Winnie, and at the end where he's killed). The majority of the movie is about characters we don't know. The only Winnie the Pooh characters we see are Winnie and Piglet (the other characters died off-screen I guess). Winnie and Piglet aren't even really Winnie and Piglet, they don't speak or act like them, they're just generic slasher villains. They literally could have been anyone.
That's my main issue with stories like these. These iconic characters are stripped of what made them iconic. Their branding is used to generate some cheap buzz, but they're never used to their full potential.
"What if [beloved children's character] was a killer? Wouldn't that be crazy?"
But why though? Why do you need these characters to tell these kinds of story, if you're just going to make them unrecognizable? I feel like I'm already seeing this again with Mickey Mouse now that Steamboat Willie is in the public domain. The characters in your stories should serve some sort of purpose; bad things just happening to them doesn't make for an interesting story, it's just boring!
I'm not against edgy stories, but a story that's all edge is also a story with no point. Don't you want your stories to matter? At least a little bit?

[Shitty trailer for a shitty slasher movie about Mickey Mouse plays]
"that's right! a mickey mouse slasher movie is being made"

"yeah, that's the whole disney brand now. it's all about the WOKE."
"my goodness, now the whole disney brand is fat people on Twooter complaining with a turkey leg in their mouth"
"so I was up in Vermont, right?"

Disney Horror Rewrite Challenge
Been thinking about the Steamboat Willie Retake and how the films are turning all the public domain characters into slashers. I think I’d like to rewrite movies like Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey, Bambi: the Reckoning, and Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare, while trying to maintain the characters’ personalities, incorporate most aspects of the original story in fresh forms, and make sure the story stands out outside of using a popular IP. Let’s see if this solo teenager can make better storylines than a board of authors with diplomas for writing.

Alright, I know there are way more important things to worry about, but I feel like this needs to be brought up.
What. THE FUCK. IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!
Steamboat Willie finally enters the Public Domain and the first thing anyone can think to do is turn it into a HORROR MOVIE?! I mean, the same day it entered Public Domain, there was a trailer! Clearly, you were just waiting for this! Was Winnie the Pooh not enough?! Is turning beloved cartoon characters into stereotypical slasher villains really the only way you can express your creativity with them?!
MAKE THEM TRAVEL THE WORLD! MAKE THEM GO TO SPACE! MAKE THEM GO TO COLLEGE! MAKE THEM ENTER THE REAL WORLD, MEET THEIR CREATORS, AND CELEBRATE THAT THEY ARE FINALLY FREE FROM THEIR CORPORATE MASTERS! I DON'T CARE! THERE ARE LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT WAYS YOU CAN USE THESE CHARACTERS NOW BESIDES TURNING THEM INTO CHEAP KNOCK-OFFS OF FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S!

Wednesday's temperature check (1/3)
I learned a little bit about the US copyright law yesterday.  Back in 1998, thanks to some WWE-level arm twisting by “The Walt Disney Company”, who was afraid the imminent expiration of the Steamboat Willie rights, American singer, songwriter, actor, and politician, Sonny “Salvatore” Bono, championed the Sonny Bono Act (aka Mickey Mouse Protection Act, aka Copyright Term Extension Act).  Thus, the copyrights of intellectual property were extended to 95 years.  A quick math check leads us to acknowledge that anything written in 1928 becomes public domain on January 1, 2024.  Well, Steamboat Willie was written in 1924 (and is now public domain)!  Now, get ready for “Steamboat Willie” horror films.  When Winnie-the-Pooh transitioned to public domain last year, we got “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey”.  It is a movie so bad, it is literally described in the title, “poo”! (3% on Rotten Tomatoes, btw).  So, as an obvious act of defiance to the same company that, in 1989, threatened a lawsuit to force the removal of murals featuring their cartoon figures from the walls of three Florida day care centers, get ready for “Mickey’s Mouse Trap”.  From the trailer, it looks like Steamboat Willie meets the Ghostface from Scream.  Sure, it’s no inside-out William Shatner mask, but partially melting Mickey’s face over an open flame like a S’More is all that’s needed to top 3% on Rotten Tomatoes.   Why do these post-Disney public domain childhood ruining movies have to be slasher films?  How about a war film like, “Mickey-heimer”.  Instead of an atomic bomb, the Americans drop a 355-foot nuclear-powered mouse on Tokyo that wreaks havoc until the Japanese surrender.  Or maybe a rom-com where a street-walking mouse is picked up by a rich, powerful corporate raider from NYC.  Mickey eventually realizes that this plot is the same as two other Disney properties not yet in the public domain and is sued for all the profits.  It’s an incredible lack of imagination on the part of these single-digit thrill seeking movie maker (Editor’s note: maker is doing a lot of work in that sentence).  Anyway, I’m waiting for January 1, 2033 when the rights to “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” expire.  I want to see what kind of horrible mischief is up in that film.  I could imagine a ghost ship named the “Snow White” as it travels from unsuspecting town to unsuspecting town in search of the last of the cursed pirate gold, but running into a former weird, but uncursed captain along the way.  Perhaps we can call it, “Snow White and the Seven Wharves”.
Anyway, stay safe!
Tom

People who say they now expect porn of Steamboat Willie: sure. But porn is usually considered parody? Or treated as such. So it's usually safe.
No, the thing we gotta look out for is an extremely mediocre slasher movie featuring good ol Mick, but I think it's gonna be very hard to say it's Steamboat Willie Mickey when modern Mickey is still firmly owned by Didny.
I do really wanna see what people will do though. I already have my own silly idea for it.

There's an entire scene in Steamboat Willie where Mickey abuses some animals by using them as instruments. That could probably be used for some kind of cat organ horror movie. You don't need to make mickey a slasher.
